Thanks, Luke. I have watched many so called 'pepper experts' explain many things about peppers but, not once have they ever mentioned how to tell when a pepper is really ripe & perfect for seed-saving! Please keep throwing in those extra perks! It's those little things that make or break a gardener
I have been going to the farmer's market and when I see a pepper I like, I buy it, save the seeds and write down what I know about it. Saves on buying seed packets, is fun to do, and I love the excitement of growing my own little experiment, courtesy of my local farmer friends!
+Tina Fisher That is the spirit! I totally do that too.
Im new to this amd my first time stsrting to grow my own and yes im excited and nerves
You blew my mind! Will start doing!
@@MIgardener so I found your channel looking for an answer Boy I'm glad. So I just cut up an orange, red, and yellow bell peppers. Are those seeds viable? Or should I save only green?
Quick question maybe somebody will know next year whenever I'm ready to grow these how many would I put per pot I do container gardening
What a talented veg gardener this young man is.. I've learned so much from all his videos.. It's given me confidence and positive results, and I enjoy passing the knowledge on to my friends who garden..
Hi Luke, I just wanted to thank you for all the help. My roommate is handicapped from a major stroke and I lost my job, we never thought we would be struggling believe me. We are blessed to have room for a garden, and have used a lot of your tips. I started peppers from discarded peppers at the store using your directions, and they are doing great! Thanks again!
Thank you for not dragging this video out like others did
I just want to say thank you guys. You've given me some amazing information. Last summer I tried my hand at my very first garden, it was awesome, didn't get much more than a few cucumbers lol but I've been researching and watching your videos and tried my hand this year... *fingers crossed*
This was a huge help to me. I knew the pepper needed to be ripe but knowing it should be leathery before picking is excellent information. Thank you!
+snookie65 So glad you liked it!

Years ago I was collecting seeds from chili's when in the middle of it without thinking I began picking my nose for a second. Big Mistake!!! WEAR GLOVES...
Can relate
I was making butter chicken and rubbed a dried ghost pepper into it... washed my hands... then touched my eye... with a pepper seed lodged in my finger nail. Twenty minutes later I started to be able to open my eye.
Don't pick your nose.
I rubbed my eyes while cutting up a Carolina Reaper... lol Oops. I actually got one heck of a high from it after the heat wore off.
@@jrich7821 oh wow, dried hot pepper burns more then fresh. I can almost relate, I did it with a wet Carolina Reaper.
You are seriously taking my brain to the next level with these seed videos. Thank you for being extremely thorough in your explanations!
a helpful tip: use gloves
Dendi Handian so true
Don't scratch your balls
If you save the seeds from reg plants you bought at store will they produce peppers the next yr

@@brandonfoley7519 🤣🤣🤣
Found it.
Paprika is made from Capsicum Pepper.. 10-15 chili or red bell pepper plants stringing them and hanging them dry or use a dehydrator.. Must be totally dry. Dispose of stems, save seeds for next year, Break pepper into small pieces. Grind pepper into a powder form (can use blender), stored in an air-tight jar.
Linda Readman every pepper is a capsicum
Thank you for this. I wasn't leaving the seeds out to dry for long enough before putting them in a sealed container.
I realised I had no long thai chilli seedlings started this year. So I bought a single chilli for a few cents, took three seeds out and put them in a jiffy pellet. A few days later they sprouted.
+Darkfalz79 Awesome! That is how you do it!
That only works with local produce, things shipped from other countries get sterilized with radiation which makes the seed inviable.
Paul smith Thanks for telling people that, many don’t know why they can’t get those seeds to grow and after I found that out I started growing my own peppers because I don’t want to eat anything that’s had radiation!!
@@paul9813 That makes me so sad... I just got a bell yesterday that is red and yellow striped and thought I could re-grow~ oh well.
@@paul9813 They're doing the same thing with people.
I didn’t even realize they would turn red, thanks for the info 👍
Not with pepper seeds (which I will do with my serrano peppers this year, thanks to Luke) but I have bought organic tomatoes from the grocery store then in this order...
1. Thinly slice tomato into 1/2" slices.
2. Place a slice into a rich soil amendment like miracle grow
3. Lightly cover with more of the soil you used. (Enough that when you water, the tomato slice won't show through.)
4. Water your slice or slices everyday. (Do not let it dry out.)
5. Within 14 days you should see tomato sprouts. When they are about 6-8 inches tall, transplant them outdoors. (Or keep them in your pot if that's what you want.)
HINT: I never pluck the smallest tomatoes from the bunch when planting them outdoors in my garden.
And that's my cheap and wonderful way to grow my own tomatoes!
Thank you. I needed to know about this specific pepper. I saw in one article that if they turn red that means fungus or that they're rotting. Misleading! This helped me a lot.
This is very helpful on saving seeds. I’m just starting to garden myself. I’m going through all the years of your videos.
I had no idea that peppers are being picked before ripening. All the more reason to home grow. I have a hard time with tomato but I think your advice will help. I'm a container gardener on a 2nd fl apartment so will be growing herbs, cherry tomato, lettuce, and easy stuff. Thank you Luke.
LadyMaltese now you know... Do you feel good about you grow...?.
You can also save the plant ,pepper plants regrow , cut down to almost bottom ,you will be ahead by months - we are on our 4th year on 8 green peppers .
Good luck
Big hugs Texas
Thank you for teaching me how to save the seeds. I saved some from a non- ripe pepper. Thank you so much bc I would have out wayyyy too much work into it. Have a blessed day.
Even after all the years watching your channel I still watch and learn from your helpful videos. Thanking you for all your hard work. Congratulations on your success. Can't wait to see what's next! The Nana's from Central Florida
Love your vids. I have been using them to help me with my container gardening up here in Canada....and yes they have helped. I only get, at most, five to six hours of direct sunlight on my deck a day in the summer. I have managed to grow some great tomatoes. This year I have tried peppers, lettuce, spinach and herbs as well as more varieties of tomatoes. I am not sure about the peppers. I feel, if I want to grow them next year, I may want to try and plant them earlier. Anyway, I have tons of lettuce thanks to your vids on lettuce and I have harvested plenty of spinach (not sure if it is a traditional spinach, I think it is called beet leaf spinach) from one medium-sized pot. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Wow this was good, I didn't know that about banana peppers or general, I tried to save some chocolate bell peppers and they didn't germinate so I guess I didn't let them get ripe! Thanks a bunch!
You need ripe peppers as their seeds are mature enough, remove the seeds by cutting the pepper open and twisting (be careful not to damage the seeds here), lay them on a paper towel and dry them until they are brittle. Some seeds may get black spots, those are signs of disease and should be thrown away, the rest are ready to germinate.
You're welcome.
How do you know when they are brittle? How do I know when the pepper is ripe/mature enough. If it's just turning red is it ripe, or does it have to be bright red? Does it matter what kind of paper towel? When will the black spots show up? How do I store them for later use? If I do store them do I have to keep checking them for black spots? How often should I check on them? Will it ruin all of the pepper seeds if I don't get the spotted ones out?
Thank you.
Middle-aged MacDonald Well you gave me quite a task, lol.
You can check the brittleness by snapping a seed in half, if it breaks the rest is good, if it bends they need more drying.
If your pepper is supposed to be red then bright, ripe red, if yellow then bright ripe yellow, and so on. Take seeds from the biggest, juiciest, brightest pods only.
A thick paper towel preferably, other than that no.
Black spota can appear anytime, diseased seeds won't sprout.
Store them in an airtight sealed container, ziplock bag is perfect.
No need to keep checking on them, the disease is in the inside of the seed it won't spread, it won't cause problems.
Super helpful video, especially the part about how to tell when a pepper is ready to have its seeds harvested. Thank you!
Thanks Luke! ♥️♥️♥️I have been keeping in the water for the 24 hours before drying it out! So ,thanks a lot! Seems like a very good advice! Love peppers! Have been growing them for years. Funny, seems that my husband is much more successful than me
Thru trial and error I learned how to save mature pepper seeds. Yippee! Your tutorial matched what I've been doing. EXCEPT, I didn't know banana peppers turned red. (Not growing them this year). You're a great resource...I subscribed after I saw your first video. Thanks for the tips!
You've come a long way with your channel hey. The audio quality is way better now..
Keep up the good work, you're my favorite gardening mentor
ariana nene lmfao the audio sounds horrible like he’s in a tunnel
Informative and a big help, a room with some acoustics would help keep the sounds from sounding like in a ceramic room
Thank you on that bit of info on drying HOWEVER I have let mine dry for over a month ARE they still ok to plant?
Thank you for the perfect answer to my question.
Thank you I love simple and to the point
So, I've been trying to save seeds from my jalepeno peppers, and they keep turning brown right away. I guess that means the pepper isn't ripe enough?
Thank you, Young Luke.
nicely explained..thank u
Thanks Billy!
+MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living once you harvest the seeds how many years can you save the seeds
@@MIgardener Actually I don't know if you realize this but every pepper species has a color ones that ripe to a different color you can actually buy different Seeds that ripen to green so it's not true that those are the only colors they riping to but it is true that stores only use 4 particular colors red green a and yellow and orange But it is true that they go through multiple colors before they get to their set color there is a ghost peppers for example that ripe completely in a green There's even yellow ones Orange ones chocolate covered ones and even white ones
I love your gardening tips.
Just harvested my first ever pepper in UK 😊..Going to save her seeds :)
Maybe not Its a green bell pepper..Awwe man
Thanks MIgardener. Love your videos. you're the real deal
i CAN DO THIS! THANKS FOR THE INFO .
Great video. Thorough and well presented. Thanks.
Wow! I never knew how to tell if peppers were fully ripe. Thanks.
I don't have the room to guarantee that my peppers aren't cross pollinating. However, there might be some interesting crops from the crossbreed seeds.
Sure like to see these pepper plants when the fruit is ripened. How tall your plant will grow?
Kim Yee banana pepper plants aren’t very tall. Maybe 2 feet max probably depending where you live.
Is it possible to plant pepper seeds right away after harvest or do the have to dry first. thanks for the great videos
Thanks for the great video. You explained everything very clearly. With any luck, I'll have a nice crop of Thai chilis next year!
When u save your seeds what do you store them in ? Great video ! Thanks !
If the peppers are planted next to a different type of pepper can u still save seed n get the same pepper ?
Thank you, easier than I thought! I'm going to save Carolina reaper chillie seeds and grow some next year
Thanks for the tutorial. Very informative. I am trying to grow peppers and wanted to keep the extra seeds for next year. Thank you. I will be subscribing.
I literally counted my seeds from two red peppers. I put them on a paper plate and grouped them in 10s 335 seeds! That’s incredible!
Do I have to dry them for a few days before planting? The rest I’ll save
I know that this an old video but I just looked it up. I was wondering if seeds from green peppers bring green peppers and red Red peppers so on so forth. Just so I know . Ty store all the info that you give to us all
Good, easy, informative content. You have a new subscriber!!! Thank you!
Awesome thanks so much 😊❤Patti from Newark Delaware 💓
About to put this video to use, harvested some overripe peppers
Great video Luke. I have done same process in my video with seeds saving tips for peppers, tomato and other vegetables. Thanks for tips and teaching as always!!
I have bad luck with wonder bell peppers and mini bell peppers this year! I had maggots inside those peppers and they were kind of rotting almost the peppers came out weird. But my haberneros. Jalapeños and Thai chilies came in strong and yielded tons!
I’m going to try to grow peppers this summer!
After the seeds are dry what is the best method to store them for next year? Thank You
Thank you Fir the tips of how to save seeds.
I didn't know that banana peppers turn red, thanks Luke! I so don't like the taste of green peppers, might as well eat grass.😊
I think the most intimidating part (at least for me) is wondering if there is a hybrid vs heirloom problem. Is cross pollination a problem generally with peppers?
+JudkinsJourney I have had the worst luck with planting peppers from my own seed for this reason I think. One year I planted what I thought was a cubanelle. When it came up it was a pimento type pepper. It was a pretty pepper but, it was NOT a cubanelle. And absolutely looked nothing like the seed I thought I was planting. I had never grown the pimento type before so there was no seed mix up. LOL
+JudkinsJourney peppers are not very commonly crossed. same with tomatoes. You will be fine saving the seeds, and even if they do happen to cross, you will be ok! You will just end up with a surprise pepper!
True! And there is nothing wrong with surprises. :)
Good to know :) Thanks
Are you kidding? Almost all the peppers and tomatos you buy in the grocery store are hybrids. They won't produce fruits from their seeds that are the same as the one you bought.
Thank you. How many seeds do we put in the ground to make 1 plant???
Thank you 🙂
Thank you for really small but helpful advise :)
Thank you for this video. I love it, hopefully I can save some mild Jalapeño seeds this year. Thank you.
is it the same with Bellpepper?
Sorry for all the questions but this is the last one , the big on, what do you recommend to give trifecta plus watermelon, sweet corn, butternut squash, parsley, cilantro, sweet basil, dill, beets, broccoli, crookneck squash, sunflower, peppers, carrots, cauliflower, garden beans, lettuce, Dills Atlantic giant pumpkins and Big Max pumpkins and sugar baby watermelons.
+Let's Garden Together give anything with big yields 1/4 cup twice a year. Give things like dill, beets, carrots, parley, etc. just a 1/4 cup spread out throughout. I just use the 1/4 cup over 2 square feet.
Hi. Thank you for this information. I have a question though. Can I put my seeds into an envelope like they have in the stores and then put that envelope into a mason jar in the fridge for extra preservation?? My seeds have been sitting in a dish in the counter for days. Do you think they are still good? Thanks again.
Thanks for the info but my neighbors and family like the green peppers. My peppers never get to the red state. Can i allow the younger seeds to mature?
Can you do a video on which seeds it’s safe to do the water float check you talked about with Mellon seeds?
What is the best way to store the seeds and for how long are they usable? Maybe save them in vaccum bags?
MIgardener...Sprouting question: can you eat pepper sprouts? Or pepper micro-greens?
What colour of pepper seeds should be good for next year. I notice some seeds are brown some are white. Please advice
Thanks for the info! Do you know whether the seeds can be dried using a dehydrator? Or is it important that they dry & ripen over the 4-5 day period?
I live in the south where You can get 2 growing seasons or more from peppers, meaning You will have ripe peppers by the end of May and can plant more seed and harvest again by the end of August. My question is, do I have to make the seeds go through a cold season (like putting them in the fridge or freezer for a little while) before planting them or can I plant them immediately after they’ve dried out?? I’ve only been buying 6-8” pepper plants and I’ve recently started growing some from store bought seeds and they’re quite easy to grow for me and I’ve harvested some seeds and they’ve been drying for 4 days.
Is it practical to let the green peppers from garden ripen on my kitchen counter before processing them for seed? Hard frost coming.
so would you do the same thing with bell peppers you would use the ones from the red peppers ?
How do I store them? What do I put them in ?? How long will they last ?
I have sugar rush peach, Hungarian hot wax, and Ozark giant all growing in the same bed, plants are 12" away from each other. Will they crossbreed? That's why I've been hesitant to save my homegrown seeds :)
thanks.. good information
Great. Thanks so much.
What about cross pollination? Is that a concern when growing a variety of peppers close together? How do we prevent it?
So i should let my red bell pepper turn leathery before removing the seeds???
Thanks bud.
I've noticed that with jalapenos and even my purple cayenne will turn from purple to red. Still need to save some seeds from my peppers. Maybe I'll do that this week.
+Gapeys Grub Do it! I have been doing it like crazy this week and I think I am almost done... (until I find another 2-3 varieties I love).
Hoping 5 yrs isn’t too late. Did the link with all your seed saving info happen? If so, please share.
Namaste
Quick question. Can you use seeds from (yellowish) spicy pickled peppers? Will they germinate while they are kept in water, salt and vinegar ?
Great job I just salvaged the seeds from a couple of peppers... Will each seed produce a pepper plant or is it more like plant more than necessary because not all will take to the soil?
Are all pepper plants heritage? I have a tangerine dream plant that just blew me away this year with the flavor and prolific fruit. I'm wondering if I should keep the seeds or propagate cuttings through the winter?
Do you have to wait until season or can you start the seedlings indoors at any time?
Thank you!... What if I put the seeds that are not from a totally ripened bell pepper in some soil ...will it still grow and become a viable plant like any other bell pepper?
I'm saving seeds from store-bought organic red and orange peppers. Some of the seeds are wet so I'm wondering if I should wash them off before letting them dry. This is only my second attempt at seed saving. I'm a newbie.
Do you trust growing store peppers? What are the chances of it being cross pollinated, ik that just because you have a scorpion pepper doesn't mean you will get the same plant from the seeds
Will a pepper seed mature once the pepper is already picked? Will a immature pepper become mature with good seeds?
I live in a tropical climate, o my get winter for 3-4 days. Miami if you’re wondering. When can I plant the seed? Any month of the year?
Fantastic Video
What do you think the success rate is, from saving seeds from young peppers?
GOOD VIDEO,GOOD INFO>
What about cross pollination? Is there anything to worry about there?
I have saved pepper seeds before…why do the sometimes turn brown and other times they don’t. Does this have to do with ripeness?
Great video, so helpful! Also, I just got a delivery yesterday of some seeds from MIGardener, and will probably save some for next year (I only recently learned if you all!) I’m a subscriber! Best - Adam
