- Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car. And a voice was screaming, "holy Jesus, what are these goddamn animals!?" No point in mentioning these bats, I thought. The poor bastard will see them soon enough.

When a writing assignment lands journalist Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and sidekick Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) in Las Vegas, they decide to make it the ultimate business trip. But before long, business is forgotten and trip has become the key word. Fueled by a suitcase full of mind-bending pharmaceuticals, Duke and Gonzo set off on a fast and furious ride through nonstop neon, surreal surroundings and a crew of the craziest characters ever (including cameo appearances by Cameron Diaz, Christina Ricci, Gary Busey and many others). But no matter where misadventure leads them, Duke and Gonzo discover that sometimes going too far is the only way to go.

"He's a foreigner, I think he's probably Somoan, doesn't matter though does it...are YOU prejudiced?"
"Hell no."
"I didn't think so. Because in spite of his race this man is extrememly valuable."
“We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.
Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.”
I've always wanted to know what the fuck a screamer is 😂

Poot dat cheet aghwaighy Dabee, are yoo crasssssseeeee jajajaja
Keep in mind this movie is a fairly dark take on the book. If at all interested, you should read it. The book while mostly fictional, is IMHO possibly one of the most important comments on American mid 60s through early 70s "counter" culture (or whatever you want to call it).
If your just watching this movie and/or just using it as yet another excuse to get high, then your missing the point.
RIP Hunter.
You thought u did something with this comment huh

@@NightFlight1973 k, but, have you ever done mushrooms or acid
@@jacobtalksalot4817 He's definitely right. Although if he's insinuating that the movie doesn't do a great job of exploring/revealing some of the themes of the book (like the delusions of the American Dream and the politics of the 60's/70's) he'd be wrong because it does an excellent job. Obviously doesn't quite reach the levels of the book but that's almost impossible. But especially the last line, that being that if you watch this movie just because it looks cool and has drugs in it and take nothing away, then you'd compleeeetely be missing the point.
Right, because the point of cinema is to educate first. Whether or not you were entertained doesn't even enter the equation.
"If you were only entertained by a movie from Hollywood, then you missed the point."
Lmfao.

Can’t believe they made the scene from Rango into a whole movie
Haha
Rango is one of the trippiest movies i’ve ever watched tripping not even gonna lie. Clocktower scene had me seeing shapes and everything
They even adapted it into an entire novel later, by the same name!
Ummmm.... wasn't Rango years later?
because they are both johnny depp's movie
“It’s okay, just admiring the shape of your skull” gets me every time 😂
Lol cause that's not some sereal killer shit
I love, "How about some ether?"
"What?"
"Never mind"
Raoul Duke: Are you prejudiced?
Hitchhiker: Hell no.
Raoul Duke: I didn't think so. Because in spite of his race, this man is extremely valuable to me.
That line cracks me up every time. That is the most serial killer thing you can say to someone besides “your face would make a nice mask”
I can't believe Spiderman and Hunter S Thompson once took a car ride together.
Must be part of the multiverse; it would explain the psychedelic visuals in a lot of the movies lol
I read the book at least every year and it's incredible, Johnny Depp actually paid for Hunter S Thompson's funeral after his death. If anyone doesn't know Hunter wanted his ashes to be put into a cannon and shot into the desert. Depp fulfilled his wishes and paid for everything. This shows how much Thompson meant to Johnny and what a beautiful jester for Johnny.
Wait what
@@MW-gb7fe hunter served as Johnny depps mentor. This movie is based off a book by hunter s Thompson under the same name.
@@MW-gb7fe Johnny Depp and Hunter Thompson lived together for a few months (due to the movie) and became close friends as a result.

*Gesture. Jester is a medieval entertainer, a clown. Jesus Christ this country is f*cked.
the way you can tell almost all of depp’s lines are clearly dubbed over adds to the fever dream of this incredible movie
@@mattzx003 He wasn't talking about the narration. Some of Depp's dialogue was dubbed over in post-production. This happens in movies for a variety of reasons.

That is very accurate when tripping on acid or shrooms.
I love the random Tobey Maguire cameo in this scene. Obviously years before he became a household name as the first (and best in my opinion) modern day Spider-Man for Marvel. He still looks almost the same to me.
not really a cameo if he was an up and coming actor tho was it..
He was in movies years before this
Ha ha ha, Spider Man 🕷 and Jack Sparrow 🏴☠️? 🤣 lol nice.
thats not a cameo hes a character in the book, read a book. please.
Oh shit I never noticed
Never thought I would see Tobey Maguire with long blonde hair, lol.
If I remember correctly, it's actually a wig for most shots.
Does anyone realize the guy they take is stoner Peter Parker
Yep. Parker in the early days, before he became a news photographer & got bitten by the radioactive spider...
Multi multi verse
Yes we all realized that years ago, and in fact we realized that Spiderman was in fact that crazy hitchhiker instead.
Yes lmao

One of my favorite movie secens EVER!! At 16 my BF sold LSD and we had some good times with this movie in the background. I still know every single word. We'd say something about "bat country" as a kind of safe word if we wanted to leave a party or the vibe was bad.
I hope everyone realizes that's Toby McGuire in the back seat.
yo bat country is a dope safe word you mind if I steal that?
Haha wow I never realized that was toby that’s amazing
Honestly from a teenager perspective that’s seems like an awesome time
@@vikingraider8061 He's BatM.. wait.. Spiderman... this is spider country..

Yes We Did That Rango & Bat Country Already.
My early 20’s were kinda like this. I’m 51 now and somehow I’m still alive. I’ve been pretty clean and not really sober for over 20 years. There’s a decade of my life that was a blur of foggy memories and paranoid motivations. I would say thank god i survived but honestly I think the guy I was, was replaced with me in the present tense and the old guy is roasting in hell somewhere. Pretty much just a device reset and a new firmware install. Jesus, Hunter would dig that train of thought. His damned attorney would freak out and I’d be forced to choke the bastard out. Well, unless he wasn’t already in a bathtub holding a radio above the water. I gotta go, this is bat country!😎
crazy thing is if you read the book, the movie is pretty much word for word by the book. Every memorable phrase in the movie comes directly from the book. fun fact Johnny Depp is also wearing a lot of Hunter's old clothes from that time period in the movie and had stayed with Hunter for months prior to filming, digging through all hunters old recordings, writings and other stuff from the era. When Hunter died Johnny paid 3 million dollars to have Hunters ashes shot out of a giant 150 ft tall gonzo fist which was exactly how Hunter wanted his funeral to be. nobody couldve embodied Hunter better. Bill Murray tried first in Where the Buffalo Roam, but Bill is Bill, physically he's not much like Hunter and character wise he is always himself. Johnny had the look and truly became Hunter for the role. I know Johnny is in the movie but I can only see Hunter s Thompson when watching it.
We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.
I remember saying something like, "I feel a bit light-headed. Maybe you should drive."
Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us. And the sky was full of what looked like huge bats. All swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was and a voice was screaming, "Holy Jesus, what are these goddamn animals!?"
“In spite of his race, this man is extremely valuable” lmao
I've been meaning to see this movie forever but the toby McGuire appearance sealed the deal
Then a chamaleon with a smily face lands on the windshield
"Here's another one!"
The smiley face breaks apart revealing an awkward reptile face
"I knew it..."
Benecio del Toro was excellent in the movie Traffic, however I still lose it every time when he gets to, "One toke over the line sweet Jesus, one toke over the liiiiiine..." in this movie. (Pouring beer on his chest to facilitate the tanning process)
our human principles are what drives us to help eachother, even while being high we don't forget that, hence why he helped the hitchhiker and why we still decide to do good things even while being high, it's amazing how they captured that and why i love this movie so goddamn much
Doesn't he pull a knife on him soon after this

Love this movie!!
wanted to give this movie a chance, but I couldn't make it past the first 20 minutes it was so bad to me. The dialogue is so strange and there is no plot. In my opinion, don't waste your time.
In the book, they were simultaneously listening to “sympathy for the devil” on the tape deck (over and over on repeat), while also blasting the radio at full volume. XD
so this poor kid’s ears were just getting assaulted by a hellish barrage of two different songs playing at the same time, the engine roaring, and high winds as they drove along, all while Hunter babbled incoherently at him. Lol.
