    Think of it like this, books are keys to worlds you never thought could exist. Buying keys to unlock your imagination and filling a room with one seems fine to me.

    Yeah, I normally get my books from a library, but if I love a series, I will buy the whole thing. I read, like, two books a week, though, so I'm basically addicted to books. I'm a huge fangirl.

    I agree with you libraries are great but having my own book collection makes me happy. When I want to reread a favorite book I can go to my bookcases to search for it. (I'm an insomniac so in the middle of the night libraries aren't open. Access to books is a major issue also because I live in a tiny desert town with a sucky library!) I love to drive two hours to Las Vegas once a month to visit a Barnes and Noble bookstore (that is the closest one to me.) The 4 hour road trip is worth if I find amazing books! :)

      well... she does have a lot of, as I call it, unprofessional, 'youtube' cuts every few seconds of her footage so it isn't very surprising.

      I'm sorry, but how is it unprofessional if she, or any RUclipsr for that matter, cuts her videos? If she kept every second, the video could be a lot longer than it already is. It helps when it comes to having to look over notes or a script if they are written. Also, what if she didn't like one part of it? She is more than welcome to cut out bits of a video as she feels necessary, no matter the context of the situation that might demand it. So really, it's not unprofessional at all. If a RUclipsr kept in parts where they got up to go to the bathroom during filming or sneezed, would you want to sit through that where you wait a few minutes for them to get back or to reorganise what they were saying before sneezing? The reality of it is, cutting is part of editing videos, and for a concise and comprehensible video, cutting them is actually much more professional than you think.

    • @jonsnow8756
      @jonsnow8756 7 лет назад

      The Mad Hattress A more professional RUclipsr would not need to cut as many times as this RUclipsr does. That is all I have to say. Planning is key.

      Jon Snow [Targaryen] [DAKINGINDANORF] There are often many things we do not account for, even if we have a plan. It's not uncommon to use cuts in RUclips videos.

    In addition to your reasons, I buy books because I like to mark them up. I like making notes in the margins, underlining, and bracketing parts that I think are beautifully written, interesting to think about, or memorable. Oh, I draw in little smile faces at the parts where a book makes me laugh. :)

    You are still quite young. The older I get, the more I realize that I don't want as much "stuff" in my life. I do have a family though (and all their things to deal with) and we move very often and it's just exhausting to unpack so much stuff on a regular basis. I am also a book lover and will buy, rent and download books. I don't reread books so I trade in, swap or give away many of the ones that I own. As we're facing yet another move very soon, I am already starting to rethink the ones I still have. I hope to one day just have one smaller bookshelf with just my most loved books on it. I am happy that the lesser loved ones are being enjoyed by someone else rather than collecting dust. :)

      @sArAhOnEoFaKiNd 9 лет назад +1

      I'm 18, living with my parents, and we're going through a move right now as well, and I feel the same way! I find that the less clutter, the better. I buy physical books that I know I will read and buy ebooks of those that I'm not so sure I'll re-read. I love me a good bookcase, but if I owned every book I've ever read in my lifetime, I'd be caged in my own mountain of books! Hahaha :) I'd rather my lesser loved books be read by somebody who'll enjoy them as well!

    • @thereaderbug398
      @thereaderbug398 9 лет назад

      That's a good thing to learn early! The library is great now that you can download books to an e-reader from there. I don't like to buy books if I don't think I will really like them but I will rent anything and have found some amazing books that I wouldn't have thought to purchase. I agree that it would be insane to own every book that I have ever read. That's way too many! I do love lots and lots of books, I just don't have to have a physical copy of them all. :)

    in high school I had a friend come over to my house. I had spent 3 years with of paper route money turning my room into a MASSIVE library. He thought it was the coolest thing he had ever seen. Until then he never read for pleasure. He was so blown away I went ahead and loaned him a few books. Now 15 years later he is about to publish his first novel

    Hooray for being a bibliophile! Books are truly amazing and you can never have too many! I just wish I had a job to buy even more, but I digress. The tangibility of a novel is magickal. As weird as it sounds, the texture and smell of a novel can be quite comforting. To be a bibliophile is to love books in all that they are, to collect, cherish, and enjoy them. The information you read in a book can be much more easily retained besides reading it off of a screen, which allows you to connect to it more. I think its a good point to bring up, though, in keeping the publishing industry, as well as thousands of authors, in business as well. I aspire to become an authoress, myself, but I don't know how soon that will happen. Maybe once I'm out of school I can get the novel I've begun published. I'd be more than happy to read anything you put out as well!

    I just borrowed a book for the first time in 4 years. Transportation issues was one reason but also because I like being in control of how i read and when i read. there are books i'll buy but I won't get to them for months. sometimes if a book is feeling tedious, I'll take breaks. the 2 week timetable of library books makes it feel like forced reading which turns me off. plus i hate waiting lists for books or worse, not being able to renew books because of a waitlist.

    Love this video! I completely relate!
    I have to say that honestly, I never feel like I'm wasting my money on books. Sometimes when I splurge on pricier makeup there's a tinge of guilt. With books, I just don't have that. I just envision that pretty dream of a library of my own in my house. I don't know if I'll ever want children, but I don't know of anything that would represent me more to pass down that my beloved books.
    Like that one lady in Inkheart! I feel like I'm collecting portals.
    Truly, I don't even think I can be trusted in a library. Because I feel like when I fall in love with the book, it just bonds with a piece of me and I'm holding something that is soo.. ahh, I don't even know how to describe it. But, simply put, if I truly love this book I just read - I need it on my shelf and there's a possibility that library might not get it back.
    So, I save everyone the grief and go buy books! I might not always be able to afford them brand new, but I can usually swing them used!

    All my books are ebooks as they are cheaper. I don't read physical copies. The only physical copies are have are my Hunger Games Trilogy. I love my kindle paperwhite. I find it more convenient for me as I like to read at night in the dark and it saves space and I can carry it around with me when I go out. It's also more comfortable to hold than a book. I love physical copies too. I often go into bookstores to browse and look at all the books and stuff. It's a nice atmosphere, but they are so expensive. I'd rather save money and buy an ebook copy :)

    I have both a Kindle Paperwhite and a huge library of books (about half the size of yours, which is still quite a sizeable collection!) and I will forever love the experience of buying a physical copy. A Kindle is extremely handy and wonderful and comfortable to read with, and it's especially a HUGE life-saver when I travel, but I think I will always love having physical copies. I agree, they're one of the best collections you can have.

    I'm in a bit of a pickle with this subject. I agree; authors deserve to get paid and get the recognition of sales for their hard work. However, on the flip side. libraries offer a warm, safe place to go for many people who might not have somewhere else. The internet at libraries also helps a lot of people find job and exposes so many people to knowledge they might not be able to find otherwise. In short, I support publishers, but I think I support libraries more. After all, the library did buy the book and. if it does well, will buy more copies of the next one.

  • @rinceyreads

    Love this video and definitely agree! In a similar vein to the last reason, I want to support the wonderful authors who wrote the stories I love so much. I think they deserve the money from my pocket [no matter how minimal actually gets to them] for creating great art.

  • @LiteraryLindsay

    Great video! I think you covered the topic really well and from all angles. I buy books because sometimes it is a lot more convenient for me buy a book here and there than to go to the library, grabbing a stack of books, and then having a limited amount of time to read these. This used to work well when I was a kid and had more free time, but now having my own books allows me the luxury or reading 1 book in a month or 8 in a week according to what my schedule allows.

  • @jasminvalerie

    I get you Kat. I understand you. This is literally me trying to explaining book-buying to my dad. Yes, I've recently started going to a library, but that's only for books that I'm iffy on. Especially if it's a series, I'll read the first one and I usually fall in love with it and end up buying the rest in the series. Most of the time I know I'm going to love the book so I'll just buy it. I usually reread my books and every time I do, they take me back to when and where I read it the first time.

  • @joshuawhere

    I think of them as decoration. Now that it's possible to carry books around in your phone hard copies aren't strictly necessary, but a shelf stacked with books is really nice look at, especially for someone who's read most of them, since you can remember the stories as you look at them.

    I live in Croatia recently they started publishing books for the newsstands so you can buy some of them really cheap (like 3 chocolates = 1 book) I like to support that, secondly I buy many books in online charity auctions to help animal shelters so it's a win win situation, third I like to spend a little bit of my disability check (is that how you call it in English) on something long lasting (clothes you fall in and out of love with, makeup has an expiration date, concerts which I adore last for a few hours and that's it), books last for ever plus the look on the mailman's face when he brings me my BookDepository order is priceless :)

    i am the same! I buy sooo many books because I LOVE books. And I, too, am working full time and like to spend my extra money on buying books. No one should judge you for buying books or anything you enjoy really. As long as you are taking care of your other responsibilities you should be able to spend your money any way you please. I think books are beautiful, as well, and have recently gone back to buying them after a long hiatus from reading. The best way to support an author is to buy the hard cover version of their books. I am not an e-reader type of person. I tend to forget about the books I've started when I've attempted digital reading and I like the feeling of a hard cover book in my hands. I do, however, believe that if I'm going to spend money on a book, I better read it. It's nice to have the library, but I personally think its embarrassing to have a wall of dead bodies that I didn't kill myself. ^.^ Woah, that turned dark super fast.

    I buy books for a couple reasons: 1) I can lend them to friends so I can discuss with them my favorite and least favorite things in the book. 2) I can re-read them whenever I want 3) I like reading at my own pace and don't like the time restrictions library books come with. 4) I would rather have an actual paper book than an e-book. 5) I think books will eventually become a digital thing, and one day I will be who everyone comes to for paperback or hardcover books :D

    Don't let the haters bring you down, you get to choose whatever you want to spend your money on and you are definitely responsible enough to know that rent and other expenses come first. I worked for a year and saved up enough money to go to England (leaving in two days) and I'm on a scholarship for school so I don't need the money for anything right now and I get a lot of hate for going abroad and not having a job at the same time.

    I thought this was a brilliant idea for a video! A lot of people don't understand why I don't just go to the library (my account is being blocked because I have a terrible memory when it comes to returning things and my being too lazy to pay fines might be a reason...) instead of buying books and really, I don't think I care anymore because it's what I like to do :) I'm really loving your hair and you should use that "surfer dude" voice more often, it's hilarious.

    I'm like Meggie from the Inkheart trilogy, every time I look at a book on my shelves, I can hear the words and imagine my favorite parts from the book. And I would so buy your book cause I know it will be awesome!

    I had that problem when I was young, too. I saved my birthday money and found a babysitting job and that is how I bought the Harry Potter books when they came out. For now it might be best to use the library, especially if your parents dictate what you do with your hard-earned money. Wait until you have your own place and space to have a library. It's something to look forward to. :)

    It's weird because I sort of collect books and my sister called my a hoarder but I don't care. It just helps me with my imagination and my writing since I one day want to be an author too.

    Don't get me wrong, I love all your vids, but it has been a little while since you posted anything about writing, and I would really like to see a new video about how your stories are going or more of your useful tips, or perhaps even the next installment of the factors of a great novels series. I always find those really helpful and I look forward to your next video. :)

    I hate always having to justify to people why I buy/collect books rather than go to a library. Everyone has their own hobbies and obsessions. Books are mine. Like you said, I like to support the publishing industry as well. Thanks for this video!

    I just love having books. I love holding them and picking them up to read them at random so that's why I buy books. I've been trying to do complete rereads more often but I do pick up books I've read already often enough to make it worth it to me to purchase books.

    I always used to be against people who bought every book they wanted to read, but watching this has changed my mindset. I guess that it is just like any other collection, and if you absolutely love books themselves, you should be allowed to have a collection as big as you want. I do think that some people buy all their books just so that they can show off all their books, or because they feel pressured to since all the big BookTubers do it. As long as it's just because someone genuinely wants a collection, I completely agree with it now :D

    I love books! But I'm not a big fan of e-books, I love it when I walk in to my room and see plenty of physical books on my shelves. It's just so amazing!
