I know this is a very subjective topic but I don't think anyone can tune a kit the way Simon can. His entire kit sounds completely natural, wide open tuning with no overtones. I would love for him to do a comprehensive DVD on tuning.
He was yet important from the second half of the '70. He was hired for the records produced by Roger Glover...David Coverdale, Judas Priest, R. Glover, and than Ian Gillan. My favourite performance is on the Jon Lord solo album. He was close to the Deep Purple family...
I love the pageant snare the most out of these with the gladiator being a close second. Tama drums are absolutely fantastic, would never switch brands.
Gladiator is the most versatile one. It's basically his/Tama's version of the Black Beauty/Supraphonic, two snare drums he owns and loves the sound of, but only uses in studio occasionally..
Boy those snares sound unbeliveable. I have always loved Tama drums and I always will. No other drum Copmany comes close. If you want to play the best sounding drums in the world, then choose Tama. There is no other choice.
I currently have the monarch on lay by when i saw it in real life my jaw dropped, when i got to test it out my jaw fell off, when the shop told me because im a great customer and i can have a price reduction i had a heart attack!
It looks like Simon is playing his right hand (left for the viewers) like he's playing timpani @ 1:33. I don't know if he turns his wrist like that out of bad habit, or someone long ago taught him to play like that. I had a bad habit for a long time where my right hand would look as if I was slicing into the drum, so it could just be a bad habit that makes Simon turn his wrist like that.
@paulwall1981 i agree with you my friend...i play drums for 4 years now and tama are the best sounding drums imo. although i sometimes doubted through the noise around pearl or dw or sonor or other brands i believe that nothing sounds like a tama. It's a pity that the company isn't as powerful as it was until the early '00s...but their product stays the same...
@paulwall1981 Nah, Yamaha are comparable, the only thing Tama really has on them is the Bubinga shells, and even then, they don't really compare to the PHX series. But Tama, if they're not as good, really aren't far behind at all.

he needs to work on his hand stick technique no t a bad effort though for an old guy you should get the drummer on from Blink 182....he will show you what drummings ALLLLLL about, dun worry.
Gotta be honest.. what could have been a fantastic video was RUINED BY THE EDITING.. whoever edited the footage needs to be fired or look at a different career field.

😊😊😊
No Overtones?
😂
Bought the Gladiator on Friday last week and it´s just an amazing snare... Can´t find the Words to describe it.
Simon is the most influential drummers of the post 70's rock world, an amazing talent worthy of 4 signature snares...
Phil Collins :)

1:33 Gladiator
2:42 Pageant
3:55 Monarch
5:45 All together
4:11 30th Anniversary Snare
I want to hire this man to read me all the time....he has such a calm voice...btw he's my favourite...;)
I know right?! I love hearing him talk
Yea...... he has a relaxing tone voice. And he is one of my favourite drummers, it's a delight to watch him playing
same! in all
All of his snares sound AMAZING!
I`ve got the Gladiator, a wonderful snare
Those triple strokes are incredible...
Gladiator sounds the best to me!
I love the pageant snare the most out of these with the gladiator being a close second. Tama drums are absolutely fantastic, would never switch brands.
Love that pageant . Reminds me of snares used in some of my favourite funk tunes.
All the snares are sweet. I prefer the Gladiator. Metal cuts through everything. Like risingskater, I dig the kit. Simon is smooth.
I got the gladiator snare :)
it's just a wonderful snare you can use it in any type of drumming :)
the price says it all :)
It doesnt say anything, built your own Drums.
Wow they all sound great!
Gladiator is the most versatile one. It's basically his/Tama's version of the Black Beauty/Supraphonic, two snare drums he owns and loves the sound of, but only uses
in studio occasionally..

@dannyss29 Yeah, the Monarch sounds great. But obviously, everyone needs all four!
0:03 Obi Wan, is that you??
I like the Pageant. I am not a big fan of 14" snare drums, and the Pageant would therefore fit my preferences.
CaptainJoseph well I like the Gladiator better!
I would play that snare in a heart beat!!!!!!
@spurious.To each his own my friend and it is good to hear from you. Keep in touch.
He sounds clean with those triple strokes. It took me about 2 months to get that fluent. Simon is Awesome!!!
I assume he is playing drums for a bit longer than two months already.
he`s tuning them and playing them all to sound like drum heaven.
pageant is my favorite.
Excellent drummer
I saw the Mike Portnoy snare drum video, and the contrast between the sound quality and recording method is.. holy fuck.
Man, i'm not really into small snares but damn The Pageant sounds really fine!
@RigoStar Yeah no problem. I just bought a snare off of the guy. Great snare and he really is a pleasure to deal with
theres a snare at my church thats 14" thats tuned like CRAZY high and sounds just like that second snare he had the 12" but it sounds amazing
I currently have the monarch on lay by when i saw it in real life my jaw dropped, when i got to test it out my jaw fell off, when the shop told me because im a great customer and i can have a price reduction i had a heart attack!
love your playing with judas priest. simon is a badass!
I want them all! And the kit!
I want one! They probably cost a fortune but I want one!...
Simon should be the next presenter on the shopping channel :)
those and the kenny aronoff one look really good.
Gladiator *-* great snare
I like the double bass drum set in the back.
i like his style of how he does those drumrolls and shit
Cool video!
simon forever
the drums sound great
GAHHH I DIDNT KNOW MAPLE BUBINGA SHELLS EXISTED!!!!!! I've wishing for the past few months that I'd find one. If only it wasn't too expensive
👍fajné omastky🥁
that 12" snare is S__WEEET!!!!
Snares like a boss
Yes, its beautyful.
Hello Simon!!
just a litle detales: Please cont the number of lugs at the monark and the 30 an. snaredrum.....8/16 or 10/20.
you know you made it good as a drummer when you have not one, not 2 but 4! bloody drums haha
@mapexlb I do believe he tunes his drums himself. He is just that kind of guy.
@blackpearl961963 I think I understand why his hand is turned over. That's the way he plays his right hand on the kit. DUR! hahaha. Just noticed it.
@spikeman23 I like the pageant but I would probably use it the same way he uses it, as a secondary with the switch down
@XDrummerSteve If you are interested in a Monarch, there is one on ebay in Ontario, Canada for $425 Canadian
I`ve got it but how tune it optimally? The Gladiator that is
@thedrummerman4 oh thanx!! im thinking about it....
More of a Pearl guy than a Tama guy, but I love the Monarch and the 30th Anniversary snares!
love pageant
I'd pick the Monarch.
Monarch (Y)
that's the best one
@paulwall1981 i agree with you my friend...i play drums for 4 years now and tama are the best sounding drums imo. although i sometimes doubted through the noise around pearl or dw or sonor or other brands i believe that nothing sounds like a tama. I would like to have all 4.
how are the snares tunned? I really want to get that amazing sound!
wow! the third one sounds like a supra? i think so. great post great drummer
Am I only one thinking about Spinal Tap while watching this?
GLADIATOR!!
BRONZE!!
YAY SNARES!!!!
Like the monarch the most.
So you have a signature snare.... thats cute xD
@tolisdrums.Agreed my friend. IMO Tama are the no1 in drums. Nuff said.
Anyone knows which he used as main snare on the Tambu-album?
monarch is my favorite
1:37 freemason sign on the t-shirt...they are everywhere
Nice !
Gladiator !!
go simon!
Great
where could u go to make ur own signature snare?
anyone knows what snare he used in Encores, Legends, & Paradox (ELP tribute) album?
he said i can check them out in real laif? is that a website? anyone has a link to it?
does anyone knows whose music is in the background? probably simon, but who is playing the guitar?
Manganese
i have a tama starclassic copper its awesome :)
I think it's the pageant snare for me
which Pearl- snare do you have?
Only Simon can play four different snares and make it awesome..
Monarch!!
ah-ok, had a reference series 6,5 x14 brass, great drum but traded it for my COB.
@paulwall1981 Nah, Yamaha are comparable, the only thing Tama really has on them is the Bubinga shells, and even then, they don't really compare to the PHX series.
But Tama, if they're not as good, really aren't far behind at all.
Keep the anniversary and throw the rest to the kids
A background song name please.
+Bendegúz Fekete a bit late, but the song is called Manganese by Simon Phillips
@nobsiii I envy you.
The place in the mall where you pay the cost to be the boss
I can tune all 4 of those drums identical and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
They all sounded great. I wasn't a fan of the 30th. It could be they all sound amazing, and the 30, not so much?
ME QUEDO CON LA GLADIATOR
the brand is'nt really important. it's your style, that has to match.
Interesting to see, that his only metal snare, is bronze..
translation into Spanish please
