"a stable freeride platform" that sentence right there encouraged me to buy a new starboard carve 135l board, now waiting for it to arrive. for real that helped me understand that my jump from a Starboard go windsurfer 175l to a Starboard futura 122l was too big, and probably that is why I've been struggling to progress. I ate my pride, put the money out and bought me something hopefully more suitable and fun. Thank you Cookie for this 🤙🙏
Great choice of board, I use a 133~ carve a lot of the time. Make sure you read the descriptions for elaborations on each skill when you watch them- 60seconds is short- Chances are the words that go with it will answer some questions you’ll have.
Great series. I like your approach of stripping the typical issues most windsurfers are facing and then showing the solution, which is often just a shift of weight or a twist of your body. Really great. Regarding tactics: in gusty, partly underpowered conditions I use the underpowered time to get extra meters upwind instead of crushing them in useless attempts to getting the board planing. Best, Claus.
Thanks Claus! 👍 Definitely agree with your tactics of Underpowered upwind… pretty sure we’ve talked about that in one of my videos. I’ll back on the water soon and will continue these series! 👌
Very informative and enjoyable video, thank you. I noticed at 11:43 the guy to the right windsurfing appears to have his arms wide. I'm guessing from his board and sail he is at an intermediate level? He needs to watch this video!
I'm not into Windsurf (just other water sports) but I really like your teaching style mate! I would not hesitate getting some lessons with you. You might get me to try this one day!! :D cheers
I've learnt so much from your videos. Planning to come to Greece in 2022 after a year of only 4 outings on the water so far. Looking forward to progress and have fun!
Insightful video! I would love to visit Greece some time. That combo of 5.0 and 146 sounds like a dream for cruising around. I took a 104l free race board that I paired up with a 4.8 meter free wave type sail. At 25 knots I was flying. That was at Lake Neusiedl in Austria. What I would give to do the same in Greece or Spain... :)
Thanks for another great video I’ll be trying these tips when I go out tomorrow. I’m jealous of the flat water in your shots. Can you do a video on windsurfing in waves or rather big chop?
Hey, could you make a video about how to fall more safely while planing or going fast? Some tips or principles would be cool, since there aren’t many videos about this.
Hi! Thanks for watching! Tough subject… maybe instead of thing “how to fall/crash” we think along the lines of “to to stop crashing”…. How to stop catapulting! ruclips.net/video/dpAvn6GGvqU/видео.html
Hi Cookie - thx for all of your footage. Suggestion : importance of clew first course (e.g. to come out of gybes). I'm on North Sea with a lot of chop and shore break so clew first is essential to control balance and keep the planing.. cheers!
Thanks again Cookie for a great video that nicely summarizes a lot of your previous tips and addressed most of my questions/feedback, I posted previously (much appreciated 👍) A trip to meet you in Vassi is on my bucket list!
Excellent video, some very good things to think about in this video......I like these sessions you do which covers more than just one aspect, good to see how one thing can have an effect on other things......
Push through the toes of the front foot! Join my patron page if you can... I do a number of "walk-Along" sessions where I talk through it a little more! Thanks
Could you do a video on gybing in heavy chop? I have never seen a youtube vide on on this topic, and I think it's something that plagues most windsurfers. Most gybe "how to" videos I see are done in flat (or flat-ISH) water. This would help me so much!
I also noted this too, but in actual fact, theres no difference in the technique in any sea state, I find you just have to make a decision on how much you need to compromise/change things up to make a gybe in heavy chop. Most of my sailing is in heavy chop, Im always using a much tighter arc, coming out slower, almost off the plane than you might see in a "perfect world" demonstration, but this is what you have to do to make a decent gybe in those conditions. If you try and use too much speed, too wide an arc, you are bouncing off the waves, getting airborne and often end up stepping off the board into the water. I find in heavy chop you HAVE to really lean on the inside rail, really ride that inside rail on a tight arc in the trough between the waves......with the board on such a steep angle it smooths out the turn so much, the gybe then becomes a LOT faster (from start to finish) and before you know it you're around and done......Not sure if this makes any sense but its how I deal with big heavy choppy conditions......As I was re-learning this earlier this year I struggled with this for a while until I realized we are not always sailing in text book ideal conditions so you have to make allowances for that. I am by no means an expert, but I feel I can relate to where you're coming from.
@@kev-the-windsurfer. Yes, I'm thinking the duck gybe is the only way I'm going to get away with it because it's faster and you can really slash it around the corner fast.
@@FreshWaterWindsurfer that would work, it also helps when using a smaller sail too, your rig flip is much quicker. I got locked into this "ideal scenario" when I was trying to refine my gybes and I found I actually got worse at it. The key is to be able to read the conditions, make quick decisions about how to deal with the environment, and never hesitate going into a move... and of course you just can't beat time on the water, as long as youre not practicing bad habits!! lol..... Stay low, and counterbalance are two things I keep telling myself going into a gybe, and honestly, counterbalance is probably the most important thing to think about.......
Great suggestion! It's on my "to-film" list! Quick tip- sicker kick, get the noes back in front of the tail with a hard kick of the front foot and pull with the back!
5.0 on an 145l board. must be nice flat water conditions there 🙂. any tips on entering the rear footstrap on a slalom board in sketchy wind conditions?
@@Cookiesports i did already see it, thx. And that trex posture (bringing your centerpoint of gravity down and outwards) helps indeed. Entering straps on al normal board isnt a hard that way, but with a slalom board the rear straps are really outward, leave alone the incredible acceleration it has. An ordeal in gusty wind! 🙈😃
question: What fin size do you use for this combo? Probably not the standard fin (46cm) that comes with the board. That's way too big for a 5m sail. I've seen your reaction on a similar question on this video. But not sure if "classic factory recommendation" means 46cm fin...

I'm wonder if may sails are wrong? 4.7mm & 6.5mm. I choose the 6.5, thinking it the wind wasn't so strong. Should I rig the 4.7mm? or maybe it's too small? Should I think about getting a 5.00 or 5.5mm?
