I have a strange hope. Expansion of power and wealth is a given. I think instability and recession is also a given. What I'm curious about is how the rich who rely on US consumption will respond to instability. Some rich will be able to loot a burning country, but some will lose their consumers and fare poorly. I genuinely think conflict between the rich who need consumers and the rich who want to loot a corpse is going to be the closest thing Americans have to protection.

Starting to manufacture those imports in the USA would require building a very significant number of production units. Even assuming that investors and industrialists would agree to do so, very simply, very basically, it takes time to build a factory and launch its production, imports will not be offset at a snapshot. And when investors consider the creation of a new production line, their plans in terms of profitabiliy go well beyond the four years of a presidential term; if it's not profitable in the long run they won't invest. In addition, if borrowing money becomes more expensive, that will not help.
The manufacturing was deliberately move abroad to take advantage of cheap labour. Bringing it back to the USA with higher salaries will make products as expensive or more than foreign goods with tariffs.
It does not work like that. The US (as with the UK) makes and sells goods in their home market. Many things are made and sold in the home market that compete with imported goods. Sofas, many building products, tyres, all sorts. The change will be the home manufacturer that is already there will do better and sell a bit more while the volume of imported goods will fall. I is the same as Brexit. While we do not have tariffs, the friction of the new border has a similar effect. Imports from the EU are down by 23%, did we just decide to not buy all that stuff or are buyers switching to UK made stuff. If you were a buyer in B & Q would you now favour UK made goods that you know will arrive on time and not be stuck in the docks for a week?
In the US, we don't have the production capacity to replace all of the stuff in one fell swoop. It's going to mean chaos for several years, especially with more expensive oil.
@@grolfe3210 B&Q don't tend to sell stuff made in the EU. The stuff there is generally made in the UK (building supplies) or china (tools, light fittings etc.). Stuff made in the EU is generally high quality and expensive, and not the kind of things you'll find at your local B&Q. I recently bought a set of winter tyres (Pirelli, made in Italy) from Germany. It tooks 3 weeks to deliver, the last time i ordered it took 3 days. It was very annoying. There is no UK equivalent, nor will there ever be, at least not as long as our Governments declare war on cars and motorists. Car and van manufacturers are shutting down in the UK due to muddled policies. They need to start treating industry properly rather than a hobby. I bought a British made sofa from Loaf. It cost 4 times as much as an Ikea Mexican made "equivalent". I can't see this becoming the purchasing decision of the masses any time soon.
@@robertdewar1752 Broadly speaking (and not getting embroiled in one-off purchases, we did have lots of French made materials from LaFarge, I bought cement, plasterboard and blocks that were all from France. When I look now, I hardly see anything from France and it all seems to be UK supplied. It is just common sense for buyers in shops to now favour UK sourced goods over EU given the uncertainties of importing. You started with they cannot build the factories and now are on other fantasies like the UK goods cost 4 time as much. The fact is that UK imports from the EU are down 24%. Now did we just stop buying that stuff or is it perhaps sourced more from the UK. The fact that UK unemployment is about half the rate of France for example rather supports what I am saying.
All that fracking and drilling is mostly for oil the US can't use. It's light oil, and the refineries can't use it. The pipe lines aren't near it, so it must be trucked to be exported. You know whose oil is exactly what the US was set up to refine. I'll give you 2 guesses. Not only that, but the US gets a sweetheart deal on Canadian oil because we didn't build enough refining capacity. It was cheaper to send it to Texas refineries at a cut rate and buy back the refined petroleum products we needed at market prices. Tariffs on Canadian oil would be like catching a tiger by the tail. On one hand, you caught a tiger, but on the other hand, the tiger will eat your face. The Koch company imports tones of Canadian potash to make fertilizer. Canada has 40% of the world's potash. The US has less than 9%. The US is the leading exporter of fertilizer to the world. The Koch company will be forced to pass the price increase on to domestic farmers and export customers. Export customers may have other choices for fertilizer. Russia has the second largest potash reserves, and believe me Asians don't give a fart where fertilizer comes from. As long as it's cheap. Plus, soft wood lumber on Canadian crown land is cheaper than lumber on private US land. Canadian Crown land and lumber deals are set up to cover the costs, not make a substantial profit. Not only will the import tariffs hurt the US consumer, but Canada could also tax those resource exports, increasing their cost even further and may still be cheaper than off shore imports or domestic lumber and heavy oil. Catching a tiger by the tail is a seriously bad idea. If Trump continues to pick fights with friends on America's behalf, you know what America will have less of? Friends. America isn't great all by itself because it says so. It takes friends to amplify what you're saying and help back it up. Trump is helping its enemies drive a wedge between America and its friends. Maybe NATO allies don't join you the next time you get attacked or help out with China like the US wants. You're not a good friend if you spend more time fighting us than Iran.
It's not only the lumber and oil from Canada but most of the north east gets it's Hydro electricity from Quebec out of the James Bay dam I guess most Americans don't realize it's the importers that pay the Tariffs not the exporters so get ready for higher prices on everything
If China tried to invade.main kand America it wouldn't end well.We are armed to the teeth and Canadians aren't they would most likely invade Canada 1st.Yall are easiest to invade
3:39 Funny thing about american oil is, they do produce enough to be self sufficient except most of the oil from fracking can't be refined in the existing refiners (last refinery is built in the late 70s, fracking boom started in the 2000s), so they export that oil and import oil that is suitable to their oil refineries. Also not every oil is good for fuel, there are types of oil that are better for lubricants and other petrochemical products. That's why i always chuckle when american politician talk about energy independence when they want to increase oil exploration in those regions.
Thumbs up. Subscribed. Good presentation. Very clearly stated. What you are saying makes sense to me, i.e., it's correct, at least according to what I've learned about tariffs since I began reading about them. I'm not yet sure how this is going to affect my situation (I'm 77, living on low fixed income from SS and VA), but I've been preparing for several months now by saving as much money and stocking up on as much other stuff as I can in anticipation of prices increasing. I don't drive, so increasing gas prices won't be a problem. But if food prices increase drastically, then that could be a problem.

It is silly to speak of both as if they were equally problematic. It is a little ironic. Here in Quebec, they have complained about the number of illegal immigrants coming across the border at "Roxham Road" which you can look up on wikipedia. The other side of this tariff escalation is that countries like Mexico , Canada and China will feel great pressure to impose retaliatory tariffs of their own on exported American products. This will increase the price of American exports making it harder to sell those products. This actually happened during the first Trump term with American farmers.

@justathought9591 I believe there have been some crossings, but my understanding is that the number accounts for a tiny fraction of the crossings at the mexican border - maybe 1 or 2%. Here in Quebec, they have complained about the number of illegal immigrants coming across the border at "Roxham Road" which you can look up on wikipedia.

That sounds like a good idea. Could you share some details about your financial advisor? How can I get in touch with her?
Her name is. Melissa Terri Swayne’. Just research the name. You’d find necessary details to work with a correspondence to set up an appointment.
I just googled her and I'm really impressed with her credentials; I reached out to her since I need all the assistance I can get. I just scheduled a caII.
the US gets almost all of it's pulp from Canada..........and what gets made from pulp you ask? all kinds of paper products........
And look how much paper is wasted.....
oh , you can use your toilet paper cash to wipe your butt , US known for its capability to print toilet paper
That means toilet paper shortage again ?
25% percent isn't enough. I'd double it to compensate all the unemployed Americans collecting social welfare benefits. Americans will be paying the real prices for once.
Canadian lumber prices will harm home building but trump doesn't realize or care.
Someone tell trump that Titanic is not a submarine 😂😂😂😂
tRump's get out of Jail Free card is going to be extremely expensive.
The USA depends completely from other countries!!!
We can only hope that he's lying about this, since he lies about everything!
:-)
The top 1% don't care what happens to the bottom 99%. So tariff it is!
Turning our friends across the northern and southern border into our economic enemies would be a huge economic and strategic mistake mistake. And this would be aiding our strategic enemies in China and Russia. Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress need to stand up against Trump on this issue.
Its why people voted trump ? fed up with endless more of the same however bad it gets . Its what happens when media fails to educate . There is already mayhem imo .
The Americans who voted on Trump must be uneducated or just stupid if they believed the exporting country would pay the tax/tariff ... the tax/tariff is to be payed by the importing company and consequently the Americans will be charged the tax/tariff!
"What's the worst that can happen?" is a question best answered _before_ you push the button
Yes, they voted away their 'more of the same' in favour of 'exponentially worse'.
The EU Single Market does the same thing.
@@physiocrat7143 just checked, can't see the EU torching it's own supply chains with macho posturing
You'll have to explain that equivalence to me please!
Thank you for for explaining everything
Everybody's fleeing Twitter to Bluesky !!!
I have been telling people, that Trump is not who you think he is
You never know how good you have it until you mess around. This coming days soon in the future people will die trying to survive for bread! Symbolic terms as you take it. I feel sorry for the young people who are already suffering and struggling! It’s a pride before a fall.
Nah . .. Americans are rich...such small increases are just a scratch on the palm...They voted for the price increase. They get what they want...
Americans are already up to their necks in debt.
Trump is just not the person to be in the position of president. The USA is going to suffer.
MAGgA
"America declares a trade war, but blames trade partners for the war"
The only times it does not blame its trade partners is when it gains substantially from them
It's all in the language. "We will impose 25% tariffs on Canada" Vs "We will force US consumers to pay 25% extra to the federal government on their purchase from Canada"
Once upon a time when I used to go grocery shopping things that I used to spend a couple hundred dollars for the price is double double because of inflation so I can just imagine what these new tariff on imported goods be it’s gonna bedevastated.
Better take those wealthy tax cuts and give that money back in monthly stimulus checks to the real American people!
I predict a 'Truss' type event 😂
Inshallah
Way worse!
Except Truss could be gotten rid of.
Majority of the agricultural goods imported to the US comes directly from Mexico and Canada. He plans to deport majority of the farm workers currently working in the US too so unless the US is able to magically get people who are used to working in air-conditioned buildings with good pay to go work in fields farming for very little pay we're going to experience a food shortage crisis and the food that is available being so expensive that people cannot afford it.
on the bright side, US obesity problem should be getting solved and, as a byproduct, lower the need for healthcare on obesity related issues
The other side of this tariff escalation is that countries like Mexico , Canada and China will feel great pressure to impose retaliatory tariffs of their own on exported American products. This will increase the price of American exports making it harder to sell those products. This actually happened during the first Trump term with American farmers.
The Trumpsters will still blame Biden by him listening to Obama in his basement command center 😂
Tip: Move to another country while the currency still has some value 😂
😂
