If you do seperate the general method of defense is to just charge right at the ball and ignore the fake entirely, if they hit the ball over you, you hit them and your teammate gets the ball. As an ssl myself I totally agree. That last touch on an air dribble can really bait ur opponent as it’s really unpredictable and I think it is very underrated and underused in lower ranks. I use this play a lot and I find that it works in my lobbies quite a lot of the time even against some pros. What makes it so successful is that the dribble also creates so many more opportunities with what you could do with the ball and I would say it is one of the most effective and basic plays in the entire game. Interestingly, I think freestyling has taught me to air-dribble like this and it comes from a very similar philosophy. When freestyling you want to stay in control while keeping your options open which is why the "dribble" air dribble is so OP. Every hard touch you get with the ball changes its momentum almost instantly, allowing one to theoretically air dribble forever, and the fact that it makes space between the car and the ball means that they can also go for a reset after every touch. I think this is really strong in 1s, but in 2s it will get shut down easily since the META is ballchasing as 1st man and forcing high, so the 2nd man will get easy possession on the backboard
Wow, I can't believe I never thought of this. Ground plays for me revolve a lot around bounce dribbles and less around normal dribbles or carries, yet I never thought about translating this to the air. The threat of bounce dribbles are the same thing, of potentially explosive power or changes in trajectory whenever the attacker chooses. In many times with a good bounce dribble you can simply watch the defender and change your play to their movement instead of just dribbling and flicking. In the air this incorporates the same thing of deciding how to form your final explosive touch before their net. Placing that last touch just out of their reach is the best way to finish an air dribble it seems, because faking into a flip reset or a deadly bump is just so much easier after doing this. Thank you for opening my eyes, because I've always been a strong ground player in 1s, but never figured out how to translate this into the air.
true, but keep in mind it has the same weaknesses as bounce dribbles. Which is that it's weak against multiple opponenets, it takes a lot of space. Hence why most dribbling in 2s and 3s is just normal dribbling, 2 touch air dribbling is mostly effective against 1 defender, any more and it becomes unreliable.
@@ragegaze3482 I’d disagree with the ground version. I think ground dribbles are great against two opponents since you can easily break into another option to beat the first usually. Plus depending on your option you have a lot of freedom to stay close to the ball compared to just catching and flicking which forces a flip and puts the ball away from you. I’d say in the air though you are right about this and it does lose control easier. Though I guess I’d have to test that compared to normal air drivvles
Fantastic topic Wayton! I didn't watch the whole thing, but the explanation of Glue vs Dribble is on point. The "dribble" one is better and elevated my game just before I went from mid/high GC2 to SSL (not the only factor) a couple years ago. A friend was telling me that all the pros do air dribbles like this and I was stuck on trying to glue because of extended air dribbles (30 seconds and higher). I call it "gapping" instead of dribble, because you're deliberately making gaps. Took no time at all to change and only took And I do think it's easier to do, since you have more forgiving room for error.
I have been using this way of airdribbling for years now and always wondered why so few people do it because it is like an easy version of a flip reset. Loved the way you're explaining it. There's just one more possibilty that I would've liked to see you cover: The Pass option. If you're playing 2v2 or 3v3, bait 1 or 2 defenders into going for the ball and then slam it into the backboard or to the side of the goal, giving your teammates a free shot. The only downside is that if your teammates commit with you, they are leaving an open net for your opponents
Brilliant, I've never seen anyone put words to this... And the irony is... most air dribble tutorials teach the 1st method. Its funny. The "uglier" air dribble is (usually) the better one.
Spookluke didn't say that. he said that If you wanna get champ faster, you should focus only on game sense. but then you'll get hardstuck in champ until you start getting your mechs up.
4:14 was glue and you counted it wrong to prove your incorrect thesis. Also this is very easy to save depending on the angle. If its from the corner, stay in the back of net it will always land back low, if it's above the next cross cut from wall as it's always high center, if it's mid field you already screwed up because you let them set up rather than killing the balls momentum BUT if this does happen, go tall and flat to counter the hit and call for backup OR tornado nose spin high and carry out like zen.
Flakes gave out these secrets in his roads to SSL back in 2019 and still barely anyone uses them effectively. It's all about that last touch in the air dribble. Its main purpose is to outplay anyone that challenges you. You can put the ball behind them in most situations and you'll likely score off of that alone as long as you recover well. The counter to this is to pick the best position where you can cover the entire net and just wait for that last touch from your opponent or until they're out of boost before you decide to go for the save. Even with this counter, it's still very difficult as you cannot allow the opponent to get too close to your net otherwise they'll score regardless. Edit: You can also always fake jump to bait out that last touch but just make sure that you're covering the net when doing so.
100% correct, I think the main key imo is that you can't let them get that close in the first place. It literally doesn't matter what shot technique they are doing it's dangerous if you let them into your box. That's why I think rocket league defense is a system based around 2 people, if you don't have 2 defenders the attacker always has the advantage.
@@luismvg11 I do not mean consistent acceleration. You can air dribble at a slow speed until they challenge, and then accelerate up. I could score it on you if you need.
@@luismvg11it doesn't matter, even if they know it's going to happen it still will go over them, or worst case scenario you 50/50 and your teammate picks up the ball and you lose nothing from attempting. If you air dribble with space then they are prone to prejump you, in which if they make contact with the ball, your 50 is garbage. If you outplay them, their teammate will pickup the ball for free since you normally only get 1 outplay touch. That's the inherent risk to 2 touch air dribbles.
@@ragegaze3482 you are right but you are forgetting about boost management, you dont need that much boost to air dribble with 2/3 touches. The glue requires a lot more because you are carrying the ball the whole time. While I agree that 50/50 are most likely to go wrong, the potential and options are endless.

Using those lil animations for the arrows for “bump” or “flip reset” take SO long to create, and you only used them for a couple seconds. Mad respect, bro. That shit doesn’t go unnoticed 🔥
also really beneficial because if you just get a bit more speed and power in the setup as you become comfortable with it, it’s the same set up for hitting double taps
The biggest issue is properly getting a setup in a real game. I've found that often times it's best to consider the first touch off the wall being done for you. It's very rare that it just rolls up perfectly or you're allowed to set it up by opponents (or sometimes your own teammate). Most of the time your setup in a live match will be an awkward bounce up and off the wall. Stop lower than the ball, leave the wall, and fly out straight. Generally, that'll get you to that "second" touch if the ball is already away from the wall.
im gold and im so confused why people think the glue is better... the dribble looked so much more unpredictable and it looks like uve got so much more control over what you want to do
I would describe it as more like, control over the ball vs control over your options. The glue looks better and you can really put the ball where you want it if you have the skills for it, but the spaced out hard touches will be way less predictable
glue is safer and works better on multiple opponents. It looks more predictable because it is, but that doesn't mean it's easy to punish. if they half ass challenge you, you dunk it right through them, they need solid connection to defend it properly. And 2 touch air dribbling requires more space and time since you need the ball to seperate from your car multiple times, which invites early challenges. In a situation where there are more defenders than just 1, doing a glue air dribble is the safer and more effective option.
All diamonds can hit the ball off the wall and touch it into the net atleast once out of 20 tries. A decent bit of diamonds can hit the ball of the wall and "push" the ball in the net. Almost 0 diamonds can Air Dribble.
This is a really good video that makes these concepts accessible, and I just want to point out how sick it is that JohnnyBoi has been talking about this for ages while casting
as a high diamond who is just starting to learn more mechanics , I slow the game speed down to practice then gradully increace the speed. practicing the same thing but slower is a massive help
~5:20… taking a second, no boost. It makes the defender think youre done w the dribble. And then they slam it in. I can remember games where this has happened to me, def easier to make sure it wont again. Thanks for the video
This video idea was something that I've been thinking about for a while with air dribbles. I'm c2 and spam all types of wall/ground air dribbles in freeplay to where doing them in game is not hard if I can get control of the ball. I scored two air dribbles in game two days ago within 20 seconds and my tm8 said he can't air dribble consistently yet lol but I hate doing only air dribbles now so I'll incorportate flip resets and double taps after a touch or two in the air and they work well in game 👌🏾
I generally go up early and try to track the ball further from net to deal with someone using these... You can read the first or second touch before they get oriented. As only a D1 my best hope is to prevent my opponent from setting this up properly by applying a reasonable amount of pressure as soon as I see them go up the wall. I try to angle my car so I can boost laterally in any direction with my belly exposed and catch the ball more than striking it. It is surprisingly helpful on some players much better than me. Risky, but better than getting abused. YMMV because I have a very weird playstyle.
(Before watching the video) I think it's really effective because, compared to the glue, it's really unlinear, so it's way harder to read the trajectory then if you were to do the glue
I also thought the air dribble was better because if u glue it to your car it's basically predictable and easy to read where the balls going, but if the ball pings off the side of the front of ur car while air dribbling it's hard to predict where the balls going and can go to the top corner and harder to save
heres a video idea: How RW9 changed how to defend in 1v1 situations. Rather than double jumping for aerials, everyone now single jumps with flicking into the ball. And RW9 started it...
Rw9 didn't started it, he just perfected. Double jumping was a commitment that made it easier for ypur team comms. Saving flip makes it harder for your team cover net without comms.
mans legit teaches diamonds how to play and look like plats if i play with my dia friend his lobbies are people who cannot hit the ball or do stuff with style. in my opinion if u do like air dribble with air roll it makes you look like high level player but if u don't then u look like u just hit ur first air dribble ever.
The thing is it depends on the game mode, yes it’ll work in 1s but high level 2s is different. In 1600 and up you get prejumped no matter what, this mechanic will NOT work in high level 2s
I'm a hard stuck C1. Recently I started challenging smurfs very early when they go up the wall to start an air dribble. It's very effective. They are barely off the wall when I block, and they simply do not expect to be challenged so early at this rank.
theres no way you can prejump an air dribble so hard that they barely get off the wall, that's just called diving at the ball. They definitely aren't smurfs if they fall for that, because at that point they should just fake the air dribble and you will be flying across the map. If you mean when you are both on the side wall challenging the same rolling ball it's not as bad, but still susceptible to fakes. But if you are jumping from the ground preemptively, that is just a bad play.
@@ragegaze3482 it's not if you know your teammate will be back for cover. There's no point in both of us defending the goal line. If you go for the challenge early they sure might dodge you, but at least you've disrupted and your teammate will have a better chance of clearing.
@@ragegaze3482 they might not fall for it at their own rank, but on average nobody does this in C1. Also, it does not have to be a true smurf. There are plenty of mechanically gifted players in C1 that can be very deadly in the air. And I've been around C1/C2 for a long time, nowadays it's filled to the brim with GC titles
So... as a player since 2016(have a YT vid of one of the first BioHazard crate unlocks)... You're right!!!! Back in the day the glue was considered better because it was "more complicated" kind of like flicks were OP. Now it's bounce dribbles and dribbles and flip resets and being unpredictable WITH options.
when the ranks get higher players would start playing the ball more and play off reaction with the flip then just waiting for u too get your last touch
ye, flip resets are the only way to score air dribbles solo in higher ranked lobbies. in 2s and 3s that is, you can't just score vs 2 opponents with just an air dribble lol.

100% true, this is all risk and most likely won't work if there is 2 defenders. Glue lets you gurantee a 50/50 so you don't get out of position, that's why all high level players glue the ball.
Great vid. It’s interesting to me cause I do it all the time and consider it a fail cause I wanted something smoother. I’ll definitely try and master this.
The glue look cleaner visually, i have practice the glue in free play and training pack a lot, i was wrong. But in the same time, in game, the airdrbile with 2 or 3 touch is way easier for me compared to the glue
I stack at gold/plat for already a month... i got 3 days practice to finaly learn this mechanic ... not for 100% result shots, maybe about 1/3 .... But only in practice mode.. dk why still can't realize it in matchmaking =) also got 110 latency(( but i think it's not so bad at all... The reason of all this - i can't catch up the ball while match and start this mechanic... also no speed, no boost, no angle, enemy car bamping etc.... any advice how to avoid this? Thanks...
This video will come in so much clutch! I will use this much more often! Thanks Wayton!
Brilliant, I've never seen anyone put words to this...
And the irony is... most air dribble tutorials teach the 1st method.
Its funny.
The "uglier" air dribble is (usually) the better one.
SpookLuke: Practicing air dribbles is a waste of time
Chad Wayton: Let me cook
Spookluke didn't say that. he said that If you wanna get champ faster, you should focus only on game sense. but then you'll get hardstuck in champ until you start getting your mechs up.
@@NiceDZNintro idk how to tell you bro, he’s said it in multiple reels and videos, literally just watched the reel again🤣🤦♂️
It wasn’t glue you can see he stopped boosting to fake the opponent.
@@fp21OnXbox key word "try" it was an awful attempt at a fake and very easily readable but I'm only top #10,000 so I can exactly speak.
I do this so much in ssl and its just so op. They never know what u are going for so that just makes them have to guess or challenge really early
With "glue" you can still manage your boost to accelerate the air dribble when the opponent challenges. Both ways are viable in any rank.
even while accelerating the glue is very predictable
@@luismvg11 predictable yet still hard to defend
I’ve always genuinely adored the amount of patience and positivity you have when coaching, that especially shows in this video. Keep doing what you love, we’re all here to support you!
I miss you sometimes wayton, your content is actually so amazing and alot of times your channel is the main one i watch or come back to, I constantly re-watch your videos and the way you do documentaries and shit is just masterclass. I'm going to be honest i watch your videos to get my ingame confidence up because to me even though your only mid GC your one of the greatest and smartest players out there. I'm surprised your not SSL. Keep doing you man cause its working 😃
This is how I air dribble and it doesn’t usually work because the opp is up in the air stopping it as soon as I go up
Using those lil animations for the arrows for “bump” or “flip reset” take SO long to create, and you only used them for a couple seconds. Mad respect, bro. That shit doesn’t go unnoticed 🔥
This trick truly breaks my mind
SpookLuke: people below GC pls stop air dribbling
Wayton:
also really beneficial because if you just get a bit more speed and power in the setup as you become comfortable with it, it’s the same set up for hitting double taps
Did us dirty with that ad placement
That air dribble training video is how I learned how to air dribble just this year! Still working on it, but I'll try practicing the two-touch strat!
This is why that hard mechanics aren't always easy to score
Im not even gonna lie rn I love to watch Wayton because he is so chill and Good at teaching. I practice my air dribble with his map
I thought all diamonds could air dribble
Im diamond almost got champ and i still can't air dribble lol
All diamonds can hit the ball off the wall and touch it into the net atleast once out of 20 tries.
A decent bit of diamonds can hit the ball of the wall and "push" the ball in the net.
Almost 0 diamonds can Air Dribble.
@@HavocMusic1759 yeah
I'm champ, I can't air dribble at all, I can barely ground dribble. There are big differences in the mechanics of different players around that level.
fr in 2020-2021 i saw it at d3 all the time
This is a really good video that makes these concepts accessible, and I just want to point out how sick it is that JohnnyBoi has been talking about this for ages while casting
best rl youtube channel no cap
the visuals really make the video 🔥
as a high diamond who is just starting to learn more mechanics , I slow the game speed down to practice then gradully increace the speed. practicing the same thing but slower is a massive help
~5:20… taking a second, no boost. It makes the defender think youre done w the dribble. And then they slam it in.
I can remember games where this has happened to me, def easier to make sure it wont again. Thanks for the video
Thank you Wayton! . My diamond teammates are challenging early now.
the video just came out
just fake
Great video, it was a really good highlight of why air play (and flip resets) is now meta: The number of possibilities it gives you. Good work!
Dude the diamond player is so wholesome. The pure excitement in his voice when he finally did it.
Did the production quality of these videos is INSANE 🔥
I love your videos so much. Keep it up, I haven’t looked forward to someone posting in years. I appreciate you.
I also thought the air dribble was better because if u glue it to your car it's basically predictable and easy to read where the balls going, but if the ball pings off the side of the front of ur car while air dribbling it's hard to predict where the balls going and can go to the top corner and harder to save
I've used this for a long time since c1. The last touch is more unpredictable and can be really useful in a fake.
This can be brutal if mastered.
ive watched 3 minutes of the video and i cannot wait to watch the rest, as i know exactly why this type of airdribble is so deadly 💀
Great video WAYTON! Keep it up❤
heres a video idea: How RW9 changed how to defend in 1v1 situations.
Loved this video, great way of looking at addition by subtraction
bro is going to change the meta 100%
tried it got ceiling challenged into the shadow realm.
mans legit teaches diamonds how to play and look like plats if i play with my dia friend his lobbies are people who cannot hit the ball or do stuff with style. in my opinion if u do like air dribble with air roll it makes you look like high level player but if u don't then u look like u just hit ur first air dribble ever.
I do agree with this for the most part and you show why, but there are still some scenarios where the glue technique would be better.
Sounds more like a strategy than a mechanic of the game.
Ngl I use the heavy touch air dribble often
It’s oddly satisfying watching the ball go over the opponent as they try to predict where the ball goes
Just finished the video, awesome tip. Im opening RL right now to start practicing (gc2)
Love the content, you have inspired me to make RUclips videos. Much love ❤️ Wayton
Thanks Wayton for this amazing video ! 😄
This is all good and all until you realise that every lobby you get in has a ball chaser that just stops you doing anything.
The thing is it depends on the game mode, yes it’ll work in 1s but high level 2s is different. In 1600 and up you get prejumped no matter what, this mechanic will NOT work in high level 2s
also backboard defense easily owns this
As a diamond I do this a lot and I feel like it’s easier than the glue it also gives a better setup for other mechanics like flip resets and flicks
Great video! It really opened my eyes to how air dribbles work, I’m pushing c3 and I never thought about this. Thanks wayton
3:35 woah it's wuzy 😱😱
pros like vatira, zen, rw9 nwpo and similar caliber players have mastered this skill and thats why they are so effective at scoring from the air.
Guys, this mechanic is used in RLCS bro
because Acronik did this once in Worlds last year so it’s not really a big deal
So... as a player since 2016(have a YT vid of one of the first BioHazard crate unlocks)...
You're right!!!! Back in the day the glue was considered better because it was "more complicated" kind of like flicks were OP. Now it's bounce dribbles and dribbles and flip resets and being unpredictable WITH options.
Gonna start incorporating this into my games
This is legit. Excited to try
I've known this awhile. Ty for finally teaching this, so many people make this mistake
It’s crazy to me how much of a difference there is in terms of mechanical skill in diamond
when the ranks get higher players would start playing the ball more and play off reaction with the flip then just waiting for u too get your last touch
ye, flip resets are the only way to score air dribbles solo in higher ranked lobbies. in 2s and 3s that is, you can't just score vs 2 opponents with just an air dribble lol.
Great video man alot of good tips that little fake at the end is what im missing cant wait to get home and try this
RW9 is my hero and I believe I can stop this. Also, great video as usual
The pure joy of that diamond, hitting it for the first time was so wholesome.
Wayton don't change ANYTHING. your wok is amazing. keep up the good work. and pls train me im a gold 3 but i can air dribble and double tap and flip reset and ceiling shot
Every Mechanik is useful if consistent
The problem
If you do THIS and fail you leave your mate in a 2v1
So PLS my dia bros
PLS PLS dont air dribble
Learn some bounce dribbles and cuts first
It works even better AND you dont get insta scored on 😅
100% true, this is all risk and most likely won't work if there is 2 defenders. Glue lets you gurantee a 50/50 so you don't get out of position, that's why all high level players glue the ball.
Saturday morning in AZ, no work, overcast so less heat, fresh weed grinded, AND a new Wayton video? Maybe god hasn't abandoned us
Great vid. It’s interesting to me cause I do it all the time and consider it a fail cause I wanted something smoother. I’ll definitely try and master this.
I had a feeling it was gonna be this, because I remember watching musty play 2s or 1s until I lose and he just kept scoring like that
The glue look cleaner visually, i have practice the glue in free play and training pack a lot, i was wrong. But in the same time, in game, the airdrbile with 2 or 3 touch is way easier for me compared to the glue
Are ZEN & VATIRA the BEST DUO in EU?! (PRO SSL 2v2) 1:48 Zen used it.
Thanks... (And sorry for my bad English, it's not my native language)
This has help me soooo much i went from plat 2 div 2 to diamond 1 div 2
Funny thing about psyonix, they don’t give a fuck about people throwing or smurfing/boosting so fuck everyone that doesn’t actively promote THEIR game
Quick reminder to yall grinding to ssl that ssl's arent actually that mechanical in a normal game and that they just do simple stuff really well(and gl clipping on them)
ok bro
This mechanic is honestly so op
I thought the dribble is better because you have the freedom to go for bumps, flip resets, double touches or just dribble it in so its very hard to defend all at once compared to the glue, which is less versatile
ah ok perfect you explained that in the vid shouldve just watched lmao
I've conceded many times to this particular shot. It's always that extra last touch that messes you up.
Noe dont get him wrong, the glue is better in certain situations like going for 50s in the air, but the dribble is better for scoring goals.
This will be plats' and diamonds' favorite video of all time. Just air dribble to win.
