    I utilized your guiding principles this am. Went bit further off shore, which really helped. The swell was better, with rollers moving along. Tried to stay primarily on the “downhill”, which kept me on foil for over a km!🌊🏄‍♂️😊
    You refer to fetch being the most important. Not sure what you’re referring to with fetch. Thanks again! Your content & tips tremendously helpful.

      @downwind_drifter  3 месяца назад

      Sounds, excellent!
      By fetch I mean the distance in which the bumps have had time to build.
      If you’re sitting in the middle of a 50km lake there’s 25km of fetch/water all around you.
      If you’re just off the edge of the lake say 1km and heading back in there is 49km of fetch for the bumps to build. If the wind was coming from the nearest edge it would only be 1km of fetch and very small tight bumps
      Bigger fetch brings more established swells
      Smaller fetch brings tighter wind bumps
      I’m stoked for you 🤙🤙

      Thank you! That makes sense, & helps explain the big wave days here. There’s ~ 80km of open water from 🇨🇦 shoreline to New York State 🇺🇸. I’ll study Tristan Gooley’s book “How to Read water”🧐

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  3 месяца назад

      @@drbfitk366 I did a bit of bro study on water and waves when trying to learn things, it helped expand my thinking.
      The other easy rule of thumb is small fetch waves/bumps drop off incredibly fast if the wind backs off! Almost instantly.
      Longer fetch bumps linger on for longer, and the longer it’s been blowing the longer they tend to linger.
      So if it’s a short fetch day and the wind is a bit fluky/erratic I’ll tend to not bother… if it’s from a long fetch direction I’ll stay interested knowing there’s more chance of something rideable.
      🤙🤙

    Best one so far. Great mahi. The drone footage is so good, well done Alison. It shows the bumps really well. What would be great would be either a drone video compilation or a session primarily dedicated to successful paddle ups showing the bumps you let pass, how you braced etc after them & the ones you chose to paddle into. I appreciate a session dedicated to paddle ups may be a bit much physically but a compilation would be awesome.

      I have a lot of footage of failed paddle ups… about 7 in a row and quick succession just yesterday, before finally getting going.
      As if Downwinding wasn’t hard enough… adding in a drone and time limit is pretty stressful 😅 still it makes normal sessions that much more easier.

      @@downwind_drifter Yep I can fully appreciate that. I'm just back from a lightwind session (on Dylans old beaten up PNG1300 setup😆) & used your techniques to hunt down the valleys ahead of me to foil into. With the rate of development happening so fast by different companies, I think within a few months the parawing phenomenon will end up being the quickest & easiest method into downwinding.

      I’m yet to try one of those wings… the problem for me is, if it’s too easy then it’s not fun… I no longer wing as there is too much assistance and no challenge. I have the same feeling when towing in waves or bumps.
      I need to earn my achievement, this likely isn’t the same for everyone though. I see a lot of guys frothing on the foildrive who could be using passive equipment.
      I’ll likely move into those activities though when they become a challenge due to me struggling, likely with age or injury.

      @@downwind_drifter today was too light for real bumps so it was a practice for when the conditions cooperate. You are lucky with your location to have as many options with launching and beaching. Unfortunately in a lot of places the terrain makes it difficult/ dangerous to learn to downwind. That's where something like the parawing excells. I don't think it's all about being an easy option. At the end of the day if we're on the ocean tapping into its energy it's all pretty Zen

      @@downwind_drifter found a good spot! And great drone pilot too Alison 😉
      Firstly, waiting for that right moment to go hard out to get on foil. It’s pumping/paddling smart not hard? I had comments that I don’t put in much effort but why waste energy if the right bump yet to come? Although on a wing board but reckon I know what you mean re feeling a pitch then there’s bound to be the right one behind.
      Secondly, longevity of gears and human. Gotta keep the hardware and software working and in sync.
      Maybe lastly, long arms help to keep the wing dry during deflate? 😂
      Every session out there is a new learning experience reading the bumps staying on foil for as long as possible. I’ll keep doing more on the wing then one day put that to use when I do get my hands on some dw paddle gears.
      Any advice on ankles strengthening? Mine was burning after 15min straight dw wing. Wobbled off after that gybing to cut back in and switch over. On dw paddle there’s no such “luxury”.

      Thanks mate 🤑
      Are you asking what conditions I’ll use the 1401 and 1201 in?
      The 1401 is easy to sum up for me as it’s my go to if things look at all iffy. It’s my bottom end foil. I’ll pair it with my smallest stab if things are extremely light as this is the most efficient foil to go with it. It requires some finesse but it rewards you with more efficiency, equalling glide between energy and fast acceleration.
      If conditions are a step above that say 14kts ocean 16kts bay run with around 4-6km fetch I’ll size up the stab ti slow the system down a touch… this helps keep the big front foil from surging to speeds that become uncomfortable… and keeps the setup feeling more playful.
      At that stage I’m also considering the 1201. If conditions are supposed to stay as they are or increase I’d be seriously considering using the 1201 from there or the 1180 in bay run conditions.
      But if conditions are iffy and could decrease I’ll go with the 1401 as it is still fun and it is the best foil to get me home if things turn for the worst.
      Having the bigger foil - 1401 also means I can get away with a smaller board or carry more gear… it’s a good touring foil if you’re looking at a long run… you could even put an extra stab in your pack for the added range 😅
      🤙🤙

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  4 месяца назад

      16kts ocean I’m likely just putting on the 1201 with something like the 40 skinny but also considering the 1180 by then too.
      At 20kts ocean I’m considering sizing down further.

Providing insights & sharing your knowhow on harnessing the ocean wave power, so helpful for anyone undertaking this sport. Would your oracle skill in selecting optimal pathways to follow in ocean swell apply for a Great Lake setting? I'm learning downwinding in Lake Ontario 🇨🇦 Which is deep, ~300km long, & 85km wide. It's doesn't have the constant ocean type swell, but regularly has 2-3 ft fast moving swell, & significant wind chop, making it difficult to read sometimes.

      @@1rovingeye 7-8kts with the 1401 but I’m using all the tricks in the book to get going and then it’s a slog and survival riding, I’m not likely making much upwind progress if any.
      10kts im getting up without tricks by just building forward speed, but then im likely to realise it’s going to take a while to get up wind 😅 but I’ll do it.
      11kts it’s straight forward but feeling light still.
      12kts for me is regular flying and anything over is easy.
      I have a lot of experience and use my sup downwind abilities to get it going in the lightest winds… using chops/swell and pumping to get going.

      Winter is coming soon so I am thinking about how to progress next season. I have a 1401 but will get an 1180 or hope Axis will release a larger Spitfire for this 95kg heavyweight. I am on a lake and find the 1401 very difficult in the short spaced waves - when we get 12-15knots of wind the sets are 1.5m high and 12 to 15 feet apart. Although I can easily SUP in this it's a little spicy for a beginner DWer. I'm riding a KT Surf 8'4 and is amazing stable in 2+m conditions. Regardless I think should be looking at a wing or parawing than is greater than 2.9m.

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  3 месяца назад +1

      @@JasonKadlec it’s often a 2 to 1 ratio but can easily be 3-1… it will come down to gear and experience.
      45mins of upwind for 10mins downwind is actually likely not a bad case in a lot of ways! That would tell me that someone might have managed to get 4km directly up wind and then packed down and sent it! on the way downwind averaging 2:30 per km with a fast paddle up!
      But more likely winging 4km straight up wind doing 2-6 tacks might take 20mins? And then surfing downwind 4km is often 12mins at 3min kms but if you don’t get on foil 4km can take 1hr.
      The deflates are a great tool if you want to get out and can’t arrange a car shuffle, but actually beyond that they are very good for fitting in lots of shorter runs for practise or testing setups.
