Harley made a great bike here. This engine is amazing. It's got its quirks (software glitches) but its foundations are solid. Its well-engineered, technologically advanced, and fun. Fun. Real fun. This is a good thing, and I'm glad to see H-D doing it. It's long overdue and they should be applauded.
Hey Brian. I don't think I can add much more to your comment. You nailed it! Thanks so much for your comment. I appreciate your support for the channel!
Thanks for the video Ty! And for your defense of the Sportster S! Yes, indeed, I get sideways glances from "Real Harley Riders"... but you know, to each his own...it truly IS a blast to ride, and I've rode a few (4) different brands over the years... but this one is, without a doubt, the most exciting bike I've thrown my leg over, so they can say what they want!
Honestly, who the fuck cares? The “real Harley riders” are people I would never want to be associated with anyways. If you love the bike, more power to you my man! Life is too short to give a damn what anyone else thinks. I just bought one of these sportsters and I can’t wait to hit the road on it
I love this bike. I really keep thinking I want one. Im so glad to see the company offer up some new bikes that really has capture non-harley and young riders. Ive seen so many videos of people getting gapped light to light by the sportster S and the first comment is "Thats a HARLEY!?" Its a break away from just tradition and brand loyalty and a real jump at performance. We needed this bike!
Hey there! If you get a chance be sure and take one for a test ride. I bet you will love it. Such a fun bike!! Thanks so much for your comment. I appreciate your support for the channel!

Ty, first and foremost, thanks for another great video. I started following your channel SPECIFICALLY for your Sportster S content because I'm deciding between that, a Honda Rebel 1100, an Indian Scout Bobber, or a Triumph Bobber. The Sportster S "not being a real Harley" is EXACTLY why it's on my list of consideration because friends of mine that I rode with in the past that had Harleys had problems that made me say NEVER to their brand. Now that they're making something that a metric rider like me would take notice to is a good thing because I'm not the only one looking at this bike and I've known others that have watched your videos to help them decide on their next bike too. Keep up the great work. It's really appreciated.
Hey Enrico! I’m glad that you have found my videos helpful. I appreciate you very much! The Sportster S has been a fantastic motorcycle so far. I really enjoy ripping around on it. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!!
Enrico, all good bikes you named in your choices…but before you make a final decision, go to your local HD and test ride a Lowrider S, this model is in a whole different level and although not a liquid-cooled bike, it may just make you a believer in the “new” traditional Harley styled bikes. No offense intended for the Sportster S, it’s a fast and nice bike…. But once you get to ride that Lowrider S, it just does something to your soul, give it a try you’ll see.
Let the haters hate they’re just jealous. I’m jealous I don’t own one ☝️. Who cares what it’s called it is what it is. That’s pretty cool it has all of those different modes. I’d be in sport mode lol 😂. The only thing I don’t like is that exhaust! Nice personal review Ty
I love my air cooled Harleys, but like it or not the Revolution Max is the future of Harley-Davidson. The Sportster S is the next generation of Sportster and that's the way it is. It won't be long before we see a large displacement liquid cooled Twin in a bagger.
That really gets me excited! I would love to see a bagger with the RevMax!! Thanks so much for your comment. I appreciate your support for the channel!
Hello, beautiful bike. I sat on one 2day at the dealership. I'm about 5' 7" and am looking for my first bike. I want something that I can flat foot and I was able to on the S. One thing that surprised me was that it felt lighter then some other bikes that I have been looking at, so that also attracted me. I was able to lift it from the stand to center easier then other bikes. So far, the 2 bikes that I like the most is the Sportster S and Bonneville Bobber. Cant decide between them yet. I love the fat tires on the S and the fact that even when its standing still, it looks like it's in motion. Decisions, decisions, ha.
Both of those choices are great. I think the Sportster S could be a great first bike but I would exercise some self discipline for sure. Thanks for watching Jay!
Great video! I own the Nightster and I get many of these same comments. It had its bugs in the beginning (defective handlebar modules caused a no start issue). I do get many looks from air cooled Harley bikes. 😂 This bike puts a smile on my each time that I ride it with no problems! Maintenance is easy except for replacing the spark plugs as the cylinder heads has to be removed to gain access to the spark plugs-Hopefully iridium plugs will available soon as this is a 2.25 hour repair job. 😂
Hi Michael! All that matters is if you are happy with the motorcycle. I think H-D is doing an awesome job with the RevMax platform and I can't wait to see what they do next! Thanks for watching and have a great day!
Nice video. I think it´s the same like Harley Davidson bring out the V-Rod for years. Many say that´s no Harley, but now erverybody would like to have one. Harley Davidson must go with time. Sorry for my englisch. I´m waiting for my new sportster S kind regards from Germany
I remember when no one liked the Evo motor when it came out. The joke back then was "how do you bury an Evo in a race? With a Shovel. I rode my Shovelhead for 24 years before getting my new Sportster S. Glad I moved into Harleys future.
Hi John. I'm really glad to hear that you love your Sportster S. I'm a huge fan of the motorcycle. Thank you very much for watching! I appreciate your time today!
First of all this is a really good video. I say they (HD) are heading in the right direction with the Sportster. If they don't keep up with technology then they will miss out on a market that the competition is capturing. You are absolutely correct...Harley can name any bike what they choose to name it. People cried and complaint about the the Pan America, but its a veery nice bike. So who cares what they named it, Like you said...they are listening to the customer and bringing in new riders.👍👍👍
Yes sir! Great points and I really appreciate your feedback. So far the Sportster s has been a fantastic bike for me. Looking forward to the summer time miles. Thanks for watching!!
Ride with a mate on a bike behind you. My mate with his H2R carbon that cost nearly twice as much as my bike hates my Sportster S because it turns heads while his perfect blend of track/road bike only gets a look in from people that know the particular bike. The announcement video for the Sportster S said it best, that this does bring it back to the origins. It is a versatile platform built for speed and performance. Anyone that has looked at my bike up close loves the muscular body on it. All engine with two wheels and an exhaust pipe. In human terms it is like a 5'2" heavy weight boxer. You know it when you see it.
Great comment! I do notice the looks while I am out on the Sportster S and if I pull up at my local dealership it is definitely a "head turner". I appreciate your time today and thanks for watching!
Hi Brent! Harley is going some good things now. Looking forward to what they will roll out next. Thanks so much for your comment. I appreciate your support for the channel!
My respect for making this video. I also don’t like this kind of sportster, just like I never liked the VROD. They are not like the traditional Harley’s but that is my personal opinion. People must ride what they like and as long as they are happy with it, it’s all good. Enjoy your bike!
Great video Ty, as always. I think the major reason why people make these false claims, etc. is because it doesn't fit into their "box" or category. Therefore because they don't understand or know the new tech that wen't into this, they ignorantly form deductions and such that are quite frankly straight up bs and not factual as you note. Ty for your videos. I have had a myriad of bikes such as but not limited to BMW 1250 RT, Sport Bikes, V Rod Muscle's, Road Glides, Street Glides, from CVO to specials and I LOVE MY SPORTSER S!
Great perspective Brian. I think you are exactly right on what you said. I love the new tech that H-D is implementing. The Sportster S sure is a fun bike to ride. Thanks for watching!!
I've never hated any HD, but some models certainly do not appeal to me, and the Sporty S is one which does not appeal to me. It's just not a styling I like to look at, sadly. I love the Rev Max motor and all the tech though, I'd just prefer they put it into a more "traditional" looking Sporty, that's all! 😎
Your bike is far better in performance and convenience when compared to other Harleys bike but what I think lacks is Harley-Davidson support. Even the new Nightster 975T has more accessories and parts from Harley-Davidson right from go. Even the aftermarket is very slow cause of Harley-Davidson record of pulling back early on some of the rev platform bikes.
I know. I so wish there was more aftermarket parts. That is a bummer for sure and some of the wait time is crazy! Thanks for watching. I appreciate your support for the channel!
@@TyFromTennessee I have found Kodalin has introduced a lowering kit( 1 inch lowering linkage). If there is a good aftermarket rear shocks that can get you an inch more travel ( from OEM 2 inch to 3 inch)then by using the shock in conjunction with the 1 inch lower kit you can keep the bikes stance OEM plus add an additional inch of travel to rear shock. Regarding the exhaust I have seen reviews in which people install TBR but then heat insulation is inadequate with the aftermarket TBR. It’s better to stick with OEM( if Harley-Davidson provide a full black muffler I think that bike will look even better) . I appreciate Harley-Davidson for adding options for pillion. Revolution engines from Harley-Davidson are good 👍. It is going to be the next most reliable engine winning over Evo engines reliability credentials. I hope Harley-Davidson keeps it electronics in check.
Great video as usual Ty. I love my Sportster S and, in my opinion, it is one of the nicest bikes Harley has ever produced. Every time I ride it I like it more and more. Call me crazy but I for one love the look of the upswept exhaust system. Looks like a modern flat track race bike and this thing is scary fast. I hardly ever use 6th gear unless I'm on the highway which is hardly ever. Around town running errands and just joy riding on the rural back roads in PA this bike rocks. I did put the mid controls on mine and love the way I can hug the tank and flick this thing around the curves. Let the haters hate to each his own but I for one appreciate ALL Harleys for what they are.
Hey Randall. It really is such a great bike. I don't mind the look of the exhaust either. Most people hate it, but I think it flows with the bike. My plan is to wait and change out the exhaust, but I'm holding out a little while longer to see what aftermarket parts will be available. Thanks for watching!
Hey Ty, I love my 21 S. I have 4K on mine so far. The performance is breathtaking but I’ve had numerous mechanical issues with mine since I purchased it in dec. Turn signal went out Constantly can’t switch between modes The speedo went out and HD had to fly an engineer to CA, it was out for over 3 1/2 weeks then. And now with it already being out of my hands for over a week, the whole engine is shot. They want to send a new engine over and install on my bike. Idc what they do I, just want my bike back. With so many defects with the one I bought, why wouldn’t they just toss me a new one? Can you work your magic and tell them Hank in Ca said to hurry up and get me my bike back. Have you had any mechanical issues with yours? Thanks Ty. S rules!
Ah man. Hank, I hate hearing about that. I know it would drive me crazy too! So far I’ve not had any issues with mine other than a dead battery. Now I keep the motorcycle on a battery tender. I sure hope everything gets repaired for you soon. I appreciate your time and thanks for watching!!
Ty, great video, i am 50 years old, riding HD for 30 plis years and all O can say is i do not like the look of the S and the sound, but, new is here and until i actually ride an S I can tell better, in the end is a HD it is a Sportster and you look like having fun on it, so, chin up and get this videos going my friend!!!
@@TyFromTennessee I have ben on two demo rides already and I absolutely love it. I wonder if it's possible to put some luggage on it. I like to do some trips with some camping (hammock) during the summer.
Love the videos Ty. You helped convince me to buy a Sportster S!. Quick question, what phone mount do you use, and have you had to worry about vibrations hurting the camera? Looks like a quadlock? Thanks for the videos!
Hey Ryan! I hope you are enjoying your Sportster S! Yes, I’m using the QuadLock. I have it on my Street Glide too. It’s a great product. Thanks for watching. I appreciate your time!!
Hey Ty, I totally agree with you. HD should move on to a new direction instead of indulging in their past legacy and old fans. BTW, why did you remove the windshield on your bike? It looks cool though.
Me too. I like the direction that H-D is going. I’ve still got my windshield on there. I haven’t removed it. It looks great on the bike. Thanks for watching!!
Saying the sportster s doesn’t have a Harley engine is honestly funny. They’re right as far as getting that traditional Harley sound, but Harley had the revolution engines back in 08 lol, they collaborated with Porsche to make the motor, and it’s the next evolution in their sportster models. Those people who don’t like it, don’t have have to buy it. Don’t be afraid of change, it’s necessary, especially in the motor industry.
I do not like a few things about the bike. The biggest complaint I have is the bike is so small. I do not like the rdrs or ride modes. I want full control of the bike I ride. I do not want the computer taking over. On the positive side it looks like it should be much better in the curves than the old sportster. It seems like a refined version of the sportster. Sportsters have traditionaly been bikes to raise hell on.
Yeah. This bike sure is fun on the twistys. I understand your perspective. Many people don’t like the tech on their motorcycle and I’m ok with that. Thank you very much for watching. Be safe out there.
It is the same with when the VROD came out. My friend had 3 and still has one. They are a hoot to ride. I sat on the sportster S and I just dont fit right. Now imagine if you can get the 1250 Rev max flashed to get the Pan Am power out of it Yeehaw. It is the same with the Pan AM and now the nightster. HD has to move forward. As EPA regulations change over the world they have to conform or go out of business its that simple. Also lets face it the “that ain’t a real HD crowd” is getting older. It is funny that you did this video as I had something similar running through my head on a recent video but I edited it out. I think it is a huge disservice to the the people at HD that are trying their best to push the company forward. Let’s face it, if they didn’t make the Pan America i would never have bought a Harley Davidson. So I would say they made a successful motorcycle. They got a non Harley Davidson guy to buy a bike. Now they are coming out with the 975cc platform I personally can’t wait to see what they do with it. Great topic Ty, I may steal some ideas from an outsider prospective.
I am so glad to here that you are loving your new PanAm. The RevMax engine is most certainly a game changer. You can use any ideas of mine that you want to! Go for it! Have a great day and I'll see you soon!
All is well...17 bikes.. 81,91 Sturgis.a Vrod..3 sportsters . the livewire and 4 buells mixed in this collection ...all Harley's..all good...the Bronx Will most likely be the next!
Hey Thomas. Oh man, I would love to see that Bronx out on the street. Good stuff. Thanks so much for your comment. I appreciate your support for the channel!
With all due respect, you might understand the criticisms better if you understood the mechanics of the motors and how they differ. I gotta say that while i don't hate the new Sportster S, and i won't load judgment on it until i ride one, the fact that it isn't an air-cooled, 45° v-twin with just one crankshaft connecting rod makes it look, feel, and sound "wrong" to me. The fact that the look off the bike, overall, is divergent enough from classic Sportsters is something i cannot ignore, either. I see your point, as far as the whole concept of "a Sportster is whatever the H-D Motor Co says it is... " I'm not sure i truly agree with that, but i can concede that point. However, i gotta counter with the idea that even H-D calls the new bikes "RH," instead of "XL." Every Sportster from 1957 until 2021 has been an XL, and the RH bikes are obviously way different... I think the RH1250S and RH975 are more descendents of the VRSC line than they are of the XL. Better ergos than the VRSC, for sure, but the goofy forward controls as standard are another commonality. So, yeah, at the end of the day, don't conflate the idea that the new Sportster S isn't a "real Sportster" with hate... Some of us are just very aware of what we perceived to be significant differences and, as fans of the XL/XLH bikes, we're a bit bummed that their era is drawing to an end.
Hey Rob. I understand what you’re saying and I think you have made some valid points that are well thought out. Thanks for teaching me a thing or two with your comment. Much appreciated and thank you for watching!
different strokes for different folks so to speak, there not my cup of tea but if others like them and it helps HD to reach more riders then great, aint no different than the disagreement between batwing and shark nose, i think a lot of it is just good ol smack talk, but im sure there are real haters out there.
Oh yeah. There are some real haters out there and they tell me all about it from time to time. Hahaha. Thanks for watching. I appreciate your time today!
A lot of manufacturers do that, they make a product with a very popular name, then just run it into the ground. Even when the new product and the original have nothing in common. I would think companies would show creativity and come up with a new name to have a new, original hit. But what do I know and who cares, right? Hahaha.
People need to do their homework before making statements about Sportster S not being a Sportster. If you look at the Sportster lineage you will see body work that references the '21 design. Here are some examples, even as far back as 1958 XLCH, 1970's XR750 and the 2008 XR1200 have very similar lines. Look at the XR1200!!!
My Sportster S is the 7th HD I have owned and has sat in my garage alongside my Road King Special since January of this year. I have not touched my King at all. Love my Sportster S. Couldn't care less for the haters. I just smile at them and let them know that my stock Sportster will smoke their Dyna/Softail/tourer that they have poured thousands into. Fuck em...
I'm not sure why other people's uninformed comments bother you. My first HD was a 1988 1200 Sportster, the first of the 1200 Evo Sportsters. The Pan Head crowd said Evos sucked, weren't real HDs. Sportsters were girls hikes and so on. I can honestly say I didn't care. Fast forward, the 1200 Evo is HDs longest running engines. I don't know of any manufacturer that has made a motor that long. And you said it best, HD gets to determine what a Sportster is, not someone that is butt hurt and can't afford one anyway. Enjoy your bike, stop worrying what other people say. I briefly had a 1250S, I traded it for a Pan America. The suspension needs about 2 more inches of travel and it needs at least another gallon of fuel. Outside of that it's a great running and fun bike. If you get tired of your seat let me know, I have a Corbin ill sell you cheap.
Hey Bruce! I appreciate your feedback on this. I can understand that the Sportster S isn’t for everyone but I sure do love the bike. How much for the seat? Please email me at tyncooper@gmail.com
Ty I enjoy your videos very accurate. I have finally been putting some miles on mine here in Ohio and it's a fun bike.O yeah I have gotten mixed reactions friend can't stand it as he has one of the older ones. This guy likes my big Indian Challenger which is water cooled etc.Cudos to HD though people like me and others watching what they doin.I sure like the ST street glide So they are appealing to different riders.keep it up Ty
Hi James. You’re right and I Unser that the Sportster S isn’t for everyone but it sure is a fun bike to take out and rip around. I really appreciate your time. Thank you very much for watching!!
The main reason this bike exists is because the air cooled engines can no longer meet the emissions standards. HD's other engines, the "big twins" or whatever you want to call them, will also become water cooled in the next couple of years. Unit construction (engine and transmission cast together) is many times better, cheaper to build, cheaper to maintain AND performs much better, lighter and simpler than non-unit construction. The water-cooled engine also allows more performance, engine life and reliability than an air cooled engine simply because a water cooled engine has a more consistent operating temperature. HD needed a real modern engine design for all the above reasons because their "core market" that demands their "classic" 1940's pushrod engines is getting too old to ride and they need to appeal to a younger rider that demands more reliable, more tech, more performance, than the old design allowed.
Let's get it right; the Evolution and even the Ironhead are unit construction, as well. Some ppl refer to it as "semi-unit construction," but that's one of the main design differences between the Sportster Evos and the Big Twin 1340 Evos...
Hi George. Very well put. I’m glad to see HD make this change. The RevMax engine is a pretty impressive motor in my opinion. Thanks for watching buddy.
Ass for every seat. My bike is the best. Still I like anything with a engine. Car's truck's bikes boats. Chainsaw. New sportster is interesting. Hope a lot of tech head's, or young people try it out.
I rode 2 different v-rods for 11 years including winning Gainesville Street Bike Track championship 3 years. All the while the old Harley guys insisted it wasn't a 'real harley'. I love Sportsters and V-rods, this is the best of both worlds. Check some of my old videos on youtube/dansasmith2816

Hi Brent! Harley is going some good things now. Looking forward to what they will roll out next. Thanks so much for your comment. I appreciate your support for the channel!
Well done and well said my friend. I'm a 30 yr rider. Harley oil in my blood. The sportster s is a fine machine. My friend just picked his up today.
Hi Jason. I appreciate the kind words. Tell your friend I said congratulations and point him to the channel please. Take care and ride safe!!
I have told him about your page, and videos on the sportster s. Good luck with your channel .
@@mooses-n-gooses9712 Thank you.
Do you find the seat to be adequate? After sitting on one briefly, I felt that maybe a upgraded seat would be better in the long run.
I’ve got the Sundowner seat on mine and it made a huge difference. I highly recommend!!
My respect for making this video. I also don’t like this kind of sportster, just like I never liked the VROD. They are not like the traditional Harley’s but that is my personal opinion. People must ride what they like and as long as they are happy with it, it’s all good. Enjoy your bike!
Hello Mr Les! I totally agree with you and I can appreciate your perspective. Thank you very much for watching! I appreciate your time today!
@@TyFromTennessee thanks so much for making these incredible videos which are down to earth and very informative!
I totally understand that. There are lots of flavors of motorcycles out there for us all. I appreciate your time today. Thanks for watching!
I like the sporter s more than the sportser nightster though I would drop the exhaust down and ditch that molded tail. Good vid man!
Thank you Ben! It's not for everyone, but that's ok. It's a super fun bike to ride. Thanks for watching buddy!
Turn signal went out
Constantly can’t switch between modes
The speedo went out and HD had to fly an engineer to CA, it was out for over 3 1/2 weeks then.
If now a days people can decide what ever they want to be true and not be challenged of course manufactures can make desicions and not be challenged.
Thank you very much! It’s not for everyone but I really do enjoy this motorcycle! Thank you very much for watching!
Nice video Ty! I think the Sportster S is a step in the right direction. For the first time, a Sportster is a bike I actually want.
It's a great bike and so much fun to ride. Take a demo ride if you get a chance. Thank you for watching today!!
Great points, especially about the Evo motor with Porsche. I appreciate your feedback very much and thank you for watching!
There was just as much hate that HD didn’t have any new technology as there is hate now that HD is rolling out new tech!
So true Greg. Some people you just can't please! hahah. Thank you very much for watching! I appreciate your time today!
Great video Ty, enjoy them all.
Thanks Dana! I appreciate that very much. I hope you are subscribed! Have a great day!!
People will always be jerks. I think the bike is awesome. So as long as you enjoy it, don't give a **** what others say.
Keep at it!
That’s exactly right my friend. Thanks for your time today.
I’ve had mine 5 days and every time I park it I can’t wait to get back on
I know the feeling Tony! I'm hoping for a full day of riding this weekend! Thank you very much for watching!
Hahaha.
Lots of options for HD on this one. The bike is exceptional! Thanks for watching buddy.
This is the future!! My green baby just arrived 🤓🤤🤤🤤 evolve or die!!
Love it! Congratulations. That is a beautiful color for the Sportster S!! Have fun and be safe!!
Looks like a nice bike to me.
Thanks Larry. It sure it a lot of fun to ride!
Great video!
Thanks Kevin!
06:14 Exactly
Thank you sir. I appreciate that very much! Ride safe!
Sporters S is one of the best design I've seen period I don't need to explain we have our own taste maybe what's best for them is ugly for me.
So far it has been a fantastic motorcycle! I sure hope you like yours. Have a great day and thanks for watching!
I appreciate your time very much! Thanks so much for your comment. I appreciate your support for the channel!
I have Harley I love the bike
Hate the dealers and the support they have is shit
My Sportster S is the 7th HD I have owned and has sat in my garage alongside my Road King Special since January of this year. I have not touched my King at all. Love my Sportster S. Couldn't care less for the haters. I just smile at them and let them know that my stock Sportster will smoke their Dyna/Softail/tourer that they have poured thousands into. Fuck em...
hahahah! The Sportster S is such a great bike. I'm extremely happy with mine. Thank you very much for watching! I appreciate your time today!
This guy likes my big Indian Challenger which is water cooled etc.Cudos to HD though people like me and others watching what they doin.I sure like the ST street glide
So they are appealing to different riders.keep it up Ty
Hi James. You’re right and I Unser that the Sportster S isn’t for everyone but it sure is a fun bike to take out and rip around. I really appreciate your time. Thank you very much for watching!!
You think they could have made the exhaust any bigger?😂🤣
All part of making it meet the emissions standards.
It’s not for everyone, that’s for sure. Hahah.
I call it the Hipster.
Hey Brent. Yeah, I can see that...Thanks for watching!
Ass for every seat. My bike is the best. Still I like anything with a engine. Car's truck's bikes boats. Chainsaw. New sportster is interesting. Hope a lot of tech head's, or young people try it out.
"chainsaw" hahaha. Thanks Ray! I hope you are doing well. Thank you very much for watching!!
World is full of posers, and people that actually identify with a brand as if it really makes them who they are. I mean, really.
Thanks for watching! The Sportster S has been a fantastic motorcycle for me.
Hey Dana! Very cool! I will most definitely check out your channel! Thank you very much for watching! I appreciate your time today!
