I'm in New Jersey and have several fruit trees and grape vines. last year it was a nightmare with these pests. I've tried everything from neem oil to spraying them directly with soapy/oil water to expensive mycoinsecticie which is a fungus that kills most soft bodied insects. None worked. Neem is not very effective as you have to constantly reaply on new growths and it really needs a thick barrier of it which gets expensive if you truly want to make it work. Spectracide Triazicide did it for me. It can be used on fruit trees and vegetables and it comes in a hose attachment so you can literally pressure wash your garden with it. No pump needed with little mist coverage. You can get underneath and drench everythying with it. not even 10 minutes later after the first application the nymph including red nymphs started falling like rain. I got about 80% of them down with first application. The next day with the second application i got about 95% of them. Now I wait for them to round up in an uncoated spot and just blast them with this stuff. You have no idea how much relief i get from murdering these little bastards. They nearly destroyed my damn backyard. Spectracide Triazicide folks. You're welcome
Hey you should a video about it to help out us amateurs. I’m in Delaware and I just started seeing them last year and starting to see more this year. I’m trying to get it under control for it gets out of hand.
Neem oil does work. You just won't see them die. Spray them and they will hop away and be unable to consume food and will die. It's even better to spray them as nymphs, it's just more of a challenge cause the move faster in that stage.
Neem oil works Adding a tobacco tea helps also Spraying fruit trees and vines with spectravide is asking for cancer. The Neem oil must be applied regularly and the bugs will lose their ability to hop and then die . It doesn't happen over night
Thanks for the education on this pest. They have infested my rose bush. I have been doing some research on them and your tip seems the most doable for my garden.
@Mary Thompson Saw them for the first time last year, yet this year they are on my rose bushes and other vine plants. I am afraid to use chemicals because of other insects I do not want to kill. Like our bees, butterflies, etc?
Yes you may have to make it little stronger. Please shake the concentration and diluted mix well. Also these guys do not die on contact with Neem oil right away. They kinda run away & their numbers keep decreasing over time.
Mix 1 qt of turpentine (paint thinner) to 3 qts water and add about 1 cup of dish liquid. Shake well and spray the nymphs and adults using a pump sprayer. I get about 5,000 kills per gallon of mixture and it cost about $3.
I used that and they jumped off the rose bush. Were back the next day lined up like soldiers, sucking my rose bush cane. I had a lot in my front garden. I zapped them with garden spray. I hate using but there were about 50 of them. Cut down on how many I saw after that.
If tree of heaven is removed they attack the grape plants, once grape plants are not available they attack cucumber plants and so on. With no local predators this is a very difficult to control insect.
Glad you were able to save your grapevine & grapes! Good to know Neem oil works on them as well. I normally don't use neem oil because of the precious bees. If an infestation becomes bad enough such as the one you had, I might have to resort to using it though. -Thanks
I don't think neem works because you have to spray them directly. I tried sparying them with insecticidal soap and that works but you also have to spray directly.
I agree, when using 100% neem oil a soap is needed to emulsify the oil. The product that I used contains only 70% extract of Neem Oil, I assume part of the other "30% ingredients" included some soap. I just followed the directions provided on the product.
Yes, a few teaspoons of insecticidal soap (or dish soap, organic if possible) should be mixed with a few 4-8 teaspoons of neem oil per gallon. Haven't tried this yet but my backyard is infested with adults right now! I'm hoping this works!
The Neem oil you are using is weak 70% I recommend cold pressed , 100% neem oil which has higher azadirachtin content which is the active ingredient against insects. During heavy infestation, spray weekly.
100% neem is best with some dish soap, too. Also spray in early morning or early evening to prevent scorching. Neem oil is also great for rose bushes and azaleas. It does require weekly or biweekly use, though. My grandma in Japan used this but I never knew the name. I’m the only gardener in the fam so no one could tell me the name and she passed when I was nine. When I started looking around for for natural pesticides, I came across and it’s distinctive smell let me know I found the good stuff - lol. No worries, though. The smell does not linger in the garden.
Neem oil always burns my plants and doesn’t kill the bugs intended. I have tried everything against these moths but the best method is swatting and squishing, lol

Spetracide Triazicide will not hurt the plants/flowers?

You are using chemicals on a fruit tree of which you eat the fruit, not for me cancer a possibility
Neem oil works
Adding a tobacco tea helps also

It’s crazy how stink bugs have magically disappeared and now we got these
We have both stink bugs and lantern flies here in Maryland 😫😫😫 they are so gross
@@shake_shells11 crazy as this comment came up I seen two of them phuckers today I’m in Pittsburgh
. Same body shape
@@shake_shells11 SWEAR THEY ARE! I’ve been very grateful here in Pittsburgh to not seen any YET but the news reported they’re coming
I live in the starting location. The SLF for some reason not really doing well. Which is great fella and thanks for the tip too.

Thank you! In S Central PA, they are on my red raspberry bush.
York area is getting hit hard. I noticed more last year but this year they are everywhere☺️
Beautiful grapes! I hate these things they are so destructive and it seems like they quadruple every year. Going to try neem oil
Thanks for sharing. I’m trying this this weekend!
Does Neem oil damage leaves? I have similar grape vine over a pergola. This is 1st year we have seem them. S.I. NY
I did not see any damage to the leaves. Last year we did not get any grapes. This year we have grapes in the vines.
Good idea, but invest in a pump sprayer. It will be easier on your hands, and you can reach further with more pressure.
I tried Neem oil and they just laughed at me. Maybe I need to change my ratio
Yes you may have to make it little stronger. Please shake the concentration and diluted mix well. Also these guys do not die on contact with Neem oil right away. They kinda run away & their numbers keep decreasing over time.
Neem oil doesn't and won't work...soap and vinegar doesn't work. It causes them to migrate to different host plants.
“I’ll never lie to you…sometimes” 😂

Thanks for this, I saw another gardener from Jersey mention this too. OBTW, I loooove your YT channel name. Great video.
Thank you !!
Maybe solution is netting the area especially for farms
so they are related to cicacdas? but they dont grow up in the ground?
They are not related to cicadas

Is removing tree of heaven from your area help with control?
If tree of heaven is removed they attack the grape plants, once grape plants are not available they attack cucumber plants and so on. With no local predators this is a very difficult to control insect.
I used peppermint water
It got soo bad in my back yard I said screw it and used brake cleaner not good to use but VERYY affective instant killer

I too was hesitant to use neem oil due to its issues with bees. I use this only as last resort & it has been very effective.
Neem oil doesn't and won't work.
Unless you down them, neem oil WILL just cause the lanternflies to migrate to another host plant.
Mix with dish soap and perethrin oil which kills on contact. Making it a two part kill
I would never use anything that would hurt the bees.
Is it pet friendly and kids friendly?
Per the DEC, it is pet friendly, unfortunately it is not safe for humans. 😫
I don't think neem works because you have to spray them directly. I tried sparying them with insecticidal soap and that works but you also have to spray directly.
Another solution that works well is one tbsp of each, cooking oil and dish soap. Add to a spray bottle like the one in the video. Go get them!
Don't we need to mix any soap to emulsify neem oil?

Find a tree of heaven take bioadvanced 3 in 1 and mix 2 tbl spoons into a spray bottle and spray the bugs, sevin works well also.
Good results on nymphs in MD by homeowner. Wear mask to preventing inhalation. This is not good for your lungs.
Thanks for the information I've seen babies here on the butterfly bushes they don't like fire either I hit him with a torch
You're killing other bugs too with this poison. Stop it
did you see those grapes at 5:12, this person is producing grapes. Would you rather no grapes in stores ? You don't think he should protect it ?
Neem oil doesn't work
