An American in Bulgaria

  • I recently traveled from Atlanta, GA to Sofia, Bulgaria (and all over the country) to visit my boyfriend's family and experience a new culture. It was an amazing trip, and I loved every minute of it. The Bulgarian food, culture, music, nature, and people impressed me more than I could ever have imagined.
PS. Any Bulgarians who might watch this: if you know of ANY reliable source for me to learn and become fluent in Bulgarian, please let me know. I will be eternally grateful. :)

Very good video and very well edited! I'm glad you had a good time! As for learning Bulgarian, I would suggest (though I haven't used it, the "Colloquial" series is reputed to be good) the book "Colloquial Bulgarian" which you can get with or without an audio supplement. There aren't many websites or such digital materials for learning Bulgarian. If you are at a more advanced level, I recommend the "Intensive Bulgarian" series which I have used as a reference grammar although it's rather dry.

I think Bulgaria is beautiful! The nature, the culture, and the people.... my boyfriend's family welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home. :) I don't know where my life will take me in the future, but if it takes me to Bulgaria, I will welcome the opportunity to live there.

Thank you! :) It was a wonderful trip. When did you start learning Bulgarian (or are you a native speaker with a thorough knowledge for Bulgarian language resources?)? It is extremely difficult (maybe impossible) to find an actual Bulgarian language class here in the states, so I think I might try that Colloquial Bulgarian book (I am definitely a beginner!). Thanks so much for the tips!

Thank you! If you have any advice or tips about learning Bulgarian, please share! I'm struggling because I prefer a classroom setting, but I am trying to do it on my own!

I'm a native speaker and you're right, there aren't many classes here in the states at all...I only know of some resources because they are a part of a language learning series...The "Intensive Bulgarian" was just meant to be a reference to have to check up on grammatical details

Hey! If you are going to Sofia, there are things that everyone will tell you to see, like the NPC, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, St. George Rotunda, St. Nedelya Church, Nationa Theater, etc. If you get the chance to travel outside of Sofia, you should! Veliko Tarnovo and Balchik were my favorite places. It is a beautiful country with a rich culture and wonderful people. Enjoy your trip! :)

I agree that English is a difficult and complicated language! Bulgarian is, too, but I do enjoy learning about it when I can. I have a book that I am using- it helps with vocabulary and some grammar! I would still prefer a classroom experience though!

I think you will face a lot of troubles to do it by your self without a teacher. It is a hard and very different language from English. Maybe it will be confusing and difficult at first. How well do you know it in the first place? Can you do simple talks?
