I could not be more thrilled about this chance to see Ewing's Tosca complete!
thank you so much!
How nice to see Tosca with Maria Ewing. She is my favorite opera singer, a singing actress 100%
…I fondly remember these very special TOSCAs ,directed by the wonderful Marta Domingo…in my opinion, the way this opera should be done! Maria ,Placido and I, all felt how rare the electricity was on stage that night…thanks for rescuing this performance…
J
Thanks, Sir.
Maria Ewing touches me so much.. her deep understanding of this insecure instabile woman, longing for C.s love... her deep understanding of what her character feels... Watching her is so intense!
…. We did Tosca together in Covent Garden, Maestranza ,Sevilla (the very first opera performed there) and another new production in Los Angeles…3 very special operatic experiences!!! Each one different from the others…..you had to be there to understand what I’m talking about….
@@justinodiaz6501 can you tell more about Maria Ewing? How was she as a collegue, as a person? I adore her, she is the reason why i started to sing.. she is such a big inspiration for me. Her intelligence, her truth in every character... this is true art for me
@@musicus9 …for one,her husband was the great Peter Hall.I imagine they had interesting talks about acting….nature gave her a wonderful expressive face which she she used very well!…my god, those eyes!!! Same thing with her Cherubino ! The last 4 Fígaros in NOZZE I did at the MET were with her…she was great of course….
…also did a few CARMENS with her in Tokyo….same thing….always Unique!
@@justinodiaz6501 I was fortunate to see the original production of Amadeus on Broadway which Peter Hall directed. Now their daughter Rebecca is carrying on the family theatrical tradition!
Thank you for sharing this tape! Domingo is magnificent, and Diaz very good. I have had some worries with Maria ewing's high range, but she is an artist I appreciate, and she gives much dignity and fragility to her Tosca.
YESSSSS!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Bravo Crivello, very welcome upload, mil gracias. Though Ewing, RIP, was controversial, somewhat deserved, she does well here. Of course, the Great Domingo is in beautiful tone, compelling, and superior. Diaz as Scarpia is nothing but total enjoyment. A pity the lighting had not yet been figured out yet by tv producers back in the 90s, but, we make do with what we got. At least key moments in the audio are ok. Wonderful in any case. Bravi a tutti.
What a gift!
Mme. Ewing’s diction is PRISTINE. The upper part of her voice is in rough shape (those Salomes took their toll perhaps). She’s a lyric soprano who pushed her voice too far into dramatic rep.
Maria Ewing was Tosca?! 🤯
Io quella lama... my God...
1:51:29 is the vocal equivalent of the blind leading the blind.
Diaz is fantastic; Domingo is wonderful. But, what's wrong with being a terrific, beautiful lyric mezzo (marvellous Cenerentola, Cherubino, Rosina, etc.)? Why chuck all that talent away pretending to be something you clearly are not?
I did skip to hear the Vissi D'arte. This is called vocal masturbation. I hope she was having a good time.
actually her vissi d'arte is quite good
@@musicus9 I don't agree at all. The middle is foggy (weak from pushing and "acting"). There are some rich top pitches, but again, she is maturating through the entire thing; too much too much of the time, all one thing, as if there is no audience, just her ego. She cannot even sustain top pitches. Dreadful.
@@josephcollins6033 yes, her voice is not good for this repertoire, and she damaged her voice by singing Tosca, Salome and Butterfly again and again. But her acting is outstanding and the fact that she doesnt pretend to do sth, just to make it more interesting for the audience, thats real art actually. She loves the simplicity which is very strong, everything she does is coming from her inside, thats whats very fascinating for me.
@@musicus9 you’re very perceptive, thanks.
@@justinodiaz6501 no, I have an understanding for authentic art. She doesnt pretend to be Tosca, she IS Tosca. Most singers try to make happen. The singers job is not to entertain the audience, he/she should try to really understand the character, not to be focused on trying to to do special things... Ewing herself said many productions are "full of ideas, but missing the point"... she is right.
