    What's so terrible is that this could have been an amazing idea for the 30th Anniversary if WotC just hadn't gotten so greedy. If they had printed this into the ground and sold it at normal booster price, most players would have gone absolutely wild. People who have been playing the game since the beginning could relive some nostalgic drafts, and new players could get in some games and see just how good we have it today in terms of the power of cards being printed compared to what came out early on. Instead, Wizards burned everyone who isn't a sucker and flushed years of goodwill right down the drain.

      Agreed, it would be amazing in cube draft

      But then there would be thousands of black lotus out there and they would get sure by RL investment bros. Why do people keep saying this would have feasible? They should just never have printed it.

    • @bourgeoiscaesar
      @bourgeoiscaesar 2 года назад +1

      @@Redskies453 The getting sued thing is a myth. WotC never made any kind of contract with anyone, just a promise to speculators in order to maintain prices for them. They've reprinted Black Lotus in the past after making the reserve list, and they were pressured not to do it again, but there was no legal action. Plus, they just printed Black Lotus in 30th Anniversary. If they could be sued over it, they would be whether they printed one or one million. The idea that WotC has painted themselves into some kind of legal corner is pure speculation started by the investors who just care about their pretty cardboard being less valuable.

    • @Redskies453
      @Redskies453 2 года назад

      @@bourgeoiscaesar There is certainly debate, but nobody really know the possible outcome of a lawsuit based on promissory estoppel as there is not much precedent. In any case it's not the act of reprinting that is relevant, but the resulting loss of value. This is why they kept the price high. A small number of reprints is unlikely to move prices, especially if they are not tournament legal, so they can get away with it. A large reprint would be more risky.

    Too add, when CE/ICE came out, it was an entire set for $49.99. 30th anniversary is really a big f-ing slap in the face...

    Really entertaining summary, thanks. Had not heard the full story. Ridiculous, I even own some of the cards from later sets, so there are already some cheap proxies.
    Minor nitpick: They probably don't hire staff every time they need to write lore. They have most likely already hired them and continue to pay them, but used them for other products.

    The people who work on this project are so tone deaf and so out of touch with the magic player they should all be fired

    "We knew we had to do something,really really special. So what we did, we put together all the promises we made, took all the aspects of collector confidence in our game and we put together a product that is worthy of spitting on 30 years of magic that is inspired by the corporate greed that has been running rampant in our company for the past 3 years. And we made this collectible, commemorative, backstabbing, amazingly greedy, incredibly disingenuous new product that we're calling 'Reserved list, the reprinting anniversary' "
    I fixed the opening Subtiltes for you there. LMAO

    I know in the old days WotC did not own the art and had to pay royalties to use the art. Do we know if the rights became public domain for those images? Or they had to pay royalties to the artists? That is the only thing I can think of that would bring the cost to produce the product up.
    That being said; it would have been better for the players if this were just a complete set, like CE.

    If they charged $1000 for 4 ACTUAL Alpha/Beta packs, I doubt they would have had any issues.

      While I don't have the exact print numbers for this product Wizards sent only 1 copy of Magic: The gathering 30th anniversary edition to WPN stores and 3 to premium WPN stores with none being shipped to brick and mortar stores like Walmart or Target. With only 4 packs a box that's a scarce amount of cards hitting the market compared to an average set and wizards apparently "sold out" of Magic: The gathering 30th anniversary edition online within 40 minutes, illustrating that there was not a lot of this product to begin with or perhaps Wizards shut down the store due to backlash either way this product only seems to be readily available on the secondary market with scalpers asking for extremely high prices.

    As a strictly causal player I still insist people play with real cards that they own.

    Oh it's a celebration all right. Not of 30 years of MTG, no no no, it is far more important (to corporate) to celebrate 3 years of record breaking profits... courtesy of Hasbro. Gee... thanks!

    If it were a box of 36 booster to make draft or sealed experience for 500 to 1000 $ , yes 👍 whit some random lotteries cards representing the 30th anniversary of mtg . They will had made a mountain of money... sad 😢

    Clearly magic 30 along with three years of massive product releases was done on purpose to have everyone not only hate reprints but to gain the sympathy of players old and new towards the continuation of the reserve list. And wizards has won on all fronts. Slowly wizards was doing these physiological games all along but have ramped up full steam ahead. They wanted the players to say that they hate reprints and they have won. A division in the ranks of magic players exists just like having two major political parties with Rudy clearly being on the right but trying to act like a neutral party. This game sucks. You know it sucks when you miss out on things and the company goes well f you why weren’t u born when the game was around. Or you can just buy one from their collection at an inflated price.

    boohoo cash grab fomo too expensive for 99% of players only limited run 😭
    i dont get it... so what if the target sales audience is collectors/investors? all of us fuckin nerds are still gonna play cause we love the game, and this print has literally 0 impact on us (with the exception of maybe some collectors who maybe lost money on old RL cards) if you want to buy it, gotta shell out the big bux just like everyone else. and if you dont want it, dont buy it. its not like youre missing out on literally anything - like you said you can buy tournament legal versions for cheaper, you can proxy yourself for even cheaper, and WotC can cash in on this product and get the bag so they can keep pumping out sets for us. seems like a completely victimless offense, with the exception of entitled cry babies who feel they deserve this product at a highly reduced price just because they play the game 😂
    Edit: Wanted to say props for such a well put together and comprehensive video!

    So sad to say, but I hate mtg now. Was my favorite game for 20 years. I used to buy tons of box's, collectors stuff, almost everything. I played daily and have a gigantic collection worth thousands. Now I don't play at all. The main reason is because it isn't FUN. Who wants a game that's just frustrating and annoying? So sad. Actually makes me f*cking pissed off.
