Thanks to your videos, I've really gotten into windsurfing. I've learned how to get into planing, get into the footstraps, and now I'm working on improving my power jibe. And all of that in Leipzig! Thank you so much!
👍 Your demonstration about getting started upon a Windsurfer was perfectly clear and well timed with the instructions given. Having run my own Windsurfing school I'm fully aware of the best methods to adhere to whilst giving tuition in the sport. Thank you for proving to me that my methods were equally as good as yours. Although I used my personally designed dry land simulator to give demonstrations to my customers first and then gave them the opportunity to practice those techniques upon the simulator prior to setting sail themselves whilst standing upon a Windsurfer out at sea.
Fantastic tutorial. Well timed as well. I'm comfortably sailing in the harness but I know I should be planning sooner/easier. I'll try it next week out of the harness and see how go. Thanks Mario.
Looks I chose #2 the brutal way! My local lake in 30 knot gusts, new (to me) intermediate board. A wingfoiler said as I was getting in "brutal day to be on a windsurfer!" Quite a few gusts knocked me off or had to sheet out, then I got to the feel of controlling the power, feeling it and getting back, and kind of naturally placed my feet where the straps are and pushed into planing a couple times.
I recommend going a bit bigger. People get used to 3.5 sails in windsurfing schools. Go a bit bigger than you are comfortable about. Being a bit overpowered is good and on lakes that rarely happens for smaller sails. I got planing first on an 8.0.
"x is the ultimate in y", for example "gliding is the ultimate in windsurfing" is how you could put the königsdisziplin thing ("the king's discipline" would be more like "die Disziplin des Königs"). thank you so much for explaining. hoping for good wind for all of us to keep giving this a try until it works out for everyone 😀
I found this to be informative. I wish there were more videos about how body wieght affects the sailing experience. I am 105kg, 195cm tall and I don't see many windsurfers who are that heavy and I wonder how it has affected my learning. I use an old F2 comet board (about 150L) and a older 6.5 cambered sail. I get planing and use the harness, but have never reached the first foot strap. I'd love to see a video where a good windsurfer like yourself uses a weight vest to bring them up to my wieght, and see how it changes the experience.
geiles Video!!! Danke! Muss man wirklich deiner Meinung nach Downwind (Raumwindkurs) fahren um ins gleiten zu kommen? Ich würde sagen ein Abfallen reicht
Hi Mario, nice tutorial. Thanks! I have two questions. If I go further back, I can't prevent the luffing. Am I too early? Do I have to get into planing first? And does the catapult come when the course is broad reach and the sail is too close? Two catapults last season have somewhat. discouraged me.
Hi, first of all, you will get to love the catapults... haha just always try to not let go of the boom. That can really help. Aside from that, try to do the squat exercise and go further back in small steps. Like this you will learn to keep the course of your equipment. You will have to learn to steer your gear in almost all positions, before planing will become easy to you. :-)
I'm impressed by your windsurfing skills to get planing like that Mario. I've been windsurfing for 12 years and never done that. I just go for bigger sail. I wonder if you can get planing on 0.5 m2 or 1 m2 less than me with that technique ? There are pros and cons to that though because a bigger sail gives more power for the water start but probably a smaller sail makes duck gybes easier ? Also is it correct that freeride boards like Tabou rocket wide, Starboard Futura, Fanatic Gecko had less rocker to reduce the need for technique ? Fanatic skate has very little rocker ? Slalom boards have lots of banana shape so when you get planing hardly any board is touching water to get maximum speed where as freeride you accept lower maximum speed with more board contacting water but easier to start planing ? I have been pumping my hydrofoil board to get hydrofoiling so it has made me wonder if i should put more effort into pumping on fin boards. I just think that unless you have nearly a big enough sail to get planing then no amount of technique is going to make up the difference ?
These are great videos, many thanks. I have always wanted to learn this, but my wife is laughing at the thought... (I am getting a little old and should probably stick to the ILCA/Laser....
You have a drive towards adventure, so let’s go for it!!! Worst thing is your wife will have fun looking at you and best case is you will have some fun too! Haha
hey great tutorial im right on the edge of planing, yesterday i was out with some coaches 6-7 ms with a 4.2 sail im only 13 so it was a good size im soon getting a trapez so i can have bigger sails but the big question is, when i was out i caught a wave and im pretty sure i was planing, but i wasnt in footstraps or trapez so am i only planing when im in footstraps?
@@MarioKuempel Thanks was really wondering, i am on the lookout for a trapez i found one i think will suit me but im going to the store to try it on :D
I am extremely struggling to get planning. Big sail 7.2, 15 nods wind and an ionic 133l. Nothing works. Still plowing the water. Moved the joint back and forward, nothing gets that board out of water. Feel the strong power from the sail, but the board is not rising enough. I weigh 75 kg. If you have any suggestions please give me some hints. Thank you!
You might need more wind. iSonic is also a very difficult board to get planning... there are easier choices. Look for a board thats a bit longer and it will work! :-)
@@MarioKuempel thank you Mario! I tried also with larger boards and stronger winds, but as I said, the tail is plowing the water and creates huge drag. As much as I am powered up, as much is the drag.
@@MarioKuempel yes, I tried that also. I have been winging for some years and I have some understanding of wind and hydrodynamics. But this is getting frustrating, because I can navigate quite well with the windsurf equipment, but no planning yet 😃
@@tiberiugabriel1 while this is an excellent tutorial, I still believe you should watch the good old beginner to winner. I think probalby your sail is not enough in an upright position ruclips.net/video/0pxoIB1RK-E/видео.htmlsi=rVm8zDC0ftzzZDFs
Dude I got stuck under the sail last week and panicked. Still a beginner but don't want that feeling again. Thinking of stopping windsurfing because of it
@@Leimholz1 thank you. This is exactly what I didn't do. I swam towards the clew and was still hooked in. Got stuck and panicked and thought I was going to drown
@@MarioKuempel Sorry, die Frage hab ich nur halb gestellt🥴 Ich meinte das, was Du ab 09:55 beschreibst. In my humble opinion, you are over complicating, 2-3 years ago i learned a 14y old daughter from a friend to plane, she had never moved her both feed behind the mast before, she nailed planing first try. All is in the food movement and weight shift, the rest will follow automatically.
Mario, I can't be more grateful, that you are making your videos in english for some time. Keep going. Thank you.

Concerning the harness and catapulting: It's part of the experience. Embrace it and never let go of the boom.

It depends a lot on your weight and wind speed. For me at 67kg it was 5.4 on 16-17kts

I'd Say, harness very very first, then planing, then front footstrap and finaly the back one, but there IS really no need to rush this last step.
Great tutorial🎉
THX 👍👍
P.S: Weitermachen 🤙🤙🤙🤙
The reason for the fabric sails in the school is that they are more durable and do not break often. So it's cost efficient for schools
Thank you very much for switching to English. I hope we could do some Clinics soon
