This is real life, this is how people in the military really look like, they’re just regular people, they aren’t all tall, buff, and handsome or beautiful, and extremely well-spoken like they are in the movies. It’s just regular people like any other industry in human society, except the only difference is they’re required to do physical training and weapons training and qualify with their weapons.

@13ghosts18 I served too, USMC infantry. Our Drill Instructors ARE the people you say only exist in movies. And ny no means is the weapons training in the military (speaking of marksmanship outside of snipers) even adequate. Most Army and Marines get taught barely enough to survive combat, and you'd be hard pressed to find any that could make it out of a gunfight situation without a platoon backing them and a full compliment of supporting arms at their disposal.

@@chrisbelsito4231Former Navy E-6 (2013 - 2021) here, tell him good luck. The Nuclear course is one of the toughest mentally. A lot of people drop out. Tell him that he needs to pass, because his life will not be so great if he fails. Failures get sent to random jobs in the Navy, usually not the good ones, and most certainly not the ones that build skills for the civilian side.
Also, no real way to sugar coat this, but being a nuclear tech in the Navy is already a tough job. It's probably one of the worst, because of how overworked they are. So tell him that he needs to be thinking about his future, and that he should think about what that may look like outside the Navy, because it could be quite possible that he will not want to serve any more time past his initial contract. Especially knowing that enlisted nuclear techs get enough schooling to be only a few credits away from an actual bachelor's of science in nuclear engineering, there's almost no incentive for a Naval nuclear technician to remain enlisted past their initial 6 year contract.
His initial goal is to make it past boot camp. Do everything they tell him, keep his head down, keep quiet and indulge everything. Then, his following goal is to pass his nuclear schooling, which will take about two years and will be incredibly tough mentally. After that, his goal will be to survive, and figure out what he wants to do next, whether that be staying in the Navy or leaving. No shame in leaving, especially as a nuclear tech. If he decides to stay, his two main goals should be to effectively use BAH to buy income properties (apartments or homes to rent) and to become an officer and retire with a big pension.

For real. I went through this shit a few months ago. I had a senior chief as my leading RDC. We were terrified of him in boot camp, but we still respected him because he was stern and strict, but fair, and that's the kind of leader you want. As for what happened in basic, dude threw a chair across the room because he got so mad at us. It sounds childish, but in boot camp, you're terrified because if the RDC gets mad, they take their anger out on the recruits. Thankfully, he didn't take pleasure in watching us suffer like one of my other RDCs (still hate her to this day)

Needless to say, we graduated no flags, and no common sense of brotherhood.

@chriss2452 It means they went through boot camp and graduated. That's the only thing that matters, nothing else with maybe one exception - that being dishonerable discharge after completing boot camp. They can go on to enlist as infantry, work for homeland security, be stationed abroad, have an MO even as low hazard as a court clerk or whatever, but it's possible that a dishonorable discharge in any case would disqualify their marine status. But to be clear, if someone receives an honorable discharge before completing boot camp, they are not a marine.

I remember my drill Sgt saying "I have 3 months to prepare you to go to war, I do not have enough time" that always stayed with me

So i have like 5 Marines in my immediate family so i know how hard the boot camp is.
My friend was all over facebook recently bragging cause her 18 year old son enlisted and was going to Paris Island to be a Marine.
I looked at him and thought “oh boy”
A month or 2 so goes by with no updates, then she posts a picture of her son in a Sailors uniform saying he’s graduated from Navy bootcamp or whatever.
I felt so bad but couldn’t help but chuckle. Poor kid must have dropped out like his second day based on the timeline of when he left for Paris Island and then graduated Navy Bootcamp.
I blame the Marine Recruiter, theres no way he realistically thought this kid could do it. I’ve seen all kinds of people I grew up with that went to boot camp and became Marines that you never thought would make it, but this kid was the only one ive ever seen quit.

I am as well. First half of the 13 wks, I honestly thought I wasn't gonna hack it. Went in over 340lbs. Red stripes above n below like the fat body squad. I remember distinctly what one of my DI's said. Ironically, he was visiting the recruiting office n pushed for his cycle. "Rodgers, you came from a strong family foundation and see great things for you! Why throw it all away? You're HALFWAY through and have impressed me by far above everyone else!!! What is your next move???" Something fucking clicked!! "I WANNA BE A MARINE, SSGT!!!!!" Good, now pick your ass up and show me you want it!" Lost over 130lbs n found a renewed pride in myself that stands to this very day. Thank you.

@@davidrodgers9382 nice man. My brother told me he had one kid in his class drop out and the DIs laid into him. Said it went something like
“Your daddy’s probably on a boat right now with his buddies fishing, bragging about how his sons in boot camp and gonna be a Marine.”
Now he’s gonna have to explain to all his buddies that you pussed out and couldn’t do it!
He said the poor kid just lost it and curled up in the fetal position and started crying and obviously dropped out

I had no idea that quitting was an option?

@@johnwilliamson2276it’s an option all the way until you’re at MCT or SOI. Still from there you can get dropped as a failure to adapt all the way until you hit one year in the fleet. I actually think it’s a good system and I think that having the option to quit ensures that you have better quality people that actually want to be there.

Dec 03 made 30 years for me, the time is a blur, What tickles me is most of the commentors knocking the Navy BootCamp have no idea the Male RDC is a Combat Veteran and a SeaBee... they have no clue what either on means.

Except I don't think I would like to be blown up in Iraq again. I could definitely do without the lifelong limp.
