Our guest for the third episode of the Tracks Podcast hosted by Luke Kennedy is Tom Curren.
In the early 80s Tom Curren hit the scene as the Californian prodigy with the trademark double-pump bottom and the magnetic style.Between 1985 and 1990 Tom claimed three world titles. The 1990 title was famously won by surfing events all the way through from the trials stage. A record not even Kelly Slater will ever match.
After setting a new benchmark for pro surfing, Tom hung up the singlet and influenced surfing from an entirely different perspective. Roaming the globe as part of the Rip Curl Search he carved an indelible path as a free surfer - it was the same Tom Curren but there were new lines, different boards and better waves. Tom helped pave the way for a whole generation to choose the free surfing path.
We caught up with Tom while he was in Australia for the 25th anniversary of his cult classic film, searching for Tom Curren.

A note re Tom's classic instrumental album discussed at 48.30 - it's called Tom Curren's Ocean Surf Aces. I was the Producer and played some double bass, the other musicians weren't exactly "session musicians" as Tom recalls, but were pro musician friends from Western Australia's live music scene who knew how to improvise in an ensemble. Fantastic musicians. One was Taj Burrow's father Vance, who played amazing guitar. Taj was an extremely talented grom at the time (1992) and I recall a long mentoring discussion between Taj & Tom during the mixing.
The album was recorded live over 5 days in the cave amphitheatre on Ken Eichenberg's property at Injidup, Western Australia, overlooking the Injidup Carpark break. It was composed on the spot, via improvisation based off musical ideas Tom had been nurturing for a while - he's far more musically talented that he lets on (and a great guy to work with!)
The album has recently been remastered for online streaming and over 3 decades later it still sounds amazing. If all goes to plan (and Tom approves) we'll be re-releasing the remastered album in 2023 on most streaming platforms.

Soy monotone. I have studied surfing and skateboarding and done both for over 45 years since I was a boy. There is no best but as the years go by I am realizing more and more every year how truly amazing Tom Curren is. Amazing approach and surfing. Great interview from The Master himself

He's definitely like this in every interview - he's known for being uneasy talking about himself. I believe Tom has social anxiety and expresses himself better through creativity. Ask him a bunch of questions, he gets stuck in his head. Give him a surfboard or guitar, see him in his element.

so true about local underground rippers ...
grew up in florida, and there were LOTS. Only a few went pro, but so many that were at that level, or real close.
    Kelly won everything though (everything).
there were quite a few that just blew off the thought of competition (pretty sure Justin was one of those - saw him destroy Wabasso one time - if you know how shallow it is there, then you know that means something - had no fear)
I understand the career side, for sure. But many in our area just were like "no way, not into the competition".
One of the earliest standout moments I remember from tom is 1983 Op Pro in relatively small waves.
It was the set wave, so big enough, and he just *nailed* the lip climb maneuver (one of the hardest maneuvers), hitting it near the bottom.
there wasn't ANYONE doing that at the time... Not sure if I've seen that maneuver executed that good since (though kelly has had a lot of sick backhand ones)
    ruclips.net/video/FA12kOhkuwg/видео.html ( - 40 min and 20 sec into that video)
I loved those old OP pro contests, especially the Miss Op swimsuit model competitions. "don't fall in looooovvvve" (try telling that to a 12 year old)

Great questions! Hard to get Tom to open up about much and these are questions I’ve had too! And none of these questions overlapped with his most recent interviews!
    Great job!

Luke it would be great if you asked open questions instead of closed ones. Tom is such an interesting person, extremely intelligent and articulate but closed questions gets closed answers.
Hopefully you can appreciate the position you are in a d the access you have to some great personalities in surfing and try to explore some of the depth or underlying meanings to their stories.
