So, the metal wire is so that you can get/ maintain a solid shape in what you want to create. By securing the tubing to the metal wire it helps the tubing keep a shape as well. The metal is glued or fastened behind the tubing with just the lights running through. You can order the amazon lights in the description in different lengths, but one standard width. And yes, so you run the lights through the tube is how you get the "fat" neon sign appearance.
