    • @NJ-wb1cz
      @NJ-wb1cz Год назад +87

      Yep. Crypto was the first to plummet at the slightest hint of an economic instability, and is _entirely_ dependent on the miners on the other side of the world constantly running their computers and deciding not to screw with everyone else and to not steal all their crypto.

    • @NJ-wb1cz

      They conveniently omit that they can use crypto because a bunch of crypto fat cats _allow_ them to. The only compensation they would be looking to accept at that point are hard assets or reciprocal services - food, water, medicines, gasoline, weapons, land, seeds to grow crops or animals to raise and eat, clothing, tools, lumber, etc…. No one with an actual service or good to trade in that environment is going to trade it for a made up fabricated intangible asset with no real hard asset value like a Bitcoin. If you got a shop and you don't want to pay ridiculous fees to visa, then you got an alternative in crypto (with less fees). Again you don't have to use it. It's voluntary.

      Yeah I am the same. Doomsday scenarios are not a worthwhile reason to have interest in crypto, but rather its ability to decentralize power and create trust in strangers. Which does make it quite useful to criminals, and in practice this is only productively useful to people escaping authoritarian regimes or against currencies that are more volatile than crypto. Ideally those situations would be resolved in their governments, which means there is some room for crypto in the meantime. That and the political questions it asks regarding libertarianism, ie the value in creating currency with limited value that by definition will not scale (for Bitcoin). Or the identity questions it asks regarding blockchain and verification. Some dystopian stuff, which isn't relevant today. All that said, nobody should be investing in crypto without understanding the extreme risks in it and that it is a space rife with criminals & scams, it requires quite a bit of computer literacy. I would liken investing in it as a high-risk financial technology, with no safeguards, most people would be much better served by investing in traditional markets.

    • @rcg9573

      Yeah, but it is not even tied to investments in state sponsored currency. It is tied to imaginary random strings of digits that some guys convinced a lot of fools that it represents a real currency. It's even worse than gold because at least gold has intrinsic value. It can be used for jewelry (very popular), it can be used in certain electronics (very popular in those electronic applications where it makes sense). Bitcoin is literally a number string that has no more value than if I were to take out a piece of paper , write down a string of numbers on it, and claim that number has a meaningful value that can be analyzed, forecast, assessed, valued, etc... Neither has any true value. It is literally a complete scam created and supported by those big players who are now holding loads of it and by the companies manufacturing and selling the computer equipment to "mine" for these worthless number strings. And while there are certainly investments in the stock market that resemble a casino, the things that say a guy like Warren Buffet invests in are no such thing. You can actually value the companies he invests in, you can assess their products or services, their cash flows, their real assets, liabilities and equity, etc... Bitcoin firms provide no such thing because there is literally no way to actually value stuff that is worthless other than calling it worthless. I have yet to this day hear a single Bitcoin promoter be able to explain in logical terms how any bitcoin firm is truly to be valued other than "well that's what its price is at in the stock market." Well, that supposed pricing is no more real than the late 1980's and early 1990's pricing on junk bonds. Yes, they had a price, and those prices were not based upon any real logical basis and they turned out to be completely invalid prices. Pretty much what happens with any "Tulipmania" hyped intangible farcical "claimed asset" like Bitcoin.

He clearly didn't pay attention to what happened in regards to their crypto (was kind of ground breaking). The Canadian government, while using the Emergency Measures Act, developed a legal process to seize the convoys crypto and block further transactions. The convoy did manage to empty 70% of the wallet, while the process took place, but lost 30%. I doubt that the government would be that slow in the future, if they were to do again. • @xryz

      Ill preface that im a proponent of crypto tech. I see it as the future of the web. Where we all control our own data the services are on our local machines and the data is on the distributed chain. Larger compute intensive services can be federated where a group of users pool their hardware resources to run it and of additional resources needs they can rent server time from a data center or another federated group that has free resources.
      I see crypto tech as a way to have transparency, accountability, security, and a way to rout out corruption. With a public ledger everyone has access to the data. Data that should be private can be encrypted and only accessible to the specific parties. Voting can be instant, private, and secure. Legal documents can be developed through a git repository process and saved to the chain. You see who made what changes, when, and who signed off on changes.
      NFTs in the form of art was stupid. I see nfts as access tokens. Its your key for voting, its your house deed, its your driver’s license, birth certificate, passport, etc. legal documents that should only have one copy and stored somewhere secure.
      Recovery of lost or stolen wallets is one of the biggest challenges with crypto. If you loss your recovery phrase you are screwed and without some central authority to trust to recreate your assets the challenge is pretty difficult.
      That may have happened but thats why you keep the bulk in a cold wallet and only put what you are willing to lose on cloud wallets. Having your crypto in the cloud via exchanges kinda defeats the purpose of crypto. Centralization of a decentralized network is dumb and is the cheap solution trying to solve slow networks and gas fees. With the central exchanges you can basically transfer fee free within their networks but if you are going to a wallet outside it then you have to pay the standard fees. Also it’s convenient because it’s basically having a crypto debit card instead of a checkbook.
      It doesn’t need to be solved that way but cryptobro libertarians are dumb and only see money and not paying taxes as the utility.
      Sent an IM to the show and hoped they read but dont think they did.

      Plus there are more problems. You just mentioned the inability to acess your belongings when you lost your password. Another one is you have no way of persecuting someone that was able to steal your belongings. I think movies have sort of caused some brain rot for people. Before motion pictures, fewer people had access to the type of fantastical, dramatic scenarios where they're able to overcome governments to survive. Most people wouldn't imagine these things based on their daily lives or even news, books, etc. Once you see events projected for you, it's easier to create these narratives. It also seems to be why some many people think movies and video games create violence rather than reflect it. If you see (even fake) things happen, it's easier to imagine them happening to you.
