a super rare *shels reaction video emerges... I never thought this day would come...
This album made me cry. Dunno why
me too, I made it part of my skin
Hadn't heard this band before but damn this is a great song. I'm going to listen to the whole album now.
I think this song would have fit better in post-metal week but either way I'm so glad you did a video on *shels, such an underrated band. You also picked the perfect introduction to them haha. They're one of those bands that skirts the line between post-rock and post-metal.
Looks like I might have to suggest the bands Devil Sold His Soul and Mahumodo, they both share memebers with *shels and are a good representation of post-hardcore. Specific song requests:
Devil Sold His Soul - Drowning/Sinking
Mahumodo - Aprils
posthardcore too. they were Mahumodo.
One of my favorite post-rock songs ever. Every time you smiled, I did too. It's all in the little details and layers.
Man you have the best reaction catalog on RUclips :)
*Shels are awesome man. Been a fan for years.
Found these guys a few years ago and absolutely adore them, glad you got to experience this too!
This whole album is great. One of my favorite Post-Rock albums 'Star Showers on the Euphrates' by the band *Ancients & one of my favorite Hardcore/Beatdown albums 'Buster' by Admiral Angry are also on the same record label. Good stuff all around~
Also Frère Jacques is French, "Friar Jaques" :P
When I first heard TOOL in 1992 I had the exact same look on my face.
I didn't know this band before now. But I like this a lot!
Skyline - Earthside. That song has a similar off-beat thing that ends in unity. Its also one of my favourite instrumentals of all time
Conqueror or Searching for Zihuatanejo would have been great shouts from this album as well
oh how i wish this week included Red Sparowes. why don't i have a direct pipeline to your brain
Stumbled upon your fade in/fade out video.. Dang!
Ya need to watch poets of the fall. ANY of them. Best group ever :D
keep up the good work, the good video's, and remember. Were all in this togeather.
Great song, great album.
You were pretty close for you pronunciation of Frère Jacques. (original language is French)
And your channel remains the one with the most interesting commentaries and music I've seen on YT. Some even went to my regular playlists!
Oh my God !!! I just found a must. Clowncore is a band that for whatever reason popped up in my recommendation feed.
I know I've been absent for the last month but I saw this and instantly thought of you Bryan.
For the next post rock reaction i recommend sigur ros and their song svefn-g-englar
FUCK YES!!! Bro i recommend Eleventh Vibration - Meridian
*shels are outstanding...go a little further back and you'll find Mahumado, Blueneck, etc...
Checkout be'lakor - Abeyance, i would say its one of the best metal songs i've ever listend to, it has really great transitions in mood and riffs
This is definitely my favorite of both post weeks so far. While it occasionally lost me, notably around 7 minutes in, I enjoyed it for the most part.
The ramblings were great for this one.
Haha I'm glad you enjoyed. I was very scatter-brained this time around 😅
Also I'm pretty sure the band name is just pronounced "shels" and the * is silent. And if you revisit them, I'd suggest the songs Water or The White Umbrella.
Never heard of this band before and it was really good, some parts kinda reminded me of "We Made God" also a post rock/metal band you should check them out!
I'm back with my spam... Check out Night Verses! Hahaha :)
This sounds like an interesting middle-ground between post-rock and post-metal, maybe leaning slightly towards the later. Like most post-music I really dug the atmosphere on this, but I think this did more than most to introduce different textures, like the beautiful acoustic intro, and the lead guitar over the distorted riff around the 6:30 mark. I also heard some echoey, chorus vocal effect during that section, which reminded me a lot of Alcest. Quite beautiful either way. Definitely interested to hear more from them. Funnily enough, I think the band name is just pronounced "Shels," but I actually like "StarShels" better. :D
RE "rounds," I'm reminded of Soft Kitty from Big Bang Theory (the round starts at 2:00. Whole scene is pretty funny though if you know the characters): ruclips.net/video/K-Z5wQHGn5g/видео.html
Also: Ostinato is any continuous musical phrase/rhythm, typically in the bass and most common in older classical. One awesome example is the final movement of Brahms's 4th symphony where the ostinato is worked into a very elaborate passacaglia that occurs over several thematic variations.
That's what an Ostinato is! And the name I was looking for was staccato, which definitely has a similar vibe to ostinato so I understand how my brain landed on the latter rather than the former. I'm still a bit upset I couldn't remember such a standard articulation though.
Please check out Turkish post-rock band Katre.
Katre-Underwater World reaction would be amazing.
Pain of Salvation, dude. King of Loss, A Trace of Blood, whatever. Just do it. (Whatever is not a song, hehe)
He did the Perfect element.
@@Sayajin3321 not enough. Never enough
I think I'm just too simple-minded in my musical preferences for "post" music because I still lose interest after around 4 minutes. I do think I'm going to turn your "BOM, boo-doo-dee-doo-dee-dee-doo-doo" into my ringtone though.
If you do you gotta let me know how it goes!
I wouldn't say it's "simple minded." Some people just appreciate textures in music more than others. There's no right or wrong. You have to listen for the subtle changes.
Lots of great moments, but overall not my cup of tea.
awesome :) and yeeaah it is pronounced "shels" the * came about when writing songs and sorting through riffs/ demos so they would be easy to sort / find in itunes :) check out "Conference of the Birds" "Return To Gulu" or "The Killing Tent" too
