This week, Jennifer & David are joined by actress, musician, and all-around icon, Hayley Kiyoko! Wizards fans know her as “Stevie” and she’s taken the world by storm with her pop music career!
Jennifer, David, and Hayley spill all the tea about her time on Wizards and the dynamic between Stevie and Alex. They talk about Hayley’s fears of coming out, how Disney wasn’t ready to explore openly queer relationships, and how much it means to Hayley to be a positive example for so many young people. Hayley also shares the freedom she’s found through creating music.

I remember watching the Stevie episodes and even back then I knew “Alex and Stevie have feelings for each other” in my little kid mind. I’m so glad this has been confirmed.

They'd have to do it as an r-rated film cause now everyone that grew up with the film is in the 18-49 demo
disney doesn’t usually do shows and movies with majority of the cast being adults. look at the few reboots we do get from disney..
It's so weird because they announced the sequel on the view and then just never did it. One of the cast members said it was because the movie had covered every possible character arc and there was nowhere else to go, even though the book it is based on had a sequel so they could have just adapted that.
They can’t entirely do it with the original cast, a lotta the actors have become criminals and are in jail right now

The way they basically offed Stevie and never mention it again, shocked me as a kid. Had me believing that they just casually offed someone on the Disney channel

In response to fans wondering if Stevie had died, Todd J. Greenwald followed up on Stevie's storyline. He stated that "Stevie was fused back together and sent off to an island for 6 months of 'Soul Rehab'. She now lives a happy, fulfilling life back in the Wiz World with her new dogs, Mark and Susan. He also stated that this will never be shown in an episode, and Stevie's storyline has ended.

I have always loved Hayley Kiyoko and all of her work. Wizards, Lemonade Mouth, Girls Like Girls. She continues to be one of my favorite role models from my childhood and I love how she empowered so many

I will always love Stevie and Alex’s dynamic, it was so interesting! Getting to see how dynamic Stevie was, we got to see especially how sweet she can be when she told Alex to be appreciative of her relationship with her brother. It proves she really cared about Alex. I’ll always be sad they were only friends for a short time but it felt like their relationship was so natural and felt like they were already such good friends! I love the idea of Stevie x Alex, they’re so cute. Such lesbian and bi vibes to me. Always loved Stevie so much, helped me come to terms with my own sexuality.
A spin off with her would have actually been really interesting to see

I related to Hayley so much in regards to 'I am an artist so I will create and use any medium to express myself'. People ask me all the time, what my favorite medium is ? And I list everything. I love all mediums and forms of art. I was big into acting and theater and improv. I love to sing, play guitar, and write songs/poetry. And I love all of the art forms of drawing/painting/sculpting/etc. Its so beautiful to be a creative person ❤️

I had that plastic Alex wand haha I still have it somewhere but I don't think the sounds work much anymore. Growing up and to this day I wanted Alex's wand SO BAD. I just thought it was so gorgeous, I loved the fact it was red because that's my favourite colour, and how it was shiny with the jewels... man I still want it haha it just looks like it's actually magical

David, my mom taught me about the oxygen mask method for taking care of yourself first! So lovely to hear such a positive conversation about self-care.
I really like how Hayley said “if you don’t have your health you can’t show up the way you want to” as opposed to “if you don’t have your health you don’t have anything” which is often what dialogue around health challenges looks like.
I’ve been chronically ill since I was a kid and I still struggle to let myself rest because I feel that if I can’t keep up with my healthy/abled peers I’m a failure. But I’m NOT, I’m just slower, need more breaks and experience the world in a different way.
Thank you Jen and Hayley for being so honest and vulnerable by sharing your health challenges, it means so much to me as a sick kid that found comfort in Wizards while I was stuck at home/in hospital.
(Also I am a proud member of the “really really liking Harper and Stevie as a child to realizing you’re queer” pipeline, thank you for your service to the community 🫡)
