Amanda, greetings from Southern NJ where we have been invaded by the SLF's. I just began experimenting with wrapping duct tape around the trunk of my huge maple tree. Funny thing is the SLF nymphs don't seem to like the tape and avoid it. It must have a scent that repels them; however, I still do get some stuck to it. Just got some fly paper from Tractor Supply which I hop to try out. The bark on my maple trees is deeply furrowed; therefore, I use pieces of polyester fiberfill to fill the gaps between the back of the tape and tree bark. I started off making a chicken wire guard but realize that I might end up with beneficial insects trapped so I will be making the fiberglass screen guard as you demonstrate in this video. Thank you for doing what you do. Keep fighting the good fight.

Thanks for making the switch to fiberglass. It is so much more effective at preventing insects from getting stuck too!

Thanks Amanda, great video. I wonder if this will interfere with squirrels, but I imagine they're pretty innovative in getting around obstacles. I use fly paper I found on amazon, and it works great! The larger/redder ones do seem to be able to avoid getting stuck, so I'll try this screen skirt method you described.

Hi Amanda, Trying your technique, however using tacks can be quite dangerous in a horse pasture where horses graze. I used thin wire and weaved in & out of the screen about an inch from the top so it doesn't fray. It gathers quite nicely. Cut the wire about 3 inches longer than the screen. Wrap the screen around the tree and twist the wire tightly.

Thanks for the update on using mesh vs chicken wire. However, how do you keep the mesh from sticking to the lantern fly tape? We live in a windy area, plus one of the "trees" of concern has six small trunks. Is the fiberglass strong enough to maintain space around each trunk in heavy wind? Also, it is baby squirrel season. So how do you keep small birds or squirrels from crawling under the mesh? I look forward to your advice. Thanks

Add more tacks and tape Amanda u were very clear on that 👌 .Blaine

Squirrels or birds will go under that mesh on bottom. That needs secured.

When the wind blows, won’t the Mesh Barrier attach to the Sticky Tape?

State Ag depts give it out and we couldn't find it ourselves (but they gave to us in DE)... we did find Industrial fly paper (a little less sturdy, but works) from Tractor Supply and online. Would be good to find a commercial source for this brown sticky paper.

Also, try stapling a hem at the bottom, some can fall down and get caught.

We hope it works out Kathy! So far, we have had reduced bycatch of invertebrates and no bycatch of vertebrate animals after using it for 2 seasons! That is a win!

For years gypsy moths were a big problem and they were combatted from the air by planes spraying insecticides on them. Why can't the same be done for the flies?

The sticky tape will capture non-harmful insects, including yellow jackets, which are attracted to lantern fly secretions.

Any chance you can give some brand names to search for the tape? Searching "sticky tape" isn't overly productive.

Hi Gregory. Here are two of the most common brands:
-www.amazon.com/Catchmaster-931-Giant-Glue-Trap/dp/B001QFDESS (less sturdy but cheaper, better for taping just a tree or two)
-www.web-cote.com/slf-tree-bands.html (more sturdy but expensive, better for taping 10-20+ trees - large scale effort).

One of the the most annoying things about these pests is that their grey color
makes them very hard to see when you are looking at them on the bark of a tree.
Just putting a different color screen or netting around your tree
would make them much easier to see and then kill with a fly swatter.
I wonder what would happen if I wrapped a white plastic trash bag around
our tree just below my trap ?

Plastic around the trunk of a tree is not good for the tree. It holds moisture against the trunk and invites fungus/disease. If you do this, it will have to be changed often and given a chance to dry out in between. Even the sticky tape holds moisture against the trunk and should be changed frequently.
