Hey!! Honestly, I had no doubts by time I decided I was done with Yelp. I knew that my job prospects were pretty narrow and I wasn't interested in the hustle/linked-in culture. Honestly, coming to Korea was a very easy and clear decision to make. Of course I thought about friends and family, but I knew video calling would be possible. Granted, this was before covid so I intended to at least come back now and then to visit. That being said, I don't regret coming when I did.
Dang man thanks for your story. I actually have an interview this Tuesday for a sales role. Honestly, I'm not that happy since I already did so many reviews/research on the position. Honestly, it sucks because I feel like Yelp itself seems like a great place to work with good benefits and remote flexibility. But sales, cold calling? Man I understand if they're new leads, but people that have been reached out/stopped working with Yelp is just annoying to hear. In my opinion I feel like that's damaging Yelp more than helping. I currently work part time as a Barista and compared to other cafes near ATL I don't make that much. Been unemployed full time for almost 2 years, my previous job was also customer service but I couldn't take that due to lack of training/product information. I know recruiting is similar to sales but I feel like recruiting is definitely a lot better. You're calling people who were in your shoes before, everyone needs a job and will take any help they can get. Sales for a product... idk thats a bit different. Anyways, unfortunately If I land the role I might just take it. Beggars cant be choosers... maybe ill try it for like 3 months and transfer to a different role or company.

I actually watched your video because I am one of those small business owners wh has been called by a Yelp rep. I listen to her pitch for 45 minutes, but it looks like a high-tech protection racket (If you pay us we will suppress your competition’s impressions, and if you don’t we will suppress your impressions). Secondly, they own the data that they use to pitch you their package. I have no way of knowing that some department is suppressing our impressions from searches for six months prior to our business being listed for a Yelp sales call. I mean, when they own the data that they use to make the sales pitch, how do you trust the pitch? Any thoughts about that? Hope you are doing well in your new career.
Don't trust them at all. At this point just ask to be placed on dnc
Год назад
Hi! Sorry for the late reply. Honestly, I can't say either way if it's something to be suspicious of. My 100% unbiased advice is honestly to ignore the pitch and the fluff, and just really look into the program/how it works. I can say that even from working there, there was nothing about the software that screamed out to me as being shady. The people selling you, on the other hand, definitely will say anything to get you to buy. I've seen a lot of businesses do well with Yelp and it's a shame that their business tactic is such that it creates a lot of bad blood between their sales people and business owners. For what it's worth, depending on where/what your business is, it really is a low-risk investment for your business but you 10000% need to be on top of your analytics to make sure it's working for you. Thank you for the well wishes and good luck with your business!!

You did *literally* everything you could do, *literally* to find a job... Except write cover letters...because you "really don't like doing those"...??? And you were surprised that the only response you got was from the sales department of an online/web-based business, where the churn and burn rate was huge?? (Yelp is not a tech company, btw). At least you have the common sense to admit that you were crap at your job, lol! I listened to, literally, the whole video, bc I thought it was interesting that a SUNY grad, with a degree in psychology, decided to work at Yelp. And wanted to hear what your thoughts on the experience was. The clickbait is misleading, as this is more about your personal story than your Yelp experience. Many of us have had similar post college, first job in NYC experiences. Most interesting is seeing the same (old) story, told thru a millennial/Gen Z lens. First major difference is the amount of cursing! It's hard on the ears.... and I forgot already what the situation was, but... racist?? Was Yelp really racist? Or the co-workers were? Is that just a new, generational thing--ro pull the race card?? I am a minority. But I wouldn't use the race card unless I meant it. And could prove it. But it was a half hour ago, so I forgot already what was said. And lastly, with a college degree in psychology, one doesn't learn that, yes, a great team can help you love your job, but if you don't love your job, and you are not good at what you do, it doesn't matter who you work with!? "September is MY MONTH" and you have PTSD. Huh?? What did this have to do with Yelp again? I forgot already.

Sir, you talk about not following my video well but your comment reads as a rambling train of thought. I'm not exactly sure what your point was in writing this comment. You say you wanted to hear why someone like me decided to work at yelp...then you try to downplay my experience? It's great for you that you try to only use the "race card" when you feel like you can prove it. I don't know what your background is, but as a black person in this country, it'd be nice to pull out this card selectively. The fact that you use the term "race card" is already a huge dog whistle for me. You asked if Yelp was racist or were the coworkers. What was your point in asking that? Is there a practical significant difference between the racism being at the top versus in front of you daily? Maybe you didn't mean to be malicious in your comment, but if you want to comment on the experience of a millennial/gen z person, please come correct without all the boomer nonsense please. Thank you ❤️
@Davonté of the Mist Ah... The tone deaf "Come correct, without all the Boomer nonsense".... because that is an example of "coming correct??" I definitely followed your video. Which, again, was more about your personal journey than your Yelp experience. And yes! Absolutely there is a difference between a company being racist as a corporation vs the people you work side by side with on a daily basis being bigoted jerks. And I don't see how the people you were calling could be racist.... but who knows! But, as so many other ageists out there right now, who think everyone of certain age is a "Boomer" and has no advice to give.... and doesn't want to be mentored at all, I find it humorous that you found my comment a rant (because your video was so focused regarding the points you wanted to make? Again, a clickbait issue). But, like so many others, no one wants to stop and reassess WHY they hate their job. Why is their close rate so low? Or why is no one even calling for interviews, when applying for jobs everywhere (without a cover letter!). At Yelp, people just bailed. No one was helping them, encouraging them, and yet they were paying them while people were not being at all productive or successful. It is a vicious cycle and just getting worse. Regardless what one makes. You started by thinking the pay at Yelp was great. Once you added in the stress of the job, they pay didn't seem so attractive (you say at the end that the pay was not great). See the problem?
So this whole is video is because you were not good at sales? I mean just find another career and move on, is not for everyone, I’m surprised you said you’re from NYC 🤷🏻♀️
It wasn’t you who was bad at your job it was the company you represented that was the problem. Everyone has known since the early 2000s yelp is a hostile site. I’ve been a webmaster since 2001 and knew to stay clear of yelp. It was something you did not know.
I have a question..do they tell you guys to bury customers when the customers curse you out or deny the advertising?

I can only speak for myself, but honestly I've never been told to do that and I've never heard of anyone being told that. We're honestly just taught to tough out a rough call and let it cool off for a few weeks before trying to contact again. There were definitely times sales reps did some magic to try to hit their quotas. But it was never really anything that affected the businesses. Hope that is helpful!

As long as I have other things supporting me and I don't have to depend on money from a sales job, I still think I can manage. let's see what happens
That sounds like not a bad situation. If this is kinda a side hustle type thing, then it may be easier to distance yourself mentally and not worry so much about the day to day and policies and the like. The good thing is you could probably go 5 months or so in the beginning where you don't really have to do very well and still reap benefits 🙊
Any updates??
@@Cinderbellieeeee they weren't flexible enough for me. So I passed on it. Moving forward with my own business. Why not be my own sales for my own business. Right? 🙂

Yelp blows, this just confirms and validates my thoughts about them. Also, spreading the word to avoid them like the plague
I already know I’m own the chopping block. It is stressful because they put it on you Closing is you Job!!! the working environment is nice with the perks. But I don’t stress because what is for me will be for me and is already mine.
Thanks for this video! Will for ever help people for the next 20 years

What a powerful story that you shared with us. I used to live and work in New York City and made 6 figure income self employed. I am a former employee of Yelp actually I was rehired by them in February of 2024. I hit quota for my first two months and then they moved me to Franchise sales then because I was not hitting my numbers, they put me on the Plan. I had relocated from New York to Florida so they knew I was going through a tough transition. I was let go August 1st. I am focused on rebuilding my future. I understand all the pain and anguish you went through. This position can cause a lot of anxiety and stress. Your story will inspire many young people. The grass is greener on the other side when you water it. You made your plan and proud of you for stepping into your purpose.
Thank you for the kind words!! And yes, hopefully it helps someone. I'm sorry for the experience you had as well, I wish you good luck for you future plans!! 😊
Thank you for your testimony!
You don’t recommend people to work there and I don’t recommend Businesses to sign up with them!
I did them in the opposite order. I worked in Korea came back and thought my life was really coming together because I got hired at YELP...
It was horrible for my finances and mental health.
😭😭😭😭😭😭 oh no!! Are you still working there?
@ Thankfully no. I'm a marketing consultant now and coincidentally do some work for an English school in LA. I don't miss Yelp at all. I do miss Korea though.
@@bulgariastan Nice!! I'm happy it's worked out for you!!
@@bulgariastan yeah man, its a psychotic business model if you think about it. They force you to go through the abuse of being cussed out & hung up on by ppl who've already been called 100 times and Yelp calls it "being tenacious". That's some real psycho shit there
Thank you for posting this! I am at Stony Brook University, too so this is definitely really helpful!
Happy you found it helpful!!
Loved the story man. It kind of sounds similar to my situation, I work in tech support and I'm just miserable answering phone calls almost every minute of my day. I've always wondered and thought about teaching abroad and I really want to make the jump, but of course I have a lot of doubts. Were there any doubts you had before you decided to make the jump to go teach in Korea? I would love some more insight!
It doesn't help to give it a try! There are people who have had positive experiences. Good luck to you!
Devonte your video had me dying cause the world turned into marshmallows but the difference is these customers aren’t in your face and if you’ve done retail for years I can’t help but laugh but your video was entertaining for a new York minute !
I made it to the second round at Yelp and have an interview tomorrow for an Account Manager role. Wish me luck
Hi, did you end up getting it?
Great insight, great content! Subscribed :)
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you enjoyed!
I was in the gig ever so briefly after I finished up with undergrad. It was my first "real" job, and it sure was a soul crusher "smiling and dialing" ALL. DAY. LONG. and getting screamed at by business owners who had already been solicited literally hundreds of times previously by Yelp as they told me to go fuck myself. It really takes a nasty toll on your head space dealing with that place every weekday, or at least it did me. Maybe I am just weak and not cut out for such an existence, but I have since gone on to the advertising industry and I love my job. I would have been miserable had I of stayed at Yelp
Glad you found something you're happy in!
Is the money good though ?
Please do a deep dive on Yelp. So glad you love Korea!
Thank you! And unfortunately it was quite a while ago that I worked there so my memory isn't the most reliable 😅 That being said, I'm not sure I have enough to do a deep dive on yelp honestly. Most of what I can talk about is just my day to day working life there and general surface knowledge that most employees have. However, there are some documentaries out there that do dive deep into the business of Yelp that you might found helpful!
How much do they pay for training Davonte?
You get payed your regular salary!
I worked for a massive coffee chain and had hot coffee thrown at me and wfh yelp is more stressful. Yelp management cares about their bonuses not the company.
OH SHIT LMAO i am so sorry that happened to you!! And honestly I can see that. I think Yelp could even break down a war vet

Yelp was rude when I reported the fake review from our competitors
Michigan is a bad territory also . I mean just take a look at the numbers there. I would of asked for a different area
Wow that is one hell of a title 😂lol
😂 omg i am glad i watched this .. some or my friends said having yelp on my resume would be great i have them as my back up but i already have my tech job at a hospital lol 😅 i will not go back to this hostile life … I honestly know if excel only cause i worked in a tmobile call center and i was on a team that was number one in the nation .. and im great at sales but i ultimately became burnt out … even if u excel and do the job well you will eventually get tired and burnt out 😂 .. so when they follow up .. i will politely decline … i have a whole month til training it starts in April .. they kinda sold me cuz it is remote i got $500 for a decoration office budget and an apple MacBook laptop … its a bit better than your experience but ive worked for a billionaire dollar company so there is no way to avoid 😅 that hostile environment.. and ill never go back to T-Mobile
I just had an interview with them today. 😂 It was a terrible interview.

Lol well sure yeah that's a valid way to see it
Then there’s this guy 😂
That’s because you are a dirtbag and he clearly could never be.
The tone deaf "Come correct, without all the Boomer nonsense".... because that is an example of "coming correct??"
I definitely followed your video.
Girl take a nap
So this whole is video is because you were not good at sales? I mean just find another career and move on, is not for everyone, I’m surprised you said you’re from NYC 🤷🏻♀️
This was phrased a little harsh, but I was thinking this just sounds like (inside) sales to me.
You are hilarious
🤣🤣 thank you!!

get a new first name
It wasn’t you who was bad at your job it was the company you represented that was the problem. Everyone has known since the early 2000s yelp is a hostile site. I’ve been a webmaster since 2001 and knew to stay clear of yelp. It was something you did not know.
I have a question..do they tell you guys to bury customers when the customers curse you out or deny the advertising?
I can only speak for myself, but honestly I've never been told to do that and I've never heard of anyone being told that. We're honestly just taught to tough out a rough call and let it cool off for a few weeks before trying to contact again. I don't know what happens behind the scenes, but I never got the feeling or saw any reason to think that anyone at yelp was sabotaging businesses.
Not to say that shady stuff didn't happen. There were definitely times sales reps did some magic to try to hit their quotas. But it was never really anything that affected the businesses. Hope that is helpful!
