Golf R fans will go on about its 0-60 times and how they can win every traffic light grand prix. Type R fans will say they have the most exciting car for fast driving. Hyundai fans will say theirs is the best value for money. Everyone loves arguing why their car is better than the next, instead we should celebrate the fact we have so much choice in the Hot Hatch market right now, in a decade or so we will all be in boring driverless electric cars.
What's funny is the RS275 would rank better than half of these as a driver's car given it was still selling brand new. Hopefully the new one is even better.
to put it into perspective the older megane rs was quicker than the 308 gti in various comparisons done by various motoring press with worse re050ea tyres (compared to the michelin PSS on the peugeot). That should give you an idea where it would be positioned
Except for the $46k 308GTi, I'm not sure why CA chose these high end >$50k hot hatches to compare the $40k i30N with. The line up should've included the regular WRX, Golf GTI, 308GTi, Focus ST and the i30N.
The only reason why the focus was significantly quicker on track is because of the cup 2 semis its on and lightened forged wheels. Put those tyres on the other hatches and lighter wheels and watch the gap shrink.
Just shows how fast the Golf R really is in the real world....(not on a race track) high 12sec quarter....mid 4sec 0-62....paired with what would be the best quality interior out of all the cars there aswell. And none of these guys picked it? Weird....the sales dont lie though.
But the Golf R is just a boring car at all. I even think the GTI is more fun and looks, sounds and drives better or at least more exciting than the R. In the real world not many people drive a car at the limit but rather want something exciting that lets them feel like the are driving at the limit. You get what I am saying? :D
Constantin Kunath have you ever driven one? Pretty easy to have "fun" with 300hp, AWD and a DSG. GTI is fun but the R humbles alot of bigger and badder cars...especially from a stand still at the lights for example.
Because it's the most boring to drive and doesn't feel fast when you're inside. There is being fast and the perception of being fast...2 different things.
lol, I have done launches in Golf R, A45, RS3...all equally boring. It's a CPU doing everything for you in the same way EVERY time. Not a single feeling of accomplishment in that. 1/4 mile power trips get boring pretty fast, especially if you (the driver) have no influence on the result at all.
On a first attempt ... the i30N is right up there with cars which are having a combination of bigger displacement, AWD, semi-slick tyres and costing up to 30% more. All this while it's still the heaviest car of the group. It only gets better from here as more agressive engine tuning, DCT and potentially AWD are coming next.
VW Golf R. Stonking performance when I need it (traffic light races and on ramp blasts) and civilised when I want (every day of my life). That's why it's such a huge seller.
RS1 I guess it may feel that way if most of the cars on this list are 5-6 second cars. One of the best things about the R is its launch control. It really makes you feel that 0.5-1 second difference in 0-100 acceleration.
Max Troy Right, R is most civilized and straight line performance is different league, combined with good track performance. Probably some suspension upgrades should improve track performance at the level of RS. OTOH, RS with very stiff suspension and torque vectoring is the track performance king. TypeR is ugly outside with aggressive exterior, but nice and exciting inside, probably the most performant fwd hatchback today available.
While I appreciate the Golf R for what it is...listing 'traffic light races' as a NEED is definitely the worst reason to get it, or any car for that matter...take it around turns, it should be about how the connection with the car feels. Not to impress the idiot in the V6 minivan or entry level sports coupe from 10 years ago...in a rush to get nowhere.
Great to see how fast the 2018 Golf R is in a straight line, not many tests out for the 2018 w/7spd DSG. 0-60 should be 4.4? I picked one up in January-great all-round car and I don't track it. Acceleration is more useful in the real world plus it corners just fine.
I bought the 2018 STI over the Focus RS, I knew straight away when driving both the RS was a better track car and performer but for me it was all about street car appeal, the Subaru rumble, preferred the interior & looks too. All great cars. 😍 Oh and my STI is Blue 👌
I30N is the heaviest car among those competitors. I want to see the lighter one and how it may perform in the second generation. Hyundai is doing so well these days.
That golf is so impressive only half a second behind the Civic, it looks a little more stealthy which I like, it has 4wheel drive which is great for where I live! I think I'm sold with the Golf R
Golf absolutely dominated on the 0-100 and the 1/4 mile, is by far the easiest to live with day to day and dare I say residual values would be towards the top end, definitely my choice. Looking forward to part 2!
The RS did not have "semi-slick" tires. Michelin Pilot Super Sports (or the optional PS2's) are summer tires..just like those offered by the others. Ford just put better tires on the RS.
Mate great idea and we tried to make it happen. It was a hell of a juggle with so many people, cars and locations to deal with, a group drag race just didn't fit in the shoot schedule and with where we had to shoot this, there was literally no where that could fit all the cars side by side and that was available. Fingers crossed for next time.
Snake Plisskin no they are not the same, same base and a lot of components, but not the same car. I dive an A3 3.2 at the moment, and it’s not the same as Golf R32, I can assure you :P
Snake Plisskin you do know that “performance” by which ppl usually mean straight line acceleration is not the only measure for a car? In fact it’s the thing that you care for when you get your first or second sporty car, by the time you grow up a bit you realise that it’s almost the least important bit
@@krisrudecki9477 we're talking new models here mate! S3 and R are MQB based vehicles with pretty much the same everything. My R has both Audi and VW logos on everything!!!
I don’t know if they do this on purpose but at no time do they acknowledge the key mechanical differences between these cars which play a huge part in their behaviour and the feelings they convey. For exemple they had the 2018 special edition RS. For starters, the AWD system is way ahead of the to others. Plus this year’s edition added the front LSD since the 2 years prior only had rear LSD. Added to that rear diff, it kill any other car in it’s class when it comes to corner exit. You just floor it out of the apex and both outside wheels get most of the torque to rotate the car and slingshot it out of the corner. The Subaru has a, sure competent but dinosaur old AWD system which is mechanical in comparison to the RS electronic AWD with RDU. And lets not even talk about that Haldex in the R which is just an attempt at fitting in from that poor disabled guy in high school. And steering...one guy talks about how the Subaru has a lesser feeling to it but never mentions it is one of the only or perhaps the only car there with hydraulic steering. And oddly enough, most car reviewers and car enthusiasts say would choose hydraulic vs electronic any day. (Unless the electronic one was super well tuned and programmed).
All valid points Matthew and thanks for watching the video. The reason we didn't go into that much details was A: If we did go into that level of engineering detail, it would only be fair to give every car that level of attention and the video would blow out to potentially 30 or 40mins long (way too long) and B: As we've reviewed each of these cars in detail before the Mega Test, that level of detail is available when watching or reading our reviews of each car separately. As far as the steering in the Subaru, we all found it to be inferior to every other car on test. Actually, we had Subaru just make sure something wasn't wrong with the steering and it was given their tick of approval but against the cars we had, it felt very ordinary.
Is Peugeot's weight number correct? Less than 1200 kg? That is very impresive in these days. And it is faster than STI on track by 0.8 sek. Peugeot needs to hire good chassis team and make this car fun. They got good weight numbers, they got amazing performance figures for 1.6 liter engine. They are so close to be amazing like in old days of 205 GTI and 306 GTI.
Andris Slisans the 308gti chassis is excellent with Peugeot sports slip diff setup. The fact is the Peugeot outperforms its gti rivals in all other tests Ive seen. The Aussie prejudice against it here is incredible, they keep referring it to as the French car with some misplaced contempt, while not even comparing the right cars like for like.
I’m looking at the new Veloster N when it comes out here in the USA since we won’t get the I 30 N here. I have always been a Veloster fan boy, even with its non independent rear end of the old days. Can’t wait to drive the new one!!! Great test, thanks!!!
Based on this video I think I need to get over my prejudice about its looks and go and test drive a Type R. I'm also really keen to visit my local Hyundai dealer once the N spec Veloster's start showing up Stateside. We don't get the i30 but the Veloster N has identical running gear and should be a similar driving experience.
@@mattb3910 They are Pilot Sport Cup 2 which are track day tyres, and more aggressive than the ContiSportContact 6 on the Civic. I think the standard tyre on the Focus is the Pilot Super Sport which is equivalent to the Continental.
I have to say its sad that everyone shits all over the french car i mean i totaly understand why the fact is Peugeot did it to them selves but it is sad
Because it's popular to shit on Peugeot. They don't deserve it. It is one of the , if not THE oldest, still mass-manufacturing car brands on this planet. Peugeot has a marvelous race and rally history and is still a top contender to this day. Sure, they have their ups and downs, but lately they came back rocking. People who don't appreciate the 308 GTi tend to be people who can't drive a manual properly or don't like hot hatches at all.
Everything went wrong once the 306gti ended production.. That was a long time ago. Peugeot have tried to come back many times since then but have been extremely misguided. The new 308 and 6 gti engines have had lots of issues apparently... Time to get it right and soon for Peugeot.. I own two Peugeot gtis btw.
Very objective journalism... seems like some cars are shinning from the very beginning of this review. Leaving feelings and impressions aside, I just wonder how the yanks can get sti to do 0-60 in high 4 in their review, while here it took almost 6s. And the speed run did not look very clean though. Anyone happened to used sport# mode? As for the RS, how was the RDU after full day on track? Did not overheat? Eventually, the buyer decides which car really gives him the most fun. Rgds
Cheers mate. As for the guys in the states, not sure. It was a very warm day and track temps were getting up there. We tried multiple different launch techniques and different settings and what you see here was the best run of the lot. RS didn't overheat and we gave it everything we had. It was and is a weapon of a car. None of the cars on test had any issues with reliability. Watch part 2 for which was the most fun and thanks for watching too.
Interesting when you compare this Golfs 0-100 time vs the time it did against the M140 in the Car Advice Joe Achillies video. Must be the track surface as it would have beaten the BMW with this result by .4 second and its the same Golf R in both viodeos!
All the cars had slow acceleration times in this video... I just the track surface was not great, and it might have been quite hot too (all these cars are turbocharged).
I noticed that the STI was the only one on which you made negative remarks, about all the others you had something to like, but almost nothing about the STI, is it that bad? all the american reviewers have something to love about the STi but all the australian reviewers I have seen despite this car, I dnt understand why there is such a huge performance and handling difference for the same car in a different continent.
Owned an MK 7 R and now own an RS. The RS is just so much more fun to drive on any kind of twisty road. The R just feels clinical and a touch boring by comparison.
David Bern The DSG is faster in a straight line the R manual is slower than the RS. Regardless as seen in the test the biggest difference is the advanced AWD torque vectoring system of the RS. You can carry more speed in the corners. I do get to the track quite often and am lucky that my commute is mostly backroads and little stop and go. I think this shootout nailed the order for me, I would likely take the RS then Type R then Golf R in that order.
thillyard1 those aussie roads must be smooth, cos most reviews seem to pint to the RS being sponsored by a Chiro association. That said in thde US Matt Farah seems to have got the car sorted with aftermarket help.
Sheldon Gannon and ive seen the i30N be totally obliterated by a 308 GTi on the track, like 3 seconds on a track with enough twisties on it (and it does this a good 95% of the time v the i30N). Remember the 308 GTi was not tuned on the ring like half the cars on test here, that tells you something ;)
Damn right - so here's the thing isnt t surprising how little the presenters actually commented on the completeness of the Golf R as a total package. Granted the Golf R may not be the greatest track car in the world but people you need to note the Golf R in this video was the de-tuned version for AUS so that makes a huge difference on the lap times etc...Do the race in the UK and Golf R will wipe the floor with all the other cars. It's the best car in its segment already a hot hatch that just keeps getting hotter...cant wait for the MK 8 to be launched!!
In real world Golf is way faster than everything else here. Anyway why would you spoil the test by bringing modified focus... or are these tires and diff available as options? If they are, it's ok.
If stock definitely the Type R, short gearing, well set up chassis and looks ridiculous If tune, Focus RS, as adding more power just means more torque vectoring led skids
Got a mk7 golf r awesome in race mode on the back roads great in eco doing the shopping and turns enough heads without shouting I'm fast to the thieves too much. Practical decent on fuel and quite cheap to run 👌
schumifan78 race mode dsg it does blip the throttle when coming down the gears which sounds good and can hear some pops, they do respond well to modding so I'm sure you can get it perfected to how you want
Not sure that this is a particularly fair test considering the RS was on Semi Slicks... if the CTR was on the same tyres I think it would have been as quick, if not slightly quicker as some other tests have shown... still would be happy with either :)
the RS was not on "semi slicks". They were OEM tires (either the Michelin Pilot Super Sports or the Michelin Pilot PS2's). I believe the OP said they were the MPSS. These are not "semi-slicks". The OP admitted it in other comments in thsi thread.
@@TassieLorenzo for a rod course, they’re just ok tires. There is no such thing as “semi slicks”. “Slicks” reference drag racing tires. Semi slicks could mean drag radials I guess.. Which these are not. They’re what...200TW summer tires
I can't speak for all the cars but I know the i30N comes with a pretty hard compound tire. I can't remember where I read it but the michellin ps4 tires performed a fair bit better then stock.
Great Test I am excited for the Second Part because I think then it will get more interesting. The problem here is that every car has a different rubber so the times are really not comparable.
CarAdvice.com Yes but it would be a perfect comparison if at least every car gets the same tyres so see how they really perform in comparison. But still it gives an idea of how they handle the i30N needs just a bit more power because of its weight!
German tuner already offers a powerbox (form of engine remap) that takes the N to 345 hp. However, it's not what the car is about. It's about driving fun. It's like an MX5 in it's own class: not even trying to be the fastest, but definitly the most fun car to drive in this video and for a lot less money too.
TheDudeInTheRedHotHatch can't agree more. I'm driving grey one and I'm so excited. The FUN factor is exceptional. Last weekend I've driven it 300 km - 71 laps on quite big (4,2 km length) racetrack in Czech republic and everything worked so unbelievably well.
Petr Vojtěchovský Driven it on Zolder and Spa in Belgium. It’s so much fun and even had a bloke driving shotgun that just went straight from the track day to the dealership to buy one for himself 🤣
(4) 200 kW - 308 GTi (6) 202 kW - i30N performance (5) 221 kW - WRX STI (3) 228 kW - Golf R (2) 235 kW - Type R (1) 257 kW - Focus RS I think the French with the smallest engine.
Just shows you how far ahead of the game Subaru was 20 years ago considering it hasn’t really changed apart from get fat lol 😂 I personally love the golf r
I wish the judges would run a power test through the dynamometer for each car. According to the test result, the speed produced by Golf R would equal that of A45 AMG which have a much higher power output, not by a car that only produces 215KW of power.
A car with semi slicks is always going to be bfaster than anything else. Geez, the tyres should've been same/similar setup for all. That Golf R though is in supercar territory with that performance. i30 N looks practical for a family and can hustle too. I'll bet its tyres let it down. I didn't notice a lateral grip test, is that something that can be considered next time please?
Hi Malcom. We tested the cars as they come from the dealer to you. We consider this to be the most fair comparison. Ford fit the RS LE with super sticky rubber and it was fortunate for it that the weather was hot and very dry. If it had rained maybe the RS wouldn't have faired so well.
Honda is not the best in term of reliability indeed, it's Lexus. But my point is that Honda is way above all its competitors in this video which doesn't mean it has zero problem ;)
The i30 N is not a car focused on top performance. The focus is on the Daily Car at a reasonable price. But it is the fastest car in an actual race with the same horsepower and weight. Think of car prices. They will also be the fastest cars if they focus on performance at high prices.
Adam (AK)- great to see you get snapped up as a presenter for Car Advice! Like I said in your DC2 video, you are so much more charismatic, interesting to watch, and no where as annoying as motoring journalists like Stephen Corby.... Can I dare say you might be the aussie version of Henry Catchpole? Keep up the great work! PS- If you are ever interested in reviewing a Kswapped DC2R at Wakefield for one of your videos, please let me know :)
Disappointed with the STi, I would pick the Type R out of the cars tested but if the new Megane takes after the RS250, 265 and 275 these hot hatches don't stand a chance on the track.
Prices in my country: What you would choose for this price? Hyundai I30N from 27 900 EU Peugeot 308 GTi from 30 900 EU Honda Civic Type R from 36 620 EU Ford Focus RS from 37 712 EU Subaru WRC STI from 37 900 EU VW GOLF R from 40 100 EU (btw VW Golf GTI from 29 893)
Vytautas .J I'd choose the Peugeot 308gti, best performance at the best price. i30n is a great price but slower and heavier. The rest are a ridiculous price
Bikerman 690 Australia civilised but germany isnt? These cars aren’t exactly civil either. An Australian policeman has a right to lie to your face in order to extract information from you.
Not really fair. Should have had all cars on not semi slick tires to compare performance. The RS with semi's can really add up seconds and seconds on a lap. :)
We tested the cars in the manor that you'd buy them from a dealer. Zero modifications and zero adjustments. We tried to make this as real world as possible. The RS Limited comes from the factory with the setup and tyres we tested here. Yes it had an obvious advantage but this was the fairest way to track test the cars as if you were to walk into any of the manufactures dealerships with $60k (or less), this is exactly as the cars would be delivered to you.
just to clarify, the RS had the RS2 package...which includes forged 19" wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires...which ARE NOT "semi slicks"....they are summer tires. Good ones.
Golf R. All wheel drive, higher quality interior styling, quicker and more fun in everyday use (only time the handling is noticeably more fun in a Type R/RS is at the track) and an exterior that’s both sporty and refined. Type R is too boyish and has questionable design features. RS is a great mix. Aggressive without being boyishly sporty, but unfortunately has a low-quality Ford interior.
Golf for me. But it’d be the GTI - don’t need the extra weight of the all wheel drive system and the R is front wheel drive most of the time anyway. Manual too. I don’t know how anyone can live with the RS when they have to look at it, inside or out.
'The French Car' as you all kept referring to it as is one of the best hot hatches on the market in Europe/UK etc. Also as a owner of the 308 GTi it's a fantastic car. Naff review.
I will say there is a small amount of bs here! That 308gti on track should be faster than that r type civic! But why give it so much shit, smallest engine and is shit on the wrx and i30n!!
If you know how to properly drive a manual, the 308 is simply the most rewarding car of them all. It has the most impressive engine, no doubt. It is the lightest. -And it should simply beat the Type R around tight tracks- That was the FK2 / 2015 Type R
Find a single review where the 308 gti can beat a Type R. Spoiler alert you won't find one, because they're different classes and most will not even compare them. While I like the 308 there is absolutely no reason to get mad about it being slower than a Type R or an RS. You're saying that you can drive faster than someone who gets paid to actually drive cars fast? I call bullshit gents. It's ok to like something...just don't stray into rabid fanboy territory. The Type R is faster around a track than even the RS in some comparisons (Evo comes to mind). Easily accessible information.
-The 308 GTi is quicker than the Type R around tight tracks. Easily accessible information, go look it up- Yes, I love the 308 GTi. I also love the Type R. Yes, I can drive a manual properly, and I am not a Peugeot fanboy. Yes, I like the brand a lot, but that also goes for Honda, Subaru, BMW, Ford, Land Rover, Jaguar, TVR, just to name a few. What I dislike is the constant, over the top love for anything Volkswagen AG related and the undeserved pissing on Peugeot. Oh, and I am not mad at all, I just don't understand why so called car enthousiasts don't appreciate the 308. It is the most nimble of them all and the engine is just straight impressive. That it can hang with cars that are in a higher league, both in price and brute power should be enough to at least like it. It has a counter-clockwise tachometer, so what. Aston Martin does that and nobody complains. And if you don't mind lowering the steering wheel a little or adjust your seat, you have a perfect view on all the instruments in front of you. A hot hatch is not a Lambo. You're not supposed to sit (or lie) with your ass on the ground and the steering wheel at shoulder level.
They must've forgotten to put that STI into Sport#, turn off traction control, and put manual differential into rear wheel bias. Only explanation for those numbers IMO 🤔 I am a little biased though.
I reckon cars like these should be manual, and although I feel Golfs are common and look dull, there is nothing dull or common how that DSG equipped Golf R launches off the line. But, I'd take the manual Focus cos it looks cool, it's fun to drive and its the only one that gets close to the Golf's acceleration. The other four are disappointing, especially the WRX considering it's the only proper full-time AWD. 6 odd secs to 100 and 14 odd secs to the quarter mile doesn't cut it anymore. The Hyundai, been the newest is the most disappointing. Anyway, great job guys and let's see how they all go on the streets.
Not surprising that 1.6 power to weight is hard to beat 200kw @1100kg. Subaru need to go bk to the drawing board and move away from the straight line box type design, follow the koreans and hire a bunch of germans for a new direction.
Golf R fans will go on about its 0-60 times and how they can win every traffic light grand prix. Type R fans will say they have the most exciting car for fast driving.
The torque figure for the i30N is incorrect
Where is the S3, RS3, M140i and A45 Amg? :/
All too expensive for this test.
CarAdvice.com agreed on A45 and RS3, but S3 is not that much more, and M140i is still a bargain of the century ... anyway
What about FWD Astra OPC 300HP 1.6l 2018??
Not sold in Oz
A.K Morris Ah you're right. It's mostly available in Europe
Wow the Peugeot only weighs 1178Kg!
RS280 will add depth when arrives - 308 GTI impressive however I do like all of them - aargh :)
I’m looking at the new Veloster N when it comes out here in the USA since we won’t get the I 30 N here. I have always been a Veloster fan boy, even with its non independent rear end of the old days. Can’t wait to drive the new one!!! Great test, thanks!!!
Is there no seat leon cupra in australia? I think it would be up there with the civic!
Correct, we don't have Seat
Havent watched much, but what country is this in? In US MSRP is ~$42k
Golf R i mean
Based on this video I think I need to get over my prejudice about its looks and go and test drive a Type R. I'm also really keen to visit my local Hyundai dealer once the N spec Veloster's start showing up Stateside. We don't get the i30 but the Veloster N has identical running gear and should be a similar driving experience.
All great little cars, and you couldn't go wrong with any of them.
didnt they say that the rs has semi slicks? so probably slower than type r with same rubber?
ford has slick?
nope....they are OEM Michelin PS2 summer tires. Not "semi slicks"
@@mattb3910 They are Pilot Sport Cup 2 which are track day tyres, and more aggressive than the ContiSportContact 6 on the Civic. I think the standard tyre on the Focus is the Pilot Super Sport which is equivalent to the Continental.
Golf R in DSG and everything else is a manual? Seems a bit unfair. Does the Golf R come in a manual?
It does but we were supplied with DSG
A.K Morris oh ok.
Love the comparison, this is truly excellent. However if he says confidence inspiring one more time ...
Put the Focus RS tyres on the Golf R and on paper it would be the best at everything .
The Focus RS is 1600kg... It's always going to struggle in braking, it's far too heavy.
Bmw M140i not there???
I know! It's faster than most of them too. Poor video
It was over our $60k criteria
It was over our $60k criteria@@darrenevans1852
Oh I apologise, your video must of been done before the 5k price cut. M140i is only now within 60k
Darren Evans which in my humble opinion is an absolute bargain for a hell of a car.
i went in a mates golf r recently, after a few launches and aggressive driving warning lights started popping up on the dash, pathetic.
The design of the cockpit means you can't see the tachometer? NEXT!
i30n has 353nm of torque not 453nm
Sure does. Well spotted, thank you. Too late to fix it, unfortunately - RUclips's a real prick like that. Sigh. - Mike S
Also wrong: 378 Nm (in 18 second overboost).
when i saw 453 nm i was like wtf , how. still 378 is impressive
What would happen to this test if the road got a little wet?
the Focus would win by a larger margin
What are the specs of the tires of each of the cars as tested?
They’re all standard fitment.
RS with semislicks? How's that fair?
It's how it comes as standard.
Owned an MK 7 R and now own an RS. The RS is just so much more fun to drive on any kind of twisty road. The R just feels clinical and a touch boring by comparison.
thillyard1 the RS is slower, plasticky and less clinical?
Golf R for Australia have less power 290KS, but normaly have 310.
dejan110782 Tune it!
Gotta get another driver in the i30n for sure. Already seen the i30n beat the golf R around the track. Do a search...
hiblendmedia same with the 308gti!!
Must have been a crap driver in the R
Sheldon Gannon and ive seen the i30N be totally obliterated by a 308 GTi on the track, like 3 seconds on a track with enough twisties on it (and it does this a good 95% of the time v the i30N). Remember the 308 GTi was not tuned on the ring like half the cars on test here, that tells you something ;)
hiblendmedia. A pussy was driving it.
Did you use same tyres in each car?
No. We tested the cars exactly as you'd buy them from the dealer. Zero modifications.
In real world Golf is way faster than everything else here. Anyway why would you spoil the test by bringing modified focus... or are these tires and diff available as options? If they are, it's ok.
Yes all available as options.
Actually in the LE the diff and tires are standard equipment.
@@robertyates6913
On the LE they are indeed standard, on the base RS they are an option.
Golf R 0-100 and 1/4 times :DDD
Focus RS...such a great car! And I'm not at all biased ;)
If stock definitely the Type R, short gearing, well set up chassis and looks ridiculous
If tune, Focus RS, as adding more power just means more torque vectoring led skids
i miss the cupra 300
Got a mk7 golf r awesome in race mode on the back roads great in eco doing the shopping and turns enough heads without shouting I'm fast to the thieves too much. Practical decent on fuel and quite cheap to run 👌

Jewish Blood Maybe time to get over ancient history?
Gaz Nelson It'd be cool if they gave the Golf R a few pops and bangs on gear change an overrun in race mode, just for a bit of fun and character.
schumifan78 race mode dsg it does blip the throttle when coming down the gears which sounds good and can hear some pops, they do respond well to modding so I'm sure you can get it perfected to how you want
@@mattb3910 They are Pilot Sport Cup 2 which are track day tyres.
@@TassieLorenzo for a rod course, they’re just ok tires. There is no such thing as “semi slicks”. “Slicks” reference drag racing tires. Semi slicks could mean drag radials I guess.. Which these are not. They’re what...200TW summer tires
Never really touched on the 0-100 where the Golf cleaned up..
How do we leave the Mercedes GLA 45 AMG out of this ?
Because it’s double the price.
I can't speak for all the cars but I know the i30N comes with a pretty hard compound tire. I can't remember where I read it but the michellin ps4 tires performed a fair bit better then stock.
The Performance Pack comes with bespoke Pirelli P Zero tyres. :)
@@TassieLorenzo they're a custom compound though made specifically for the N, pretty sure they went for longevity.
Where’s the m140i bmw🤔
Where is the Seat Leon Cupra??

Great Test I am excited for the Second Part because I think then it will get more interesting.
The problem here is that every car has a different rubber so the times are really not comparable.
All factory rubber.
(4) 200 kW - 308 GTi
(6) 202 kW - i30N performance
(5) 221 kW - WRX STI
(3) 228 kW - Golf R
(2) 235 kW - Type R
(1) 257 kW - Focus RS
I think the French with the smallest engine.
I just cant get past the look of the Honda , inside or out , deal breaker .
Amg a45 weighs 1600kg
a great comparison video, good job guys can't wait for part 2....👍👍👍
audi rs3?, bmw M140 ?
All too expensive for this comparison.
The bmw m140i is similar priced as the golf R
The audi s3 vs golf r vs amg A45 vs m140i vs the type r is the only hot hatch battle that matters
A car with semi slicks is always going to be bfaster than anything else. Geez, the tyres should've been same/similar setup for all. That Golf R though is in supercar territory with that performance. i30 N looks practical for a family and can hustle too. I'll bet its tyres let it down. I didn't notice a lateral grip test,
is that something that can be considered next time please?
Hi Malcom. We tested the cars as they come from the dealer to you. We consider this to be the most fair comparison. Ford fit the RS LE with super sticky rubber and it was fortunate for it that the weather was hot and very dry. If it had rained maybe the RS wouldn't have faired so well.
Honda civic type R is such a great car on track and daily use. And probably the more reliable.
The Type R actually has gear grind (including 4th and 5th gear lockout) and overheating issues.
pr0jectSkyneT there aren’t any overheating issues
Yes there are. Even Matt Farah experienced it 10 minutes into his track session.
Honda is not the best in term of reliability indeed, it's Lexus.
But my point is that Honda is way above all its competitors in this video which doesn't mean it has zero problem
;)
Alex Kid Honda is not Lexus my dude.... wtf you smoking?
The i30 N is not a car focused on top performance.
The focus is on the Daily Car at a reasonable price.
But it is the fastest car in an actual race with the same horsepower and weight.
Think of car prices.
They will also be the fastest cars if they focus on performance at high prices.
Tires can make a big difference ... just saying. Put the same tires on all the cars the outcome would be interesting .
Mate THANK YOU!!! I'm a huge fan of Henry so that's a hell of a compliment! And yes yes yes, I'd love to even see your K swapped DC2R!
No MK8 Fiesta ST?
Wasn't in Australia when we shot this and actually, it's still not in Australia yet.
A.K Morris oh, I see.
Disappointed with the STi, I would pick the Type R out of the cars tested but if the new Megane takes after the RS250, 265 and 275 these hot hatches don't stand a chance on the track.
The STi owns every single one of them on it's own terrain. Dirt roads. It is a raw, hard hitting, rally-bred, dirt road cannon.
How bout the megane RS ?
Not in Australia yet
Prices in my country: What you would choose for this price?
Hyundai I30N from 27 900 EU
Peugeot 308 GTi from 30 900 EU
Honda Civic Type R from 36 620 EU
Ford Focus RS from 37 712 EU
Subaru WRC STI from 37 900 EU
VW GOLF R from 40 100 EU (btw VW Golf GTI from 29 893)
Vytautas .J I'd choose the Peugeot 308gti, best performance at the best price. i30n is a great price but slower and heavier. The rest are a ridiculous price
The Dons i choose i30n other peugot because of design, i like hyundai more, but yea, i30n is slower but just a little bit :D
all of them awesome cars but Sti makes me smile. I have No regrets!.
Good job team. Truly enjoyed this.
Thanks!
Finally a decent comparison! Love it. Could have broken down the other stats aside from the lap time a little more. Damn that Golf R's acceleration!
We do in Part 2.
Fantastic! When is Part 2 coming out?
It's a secret!
These cars cant be driven hard on public roads in Australia unless youre willing to pay for state fund raisers.
Same goes for a Dacia Sandero. Any half decent modern car will exceed speed limits if your right foot tells it to.
Greg Mieg same goes for every... civilized country in the world I think, except some roads in Germany.
Then band together and do something about it.
TheDudeInTheRedHotHatch true that. But i dont need to invest more money in doing so.
Good ones.
I hope someone, someday will re-do all this test and include the Audi S1 old/2019
Where is the Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV!!!
Still getting out of the carpark or being repaired? hahahahaha
Mick Holgate...grow up!!!
Roger Gomes it was a joke, lighten up snowflake 😂😂
Mick Holgate no problem... next time no ridiculous jokes Savvy!
Not a fair comparison putting the rs, sti and the golf R in there
Why not?
I30n for me
just bought one :)
Nah.
No M140? No real world test
Del Johnson just about to say that
they re only testing cars under 60k
Ok. But the M140 is cheaper than a Golf r in the UK
Del Johnson Ok. But the M140 is not cheaper than a Golf r in Australia
In that case, get the M135i.
They must've forgotten to put that STI into Sport#, turn off traction control, and put manual differential into rear wheel bias. Only explanation for those numbers IMO 🤔 I am a little biased though.
The manual differential control doesn't dictate torque bias to the front or rear axle. It adjusts how open or closed the centre differential is.
You're correct; I meant auto -.
You should have waited for the Megan RS
We'd be waiting for months
nah, very unimpressive to be honest. Having driven one I was bitterly disappointed. It would be at the tail end of these.
Imagine a 1.6T with the big boys and beating a sti and and an I30n and just a second slower than a type R
Where is the Megane RS?
Wasn't available in Australia when we shot this. But, stay tuned ;)
They should have put a Renault clio V6 also.
140i?
Was over the $60k budget cap
1.6 outguns a 2.5. Subaru fans must be in tears. The Rex is no longer the ferocious dinosaur it once were.
Not surprising that 1.6 power to weight is hard to beat 200kw @1100kg.
Subaru need to go bk to the drawing board and move away from the straight line box type design, follow the koreans and hire a bunch of germans for a new direction.
Dinosaur is right... #extinct
Where is the Audi RS3???
Evolution X would skunked them all. Damn you Mitsubishi for getting rid of the legendary vehicle
What about an S3?
Over the $60k criteria
