It's so hard to believe a movement we were part of in the early 80's is still alive and kicking - I'm 63 now and I laugh when my grandkids tell everyone about how cool their "goth granny" is and drag out my photo albums - The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and Type O Negative can still be heard blaring from my house - keep it up kids, it's awesome!
This isn't part of the British "goth" genre, or even a sub-genre. No one in the early 80s called it goth anyway. This is a weird, uncool German scene with shite music and even worse fashion.
@@junior4654junior there were definitely Brits who dressed like this, and there probably still are! They did consider themselves a type of goths and the ones I knew were into traditional goth music alongside industrial dance etc
they were just having fun. sometimes i wish i coudl be part of some subculture so i could find like minded friends. the positive comments on the original uploading were so cute
I mean, to be fair they're not being themselves, same with emos and all other subcultures where you dress or act different for the sake of being different. Before they became cybergoths i guarantee you they were lonely kids just looking for friends and a sense of community. So yeah, they're not being themselves if we're being honest here. But that's okay, they can do whatever they want.
I adored/still adore Cybergoths, so so much. Envious of their fashion and let's be honest, most could keep a better rhythm dancing than the majority of the keyboard warriors. I hope Cybergoths make a massive comeback💖
It's cool as hell. Sci-fi motifs have been popular for decades, and often run alongside alternative (gothic, rave, nerd, gaming, etc.) subcultures and interests. Just makes sense that they would merge. I think people (usually younger, we've all been there) tend to be more territorial about subcultures they feel at home in. That being said, cybergoth makes sense to me lol.
Hooked up with a cyber goth chick in '98, best experience of my life , i still have dreams of her, didn't work out due to work taking me out of that city , but on the gods I respected her style and loved that chick.
If history has taught me anything, it's that something deemed as cringey and uncool will one day come back as a huge fad with a younger generation. I look forward to suddenly seeing the cybergoth look rising from the grave.
If it's tied to music, (as all goth subculture is) then it can't be a fad unless the music dissapears from existence. If someone dresses like a cybergoth but doesn't listen to any of the music, they're a poseur and a fake goth.
Anything comes back, hell crocs were seen as trendy last year! Currently I think emo/scene are making a comeback. Idk I'm just part of the sub cultute so maybe it's that
I'm friends with a huge crowd of cybergoths from the early 2000s. most of them are more toned-down versions of how they used to dress and party but still go to the goth club to hang, just in a more subdued way. I think a new generation of modern cybergoth babies will rise up soon.
A girl in my art class at college happened to be a cybergoth. I was terrified of her when I first met her as I never understood her extreme image, but after spending time with her and getting to know her, she was an incredibly kind human being. She took me to her house (she lived with her parents at the time) and I saw her bedroom. It was entirely black with splashes of intense colour. Her parents were lovely...they had no gothic tendencies and said they just let their daughter find her happiness. We lost touch after college. I often wonder how life panned out for her. She was a great girl. Once I'd gotten to know her, I felt like I had a view from inside her world and it was one that was pretty much full of happiness and love. I never judged anyone different/unique ever again.
@@starshine311 I love that, I wish all alt subcultures could coexist in harmony everywhere but too many people have very fragile egos and can't accept there are people who are "different" in another way than theirs. that or people being insecure and having the whole "you're not more hardcore/crazy/weird than me!!" meltdown. hell, some people gatekeep their own subculture and bully newcomers out of the scene just to maintain some elitist club. sucks
That's true and ironic as the whole 'scene' thing started by not wanting to adhere to (mainstream) 'rules & trends' , and there they are trying to do the same within the scene. Sad really@@ruk7657
I've never known any of the Goth subcultures to shun any of the others. The entire premise of this video is flawed in my experience. Sounds like an American interpretation of bullshit they don't understand commenting of faceless American social media children, bullying others because they have no culture of their own.
Thatd be cool. Maybe by then we'll actually have legit cybernetic implants so I can live to see that. The cybergoths will re-emerge when cyberpunks become a reality. Or so the prophecy goes.
Happy Camper that’s cool. It’s too bad the Cyber Goths got so much shit. They were having fun and not hurting anyone. Besides, maybe the CG scene could have led to some interesting new takes on electronic music. 🤷♀️
I can bullshit on this video. I was in the early 2000 rave scene and knew many of these kids. They were totally accepted. They weren't "rave" enough is BS. Raves are pretty damn accepting.
After watching this video, I want to give the poor cybergoths a hug. Bullied everywhere just for doing something that brings them joy. Life sucks enough as it is. Let people find happiness however they can, as long as they aren't harming others
@@alexyo3927 how does it make him a bitch? To have some other dude make money off of his actions because the viking never agreed to a contract stating he wouldn't make money from the guys video. Seemed pretty legally ok, but I guess you can be butthurt without having the full story and just making assumptions.
@@alexyo3927 Also more importantly, to add to what Jesse said, the video was taken at Fuckparade, a counter protest to the commercilization of Loveparade, so having someone make money of a video taken there is clearly against that message.
@Bunker Sieben you got to have that mindset or you could not deal with the hostility you get. I never was a goth or so, but growing up in a pretty conservative area my friends and me also were kind of outsiders compared to the rest and we also thought that the lame ones are the mainstream folks.
This idea that goths are bullied for being goth is very peculiar since it seems to be contemporaneous with internet culture and culture outside of the influence of major cities (no goths used to develop in places without goth scenes before the web).
With how accepting the "emo" and "scene" community was, its kinda tragic that this was the fate of the cyber goth. It kinda brings me back to the rave episode of Samurai Jack. I wanna see a documentary of goth trends and the sub sects that it spawned. That'd be interesting
@Rodney Gore the emo kids you probably thought of back in the day was exactly "emo," it was just kids playing press up to what others thought emo was based off what mtv presented. Then what came later was scene with brokencyde (or whatever they are called lol). I know about a bunch of the super early emo shit as I dated someone that was right into it. She was probably the most down to earth person I met as she was more open to emotional situations. We broke up because her parents were super religious and against dating. Lol
i love the og video and it makes me happy seeing people do things they like doing. thanks for this video, cybergoth bridge dance has lived rent free in my head since 2011 and i never thought about the background until now
Out of all the odd internet tales you've given us background to, this is the most important. I've wondered for years about who these people were. Rave under a bridge....well damn, I'm' not cyber goth but count me into that party. Usually people who bash on this video don't have an ounce of creativity outwardly and are just plain vanilla.
While I could never pull it off (especially dreads, though those nylon dreadfalls could suffice I suppose?) I think cybergoth and cyberpunk fashion is fun and cool.
At least you have the self-awareness to realize that and the bravery to say it. I think jealousy is the main motivating factor in why people ridicule something like this.
I'm so glad to see a lot of these comments are so wholesome and kind. Imagine being an asshole to people just having fun and enjoying their lives. If they're not hurting anyone, there's never any need to be rude, that should be common sense.
Precisely. I am a CyberGoth myself and all I see when people mock us or anyone who simply stands out is, because they have simply failed to be or to understand us. In this topic, people are literally failing to understand the fun of the cross between Rave and Goth and how unique it is. People are literally afraid to break the mould
@@richardwheeler4973 Exactly! I'm goth and have no problem with cyberpunks."Goth" isn't a fashion statement, it's a lifestyle. It is what you feel more than what you wear though. You don't have to dress in all black 24/7 when you loaf around the house or sleep. You don't have to strictly be into Bauhause and Sisters of Mercy. If dancing under a bridge with good music and good friends makes someone happy then they should do it. At least they're more happy than the people bashing them. Like every goth, you see beauty in the darkness. Cybergoths see the beauty in creation after destruction. Hence the post apocalyptic theme. Kind of reminds me of "Destruction" from the Sandman graphic novels.
I really love the Cybergoth aesthetic so much so it's sad to hear that it's basically gone away.. It does explain why I can't really find Cybergoth stuff easily anymore.. That video is one of my favorites because they look so cool and the dancing looks so fun! Such a shame but I thank you for making this vid cause I had no idea. x3x
honestly, we just made our outfits ourselves. My go-to clubbing gear was nothing fancier than a pair of baggy skater pants, a brightly-coloured long-sleeve lycra women's top in whatever colour theme I wanted that day, sleeveless black t-shirt over the top and high denier black tights cut down for forearm bracers. Add to the that the gasmask, welding goggles and tie-in synthetic dreadlocks I mad and customised myself and you're golden!
I honestly don’t see what was the problem with this,I think cybergoths looked better than most goth and rave people since they balanced out the two extremes.
traditional goth here, im sad that this group is now basically dead. they didnt deserve all those cruel comments by both normal people or by us traditional goths.
i think those cyber goth dance got pumped in that time shuffle, jumpstyle, gabber dance etc, then shrinked to the core again. For sure the scene still exists tho
Totally!!! Why is it that if other people feel uncomfortable with something they need to be rude towards those who enjoy x activity? I mean, it's their problem if they don't like it, they should take responsibility for themselves by leaving and letting the others do their thing. Instead of making others responsible and insulting them.
the person on the far right in the black and green skirt actually killed 5hemself after being identified by a toxic friend and they were relentlessly bullied. so sad.
It always bothered me how many people from subcultures love to gatekeep and oust members of a slightly different subculture. "I hate that everyone is the same, but you're too different from us."
I found that, depending on where you are, these communities are either accepted wholly or rejected outright. Example; in Tucson (at least the club I went to), unless you creeped on people or were an incredible jerk, you were accepted immediately, whereas in Vegas they wouldn’t even acknowledge outsiders.
Honestly it makes sense. Bring too many in too fast it becomes toxic and gatekeeps anyway. To prevent you gatekeep and keep it traditional in liking this thing.
I find it weird as I used to be kinda on the scene in the UK and never saw any of that. In fact in the latter part of the 00's I was a photographer & DJ for a number of alt. nights and clubs in the South West (UK) and never saw anything akin to bullying through the different scenes, we just hung out together, weather it was at a rock night, goth event, EBM clubnight or just a house party. Hell even some of the festivals are still going (Infest, Resistanz etc) and their tickets sell out pretty quick. To say it's a dying subculture though is probably true as it's not getting younger people involved (mine was probably the last and even I've moved on since), but hey it's still a fun subculture with some awesome music. :)

I used to be goth but so many goths act so superior and look down on other goths. There used to be a local goth website and these older goths started making fun of a photo of teenage goth boy. I knew this boy and his mum was killed in a house fire After that he went to live with his uncle. His uncle kicked him out and he was living on the streets. This kid had gone through so much and these goths saying he's just a try hard baby goth made me so mad. They are no better than popular kids at school who bully the weird kids.

I remember the first iteration I saw of this. "Let's throw a fork in the garbage disposal!" What I can honestly say, is that the video itself was hilarious, but I really dug their style and vibe, and all I wanted was to hang out with these people. I live in the rest of Minnesota that isn't "The Cities".. Not too popular.
Damn, dude. As an ex-cyber goth I really have to say: this video is extremely accurate. Very well researched. :) To add: Industrial dancing is still a thing on most goth parties. Numbers actually only decreased by a little imo. But what actually changed is that you see almost no actual "Cyber Goth" anymore. Most people who are still dancing Industrial are dressing way darker than before. No more colors combined with black now. Only black. I think this way people who love dancing Industrial are being less bullied by old-school goths and so have more fun dancing at those parties. :) Kinda also the way I went now. But mostly because I didn't like that colorful style.
@Iraq Veteran 99 lol, did you go from a goth to enlisting like I did? I graduated HS and enlisted in the army in 2003. In highscool I was usually walking around in purple or green hair, always had my nails painted, and wore shit like black vinyl pants and those big frilly poet shirts etc. I guess I was between goth and industrial, I'd wear almost all the shit the people in this video did if I could (at the time).
When I went clubbing I always dressed in all black and wore dark makeup. I really had no idea of the history. I just never really liked mixing in bright colors.
I've always been a metalhead and back in early 2000s CG used to hang out in same places as us. They never harmed anyone and I always thought they were cool.

As someone who was an avid raver I’m so shocked people were mean to them, I see people from all walks of life at raves and everyone is so loving and accepting (because of the ecstasy lol)
M H nobody hated on them when I saw them at parties. We use to have a group of cute girls come through and do this with other go go dancing. They were sexy as fuck!
i had different experiences depending on the scene, bham rave scene in the mid 90s was shit but other places ppl were very open and friendly, maybe there wasn't enough X floating around in birmingham back then haha
It’s actually so healthy though, I don’t really like exercising but industrial dance is so fun and I think it’s a good way for me to get some exercise in
Funny because raves are supposed to be all about "PLUR" (Peace Love Unity Respect). At no EDM festivals or events that I've been to have I seen people discriminating against cybergoths or people dressed like that. TBH, at some festivals I've been to, like Ultra, those cybergoths are literally some of the nicest, coolest, and sweetest ravers out there
I don't think they where discriminated against per se. In the UK at least, techno is generally a scene that lacks pretense. Most clubbers dress casual, having a night out with friends, appreciating a favourite dj, getting immersed etc. So turning up dressed like this, and insisting on half of the dancefloor to perform your dance moves, you tend to stand out in an annoying way. Back in the day, often you'd get some guy rock up to the front row dressed like a loon and start busting out these mad OTT dance moves like they expect respect from everyone for it, it could get awkward as it is a bit mad really if your just trying to chill. That said, there's no need for people giving them grief for going for it under a motorway bridge, in fact that kind of behaviour should be strongly encouraged.
Yeah I can honestly say I never saw judgement against cybergoths, and this is coming from someone who went back and forth from the goth scene around Castle Ybor to the rave scene in Miami warehouses. Maybe it was just different in the US?
@@AliceintheRabbitHole Nah, I'm European (mainly UK raves, along with Dutch and German from my experience) and everyone was sound. Cybergoths are still alive and you see and meet them in goth festivals where there is EBM playing. Wave Gotik Treffen, Mera Luna, AMFI, Castle Fest are the biggest but also the smaller festivaks have them. They are a genre for itself and blend fine with Rivetheads. They are respected for their special lore, their own looks and choreographic. I personnally love to watch them dancing at concerts! I hope they will have more recruits for the years to come
Cybergoths are realists. They knew the future consisted of plague, corporate control, computer monitoring, co-modified sex and dystopia. The only sane response to that is to enjoy yourself to the max and they do.

There are far better bands that most people either don't know are industrial or haven't bothered to realize exist. (Did you know Rammstein is an industrial band?) Besides that, I was never a rich kid and never will be. As someone from the Netherlands i know all about the cybergoths, they were just as popular here, not quite as much anymore but they still exist, i myself have gone to a rave before as well (which are typically organized in public areas away from government surveillance). I had a cybergoth friend in highschool and didn't think much of it, being a goth was pretty normal around here and cybergoth was just a subgroup that was mostly based in clothing style. Their dancing isn't particularly remarkable, it's somewhere between how people dance at raves and a moshpit. It's funny to see how this blew up though because this video was never really weird to me, i'd seen people like this around often enough in the early 2000s, this really shows some cultural differences between the US and Europe.
Bwahahaha we have them here also sweetie. Our rave scene was fairly large for a while. Still happens not as much but if DJ DIGWeED was around you know.
Yeah, U.S. Americans aren't really fond of mixing up subcultures. Usually how subcultures evolve is that they start in those United States of America, and then mix and split in Western Europe. And as usual, Japan does its own thing.

This isn't part of the British "goth" genre, or even a sub-genre. No one in the early 80s called it goth anyway. This is a weird, uncool German scene with shite music and even worse fashion.

True and with hyper pop/ rage music on the rise I think it will be soon

Their second most popular band is Psyclon 9, named after Zyklon B, and the singer Nero Bellum scammed his fans for heroin three times, then scammed European venues, and paid nobody back. Google “Adversary calling out Combichrist on stage”. A lot of them are racists, sexists, homophobic, transphobic, classists, fascists. They were the bullies. You had to be a rich white sheltered asshole to be cybergoth, ever seen the prices on cybergoth clothes memes? It was the biggest call out since Goth Fail 1 and 2, and Adversary. Their whole culture is centered around bigotry and bullying. Do your research, because this guy who made the video did not.
@RUSTPUNKtv RUSTPUNKtv that’s a very interesting point of view but maybe that’s only like a niche goth community. Like rich goths

What I can honestly say, is that the video itself was hilarious, but I really dug their style and vibe, and all I wanted was to hang out with these people.
I live in the rest of Minnesota that isn't "The Cities".. Not too popular.
Damn, dude. As an ex-cyber goth I really have to say: this video is extremely accurate. Very well researched. :)
To add: Industrial dancing is still a thing on most goth parties.
Sorry that people can be dicks the fact that cosplay is a lot more accepting even though that community has their fair share of cringe

I absolutely love putting the cybergoths on mute and putting my fave songs on at the same time. Every song matches perfectly and it makes my heart happy seeing all those cybergoths going crazy to my favourite music. 😆
It’s because they themselves are missing out taking e at a rave. 🥴🤤 waiting for coronavirus to end so edc and my local raves can open up. 😤😤
i had different experiences depending on the scene, bham rave scene in the mid 90s was shit but other places ppl were very open and friendly, maybe there wasn't enough X floating around in birmingham back then haha
"Yeah! That's what they get for being happy and participating in activities that don't hurt anyone! Ha!"
It’s actually so healthy though, I don’t really like exercising but industrial dance is so fun and I think it’s a good way for me to get some exercise in

"Now, back to our scheduled Dangerous TikTok Challenge of The Month"
Innit mate. Being in the Hardcore and Hardstyle scene there's a mad amalgamation of beefcakes to cybers to chavs and we all get on fucking great.
I was a mega goth when I was growing up and ended up at raves with people who you thought would've ripped me a few years earlier but alas, we're just people. People on MDMA and Ket, but people ahahah.
Plur!!! Someone membies!! I membie plur no one bullied anyone the coke heads were the ones you did NOT want to talk to. Cranky janky mean coke heads
I hope they will have more recruits for the years to come
Honestly good for them. I’d be too scared to go out, dress like that, and dance like that in public lol. They’re very brave and honestly admirable!
That's what I'm saying! They go out there and do their thing. I love cyber goths.
Or maybe stupid enough to do it
Cybergoths are realists. They knew the future consisted of plague, corporate control, computer monitoring, co-modified sex and dystopia. The only sane response to that is to enjoy yourself to the max and they do.

@@ViViVex closeted cybergoth here. Not sure who bullied you dude but I'm sorry they hurt you so bad.
With the exception of one older trad goth I know, cybers have openly been against combiechrist. Mainly because they go beyond edgy into inappropriate territory, not only with their pr stuff but their music. (Throat full of glass caused a number of people to call them out to which they told everyone to get fucked). Not to mention the fact that both them and 9 are shit music anyway. There are far better bands that most people either don't know are industrial or haven't bothered to realize exist. (Did you know Rammstein is an industrial band?)
Besides that, I was never a rich kid and never will be. The majority of the kids I rolled with back in the day were borderline homeless and we'd go dance somewhere like under overpasses or in a friend's backyard to blow off steam and have some fun.
None of us are racist as far as I'm aware, or classist (unless you count eating the rich), and several of us are gay so never really saw any homophobia.
Maybe my group was isolated but everyone I've met to date has been polite and understanding. But we most certainly still see a lot of hate, even now that it's been many, many years past cybergoth prime. It's why I'm for the most part a "normie" now

I've always been a goth at heart. And I loved Cyborgoth. I'm so happy they still keep it alive. Goths of all types are the coolest real people you'll ever meet. All they want is to be themselves.
Ehhh I'm from the us and its the same lol all places seem to have the same groups in my experience
Where I come from you’d get your ass kicked for doing something like that. Also, I’m sad that Germany has yet again done something so horrible that we cannot let the world forget.
We have these dudes in the US too, well we once did. That's just the intenent being the intenent and trying to ruin everyone's lives

Ironic that communities so obessed with self expression and being yourself proceed to gatekeep what the "correct" form of self expression is.
Kinda like how the blue check mark mafia on Twitter are always going on about free speech and equal rights while simultaneously trying to deplatform and cancel everyone they don't like.

Those are what we call “elitists”. They’re usually ignorant old people that still follow the subculture since the 80’s or 90’s. They think they own the subculture.
All they do is criticize the younger ones about the bands they listen and the shit they wear. “You’re not a real goth” or “Real goths go thrifting or diy” are the most popular comments thrown around.
