    One of the most handy calibers I've used is the 22 mag. I have made friends in the ranching community thinning out the varmints. Yotes, fox , and bobcats are easy prey. About the only animal in Texas that I have not killed with the 22 mag are Hogs. I could easily survive with a little scoped, bolt action 22 mag. The 5.7X28 was quite a bit faster than the .22 Mag so passed straight through and only surrendered a small portion of its energy , it dumped the rest into the ground behind and made a large dust cloud whilst also throwing up large amounts of dirt . The .22 Mag lost more velocity in the clay so lost more energy and thus made a bigger hole but still hit the ground behind and threw up less dirt the the 5.7 . The .17 HMR looked like it might have been a ballistic tip hollow point ? , but it dumped All its energy into the clay so made a whopping great hole in it and didn't have enough energy left to get to the back . .22 LR should never be underestimated , though it didn't expand each round made it all the way through and still made a nasty mess. The 17hmr is a fast bullet. 200 yards and closer it just fragments. You shoot a milk gallon jug full of water at 200 yards and less it just blows the front out. However if you shoot a milk jug full of water at 400 yards the round is than moving slow enough to go straight through the jug front and back. Left a nice bb hole through it front and back.

    • @A407RAC
      @A407RAC 2 года назад +4

      To be fair it didn't do "more" damage, the 5.7x28 just had so much more energy / velocity that it flew straight through. The .22WMR (which I love) was going slower, so the block ended up taking much more of the energy, hence a larger hole.

      @driverjamescopeland Год назад +1

      I wouldn't put too much stock into this comparison. The 5.7 cartridge he used, had a tapered tip FMJ projectile. They're designed more for penetration than energy transfer. Not much opportunity for drama in a small clay block. I was actually impressed by how much energy it retained in such a short barrel, AND operating that particular gas return system. The .22mag had a blunt nose projectile, which lends a little more energy transfer. The ballistic tip .17 did, as you said, "expected". A projectile that small/light, with a ballistic tip, guaranteed the energy transfer. The 5.7x28 would've done much better with SS197 and a bit more distance to let it slow down. Assuming the .22HMR was a typical 40 grain projectile, velocities are similar (~2,000fps)... but the .22 projectile has a bit better design for putting holes in clay.

    The 17hmr cartridge did exactly what it was designed to do. Fragment on impact and not to penetrate. A more fair assessment of the 17 hmr would have been to use a 20 game point type of bullet rather than the Polly tipped type. Also I do believe that these comparisons should be done at realistic hunting ranges such as 100yds which would give a more realistic assessment of the capabilities of these calibres which is what we really need to know. My own finding from years of hunting is that I prefer 17 hmr over 22 mag over a variety of ranges.

    Been following you and paul over the last several weeks doing the clay block test. I think these are way more interesting than the ballistic gel because that wound channel doesn't close back up. It just stays suspended where it is, unless the blast more than compromises the center, then it just collapses. I got one for you on this medium. My two favorite rifle rounds. The trick is to put red clay inside the guy and heads. We also had fun results with shaving cream mixed with red food dye.

    If you want to get better results here is an idea: 1) use similar type bullets ( not an exact option with the 22LR) 2) Use ballistic gel . Clay gives impresive results but is not realistic at all . 3) Find muzzle velocity from your guns to help you compare the results better. I believe the
    5x28 from that short barrel looses plenty of speed.
