Dear Bo, i just wanted to thank you for being such an inspiration. It is thanks to your videos i've gotten myself a Digitakt and started experimenting with electronic music after many years of being a listener. Huge support from Warsaw and as always, stay awesome. :-)
Glorious way of doing things, right? We get the official announcement from Moog, ability to preorder, and tons of incredible review videos all at the same time!
I've watched 12 Subharmonicon videos so far in the last 24 hours. Thanks for the vid Bo, but a bit much there eh Moog? Covid stuck-at-home technique maybe? As sexy as the third member of the semi-mod 60HP Moog fam is, I've yet to hear it rip and rumble...yet. Maybe I'm expecting too much in err umm...24 hours... haha.
IMO an important thing to consider with semi-modular synths is "would I wanna buy individual parts of this synth as standalone modules to add to a full rack". I want to buy the sequencer and oscillators from this as standalone modules. This is a good semi-modular synth
thanks Bo for another great video - definitely inspiring stuff... and an instrument should be PLAYED - I've always found inspiration in the machines I play - each part of this synth can and should be played - not just controlled but played. It's the human interaction with the instrument that brings to life the machine, the electricity, the performer and the listener!
Most musical and practical of all of the SubH reviews... nice! Some reviewers seemed really perplexed by this machine. Seems like the Keystep Pro came out at the right time.
I think that it wants to be one happy family with his mummy and his brother. If you hook it up to a keystep, it`s gonna be sad and dissapointed in you :)
Tonally this sounds extremely close to the Volca Keys. Really very interesting sequencing possibilities... Excellent introduction. There were 3 examples you generated that sound like they want and would deserve full song structure. Nice.
Great review (as always) - what a cool instrument! I didn't get how the "rhythm" knobs 1,2, etc. function. It sounded like they are tempo dividers/multipliers for the sequencers?
Hey, Nice review (subbed). Quick question; would you recommend this thing as a 'first synth' for someone to get into (semi-)modular (albeit a bit pricey)? I've been playing around with software (particularly REAKTOR) to produce some more electronic stuff and make some of my own patches, but I kind of miss the 'jamming' capability in the software (just turning the knobs). I used to be a professional session bassplayer, so the polyrythms and subharmonics seem super interesting to try some stuff with. It seems very unique and right up my alley. It seems pretty versatile as well.
I’m in the market for my first analogue synth. Everyone says start with the mother but I kind of want to start with this! I feel like this is more immediately usable and inspiring. One question. Would I be able to use my OG Novation circuit as a drum machine paired to the subharmonicon?
Yeah, so Sub 37 and Sub 25 have a similar tone for sure. Grandmother perhaps? Not same at all in terms of functionality but you get this sort of beefy tone. Without the additional sub osc ofc.
Hey Bo, I've sadly sold my Moog Sub37 today and thinking to complete my DFAM and Mother set up with this. Have you experienced playing with all 3? My guess is that this will give me that inspiration that I feel I couldn't get in a set up with a sub37 and a Mother32. Keen to hear your thoughts. I also had an eye on the Novation Peak for a v long time and doing a weigh up. I have a Minilogue XD, Hydra, Digitone so not sure whether I go towards a Peak or go for Subharmonicon. I think the uniqueness is important but I do love how the Peak sounds :S BIG thanks!
My only complaint with the Subharmonicon, which i probably will still get it, is that it doesn't have separate output paths or stereo paths. Imagine how cool it would be if you could hardpan the oscillators into the left-right, or get a spread going where they have even stereo distribution? Major problem with Moog. It's absurd that the Subsequent 37 for example doesn't have stereo outs. I know you can get around it, but it shouldn't increase the cost too much to include a stereo path
Couldnt you just take osc 1 and two out via patchbay and pan them? Ofc you’d have to process them individually but with eurorack you could do it fairly easily.
@@BoBeats I actually don't have any other eurorack, I have an Analog Four MKII and Hydrasynth though which allow me to send CV though. Was considering this as the first semi-modular in my setup. I tend to shy away from Eurorack because I prefer having presets and a more standard synth mod matrix, but this Moog is too cool to pass up. I had a Mother-32 for a little while and I loved the sound but just found it too basic with only 1 oscillator. So this is great because it sounds similar to the Mother, but is much more interesting and I want to include polyrhythmic elements in my music
Beautiful sounds. Well done Bo. Lovely machine. 1000 USD in Australia so thats not happening for me. If they ever sort their pricing out looks like a lot of fun to be had.
Still a bit of a noob so apologies if this is a dumb question, but at 18:33, is that chord on the Keystep overriding the pots on the Subharmonicon? I’m assuming that each note played is assigned to the sequencer in the order it’s played?
Definitely liked this review and your honest thoughts. That sequencer is pretty interesting and seems quite versatile. I was considering the Make Noise 0-CTRL ($400) for its analog sequencing option allowing you to affect pitch, strength and time (on note) AND ability to play patterns in reverse. Although the Moog doesn’t have that feature, it does appear I can pair the 0-CTRL with it at a later time if it’s that important…unless there’s a workaround/feature undiscovered on the Subharminicon that allows you to do it. For now, I can handle the four (?) step sequencing because of the two sequencers it has which is pretty cool. I’m new to this but I just placed my order for the Subharmonicon. Cheers to success and to your continued following. Your videos are usually high quality and the effort you put into creating them shows through. Did you have a review of the 0-CTRL already? Have you considered a review teaming it with the Subharmonicon? That would be a video worth learning from! Stay safe and take care!
Thank you! No video on the 0-coast. I wish I had one. Also a fun tip for the subharmonicon: if you have a sequencer with CV out you can put CV to pitch input to transpose the entire sequence! That can be useful to create longer sequences
@@BoBeats Thank you for responding so quickly! Can I fold the CV out back into to the pitch do that or….can I affect that same length (or longer) sequence by using say a Moog DFAM? While I think the $400 for the 0-CTRL is a bit pricey for me, are there other free standing analog sequencers you could recommend that can accomplish this? I am learning more about the CV world and it seems pretty powerful! Would a Keystep allow you to create 32, 64, or longer sequences using the CV? I literally just finished watching their video for the lowest priced version and it seems like it can do a lot. I love keyboards, but I’m ok having a good controller that has MIDI, pitch, and CV outs! I can do synth desktop modules all day and just use a MIDI breakout box and call it a day! In fact, I’m selling my OB-6 keyboard and so I can replace it with the desktop module one day. A strong controller can go far and NOT become obsolete so quickly as a MIDI ONLY controller can in MY usage. You’ve got a lot of knowledge so thank you for sharing whatever you can!
Very nice in the last third or so. The polyrythms, couldn't similar results be achieved with say a Keystep and an sq-1? The 6 oscillators and subharmonics are pretty cool.

Nice video Bo, nice synth. You could of course use your dbx 286s channel strip and compress that resonance volume dip. Just a shame that all the synthfluencers post their opinions on the Subharmonicon the day that Behringer announce their MonoPoly clone, which is what has really got me excited.
Good review Bo, thanks for that. Do you think it would work well toghether with the Subsequent 37CV? (i already own that one). I would like some more Moog sound sources playing at the same time in my tracks.

It's not REALLY a 4-step sequencer though it's 2 that can be clock divided poly-rhytmically which makes the permutations much more complex if you take advantage of that. Also uh, if you have Elektron devices you have NO limitation with sequencer stuff you can just MIDI control it.
I’ve been watching all the Subharmonicon porn I can find before pulling the trigger- and this is in.the top three tutorial/demos. I shall be returning to this for hints and tips...
I think so... I got mine, and also a DFAM. If you have a RUclips channel and didn't get one, reach out to them. They're a very nice company to work with.
Hi Bo, some folks say it’s hard to put Subharmonicon into a song and quite disappointed about it, but I think it’s a rhythm generator power house for electronic music like techno. What do you think for producing wise with this new beast?
Hi Bo, thanks for another great vid. Do you have any tips about how to sync a SubH to a DAW? I am using a USB-2-Midi-Cable from Ableton to SubH. But the sequencer is absolutely unreliable and becomes out of sync. I adjust the latency parameters in Ableton and all is good for a while. But with the next start / stop in the DAW, the thing is hell out of sync again. Makes me mad :-) Thank you!
It's beautiful. The part that bothers me about making music with polyrhythms is how do you control it? I have the NI Kontakt Moon Kit drum kit and it has a polyrhythm program built in. It sounds great, but I can't figure out how to make use of it with other instruments. If I can edit the piano roll and put in my polyrhythms I can at least see something that makes sense & that I can control. But having trouble with it for hardware or software that will "do it for you" because then they've taken out your ability to change it, or maybe I'm hallucinating the problem. I love the weird machines and effects so this Subharmonicon is definitely up my alley...albeit it certainly is steeply priced...it must be my arch-enemy, inflation, creeping in.
shitmandood it’s easiest to work with polyrhythms live rather than working with them in a DAW, also helps if everything else is running in a 4 to the floor rhythm. That way the polyrhythm is adding surprise/interest/spice rather than getting in the way of establishing a clear rhythm. In some respects that lack of controlability is kind of the point I think - it encourages you to embrace snap decisions and surprise (also why they’re better for live jamming than for working in a DAW
what exactly are you supposed to do with it? I can't see any form of real music in there. I mean MUSIC, not sound design with harmonic sequences. No matter what I imagine, it wouldn't fit anywhere. So it's $800 just for solo fun cryptic detuning sounds.
Wow, great demo! 👏🎶Tycho is my favorite band/musician, and your sound is right there in that genre. I'm not a musician but am interested in dabbling a bit, I saw one of these for sale in my area and was curious about it (Moog is hot stuff). I'll likely stick to laptop things, but this gives me more of an idea of what all those little buttons and knobs do. Synth Voodoo Magic. 😁

In some respects that lack of controlability is kind of the point I think - it encourages you to embrace snap decisions and surprise (also why they’re better for live jamming than for working in a DAW
do you need a specific type of midi keyboard in order to play it?
what exactly are you supposed to do with it? I can't see any form of real music in there. I mean MUSIC, not sound design with harmonic sequences. No matter what I imagine, it wouldn't fit anywhere. So it's $800 just for solo fun cryptic detuning sounds.
Exactly. It's just not musical, not particularly good for sampling either.
bleeps and bloops. isn´t that enough?
What’s the bassline synth next to it
Sounds cool but cant see myself making music with it.
Seems very musical.
The ad before the video was telling me to read the bible, as if I wasn't already watching BoBeats...

where you getting the kicks from?
Economy tanked at the wrong time...maybe get one next year. Hope synth manufacturers can survive, not looking good.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought I need those BMW knobs
Nice ;-)
I might need 2 to go with my 2 DFams

This synth is a must have for me. Subharmonics AND polyrhythms in one synth? My eurorack is gonna go crazy with this. Bye bye Neutron...
quantized drum-machine coitus interruptus
And at $399 it’s a real steal!
Try $700
I just figured it out grab your tin foil hat you cut your hair and then they shut everything down to force you to grow back the locks. LoL
How did you know?!?!
