This is some impressive gameplay and graphical quality! You say this is all recorded on real hardware, and yet it looks like it's done on an emulator! What sorta hardware are you using? I've got a Framemeister XRGB Mini myself, and I think I have some dodgy cables, since my PS2 can show some pretty clear images with 2D games, but the SNES gets some rather subtle blur that doesn't make it as sharp as I'd like. I'm currently using a SCART cable, but I hear there's special makes that can get better quality out of the ageing consoles. What would you recommend for recording purposes?
***** I can assure you this was not done on an emulator, none of my videos use emulators. My setup: SNES 1-chip-02 revision, RGB scart into XRGB mini (upscaled to 720p) then captured using El Gato HD capture. Might be your cable or your Framemeister settings (take a look at this: junkerhq.net/xrgb/index.php/XRGB-mini_FRAMEMEISTER, check out the 240p settings).
I've just checked with my PS2 recording Rayman - I'm pretty sure it's either the Scart cable or the SNES, cause the video quality was clear as a bell on the PS2. There's a pretty noticeable hiss with the SNES's audio, and the graphics are definitely blurrier than the PS2's output (which, granted, is on Component). I'll see if a new cable does the trick. Thanks for the advice!
This looks great for an early NES game. My favourite part is the awesome weapon sound effects. Truly Phalanx has Thunderforce and Axelay crapping in their dungarees.
Man I wish I could tell you. I have no idea how I ended up in that secret area. The secret areas in this game, and there are many of them, still appear to be undocumented after all these years.
So this is a comment to the original player, and to you. So if you want to try digging around with the code of the game and if you want to like fiddle around with something like game Replay code so you constantly have a mega Crush, you'll note that every single interactable Secret will take damage on a mega Crush, but is explicitly not an enemy. I assume it's because they program these things as an enemy, but instead of dealing damage, it just triggers a stage shift. It's entirely likely that he may have seen something take damage and noted that was a secret spot.
this is actually the only other cool shump ive yet to see on the snes other than the masterful gradius 3... personally i would play phalanx in an emulator with reduced speed though
Heh, played this on the GBA version, which is maybe slightly less impressive. They changed it up a bit. Cool to see the original SNES version. You didn't have a ''funny'' difficulty on the GBA version, but it was still not that easy on hard. Still have my finished campaign save file on the cardridge haha.
Though a port from the X68000, I feel the SNES had a damned fine version of this game. While the boxart was odd, the game inside was not. Not the flashiest game in the world, but it doesnt have to be, just a solid shmup.
Regardless if the game's good or not, they sure had a struck of genius on the marketing, some old guy playing a banjo ends up saving the world kindda sounds weird even in an old video game...
At least the GBA version had sound effects for the projectiles being fired. It feels odd that you're firing all these lasers and missiles and stuff and not a single one of them is making any noise except when they're blowing something up. Did the developers fire their sound engineer or something?
@@Bauglir100 I prefer it the way this game presented it because with all the projectiles being fired, from both enemy and player, it would become excessive. Also, when the enemy projectiles have sounds, which does occur a few times, it makes it more intense due to the lack of it being there all the time. Same goes for the E power up that charges, it makes a sound when it is fully charged and shot. Also for all the special moves for each powerup, they have associated sound(s) which makes them stand out as being more wow and is a pretty cool decision. Lastly, dat soundtrack doe man, it's stuck with me since I played it in the early 90's. You would hear less of it and that, imo, would have been a travesty.
@@Arycke No, the lack of sound effects takes me out of the game. It makes the game seem unfinished, like they didn't have time to program all the audio. I want the satisfaction of listening to my lasers and missiles being fired from my cannons and turrets as I shoot my enemies full of holes. Imagine if Doom didn’t have any sound effects for the guns and missiles being fired. Or GoldenEye 007. Or Half-Life. The GBA port did it right by putting them in. If a game had to make me choose between music and sound effects (looking at you, Zool and Zool 2!), I'll definitely pick the sound effects every time. If I want to listen to the music, I'll just find a RUclips video of the soundtrack.

***** Yeah I've looked at some of your vids for the x68000 version, it looks and sounds a lot better than the SNES version. Still I think they did a pretty good job porting the game to the SNES all things considered.
there is no way in hell he didn't use save states through emulation... and he likely slowed down the speed while playing, then readjusted it before posting this video... it is not possible to react that fast to the bullet-hell in Funny Mode, and the color of the bullets make it very hard to see them in many parts of the game... there should be a $1,000,000 prize for beating Funny on real hardware with multiple witnesses, but nobody would even pass the 1st level.
I'll quote myself from an earlier response: "I practiced this game for about 2 weeks straight (logging many hours almost every day) before I cleared it on Funny difficulty. I do use emulators for some practice sessions, mainly for doing single stage runs or practicing boss fights or finding safe spots (this is how I discovered the ability to milk the stage 7 boss for points).." The main thing is this game is extremely generous with extra lives, so you can die a lot of times and still clear the game. I still find Super R-Type and Strike Gunner STG on the highest difficulties to be harder than this game.
This game on the SNES is alright, but it felt rather generic (presentation, graphic looks bland, and sounds very generic) compared to its X68000 original (has better graphics, kickass opening and great music). Also the X68k version is much easier than the SNES version since the default difficulty on the X68k original was set on easy.
Man, talk about not judging a book (Or video game) by it's cover. Also: "Funny" difficulty? What, did "So hard you'll sweat your balls off" difficulty scare people away? I didn't see anything to laugh about in there..............and I still wish the banjo guy was the last boss dammit.
I hate bullet-hell shooters like this, mostly because seeing so many bullets on-screen just looks wrong to me. It's graphically--and I mean in the graphic design kind of way--just clumsy and awkward. Compared to something like U.N. Squadron, Phalanx' more bullet-hell approach just doesn't look right to me (it's constantly visually cluttered): ruclips.net/video/_Fsmcvt8ftk/видео.html
There is actually a reason for this. This is a port from the sharp system, and in the original version, there is no funny difficulty. They added this in as a joke, not knowing that this would actually become its own genre shump later on. But you aren't wrong of the fact that the bullets are butt ugly, and apparently the reasoning for that is they were trying to stick to an art style. Personally, they could have easily just gone with something like pearl white.
Unfortunately nobody seems to know what it's used for. I've heard rumors that you were suppose to mail that code back to Kemco for some reason but it's still a mystery. I don't know if we will ever have an answer to this long standing question. Too bad.

Christ man, how many times have you played this? And how old are you? I'm 34 and love this game, but shut...
I'll quote myself from an earlier response:
"I practiced this game for about 2 weeks straight (logging many hours
almost every day) before I cleared it on Funny difficulty. I do use
emulators for some practice sessions, mainly for doing single stage runs
or practicing boss fights or finding safe spots (this is how I
discovered the ability to milk the stage 7 boss for points).."
The main thing is this game is extremely generous with extra lives, so you can die a lot of times and still clear the game. I still find Super R-Type and Strike Gunner STG on the highest difficulties to be harder than this game.
Bio cave was my least favorite lvl and i beat this game never knowing each weapon had a special
Turn down the music to the game and play banjo music over it. It fits!
They must do a auto enemy hp scan for every video game cause it fuken takes forever to kill a boss 🤬
Was a robot playing this run?
Personally, they could have easily just gone with something like pearl white.
it is no possible thi game play, it is tas, but congractulations, nao é possivel alguem jogar assim, sem bem que eu ja vi, hehehe.
it's not a TAS. There are no fake runs on my channel, this was played and captured from a real SNES.
I dont understand that mission 3 boss..Its just that. The boss is covered And its pretty weird but you got an.
...INSTANT KILL
It was nearly an instant kill on the 3rd boss, because he sacrificed his transformation for a special attack.
I love this game but level five is just stupid.
whats with the password?
Unfortunately nobody seems to know what it's used for. I've heard rumors that you
were suppose to mail that code back to Kemco for some reason but it's still a mystery. I don't know if we will ever have an answer to this long standing question. Too bad.
