I was always fascinated by frequency counters in the late 80's, but as you say they were so bloody expensive to buy i never had one. I may just invest in one of these for such a low price.

They are ok but I but if you're serious about electronics then a decent counter by racal Dana or similar is best, & they're getting quite cheap now

FYI the uTuber "theHWcave" has a very good video on these.. well worth the watch.. has some partial ccts of the units. Plus mods like adding a resistor in parallel to one resistor in the TCXO cct to allow trimmer to be more centered..and a second major mod re the separation of combined input into 2 separate inputs, one for the low range and other for the high range
He also discusses reading accuracy issues

Thanks for that i will check out his channel sometime. Personally i wouldn't bother to modify it as in my application I've only used it to display frequency in old analogue tuners. Its more than good enough for that as it is. I wouldn't want to use it as my only frequency counter although it work fine if that's all you can afford & you can't beat it for the price! When I think back to the first counter I built 40 years ago it must have cost at least 10 times as much!

That's really cool! I've seen these and have thought about it, but having several freq counters already...but now seeing how interesting they are...I'll be adding one to my collection. :) I have been trying to learn about prescalers...wondering if you could input a low freq from a function generator and output a much higher freq...need to buy some to experiment...if that worked, it would be a cheap way of having a better function generator. Regards mate. ~Jack, VEG

Can't do that with a prescaler they only take a high freq signal & divide it down to a lower freq, if you need to create a higher frequency then you need to use a vco & some fairly complicated circuitry! Cheers

Greetings: Your camera is focusing on the peripheral image outside your intended focus point. Place something large to block the camera from seeing around your focus point.

That was an old video done on a cell phone, I'm using a proper camera now

does someone know what the other variable pots are on the board?

There is another utuber TheHWCAVE that has a good video that discusses the pots plus a few other critical improvement.

Do you have any problem with those overheating when running?

Never had a problem with overheating, of course I usually run them close to the lowest brightness setting as find them too bright otherwise, that may be a factor
