Anyone who does'nt see the display of emotion must be blind, deaf &......
She is one of the most emotional performer of our time and she displays it by intrepeting the music to a level of emotion that mesmerizes the listener.

There is something deeply satisfying about Hilary Hahn's playing. Is it the mellow sweetness of that special violin, the wondrous precision of those inner melodies or that scintillating technique? We are so lucky to have these performances available on You Tube.

To anyone criticising Hilary Hahn for lack of emotion, I'd like to quote Vladimir Jurowski: "Don't listen with your eyes".

i think her studio rendition of Paganini’s Violin Concerto no. 1 on Deutsche Grammaphon (2006) has lots of emotion. made me cry the first 7 times I listened to it. perfect pitch, timing and vibrato too!

Why does Hilary have such a luminous quality about her playing? I just kind of stop and be in the moment with her -- it's kind of breathtaking.

Listening to her interviews, she is incredibly well spoken, thoughtful on many subjects, and very confident in her abilities, yet humble at the same time. She has been performing her whole life and continues to keep up a tireless schedule. I am very impressed with her. If my daughter grew up to be so wonderful, I couldn't get any prouder. Brava Hilary!

    • @cmw9876

She has incredible focus. A couple of decades of hard practice , learning & a touch of genius does that to people. The general idea is that we are supposed to listen to the music. Just the same, watching her closely for hundreds of hours instead of just thirty seconds does show a woman with lightning fast reactions and very quick changes of expression. Watch for those fast smiles when she nails a really difficult piece. She also has great situational awareness of the music around her and the conductor. Hahn is one cool cat who probably would also have made an extraordinary sniper. Love her works. I am someone who is rarely moved by many musicians. Hahn's playing leaves me transfixed.

To the conversation about whether a musician should show 'emotion' or whatever there is to show, just really listen to the depth and complexity of her playing, there’s so much going on there, it’s all covered if you want to list the things go ahead but don’t forget she's also searching for the inspirations available to those who are so well prepared as she is. In a way that’s what artists really crave and strive towards, she does that with incredible consistency and success! I’m just bummed I didn’t go to a 'rock' or 'punk rock'gig she sat in on in SF a good 10 years or so back, she invited folks at an Amoeba Records solo performance and 'lecture' to attend after hours and after a classical music concert at Davies Symphony Hall that same day/evening. I had a injury or I’d have been there, gladly I’ve seen her live many times including once with Valentina Lisitsa in a duo performance on my birthday no less!!

If the people complaining about her perceived lack of emotion it's because many in the U.S.have issues with real deep emotion and only can see/accept emotion rendered in gross materialistic facial expressions and physical body movements. There's deep spiritual emotion in her music-making.

When your technique is flawless, it always looks easier than it really is. After all, that's the whole point to achieve physical ease so you can focus on the interpretation.

  • @numsixber

Just because Hilary Hahn does not contort her face or practice histrionics while preforming does not mean that she doesn’t feel the music. Hilary was the last student of Jascha Brodsky who was the last student of Eugene Ysaye . Brodsky thought her not to practice histrionics on or off stage because it detracts from the music.

      @cloudfa1177 8 лет назад +25

He wrote it for Thibaud who couldn't memorize the Bach E major partita, so the interruptions are like him messing up. Usually people play it a little more noticeably like musical swearing but I like her interpretation anyway :) He also adds the day of the dead theme which repeats in the other movements as a sort of joke. Ysaye was just screwing with his colleagues.

Hahn is great as usual. Perhaps it is just the fact that this recording is not very loud, but I find myself missing the intensification on the low notes around 2:10. She keeps hers short but I really like Kaler's interpretation where he really pounds on those notes. His recording is here:

Maybe not, but isn't that also part of the gift we enjoy here. We get to hear her play, as well as be interviewed. We get to know her as an artist, though it's in a selected and controlled manner.
Hilary does have a wonderful presence and she is very beautiful, but first it's her competence and love of the music, then her presence that draw you.
I thought she was only a child, but after listening more and more, I couldn't believe she wasn't only a teenager. To me she is a wonderfully grown up child.
As her fan, her presence is understated. She's competent in any discussion, yet with an almost child like demeanor that make her presence even more endearing. Much like Janine Jansen. It's musical competence and artistic appreciation that are the core of their performances, as though suspended in time and alive in the music.

@ggalexhutchings must have been exciting. what orchestra were you in? also, for anyone out there who thinks HK doesn't emote because she doesn't contort her face or writhe around like Jennifer Koh or Joshua Bell (whom I have seen/heard play live), consider Itzhak Perlman, arguably the greatest living classical violinist: he can't writhe. the passion HK's artistry is heard - just close your eyes and listen.

@artcalight13 If facial expressions equaled emotion, then Leila Josefowicz's recording of the Bruch Violin Concerto would indisputably be the best and most emotional. While I find it very much to my liking, I know some don't.
I think that, perhaps, instead of ridiculous facial expressions, such as Ms. Josefowicz's, Ms. Hahn instead chooses to put her concentration fully into her playing.

I think the thing with her playing isn't that she shows no emotion, because she does, but that one never really gets a sense of difficulty. She plays the most difficult repertoire like a good teacher playing something out of one of the earlier Suzuki books. As well, she doesn't force her own personality through the music. Basically, if she wanted to convey fiendish intensity, she'd likely have to fake it, and that would be something of an abomination. Better to let Hahn be Hahn.
