Nobody could believe their eyes when the head came off this numbers matching 440 and there was a BOLT inside the piston. Nick got down to work and rebuilt the engine, tested it on his dyno, and now it's back in the car and ready to roll. PLUS Nick test drives the Cobra AND tells us all the story of how he first found his passion for cars and engines.

That Coronet R/T holds a special place in my heart. My Father bought a Y2 yellow automatic '68 Coronet R/T in 1972 for $750. That was the first true High Performance car I ever rode in. I was 14. The first ride was from Winneconne, Wisconsin to Milwaukee. When we got on the Interstate coming out of Winneconne he stood on it from about 50mph to 110mph. I had never before ridden in a car that pulled like that! I was a MoPar guy from that moment on to this day. That R/T was only in the family for a few years but oh what an impression it left on me. I now own a 1968 Hemi Super Bee in the same Y2 yellow color. It's my connection to my Father. RIP Dad, I miss you.

    GEORGE!
Good Lord, man, how do you keep upping the ante week after week? Video Dude is becoming like a cinematographer or something! Outstanding work, sir - although I have to admit I'm going to snicker the day you whack something with that camera stick while Nick is driving. :-)
Yep, Nick, I agree - I love the sound of a healthy 18 spline 4 speed as it whines it's way up and down the gears.
I just got my rebuilt one in my own GTX and I just love that sound. It's very uniquely Mopar sounding!
Oh wow, UNCLE TONY!?! I didn't know you knew Tony DeFeo, Nick! He's another of my favorites that goes back decades. That guy has street cred like few others and yes, his YT channel is a riot, too.
VERY cool you two guys know each other!
Next, you'll be telling me you know Rick Ehrenberg.... :-)
Yes, of course we always watch the whole episode. I've never missed one since you started the channel and the Patreon and merch money is the least we can do. I gladly do so as long as you want to keep doing this!

Those break checks are always a little scary for me. I was driving my 1969 Charger going down a hill in the Capitol Hill district in Seattle and came to a complete stop twice. I then made a turn onto a level street and hit the gas. Coming to a red light, I hit the brakes again and . . . nothing. The drum brakes were so heated after the other two stops that they had given up. I hit a lady's Mercedes and damaged my front fender while trying to dodge traffic in the intersection. After that, I converted to 11" front disk brakes using Mopar parts from other years and models going by a parts list I found in a Mopar magazine.

Man I love the Cobra kit car! Ever since watching Bad Boys back in 1995, I always loved those- real or not. Short wheelbase, sidepipes, V8 :)
The Sattelite with plain wheels, and polyglas tires, and EFI is so sweet! In the old days, the Throttle boddy injection was garbage, the new fuel injection is so advanced, it's awesome.
The Charger is sweet , and I think the taillights on the Coronet have to rival the best looking rear end on a muscle car ever.

Nick how do you like driving the Cobra. I was disappointed in them.
I prefer a little more car.
    The Cobra beat me up.
After 45 minutes I was sore.
Not really the office of motor management I had in mind.
    I'd rather have a 4-speed than a 5-speed. Less uncertainty.
I didn't like the muzzle blast during downshifting. There's not much weight to transfer. When a Cobra gets out of hand, it gets way out of hand. Comes down to motor management.

And I was upside down & covered with hot fuel. My left foot was pinned with the steering column up against the firewall and the stick shift was wrapped around my right leg. Thank the Lord I am still here.

I've been in one serious one, 2 kids car seated in the back of a ford escort...not a scratch. Hit a pickup so hard the rear end came out from under it. Had a little one in a mall parking lot when I was a kid...ended up on the dash, thrown from the back seat...8mph, maybe. The numbers don't lie...seatbelts save lives. Do you watch Nascar? Did you watch Dale Earnhardt's last race, where the belt failed? He just barely kissed the wall, and other drivers survive horrific crashes without a scratch.

Nice job on the RT.. I had a 1970 440 coronet with a 318 back when. I couldn't get it to steer right , wandered all over. I went to 3 shops for help but only got the story they all steer like crap. Later in my mechanic life I found out any car that has only the spring bushes and the leaf springs to hold the rear axle in place is going to allow axle movement and hence always you are playing catch with the rear axle moving around. You can really loose it if the axle moves around under big power. The answer to great steering is to put a panhard rod on the rear axle. If you really want fine steering, links fore and aft help under big power. also check the steering box for movement when the car is running.I don't know if you can buy these bits but I know you can make them. I remember the oldsmobile 442 cars with all kinds of rear axle links and rods. They steered so nice. Love your work and appreciate your vids.

So the cobra is a 351 because its not a genuine?
We did a 427 for a kit car at my work. I work at a Reconditioners here in New Zealand. Really like them.

All the cars at Nick's Garage look quick Just another day for Nick A slick oil change for the cab and Nick's got some lovely coffee to grab Mick sent it for Nick If I see it on the shelf then off it i'll pick Coffee and Phyllo pastry it all looks very tasty A very civilised way to start the day. The Cobra's nearly done So it's time to have some fun Power to weight In the Cobra you'll be early and never late Jeff's got a ride to take Al's 440 Satellite Gonna get admiring glances day or night Al knows where to take it To get it running right! Waow a 70 Fury looks super clean in green to me Only the fuel gauge is showing its age Nick will save his customers from rage. Time to retest the Coronet flies like an angry hornet Now it stops like it goes up n down through gear throws After a Brake fix This coronet with a 440 is a heady mix Thanks Nick and crew for sharing your tricks!

@@01trsmar Before I finally found a wrecked charger with a 440 magnum to put it mine, I still used that back seat. You could live in the trunk. One thing I liked that dodge did, they had adjustable front suspension bolts, so you could lift it or lower it. All car manufacturers should have did this. Simple design.

    • @craigpennington1251

I had a 68 Super Bee Scat Pack. Converted it to a 413 solid lifter flat tap with over 600 lift, 4 speed, 3:23:1 posi, some suspension mods, headers with oval straights, and L60X15s all round. No problem burying the speedo needle with plenty to go. That car was built in Canada and weighed 2600 LBS. You guessed it, No power assisted anything and it ran with points dist. and a 60,000 volt hyd. coil.

Nick, you bring more back to life than just engines. These sights and sounds bring back so many memories because it was the golden era of cars. Great job getting a proper guy who knows something about video production. He is able to get us into the cars and the garage with you, and that is what makes all the difference. Thank-you to everyone involved for you commitment to these cars! Can we see you guys drinking coffee please?
