Jesse Wants to Do Steroids

  • Have you asked yourself if it is time to take steroids? In this video I am going to cover the thought process that goes on when someone decides to consider the use of steroids and other PEDs and whether or not it is a viable discussion to have.
In this iteration of AX Jeff, we have a question submitted by ATHLEAN-X’s own Jesse Laico. Jesse asks the question of whether or not it is time he should consider the use of steroids to help his training. Noting that he has made significant progress in his strength and physique, he feels left behind. He notes that people he sees at the gym and on social media making “more” progress than him and that these people are showcasing a “greater” physique or strength levels. Jesse even notes that if he could achieve even a fraction of the progress they’ve made, he would be happy.
Now, this line of thinking is not isolated to Jesse. There are many people out there, especially younger than him and with less training history under the belt that consider the use of steroids and PEDs. Where do these thoughts come from? Well, it certainly has a lot to do with the use of social media. There are many out there who abuse steroids and showcase their accomplishments on social media and they are leaving an impression on thousands of people that I think is negative.
Some people might accuse me of virtue-signaling a natural status and consider that a negative. I will gladly wear that badge as I believe that the more you can achieve on your own with the assistance of performance enhancing drugs, the more self accomplishment you will have. Maybe you won’t look as big and as lean as who you see on social media, or maybe you won’t be as strong, but there is something to say about being able to achieve what you can without assistance.
I think it’s a bad idea to compare yourself to those you see on social media because often, they have a different starting point than you. If you take a look at someone like Larry Wheels, he likely didn’t start at the same place that Jesse did. His mass, strength, and even bone structure is, at a baseline, higher than Jesse’s. Even if he were a natural lifter, he likely would have a greater advantage at growing than someone who started with Jesse’s baseline.
Does that mean you are doomed? Absolutely not! When it comes to building muscle and gaining strength, I think that it is important to understand that the progress you make naturally is more impressive than what you can do with the assistance of steroids and other PEDs. If you can build muscle naturally, then you can attribute all of your success to the hard work you’ve applied to not only your training, but your recovery and your nutrition.
If someone were to start taking steroids, especially early in their training, how much of their success can they attribute to their own hard work? Was it them training hard, dialing in their nutrition, and prioritizing their recovery? Or was it the “extra help” that they received? I think that if you stave off that desire, you will be more proud of the accomplishments you have made naturally.
When you are trying to build muscle, you don’t need to look at what others have achieved in order to gauge your own success. There are plenty of people on the internet that have said Jesse’s progress is nothing to showcase, that they can achieve the same amount of progress he has in a fraction of the time. These people themselves have been influenced by what they see on social media and are likely showcasing their own insecurities.
You have to consider the health ramifications that come along with the use of sterodis and not just physically, but mentally as well. Jesse has been public about his struggles with depression and anxiety and we know that the use of steroids can affect this further negatively. There are also the physical health considerations that you have to take note of. This personal decision can have lasting interpersonal consequences. If something were to happen to you, you would not only be affecting yourself, but those that love and care about you.
So, before you consider taking steroids, there are some things you need to consider when it comes to your health as well as your own sense of accomplishments. There is nothing wrong with being a natural lifter and I would argue that it makes the progress you’ve made even more impressive.

You are lucky to have an opportunity to be trained by Jeff. I have been trying to sign up with Athlean-x for a long time but spots aren’t available. I'm very very happy with my progress and my body now after spending too many years just being skinny. Thank you both. Jesse, your transformation is amazing...plain and simple. Social media is a curse and leaves all of us feeling inferior to others. Its not worth it. Dump social media. If you're not a professional athlete and you're considering steroids, you MUST QUESTION how insecure you really are. This is the first time I saw Jesse in about 3 years. I didn't know the comment they read was from him, but to be honest the first thing I thought was "he looks the same as three years ago." Not a bad thing of course, he looks good and a lot of men would be contented to have his body. But if his goal was to get bigger all this time, chances are he is doing something wrong. Perhaps he got stronger, more conditioned etc, and again he looks good already. But if we are talking about hypertrophy, it was never this channel's specialty. If you watch scientists and coaches specializing on getting bigger, and if you read researches on hypertrophy, you will see they radically differ from Jeff's approach towards almost everything: Exercise selection, execution, volume, nutrition, etc. It has nothing to do with steroids. It is obviously and absolutely possible for a young man to get bigger than 165 if he consistently and specifically trains to get bigger for over 5 years, even if he has bad genetics and started at 135 bodyweight.

Jessie, the first videos I watched from Athlean X were about rounded shoulders and you were used as an example for the exercises. Sometimes I remember you then and think of how your posture improved, and that motivates me to continue stretching and strengthening my muscles to improve my posture. I know your progress wasn't achieved by the same five exercises in a video posted years ago, but what I'm saying is that I thought of you a few times and that motivated me to keep working on my goals. I don't follow social media and my ideal body type is more lean, like ballet dancers. So I, for one, think you look great and that your progress is really amazing. I hope you feel that, too.

I'd love to add that for people who are not competitive bodybuilders, the desire to do something as damaging as steroids comes from the belief that they're not enough. It's an insecurity. Working on eliminating those insecurities will expose the innate confidence underneath and be happy with their current gains while also seeking further improvements because they just enjoy training.

I watched a video about Jesse's progress about a year ago. Saw a comment to the effect of "Ha ha, I could put on that much muscle in two weeks", followed shortly by another comment that read, "Obviously you're on steroids". Two polar opposite conclusions drawn from the same information. The first person (likely on steroids) needed to elevate himself by diminishing Jesse's gains. The second needed to justify his own failures by diminishing Jesse's effort. Jesse should be proud that his results came from consistency, hard work and effort and not from a syringe.

Why does everything have to be about size; who wouldn’t rather have the perfect body of a classic boxer, or, for that matter, a classical Greco Roman statue (there are literally hundreds of thousands of examples to see all over Greece and Italy)? That kind of physique is lean, subtle and fits into a suit perfectly. “Thinish” when compared to someone absolutely fixated on bulk but who can’t throw a punch, kick a ball, do a high jump or even hold themselves up on a bar for more than three seconds. So what’s it all for? Certainly NOT aesthetics since I think Michelangelo knew a lot more about male beauty and proportionality than the modern steroid taker.

Like Jeff said it doesn’t really matter who but it’s critical to have someone in your life that can be on your side and tell you the truth because everyone who works out and looks at the mirror eventually begins to doubt their progress and needs someone in their life to help them get to that next level

Jesse I don’t know you personally but I have watched y’all’s videos on and off for a lot of years. Stand firm brother be you. Don’t listen to weak people comparing themselves to you. You have grown in an area that you might not be natural at but great gains and didn’t choose something else to get you there. Be proud of the work and time put in. Focus on being proud of what has been accomplished. Next step in strength training (to add to your natural strength training) strengthen your self internally. Seek God first, die to self, encourage other people who are struggling. Maybe someone starting where you did. Or wrestling with things you do. Growth in life is a lot more than the superficial and maybe this is where you have come to now. Who knows might not give up because of you. Humor is definitely a strong suit with and that could help someone. People get caught up superficial stuff and then death or something else comes and not ready. Hang in there stand firm. Don’t listen to the punks comparing. If they have easier results than you if not weak internally they don’t need to comment. Stand firm

And if you do, she is out. Because she does not want to worry about him dying of heart attack for no reason. We had such cases here in the Czech Republic. She says that noone needs that sh...t and if one is not willing to work hard and be satisfied with what you achieve, one should stop working out. If compare Jesse to himself, before and after pictures, he is doing great. And that is all that needs done. I must remember that too, I must not compare my situation to anyone's situation but my own. I know it isn't easy; our own thoughts can often be our worst enemy, but you don't need to chase the looks of other gym-goers or the praise of those on social media. There will always be someone trying to tear you down. Don't let that someone be you. Instead, tell yourself what I'm sure you'd tell anyone else in an instant that has gone on your journey. And that is that you're doing great, keep it up, and hold your head high! You should be proud of how far you've come.

My liver is far too functional and my kidneys are too healthy. Also my heart is way too small and I need these internal organs to be heavily degraded through the abuse of chemicals. Is there hope for me to be able to damage my internal physiology via chemical dependency?

Who asked 😂? Got a bit of a "main character " syndrome going? An organ can fail without warning even in the healthiest person.

Ur heart will grow from training and exercise anyway.
Liver and kidneys will be totally fine providing you don't pound oral steroids and live on mcdonalds.
You do understand that there are millions of people on steroids across the world... Most of which do them completely wrong... And we have how many deaths? How many bodybuilder deaths didn't include insulin, diuretics, recreational drugs, genetic clotting disorders etc? Bc if it includes any of those it's not from the steroids.
      Pretty simple stuff.
They aren't miracle drugs... It won't make Ur bench go from 405 to 595 and it won't kill you either. The truth is between the two extremes.

When I hit 55 my strength and my libido started to decline. I had my testosterone levels tested and found they were a little low at 300, and through trt I have them stable at ~800. My strength has gone up only a little and my libido a lot. I feel better in every single metric. I don't have any desire to increase my dose, and my doctor wouldn't let me even if I did. I wish Jeff would differentiate between this type of trt use and steroid abuse.
As a 30 year old with lifts like Jesse I'd never consider trt or steroid use. Honestly, he could put on some weight and gain strength at the cost of some body fat gain, easily. For his height 165 is light. I'm only 5'3" and weight a bit more than that with lifts about 20% less than Jesse.
In any case, I honestly think trt can be beneficial to those with low testosterone, especially for guys 50+ where their natural testosterone has dropped. I'd like to hear some distinction and discussion between those cases and those who are merely using it for gains.

Most people who say TRT really mean for performance above normal levels not for medical purposes to restore normal levels like you are doing so they give it a bad name.

He has to be this way for the girls crying in the comment section. But typically steroids monitored by a doctor are low risk. The risks are overhyped because of bodybuilders dropping 5 d balls a day for 2 years straight and wondering why they have liver disease. Then they lay in the hospital "hey kids don't do steroids, you'll end up like me."

Why do you need libido at 55?!?
The time for that has passed.

waaaaaaaah! He's not talking about limp dick. He's talking about people who want to look big and lift more. Libido problems with age is a different thing. And 1d a day a day isn't going to help you. It's fine you talked to your doc and got a dose that helps, but this isn't a medical channel. You don't have to look here for approval to take controlled steroids. Your doctor already gave that to you.

In 20 years when you are older and still strong and healthy, have a family, and can live each day without issues you will be happy you chose to not take steroids. Plus you can deadlift/ squat 3-4 times your weight? I would love to be able to do that. Be proud of what you accomplished. Truly amazing.

But Jesse you are doing so darn good, performance and how you feel inside is all that matters. If you start pushing that bodybuilder build, you're going to get more attention from men unless for women what do you have going on is the athletic build that women love, just like the swimmer's build and just like the Warriors build. You need not worry about looking like an elite bodybuilder. It's pointless.

"bodybuilders" display their inner issues for everyone else to see. Nobody is impressed that you spend too much time and attention on yourself. Congrats on picking up that heavy object and then putting it down. I hope it's a bigger object than your last object you picked up. Enjoy your ammonia byproduct from your excessive protein intake.

You look amazing Jesse & you've accomplished the unthinkable with where you started. I used to work out with my cousin & brother in law before I joined the Army. We used to watch the videos all the time & follow Jeff's programs, & you were very skinny lol. When I came back home the 1st time I couldn't wait to show them the progress you had made, & it reignited our passion to make gains. Don't let the haters bring you down. Stay strong brother, the true followers of your journey are proud of you.

As a slim guy (hard gainer), I've been watching this channel for more than 6 years. Seeing Jessie's transformation has been inspirational.
Hold yourself up man! 100,000 positive comments, but our insecurities will make us focus on the toxic 100 negative comments. Forget steroids brother, get a therapist, and transform the mind along with the body 💛. Much love to Athlean X

I remember Jessie way back when he started to become a regular on the channel and even the conversation with Jeff on doing a program to now. I’ve watched it all and I’m happy to say I enjoyed seeing the progress even helped me by saying if Jessie can do it so can I. your transformation is something I wish to get however I am happy with myself being 185 I lost 80 pounds in little over a year so be happy with that my man you have inspired many people. As I watched this video I honestly became disappointed that Jessie would try this i understand the mindset but again like Jeff said the accomplishments doing it all yourself outweighs any false sense of needing it for progress. Your doing great and I appreciate you both talking about this and all the aspects because if I know someone who thinks about it imma use this video
