I’m an American of Pakistani origin and looking into my roots, I deeply regret partition, I wish it never happened. What a sad and unfortunate set of events that killed so many people on the basis of religion. If I was alive at that time, I would have never let Pakistan happen, not in a million years, I have so much sorrow over what happened, we would have been so powerful together, like a super state. I am sorry to all Indians for the pain of Pakistan’s birth on behalf of this Pakistani Origin individual.

Partition of Assam - Assam too was partitioned in 1947. It was Sylhet district of Assam that was partitioned. Sylhet was a native Bengali district of Assam. A plebiscite was held in the district where the people were supposed to cast their votes to decide whether Sylhet would remain in India or join East Pakistan. Not enough voting polls were given at that time. Those that were given were all located in the Muslim majority areas. The people of Sylhet were promised that the plebiscite would take place in the presence of the military. However soldiers were not brought and the ones that were already present in the district were shifted to other places. As a result the Hindus of Sylhet could not vote properly and Sylhet was lost to East Pakistan by mere one lakh votes. It is very obvious that if the voting polls were also located in the Hindu majority areas then we would have surpassed the one lakh votes very easily keeping in mind that Sylhet had a fair share of Hindu population. From the above paragraph it should be quite clear to everyone that the plebiscite in Assam’s former Sylhet district was carried out completely unfairly. And this was done by the Congress leaders of Assam. It should be noted that the whole of Assam’s Sylhet district did not join East Pakistan. 86% of Sylhet district joined East Pakistan where as the remaining 14% is in Assam which is present day Karimganj district in Assam’s Barak Valley. Since Sylhet was a native Bengali district hence Karimganj too is a native Bengali district of Assam. Apart from Karimganj Assam also has two more native Bengali districts of Hailakandi and Cachar. These three districts are together called the Barak Valley.

good info sharing, when i was in school i used to feel the same that had we been united our cricket team would have been the best ( which is still the best even after partition) but now in 2020 i feel it was blessing in disguise for INDIA that Pakistan got separated...( although the violence that happened after partition in both side sends shivers down the spine even today...violence part is condemnable)

I don't understand why we should think British divided 'Bharat' into Pakistan and later into Bangladesh. I find this not a true fact when the fact is British got into Indian sub-continents and the invaded more than 500 small states and created a new Empire called British Empire. But yes, later British India was divided into India and Pakistan. So, how can we say British divided 'Bharat' which was never a country but a subcontinents with many political divisions. If you see the history then today's India is the largest Indian empire ever created when you see the Maurya Empire was Samudra Gupta during Chanakya's period was also smaller if we compared to what it is now. I think British united India more than they divided the British Indian into India and Pakistan. PS: Neither I'm British nor a Pakistani nor a Chinease. I am asking this question with genuene interest.
Okay then first answer me where does 'Bharata' meant a single country in any of the Vedas, scriptures or Puranas. Only, Bharatvarsam is mentioned in our scriptures which means 'Bharata' is an ideology or and later turned into a land mass practicing the Bhadra meaning Kingships later to be known as Brotherhood. My meaning of Bharat is an ideology being practiced by many political divisions of Bharat Varsam (itmay be called as today's continent) where people were collectively grouped based on Spiritual findings and they collectively nourished the culture of 'Bhava' 'Rata' and 'Tala' so whoever or wherever the Bharatas (the Kings) ruled, fought, invaded they maintained the ideology of 'Bharata'. So, my concept is there was never a country called Bharata until East India Company came, discovered the weakness, fuel the small quarrels of many small countries, made them fight against each other (Bhai Fute Gawar Lute) and then finally invaded all these counties and ruled as British India who looted for several years making the London richer and richer.

If Gupta Empire represents United India, then what about South India which was not a part of it. So, you mean only the today's North India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh is Bharat not the whole of South India and the Indian oceans. That was a blessing in disguise but not for dominions but domains of both Hindus and Muslims. Most of the people in Pakistan have completely forgotten their Indian identity as if they were pakistanis or Muslims even before the emergence of Islam. But Indians still consider Pakistan as part of India if not Hindustan. That is something to understand the difference specially while taking in account that all the inhabitants of India have been considered Indian even by the majority of the nation. Those who came from Afghanistan those who came from Central Asia nd turkey and Iran to rule but they eventually settled here but those from Britain also came to settle here but were not accepted by Indians as rulers. This difference in Indian psychology is very complex with very deep grounds. It were the britishers infact we should be thankful to who accepted us as a separate nation but where could the rights to rule come from since Indians had never gone through the process of democracy in the modern world. That process was built-in in this struggle for two nations. In fact this two nation theory is the groundwork for all the independent States of the world after the world wars. Hindus and Muslims could even live together but never could governed by the same set of rules. Theirs governance had to be separate because the Constitution of their norms is different. Though they are culturally the same specially in India. That was the dream of Dr. Allama Iqbal whose poem became the anthem for Indian Army. And he postulated that the only way for Independence would be a separate set of democracy and governance for the two majorities of the subcontinent. In Pakistan we still rever it by calling Barre sagheer Pak o Hind. That means that Pak is still considered a part of the South Asian Indian Subcontinent. Even if not by some means but it's sufficient to be at least in words. Even though Afghanistan is also a part of it both historically culturally and geographically. The old name of Afghanistan is a better witness to my statement. So by separate governances one can never infer separation by boundaries but by regulations and representations. At the levels of administration and democracy. The best comparison can be made to the Nordic countries including Finland which have nearly the same laws and norms but separate governances. Maybe the poet of east had been inspired from these countries. Or maybe it was the opposite. But the Britains came to rule and to divide and thus to take the reigns of constitutions in their own superb which they had influenced a lot during democratizing the British India. That is why most of the GDP of the two sides is still owned by the common wealth by some unknown resources and unknown means.

I’m an American of Pakistani origin and looking into my roots, I deeply regret partition, I wish it never happened. What a sad and unfortunate set of events that killed so many people on the basis of religion.

Partition of Assam -
Assam too was partitioned in 1947. It was Sylhet district of Assam that was partitioned. Sylhet was a native Bengali district of Assam. A plebiscite was held in the district where the people were supposed to cast their votes to decide whether Sylhet would remain in India or join East Pakistan. Not enough voting polls were given at that time. Those that were given were all located in the Muslim majority areas. The people of Sylhet were promised that the plebiscite would take place in the presence of the military. However soldiers were not brought and the ones that were already present in the district were shifted to other places. As a result the Hindus of Sylhet could not vote properly and Sylhet was lost to East Pakistan by mere one lakh votes. It is very obvious that if the voting polls were also located in the Hindu majority areas then we would have surpassed the one lakh votes very easily keeping in mind that Sylhet had a fair share of Hindu population.
From the above paragraph it should be quite clear to everyone that the plebiscite in Assam’s former Sylhet district was carried out completely unfairly. And this was done by the Congress leaders of Assam. It should be noted that the whole of Assam’s Sylhet district did not join East Pakistan. 86% of Sylhet district joined East Pakistan where as the remaining 14% is in Assam which is present day Karimganj district in Assam’s Barak Valley. Since Sylhet was a native Bengali district hence Karimganj too is a native Bengali district of Assam. Apart from Karimganj Assam also has two more native Bengali districts of Hailakandi and Cachar. These three districts are together called the Barak Valley.

PARTITION WAS A BLUNDER
I don't understand why we should think British divided 'Bharat' into Pakistan and later into Bangladesh. I find this not a true fact when the fact is British got into Indian sub-continents and the invaded more than 500 small states and created a new Empire called British Empire. But yes, later British India was divided into India and Pakistan. So, how can we say British divided 'Bharat' which was never a country but a subcontinents with many political divisions. If you see the history then today's India is the largest Indian empire ever created when you see the Maurya Empire was Samudra Gupta during Chanakya's period was also smaller if we compared to what it is now.
I think British united India more than they divided the British Indian into India and Pakistan.
PS: Neither I'm British nor a Pakistani nor a Chinease. I am asking this question with genuene interest.
Okay then first answer me where does 'Bharata' meant a single country in any of the Vedas, scriptures or Puranas. Only, Bharatvarsam is mentioned in our scriptures which means 'Bharata' is an ideology or and later turned into a land mass practicing the Bhadra meaning Kingships later to be known as Brotherhood.
My meaning of Bharat is an ideology being practiced by many political divisions of Bharat Varsam (itmay be called as today's continent) where people were collectively grouped based on Spiritual findings and they collectively nourished the culture of 'Bhava' 'Rata' and 'Tala' so whoever or wherever the Bharatas (the Kings) ruled, fought, invaded they maintained the ideology of 'Bharata'. So, my concept is there was never a country called Bharata until East India Company came, discovered the weakness, fuel the small quarrels of many small countries, made them fight against each other (Bhai Fute Gawar Lute) and then finally invaded all these counties and ruled as British India who looted for several years making the London richer and richer.
My concern is not with this topic, but with Bharat and India which I think are different things. One, ideology or era other is republic country.

Gupta Empire was smaller if you compared to British India. But yes, it was larger than Mughals only. The definition on 'Bharat' is the defination of 'the republic of India' not of Bharat.

That was a blessing in disguise but not for dominions but domains of both Hindus and Muslims. Most of the people in Pakistan have completely forgotten their Indian identity as if they were pakistanis or Muslims even before the emergence of Islam. But Indians still consider Pakistan as part of India if not Hindustan. That is something to understand the difference specially while taking in account that all the inhabitants of India have been considered Indian even by the majority of the nation. Those who came from Afghanistan those who came from Central Asia nd turkey and Iran to rule but they eventually settled here but those from Britain also came to settle here but were not accepted by Indians as rulers. This difference in Indian psychology is very complex with very deep grounds. It were the britishers infact we should be thankful to who accepted us as a separate nation but where could the rights to rule come from since Indians had never gone through the process of democracy in the modern world. That process was built-in in this struggle for two nations. In fact this two nation theory is the groundwork for all the independent States of the world after the world wars. Hindus and Muslims could even live together but never could governed by the same set of rules. Theirs governance had to be separate because the Constitution of their norms is different. Though they are culturally the same specially in India. That was the dream of Dr. Allama Iqbal whose poem became the anthem for Indian Army. And he postulated that the only way for Independence would be a separate set of democracy and governance for the two majorities of the subcontinent. In Pakistan we still rever it by calling Barre sagheer Pak o Hind. That means that Pak is still considered a part of the South Asian Indian Subcontinent. Even if not by some means but it's sufficient to be at least in words. Even though Afghanistan is also a part of it both historically culturally and geographically. The old name of Afghanistan is a better witness to my statement. So by separate governances one can never infer separation by boundaries but by regulations and representations. At the levels of administration and democracy. The best comparison can be made to the Nordic countries including Finland which have nearly the same laws and norms but separate governances. Maybe the poet of east had been inspired from these countries. Or maybe it was the opposite. But the Britains came to rule and to divide and thus to take the reigns of constitutions in their own superb which they had influenced a lot during democratizing the British India. That is why most of the GDP of the two sides is still owned by the common wealth by some unknown resources and unknown means.
