- The late Harold C Schonberg wrote of Percy Grainger (The Great Pianists), "Grainger was one of the most gifted pianists of the century, and his credentials were impeccable: student of Louis Pabst, James Kwast, and Ferruccio Busoni: friend of Grieg, exponent of modern music (Debussy, Delius, Albeniz) at the turn of the century. He had a free, easy swing at the piano, a superb tone, and an effortless , completely natural technique.----He was one of the keyboard originals."
This 1925 performance is the first recording of Chopin's Piano Sonata No 3 Op 58.. John Bird, Grainger's biographer writes, ": This performance has stood the test of time and is the recording to which connoisseurs always turn when Grainger's greatness as a pianist is discussed. It is played with a ferocity and wild abandon that at times is frightening." - Видеоклипы
The whole performance is miraculous but no one and i mean no one negotiates the last movement with such rhythmic intensity as Grainger does here and the effect is over-whelming. When i listen to it it sounds as if Percy is going to burst a blood vessel. Simply one of the greatest recordings in pianistic history. TY!
Thank you for your comment. I am glad that Granger is finally receiving the deserved recognition of being a significant pianist.
This musician rarely gets the recognition he should in Australia.Perhaps it is because left Australia just before 13 years of age to study overseas and then went to live in the UK and late the USA.He is possibly best remembered in Melbourne , where he helped create is own excellent museum in the University Grounds,close to the city and where he was born.He also has strong associations with Adelaide where he is buried.Let's hope as time goes by,we hear more of his compositions here.
The first and in my opinion one of the greatest recordings of this wonderful work. The last movement is unique in its intensity and rhythmic drive, all achieved without the over-pedalling which ruins many modern performances, yet managing to preserve Chopin's lyricism. We should be listening to more of these great pianists of the past and learning from them.
Absolutely Wonderful !. A Masterpiece. There Are No Words To describe This Incredible Performance.

goose-bumps @ 2:23
@briandonohue100 brilliantly stated.
the fact this incredible recording has only managed 576 views in one year is criminal and a sad commentary on the state of pianism today.
I finally did and am very glad for same. Been wanting to get the Grainger complete on APR, but it's no longer listed in their catalog and insane prices for it are posted on Amazon. The second movement is one of the most sublime utterances of the 19th century, and Grainger does it wonderful justice.
Superb TY Beckmesser2 for sharung
Jesus fucking Christ, first and best recording of this piece
This superb recording joins my other favorites: Lipatti, Horszowski, Gulda, and Heinrich Neuhaus. Unfortunately, he makes a 16 measure cut in the third movement.
