He was a master arranger and his voicing was superb. Very difficult to play well. His scores leave zero doubt about the effects he was expecting. So nice to have this recording to listen to! I love playing this piece.

His rubatos are out of this world. He sings so well the little vocal nuances of the irish melodies

If one's only acquaintance with this piece were this recording, one would never know that the piece was difficult. I am learning this, and the demands for clear voice leading are heavy, but Grainger makes it all sound so easy.

Yes, bringing out the inner voices (so carefully marked by Grainger in the score), is excellent exercise! Not to speak of the 10th-spreads and the 2 octave jumps in the left hand. It's not beyond an intermediate student though (that was me ;-)

Yes, indeed. EVERY piano student should have to practise this piece; then they'd know about voicing chords!

Jane Ross of Limavady, Co. Derry, heard a street musician play this and wrote it down. Weatherly put words to it and the rest is history! The melody is very ancient. Grainger was a friend of Delius. Who could forget that Ken Russell film.

Everyone who wants to play this piece should take a lesson in voicing from Grainger. He clearly delineates the melodic line and counter melodies that are so clearly marked in the score. This is wonderful.

Everyone here realizes he didn't compose this, he arranged it. Good arrangement!

Most people tackle this before they're ready. Great hand/finger strength is required to voice this correctly and consistently, especially at softer levels. Richter was a master at voicing, and had larger strong hands, however today, finger/hand strength is left as an after thought. Who's the pianist here? I've heard a mediocre version before by the composer himself...different than this one if it is in fact Grainger playing.

You must have heard the piano roll version by the composer.
