I made this video using footage of Sister Nancy at an early performance in Jamaica as well as a variety of film shots in and around Kingston, Jamaica in 1981 and 1982. I also spattered some early Dance Hall footage from the late 1970s. I then synced everything up to a digital recording producing the end result.
Sister Nancy was an early Dance Hall pioneer who did her take on Toots & the Maytals original version of the song Bam Bam. The song didn't really gain popularity or notoriety until much later when it appeared in commercials and a spot in the movie "The Interview".

Truly a legend her music wasn't really noticed til 30 years later and because of movies belly put her on the map plus commercials.
She was noticed in the 90s. But Belly bought it back. And she had to sue her producers to get paid for it.

Growing up in Hawaii we have our language of our own and I can kinda keep up... love seeing the sugar cane. Reminds me of John holt police and helicopters. The fights are different but not. Finally stopped burning the cane a few years back... black ash falling from the beautiful island sky. Island music just hits different.
