  • A 1st person dungeon crawler that feels like Disgaea meets witch and the hundred knight?
    That's what the designers set out to create, and without a doubt they pulled it off.
    But now that they pulled it off, was it an idea worth pursuing?
    ..yeah. It was.

    Except for a few frustrating moments, including the post-game final boss, I've spent around a hundred hours with this game and I had an absolute blast. It's a very nice crawler and a very good NIS story with fantastic VO as usual.

    Easily the best and most in depth review of this game. I actually haven't played Refrain, but I've been putting a lot of hours into Galleria and it has the same mechanics. Just want to say that the sequel seems to have cleaned up a ton of the issues you had with the first. The only thing is they still don't explain everything as well as one would like.

    This really one of unique game... Definetly good review.
    After finishing this game, even with true ending, i still have question for how many thing works.
    What i lke most, what can boss do to you, you can do it too to the boss. Like give ailment to boss, or even do gore hit too them with absolute
    And, there is certainly way to cheese some boss. Even the final boss, you can make it less painfull, with a skill from a coven. there are some very specific skill that can be used to:
    - kill them instantly
    - make it easier to handle (even the final boss and final post game boss)
    But some of this skill also needed for basic stuff like to even damaging them (the bah bah pact)
    Some thing you forgot to mention is about equip syntesis.
    You can combine many equip to strenghen one and since its absorb the equip stats, including ailmentinducing one,
    With great build, and syntetic equip, you can steamroll many of the bosses as well

    But this video made me remember that hearing an explanation of a NIS game can be sometimes overwhelming.
    And I remember that I have other games that I want to play... and this game would take a looot of time to finish it.
    Cool and detailed video by the way.

    • @panagiotislepelis8177
      @panagiotislepelis8177 5 лет назад +1

      I mean when you actually play those games you gradually get into the mechanics and adjust. Chances are you can easily finish the game by winging it (if youve played games with lots of mechanics before). Usually by the end of the first playthrough you have a good grasp of the mechanics, combinations and realise how much easier the game would be if you knew what you were doing from the beginning, which usually leads to your second playthrough on harder difficulty trying to min max or find that one super op combo.
      But yeah being frontloaded with all that info from the beginning is kinda overwhelming for most people. I personally enjoy it cause i can already discern some stuff that will save me a lot of mistakes early. That being said i think NIS games do a good job of explaining a lot of basic mechanics but also hinting at some more obscure ones without spoiling them so it shouldnt be too hard getting into it. It seems bring a tad more rpg feel to the classic dungeon crawler and the mechanics seem interesting rather than just tedious for no reason. That combined with NIS story, this seems like its gonna be one of those game youre skeptical when you go in but very glad you gave it a chance once youve finished it.

    First of all, thank you for an in-depth review. This is one of the best videos I've found online.
    Second, you need to play Dungeon Travelers 2.
    Third, how much did you have to grind? In DT2, it's an unspoken rule that you should be at least the same level as the enemies. You have to level +5 if you want to have more peace of mind (but this is no way a guarantee of safety as your party can still get wiped.)
    Lastly, YOU NEED TO PLAY DUNGEON TRAVELERS 2!!

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  5 лет назад +3

      I've played Dungeon Travelers 2 haha. Not a bad game by any means, but I won't lie I did find it TOO grind heavy for my tastes. The tedium killed a lot of it for me, as did the 1-way doors and stuff, but the art saved it in many regards haha. My version of the game even came with a mini calendar with a lot of the games art in it. Love having it around.
      As per the need to grind, I didn't have to do too much. The game has this cool system where you can stockpile exp. At the end of every battle you spend 1 reinforcement point to stockpile the EXP. The more you do this the more you build an EXP multiplier. After around 20 battles you hit the multiplier cap of x2.99. It really helps level you up when you can get nearly 3x the experience you're supposed to. The catch is that you don't keep any experience while you stockpile, and if you get gameover or leave the dungeon without cashing in your stockpile you lose it all and all your time building it goes to waste.

      Its has grinding. But its not really that painful. Its system are not far from disgaea, being evilities are skill, and transfer soul being reincarnation. And you good to go by only 1-3 reincarnation. But it can really cheese the leveling too
      But the system is way more complex than disgaea.

    I am very late with this but I beat this today and really enjoyed it, It drove me mad sometimes but I loved all the depth to party creation and customization. Voice acting, characters and story was really cool too I thought, Though it veered into child abuse territory where with poor luca at points that was hard to watch :( I thought that UI and menus needed a lot of work though, for all the equipping and swapping and changing you do it was a very messy affair. Why is the stats of armor spread over 3 to 4 different pages? Makes it very awkward comparing stats. Anyway, great in depth review man. :)

      So I just turned on my switch to check. On ps4, in the options menu you can chose to enable/disable touchpad shortcuts. On the switch where that option would be has been left blank with no substitute. It's always possible they can patch it in though.
      That said, there's shortcuts for most menus anyway by pushing "R+D-pad direction," it's just a little more cumbersome and hard to use because the R-button is also mapped to your field skills as "R+A/B/X/or Y." I had a tough time adjusting to using R for 8 different shortcuts but it's not like it can't be done.

    If you're wondering if this game is for you I have a helpful tip: It's exactly like the original Final Fantasy games. It's basically Final Fantasy 1 meets Disgaea. And like all NIS (and perhaps all Japanese) games, it's geared to appeal to horny men, so keep that in mind if it matters to you.
    You have different classes of characters, you create a custom team of them which starts below the max # members, you walk them around the world engaging in random encounters, battle is turn based, you upgrade with equipment found in chests or won from battles, you grind in easier areas to get through harder ones . . . it's exactly like Final Fantasy 1-3 but with some unique nomenclature and other conceptual tweaks.

      The game is good before the 40 hour mark, but it becomes great after it. Similar to how Xenoblade 2 worked. That game didn't become great until 30 hours in. Prior to that it's just alright. Some RPGs take a long time to set up everything they need to have an impactful final arc, but it's usually worth it.

    Labyrinth of Refrain plays exactly and I mean exactly like how you would think a mobile game JRPG gacha game would play if got out mobile skinnerbox club and made a real game. Where enemy grunts are laughably easy comically even. But lord helps if you ask to speak to their manager, and put you under 6ft down. I also say this because of how interesting the games healing system work but really not needing to do so. Beating enemies and grunts afterwards at the xp, and loot screen as long as you don't hold XP for multiplier your team gets healed a sizeable chunk. Kinda nulling needing a dedicated potion with legs, and the game putting a lot of emphasizes on damage bursting.
    Besides the tedious of switching out gear their is some nice quality of life of not having to total manage everything

      I don't personally because I have a hard-on for horror in general, but a friend I saw had reviewed the japanese launches of both games and they edged it out just above MS. They gave this game a 9 where they gave MS an 8.6.
      While this game is more mechanically in-depth I think the lighter approach of MS and the world designs just work better. That said this game probably has the more rewarding dynamics between the main characters, so it probably depends on what you're looking for more.

    Oh boy, that certainly sounds like NIS's approach to gameplay design... I'm not sure whether I really enjoy what they make anymore these days - I feel like the complexity of their ludicrous number crunch design hit its sweet spot around the time of Disgaea 2 and ever since, it has mostly been complexity for complexity's sake and really overwhelming/annoying for me.
    That said, everything else about this game looks fantastic to me.
    Ever since the Etrian Odyssey series' switch to the 3DS I've been craving a good DRPG that evolves the 2D portrait style of old without resorting to 3D models instead (though I will say that EO pulled that visual change off quite well) and this does exactly that.

    Hope you don't mind a question. But I have had my eye on this game for a few months now and as the official release date is just a week away I'm not so sure I want the game anymore. So mind if I ask if you felt the insane coven mechanics at all felt like it ruined the game? I know you said in the video that "it's a battlefield of its own", but did you ever felt when a coven you put time in failed that it maybe frustrated you that you'd have to spend hours to grind a new coven just to try a boss again?

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  5 лет назад +2

      Towards the end I felt it got a bit overwhelming. Most of the game you can get by with just about any arrangement of covens and so I never felt the need to improve what I was already using. Despite not feeling the need to at the time though, I should have done it anyway as it's only logical.
      Had I realized sooner how valuable good covens would be towards the end I would have started using them as I acquired them, to level them up and lower their reinforcement cost. So while I did definitely feel some frustration in the very-late game stages it's kind of my own fault for not affording certain things the attention I probably should have.

    • @hackerkyle7387
      @hackerkyle7387 5 лет назад

      @@TarksGauntlet so what you're saying is if a coven looks to be of use, but say the cost to use it is a bit high, it is worth using it as it'll pay off in the late game?

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  5 лет назад

      Yeah. The more you use a coven the cheaper it becomes to use. If you can use really good covens and keep most of your reinforcement points then you can use your left over reinforcement points to boost your attack and defense power during battles. Those boosts can go a long way.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  5 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't worry too much about classes. You'll have 6 puppets in no time which means you can have at least 1 of each class in your party almost immediately.
      That said, when I was given a review code for the game NISA actually sent a review guide PDF full of "Helpful" hints for new players. I didn't look at it until I actually beat the game and set out to put my review together so it's not like it's necessary to follow their hints, but I'm gonna copy and paste a couple of their hints here. Sorry if this ends up looking like an essay:
      "Pay close attention to the options when creating a character. These options affect their initial strength and how they will grow over the course of the game. Preferred Stat Growth influences whether your character grows as a specialist or as a jack-of-all-trades.
      For offensive characters, use Moon stance. For tank characters (a.k.a. Peer Fortress), use Sun stance for the defense boost and taunting.
      Skill Selection allows you to pick ANY of a class’s skills to give your character upon creation.
      This includes their late level/ultimate skills.
      ◆With regard to Skill Selection, some of the best skills to have a character take are:
      Aster Knight: Armor-Piercing
      Shinobushi: Sword Master (Improves Dual Wielding)
      Theatrical Star: Anti-Donum Heresy
      Marginal Maze: Eclipse
      Peer Fortress: Unbreakable (AWESOME flat buff to guard)
      Mad Raptor: Crossbow Salvo (NO CONTEST)
      ◆The Bell and Scythe type weapons can attack whole groups of enemies instead of a single target. This makes Theatrical Star characters especially useful at the start of the game.
      Marginal Maze characters require a lot of donum, which is not abundant at the start of the game. This makes Marginal Maze characters useful later in the game."
      Hopefully that helps. The PDF is 15 pages. 3 pages are early-game hints. This was page 1, and the one I'd argue is most useful.

    Great review. Personally I love this game and near the first end.
    There are a couple points you missed that may help others understand some of the bosses.
    The game has 6 dungeons that hold "secret" bosses that are needed to be defeated to get to the post game for the true ending. These bosses are sometimes hard to find and are very hard and meant to be handled LATE game.
    A couple of the bosses uncluding the last boss require special covens that have special made donum to open then up. Secret bosses and different tasks will unlock these. For instance Jouon boss requires a Bah-Bah pact which then lets her be hit. In essence there is a bit of a puzzle to beating them.
    Also to help with grinding if you have more mana than an area allows you get a chance for a Grim Reaper (escape these) or two very week but highly ex profitable opponents. They drop a high ex coven. One hold 4 characters and the other 6. The High EXP Pact G gives all attackers 360% exp and support 240% exp (or around those numbers.) Mix that with the ability to stockpile exp for 1 reinforcement point with an exp multiplier up to x2.99 exp you cab easily get a freshly transfered soul to level 40 or 50 in less than 30 mins, as exiting the dungeon will also give every puppet in and out if the brigade an extra 20% of the toyal earned in the dungeon.
    Here is a really good source someone made for the game which has helped me immensely: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQ4x0Qsfo_VX5DL6FiCI0l8USCZqYbUfjti7_9sYA_LLjSZhmlDvbbu9zTXUDq13QOniTWPQBBmB7dS/pubhtml#
    Labrynth of Refrain is a phenomenal game IMO and I cant recomend it enough for those that like creativity in their RPGs and depth!

    ei Tarks, answer me something. Nowadays we see console jrpgs absorbing influences from MMO and mobile games( both in gameplay and presentation). I see this in this game and in xenoblade chronicles, where, for example, the battle system is not exactely turn based or real action. Do you feel this is the way to go?

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  5 лет назад

      Broad question haha. I absolutely love Xenoblade chronicles. One of my favorite JRPG's of the last 10 years. That said, designs like this certainly won't work in everything. Mobile game presentation is typically a big no for me, but MMO mechanics can be used well.

      @goncaloferreira6429 5 лет назад

      the presentation makes me cringe. whenever i see gameplay like this i always think there is too much on screen. A sort of overdose, something that is digestable if you are playing for 10 minutes while commuting but doesnt feel right when playing an rpg for several hours.
      I would also say that its hard for younger players to go from this to older, much simpler rpgs. Not only they have to face the "bad" graphics" but the games will feel empty and basic.

      It's nothing insane really. Just a few rather revealing outfits. Most of them are on your puppets and you can choose to use other outfits if you want, but there are a few bosses here and there that show enough to warrant the warning for people who are sensitive to that sort of thing. Just enough to get the M rating I think.

      KGhaleon well let me ask this. How much freedom do you actually have in your party creation? Can I make a healer class look at their skills and say "you know what, I'm gunna make this guy focus on dealing paralysis, and blind most of the time while making their cure capabilities a secondary thing."
      Or say I see a tank class and notice it has a lot of offensive skills that could potentially make them a power house. Could I build them in that way? Or are the healers only gunna learn healing skills and that's it. And a tank is just a tank. I know in Etrian odyssey you don't make a class do the secondary thing as the main thing often. But the fact it's an option and you can do some crazy and fun things like that is why I love Etrian odyssey. It's not just the dungeon crawling and drawing your own map is nice, but it's not the main appeal for me either. It's the class freedom. And from what I seen so far. Just like all of NIS's other games. It's all about making it as complex as possible. And while I like it with disgaea, It's kind of a major turn off in this style of game for me. The demo is there but I'm not sure I want to try it right now.

    • @KGhaleon
      @KGhaleon 5 лет назад

      There's a wide range of classes from tanks to high damage attackers to magic DMP classes. The skills or magic that you can use depends on the coven you select(and can change anytime). I have a couple of tanks in my party that start battles by aggroing enemies, then I have ninjas and knights that deal big damage, a healer that also buffs, and then I've got my magic spell casters in the far back. I can set various formations and you get bonuses depending on your layout.

The endgame is challenging but like the reviewer says, switching to easy mode does not punish you. A good idea is to make characters from walkthrough videos.
