- This video is spoiler-free, only containing footage of the first quarter of the game. Since I feel this game went largely overlooked despite its quality I wanted to talk a little about why I feel it's underrated. Please refrain from spoilers in the comments, any comments containing spoilers will be removed.
Note: This video was originally titled "Underrated Games - Ghost Trick" but I've decided to relabel it as a recommendation instead.

This game is a prime example of narrative done right in games. A proper connection between gameplay and story, even if story is linear and done in visual novel style. The gameplay still follows the rules set by the story and never break these rules, thus keeping suspension of disbelief intact.

Bought the game on the strength of this review some time ago and couldn't believe how good it was. The music, characters and quality of writing are far and away some of the best I've ever witnessed in a video game, all for about $10. It's criminal that a game like this sold so poorly when it had such potential for success if only a bit of a marketing push would've been put behind it.
I played 999, Ghost Trick and Persona 4 within about two months of each other in 2012. All three are among my favourite games of all time and they're all so memorable.

+aneonfoxtribute I played PW1-3, Apollo Justice and both entries in the Investigations series (Ace Attorney Investigations 2 with an english patch), then I played Ghost Trick and after that I played 999. I think I ended up playing Danganronpa after finishing all of the above later.
Even though I was re-playing PW1-3 for a second? third? time, all other entries were completely new experiences for me and holy god damn, Ace Attorney Investigations 2, Ghost Trick, Danganronpa and even 999 in a way have made their way to be some of my most favorite visual murder novel mysteries in a long time.
***** Yep. All three are literally my favorite video game series.
You guys should play Hotel Dusk if you haven't already. More visual novel goodness with a gorgeous art style and just fantastic writing and localization.
Hooooooly crap someone else knows how amazing Ace Attorney Investigations 2 is. I often place it higher than PW:AA: Trials and Tribulations and people have trouble imagining why. It's so good!
And of course I just finished Ghost Trick last night, also as equally brilliant. I'm checking out the Zero Escape and Danganronpa games later.
I support everything this review has to offer. Criminally underrated game in my opinion, one of the best stories ever, it actually moved me to tears. You've absolutely earned a subscriber, your narration is easy to follow and clear.
Now that Ghost Trick is getting rereleased on Nintendo Switch, I'm sending this video to all my friends.
I've been trying to get my friends to play it for years now. Might actually have a chance of convincing them now it'll be on switch

+Markes von Hinten to be fair visual novels aren't really known for their replayability. This game actually seems more replayable than a lot of other visual novels
***** Well not all visual novels have multiple endings. The Phoenix Wright games are prominent visual novels with one ending. For me having multiple endings is just a nice bonus
Does it matter? Movies don't have rewatchability usually, but if the movie is good enough, you will rewatch it in a few years or maybe even sooner. Same goes for a game. Even if a game is completely linear and very story drive, you will probably itch to replay it sooner or later if the experience is really good.
I just finished this game after discovering it through Matthew and, holy shit, it really has one the best stories i ever saw, and realy well told. Gameplay was also fantastic and imaginative, but it does require a slight trial and error
The HD remaster is out for consoles and PC now. Still a wonderful game.

I played this on my iphone, and this is the absolute best iOS game Ive played, and honestly, one of my favorite games of all time, on any platform. Ive played and watched so many lets plays. The story, the characters and the music are all absolutely fantastic and perfect.
And now, Ghost Trick is getting an HD remaster for Switch!
I've always kept this game in the back of my mind thanks to this video and I am finally playing through it right now because of the remaster. It is not my usual type of game at all but I am having a lot of fun. Thank you, Matthew.
I had the twist of Ghost Trick spoiled for me by a random post on 4chan in a completely unrelated thread. At the time I thought nothing of it, but when I got around to playing it I remembered almost immediately. Fug.
I Live in argentina and when i wanted to play the game i couldn't find it, so i had to pirate it.. I loved it so much (my best DS game ever) that i had to get a copy... luckily i found a mint sealed copy that i keep like gold with myself. This game is one of the best games ever, should be on every top then list of all timers.
Picked this game up again a few days ago after a year since the remaster announcement got me in the mood again.
After beating the game just a few hours ago, I have to say it's an experience I'll never forget. You owe it to yourself to play this if you haven't, it's such a unique game for it's short runtime with great characters and a perfect conclusion to the story.

This game is incredible (both the inventive game mechanics and the truly incredible and highly memorable story) but no one I knew played it. I thought I was going to have to teach myself to make RUclips videos just to sing its praises, but thankfully you've saved me a job. Bravo, sir.
I freaking loved Ghost Trick. The narrative is superb, and considering it was done by the Ace Attorney team, that comes as little surprise.

And it's getting an HD remaster for the switch now that comes out this summer (2023). I'm so excited to finally get to play it, after having watched this video multiple times for years.
For anyone watching this in the spring of 2023, this game is getting a remastered release, so go pre-order it.

I had heard only some really positive whispers about Ghost Trick around the time it came out. It was kinda hard to find, so I first pirated it and emulated it to make sure I liked it. I did indeed like it. So, I tracked down a physical copy.
Piracy doesn't have to be hurting the industry, it can be used responsibly. But not everyone can stick to this honor system, unfortunately.
+voidmaster45 I ALWAYS pirate games first to make sure I can run them properly on my kinda old pc and that I actually enjoy them before buying... As an Argentinian.. a videogame is a big chunk out of my monthly salary unfortunatelly....
I bought a copy of Ghost Trick when I was younger, but I agree with what you have to say about piracy. In the end, the DS will become an obsolete system and piracy will be the only thing that keeps Ghost Trick alive.
Actually, it's also available for IOS now, so that is what's probably gonna keep it alive.
Sadly, the newest iOS update is going to strip out 32-bit applications. That means that starting from the next update, Ghost Trick won't be usable on iOS until (if) Capcom releases an update.
i mean buying a second hand copy is really missing the point imo, it doesnt net a sale for the publisher, and the devs dont get any money from it, if they would be getting any at all. i'm not saying it's pointless, having an original physical copy is nice, but the point against piracy is to support the production of games like this in the future, so a second hand copy really doesn't accomplish much in that regard.

I remember I was bored one day, so I booted up the Wii and went on the "Nintendo news channel" or what-ever it was called. There was a bunch of game-trailers so I watched a couple of them, and that's when I saw the trailer for this game. The visuals and the music were what initially caught my eye (and ear), and I played the demo over and over. I absolutely fell in love with the game, so I ordered it so it'd arrive on the release-day, and I played through it in 2 days, and albeit it was a bit short, it was no longer than it had to be (which made it even more memorable). I agree with every little bit of this video, the game is truly one of the most perfect games I've ever played. The story (and the plot twists!) were always interesting. I can't type much more than this, but if anyone is considering getting the game (legitimately) then I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

After watching the first minute or so of your video I bought this game. I started it at around 1:30 last night, had a sleep, woke up and played the rest of it. I just couldn't stop playing this game. It is truly a masterpiece, I just wish there was more of it lol. I can't praise it enough or thank you enough for introducing it to me. Cheers

Lol that happened to me. I actually knew about Ghost Trick since its launch but just never bothered. I saw this video last week and decided after watching a minute "Let me see how much it is." It was $12 new from Amazon Prime so I did it. Just completed it a few minutes ago. Great game, with a realyl good premise.
I agree though that it seemed that there wasn't a "big stumping puzzle" but there were two points I got truly stuck for a while and had to redo the part over and over again. So I can't really ask for anything more without it just being "wanting more" because it was just so good.
I know this comment is 6 years old but I also recently played Ghost trick because of this review and it's now my 4th favourite game of all time I just wish more people played

+Shintai You should really. Really unique and nice game. The game also just look beautiful. Animations are good. Story revelation is the highlight in my opinion. The game has this charm in it. Ending was totally unexpected but also satisfied me really.

It's great to have a video about this game, it really deserves all the exposure it can get. Everyone who enjoys a good story with mysteries should play this ASAP. Just a hint to those who haven't played it, try not to search for any information about it (other than maybe watch this video). This game can be very easily spoiled, even searching for fan art of this game will most likely spoil the ending for you.

GT's great plot twist is foreshadowed PERFECTLY. It's saddening how many found it "Shaymalanesque", because it's really picture perfect. It only requires trust towards the writer, because that glaring contradiction MAY be on purpose to let the player figure out that there is something fishy behind, but it also may be just an oversight or plothole by the writer. That's why I recommend to play the first three AA before GT. The former show multiple times how good Takumi is at storytelling, so when you play GT you know when you see a clue, a contradiction, a piece that doesn't fit, it's because of the first case.

Finished ghost trick today so i could come back to watch this reveiw. By far one of the best games I've ever played. The narrative in this game is absolutely incredible.
Same guys that create Phoenix Wright? No wonder I loved this game.
I have a confession though... I'm one of those people that pirated the game. A couple years ago someone got me something that would allow me to download and play DS games. Simple. So I searched the internet, "What are good DS games?" By the time I had gotten this gift, the 3DS was in and the DS was dying out. On every list I found, Phoenix Wright showed up (and that's how I got introduced to the series) and on one list I saw Ghost Trick. Long story short, the only reason I found this game was because of piracy. I'm not promoting piracy! I did buy the game on Ebay later on (so I guess my "vote" still doesn't count...) as well as Phoenix Wright, but I think it's sad that it's because of piracy that I ever heard of these games in the first place. I probably would have never played/heard of them otherwise.
Along with W101, that is now TWO of my five or six favorite games ever that you've recommended me. Thanks man, seriously.

I’d have voted with my money if I’d known about the game 9 years ago, that’s for sure. Holy hell this game is a true masterpiece of a game, and the best piece of evidence supporting the idea of Video Games as Literature that I personally can think of.
Finally played it, and I'm so glad I did. You're right, seriously underrated game, left it feeling the same way I do after having read a great book.

Yeah, I played this game several years ago and only found it because it was actually in my campus library. I absolutely loved it and I'm glad you've gotten the word out at least a little about this great game.

Capcom seems to have a general problem with marketing it seems. I mean, why Okami didn't get the same level of love and attention the development team put into it is beyond me, while DmC: FUCK YOU got marketed way harder than any of the other Devil May Cry games, only for word of mouth and fan backlash to nip it at the bud because it was the inverse problem (too much marketing, not enough love).

This game really is a magnificent gem. Anyone who hasn't played it is missing out. It's brilliantly constructed, the story is clever and engaging, the visual style is lovely, and the gameplay, story, and visuals all compliment each other perfectly.
I haven't played it since it first came out, and I only played it once, so I missed the foreshadowing. You've convinced me to replay it.
I got this game on my iPad to burn some time on a flight and was shocked at how good it was. It's probably one of my favorite stories from games :D

Lol I love how offended you are that Ghost Trick isn't widely known. I bought it based on its name and honestly at first thought it was a platformer type game. It definitely brought to mind AA-PW while playing but a lot less frustrating. This games was surprisingly fun and it blew all my expectations. Still okaying so looking forward to the end game.

Picked up the game on your recommendation. Took me long to get into but I wasn't disappointed. The game felt like a big climb through all the mysteries and lack of information on what the hell is going on but the ending is worth it.
I liked how detailed the game is and how you can deduce a lot of stuff on your own if you're paying attention. Thanks.
The one issue I had with Ghost Trick is that when repeating puzzles, you can't skip the little cutscenes like Kamila pushing the donut cart around. I thought of a different solution than the game wanted when playing that puzzle, meaning I had to watch that cart be pushed around somewhere around ten times while trying to get it to work. While I admit that it would take away from the immersion (and, as a fan of Majora's Mask, I should be used to doing the same thing over and over again), the fact that it takes place in such a small timespan and took away from my ability to control Sissel simply left me without much want to play it. The story's fantastic, sure, but I couldn't enjoy the game without resorting to a walkthrough.

one of my favorite games. Gameplay is innovative , the story is awesome, and they are connected so intensely.
This is so one of my favorite games, I love all of the characters, designs, music, story, humor and the gameplay was always fun and challenging. To be honest I'm not the best gamer around so it was pretty hard for me at points, even if I knew what I was supposed to be doing. Then again I did play it when I was around 10 and about the only games I had played up to that were Pokemon, Cooking Mama, Smash Bros., Ace Attorney and a few others here and there so this was a very different kind of game for me which I'm grateful for. I feel like it really opened up a lot to me and I would play it over and over.
It's really very sad it didn't get as much love as it deserved, they should've at the very least market it towards Ace Attorney fans since if they like that chances are they'll like this. I really hope that more people in the future learn of this game and let Capcom know

Been following Matthew for years now and don't know how I missed this video. Bought Ghost Trick off Amazon a week ago and just got around to finishing it. I think I can say this is easily the most engaging story I've ever had the good fortune of experiencing while playing a video game.
My only complaint has to do with a specific character that seemed very important to one of the other characters mysteriously never making an appearance, and if anyone has any insight into that cryptic statement I would love some closure.

I wish I could buy the game for the DS back when it was on sale. Ended up getting it via my own means and immediately fell in love. After finishing, I bought the full game on the mobile, but I still feel that I haven’t paid enough for what I got here. I’ll definitely be buying any port/remaster if that miracle ever come to be to make up for missing out the first time.

It also helps to see that you've played many games that I also love like Ghost Trick. I never cared much for Phoenix Wright, but Ghost Trick was one of the best games I've played in recent memory.
I had never heard of this game until I watched the video but I picked it up thanks to it, and now it is one of my favorite games of all time. This game was such a good buy. I used $9 to get all the chapters on my phone. I got Ghost Trick from the App Store on its birthday cause I heard that there was free stuff in the App Store from the radio, so I looked in free games and found this gem. This was one of the best games I've ever played!
I never owned a DS nor do I have a 3DS as of yet, however I heard about this game back in the day and loved the concept. I was so excited when they released it on IOS and bought it for iPad right away - to anybody wanting to play it who don't have a DS/3DS but have an IOS device, get it for that. On iPad the larger screen size meant that the game's smaller resolution does give the sprites some jaggies as a result of the image being blown up, but it still looks fantastic regardless. I know what I'm replaying tonight!

Dude, even though you have quite less views your reviews and analysis are so damn good and one of the best, problably the best, I've ever seen. (Even though you are a bit fast sometimes for people not having english as their mother tongue) You definitely deserve more views, way more views, more people should see this.

I just so happened to come across this game when it was on sale for iOS for a measly 99 cents.
Undoubtedly the best buck I've ever spent.
I just love having this game get the recognition is deserves. I'm not sure what I can say about it besides what has been said in this video but I'll try. This game could possibly be one of the best experiences I've had. The music, the characters (Missile especially), the story (Best story of any game I've seen).It's just so hard to talk about it without gushing so I'll just say this: Play it for the incredible feelings that come from this game and the great things about it, you won't regret it.
This video just reminded me of how amazing this game's soundtrack was.
Ghost tricks biggest issue was it’s timing. It came out months before the 3ds. Even the best marketing division would fail miserably to make that stand out compared to a new hand held coming out that’s a follow up to the massive success of the ds.
