Great review. I have the Trail Blaze Carbon Skyrunner poles and they are superbly light. I have them in my quiver and attached to my Salomon pack for every run and you wouldn't know they were there. I agree though that the handle grip is a bit abrasive after a couple of hours. Good idea about the t-shirt material.
Thanks for the review, plus 1 vote for the cheaper Mtn Kings. Just to add the main benefit of the longer grips on some poles (in addition to aiding grip with 2 hands for river crossings) is for sliding your hand down abit on the uphill pole when traversing steep ground, effectively makes 1 pole shorter than the other.
I've always used the Black Diamond Carbon Z poles, and found them to be great to use. The poles from Harrier look good too, I have other kit from them which has so far proved to be good quality and great value 👍
Another use of the long grip is if traversing on a mountain one pole may need to be gripped lower than the other to account for the higher terrain on one side. I have similar features on my Ski touring poles.
Nice review Claire. I love my LEKI poles I have the micro trail pros and they are amazing although at their price I was crushed when I shattered one in a really rough race...
Also if you slide the velcro strap down the pole a bit you can strap the string down at its end so it doesn’t swing about! With the strap a bit further down it holds the folded pole together nicely too!
I have the aluminium Mountain King Trail Blaze, they are 138g ... so a little bit heavier... but half the price (i got them for £59) and still a lot lighter than most carbon poles!
Wild Ginger Running I guess the minimal design just wins the weight prize whatever they are made from... its so cool how they replaced the complicated locking mechanisms of nearly every other pole with a knot in the string 😁
Great reviews Claire, been waiting for this! I think i'll take a look at the Harriers. For someone that hasn't used poles i think they are a decent price and look well made!
Thanks for the review, you touched upon many important points! However, I'm confused as to why you would, in a video entitled "top 5 review", include a set of poles that you feel you cannot recommend: Surely, there are enough poles out there to compete for the top 5. It's also worth pointing out that another benefit of the long handles (on, say, the Leki and BD poles) is that you can easily move your hand from the upper to the lower position, which comes in handy in quickly variable terrain (lower position for ascending, upper position for descending).
Just picked up the UD Ultra poles and can confirm the set up is odd (having to guess where the lockout pin is, not being able to figure out exactly how the tensioner should be set) and seems like there are multiple wear points of concern (the flimsy elastic cord that holds the whole thing together, and the metal lockout button being pressured awkwardly against the carbon fiber hole), so we will see. The catch, and reason I went with them, is I got them for $68 including tax from REI. Can’t really beat that, but would be feeling sketched if I paid full retail.
Your elbow should be at 90 degrees when they're on the ground and you're holding them comfortably to each side, see this film here for how to get the correct size poles ruclips.net/video/kA3cr7ETKok/видео.html and also this one, it's for hiking but same drill ruclips.net/video/ewmN23N0Mm8/видео.html Hope that helps! So glad I purchased the Harrier poles. Still not had chance to properly take them out yet though. Great video again thanks.

Cool! Harrier stuff is great, that's fab news
You should add some sound dampening where you filmed this Its echoing. Or use a better mic closer to you :) Great video though

Nice tip! Thanks RR!

@@wildgingerruns It was running in that gale over in Ireland up a tough section - caught something and went over fell with it under me and it snapped.
Thank you for creating worthwhile content.
Why thank you Travis

Currently using the MSR Dynalock Ascent Carbon, want to give the Black Diamond Carbon Z a try though.👍😎🤘
Thinking about investing in a pair of poles, first stop for gear review = Wild Ginger Running, really useful thanks! :)
Glad it was helpful! Claire
Brilliant review Claire , I like the top 5 , I am having them all .

I’ve got the Helvellyn poles, I’m new to using poles but really happy with mine!
Thanks for the tips!
Happy to help!

Yes totally agreed Danny! Thanks for sharing :) Claire
Are these different from Nordic walking poles?
yes, mostly regarding weight .
Leki micro RCM are the best if you ask me. super comfortable, super simple. (bit pricey but you will only need to buy the one pair)
My black diamond distance z is 120cm my height is 5'10. It is compatible to my height?

120g each I'm sure is 240g per pair not 220 just saying
