I love the line ”If you like driving, sacrifice a second and half to sixty and drive a Lotus”. I have an Evora 400 and its power (and hence 0-60 time) is modest by comparison with a GTR but the quality of the driving experience easily overcomes that deficit.
I have an issue with the size of cars now, the larger and more refined they are getting the more you don't feel the theatre of speed. My girl has a mk1 ka, 50bhp (maybe) and when ever I drive it, it makes me smile more than it should. Though the breaks and clutch stink as walking away. Doing 40 around some country roads feels mentally quick, as youre driving to at 10 tenths, and there is no sound deadening or any refinement. Jump on a much newer faster car and you can't have fun below the nsl. Old pugs are the same, little shot boxes, but also fun. An st200 would be a good second hand buy I think, small, little refinement, handles well (but not evora well) and goes like green weasel shit of a shovel. I'm a fan of a hot hatch. Well small ones, I don't the golf R or focus RS as a hot hatch. I also like quick estates. Shame they are on their way out for shitty cross overs.
Andrew Austerfields lol. Today I pit my daughters £100, 2005 mk1 ka through its mot, and was blown away when it failed on a tyre. This may be about monster cars etc, but I've always had a soft spot for them. The 1.3z engine in them are little beauties , or was I'm there day, and they handle like a roller skate. Thought the breaks are not up to my GTCs breaks. Shat my self when I stamped on them heading towards a country lane hedge, on the way to drop it off. I may get them updated a bit for her. Though the mot fella said they was fine. Though he hasn't seem me wring its neck. I am ashamed to say I've never driven an original mini. I have the newer cooper s, and hated it. Its a good country lane car, but in town the steering is that heavy it makes the 'small' car feel as big as a saloon estate. Also on the motorway they just drone. To me they are like an iphone, every middle class older lady has one, so all their neighbours get one. If they was smart they would get the out going 2 door swift sport. A thinking mans mini. Also not as frigging common.
jupp, helped myself to a Twingo 2001, crappy tires on it, but still, more fun than my late 320d somehow...but Lotus...another dimension, took a ride today, was shocked like every year how hardcore you can drive those feeble little things...I will never sell that funbox!
I can feel with him...after all, you kinda form a bond with your car if you really like it, so I figure, it would be very hard to let anyone else have go in my baby...modern cars are more or less "saver sex"...Lotus is not.
That has to be one of the best reviews I have seen. At 72 years old I have driven the GTR and the Evora. Two very different cars. One handles through technology, the through smart suspension design. I could not pick which one I would want. I'm lying, the Lotus would be the car. And I know the roads in Australia where I would take it. Great Ocean Road, Perth to Albany, Perseverance Dam road QLD, Ballina to Tenterfield, Gatton to Clifton via Ma Ma Creek spring to mind.
This is a proper car channel. And this guy, (the driver) sells me on the Lotus Evora more than anyone I've seen. 👍 So many smiles, so much enjoyment. Thanks guys.
I've got a 20 year old S1 Elise and I always encourage people to have a drive in it. Some people 'get' what Lotus is about, others will exit with a confused look. This driver 'got' it and did very well to communicate the point. BTW, mine still smells of whatever they glued the aluminium together with - I never get bored of it :) Great video, really enjoyed it.
Now that was very interesting. I’ve had a GT-R for the last 8 years; last year I test drove an Exige 350 Sport and absolutely loved it and came very close to doing a deal with Aimee at Silverstone Lotus. I’ve still got the GT-R because I love it for different reasons, it’s a beast of a car but like your man says, it ‘steamrollers’ the roads whereas the Exige dissected them and it felt quick enough and still felt like a very special car in it’s own right. In an ideal lottery winning world I’d have both in my garage (and no doubt all the other usual suspects too but those two would definitely be in there). That drive in the Lotus has stayed with me, the force is strong. Thanks for another great video.
karl sumner the only problem is the GTR has such good gt credentials, people don’t actually realise it is very easy to do big miles in. I drove the exige s roadster and fell in love, but I would miss the stereo and the large boot. The GTR will leave a big hole come the time
Another great car review Jay. It's refreshing to see a review that realizes that all of these cars... Lotus, Corvette, M series, Porche, Ferrari, etc.... all of these cars are awesome, and special in their own way. The whole... "but mine is better, but mine is faster, but mine is this and that"... pointless... they are ALL great cars.
Enjoyed the video from the start. Enjoyed it more when you mentioned the weight distribution between the C63, Evora 400 and GTR. Great attention to detail 👍
Apart from the minor mathematical blunder (Evora front axle carries 350 kg less than the GTR, not 450 😉). These are huge numbers to take away from the sprung mass though. The Evora seems to be a mighty impressive little thing!
Most relevant video for me.. His reactions, expressions tell me more about how good this car is better than when you drive it. That is because like 9 out of ten viewers we haven't driven this car. I am enjoying this with him. And you have now sold it!? Hope your replacement car is half as good. You got a good formula here. Do more vids with another driver having his/her first kiss, so to speak.
Great review ..I said last video I'd rather have the lotus over the Datsun but having never driven either it was just an assumption on my part ,so it's cool to hear your mate confirm....surly the his Gtr is up for sale soon
Daniel Thomas not yet, the Datsun has been mine for a year and the other day, first warm dry day i took it out, put it in race mode and it still shocks me! It is very special in its own right
get one get one get one! prices are dropping a bit right now, make sure you take someone with you that knows about Lotus and its quirks and things to look out for, PM me with your budget, maybe we´ll figure something out...who knows
This went exactly how I thought it would. 10 years ago I would go out of my way to check out a GTR, now I barely turn my head. That isn't to say that it isn't a fantastic car in what it does, but the styling does nothing for me and as a big race fan and karter, I am much more about the dynamics of the car vs smashing the throttle and letting a computer do the work in beating the guy next to you. Having recently driven my buddies Evora 410 sport (#3 of 8) as well as his GT4, 997.2 GT3 and my 997 C2S, I much more appreciate the light weight feel and so much driver feedback that means more to me than just going fast. At first I thought Jay is just an Evora fan boy, and I still do, but after driving the 410, I would have to admit that if I didn't go P-car, the Evora would have to be the very next car on my list. Everything else is either too big (vette, viper, M4, GTR) too heavy (m4, c63, GTR) isn't mid or rear engine or is just way to expensive (Ferrari, Mac, Lambo). The Evora, gt4, 997 are just the perfect size cars for my taste.
I loved the GT4 and I do like a 911, but I had already had two 911s before the Evora and a GT4 was way beyond my means. The Evora just feels more exotic too, even if it has been a little more problematic than a Porsche probably would have been
13:30 - "on a Sunday, [...] this is covered in bikers." Yes, yes it was. And to any other subs, I highly recommend the area for a weekend blast, fantastic roads in a great piece of countryside. Really enjoyed this, love how he turns into a five year old and gets really excited. 18:06 Basically calling the GTR the practical option, brilliant and hilarious. Camera shy or not, he has a great way with words and speaks the petrol head language. "GTR... has a boot... that makes it a family car!" If my left leg weren't so mangled I'd insist that next time I bring you my R that I have a go ;) Will have to settle for a passenger ride ;)
Seem like a great road car,not over powered beautiful handling and sounds awesome!by the why 400hp is more than enough on the road especially in a light lotus
Great video, and GTR owner looks like a genuine chap too. Recent weeks I’ve been serious looking at an Evora again (possibly letting my air cooled 911 go)...however budget stretches only to an Evora S rather than 400....i think you’ve driven and made a video with the Evora S and 400....does the 400 feel like a completely different car to the Evora S?
I did think that when I watched it back but at the time we were just having a fairly normal conversation! Glad you liked it, I wasn't sure how people would feel about it
To be fair I wasn’t happy being on camera and James did a very sneaky job of conducting an interview whilst making it feel like a normal conversation between two petrol heads....
Nice review. Which tyres do you have on the 400? There is so much feeling and feedback from the people zero corsas I had on my sports racer that I'd be shitting myself on a wet country road. Changing to conventional pzeros has helped confidence
Hello JayEmm! I have a question about the Lotus Evora 400, you know how the Evora 400 has a sport mode which sounds better than the default mode and has a mighty supercharged v6 sound, well does the start up sound stay the same in sport mode if you turn off the car in sport mode
When you turn the car on the valve is open for a few seconds anyway, but by default the car always starts in normal mode. You can set sport mode before you turn the engine on if you're that keen
Around the 8min mark he mentions a video by someone called Steve about selling an Exige? As someone looking at getting into a V6S soon could you provide a link please? (Another great video btw)

I was very camera shy and it’s credit to James that he coaxed so much out of me. Made me feel very relaxed and like a chat between mates. Also the car was a sensory overload and I was savouring every minute of it.
My Evora 400 was an absolute disaster. Lotus were shocking at dealing with the problems. A semi- decent sort-of-supercar, but oh my goodness there are better cars. From companies that care more about their customers.
That's very unfortunate to hear. I'd be lying if I said you were the only one and it is an area Lotus desperately need to attend to. By the same token, friends of mine have had much larger issues with bigger brands. But Lotus have a reputation and the only way to shake it is working hard to build cars better and look after customers
I had terrible dealer support for my previous Series 2 Exige S260 until no dealerships were around in the USA. I had no choice but to sell it. In contrast, I just love my gt3 and the well established great Porsche dealership support!
It's ashame to learn lotus didn't do proper marketing campaign otherwise they could do better than evora. To me, lotus only keep themselves close within their enthusiasts than open market
jonny jones I have an Evora 400 and recently test drove a M2. I found the two cars feel very different. The Evora feels lighter with better balance than the M2. The steering on the Evora has better feel and the way the engine delivers power is iron-fist like, whereas the M2 engine is the same but in a velvet glove. The M2 is more sophisticated, better sat nav, stereo, switchgear, more room in the back, bigger boot etc. For me the Evora makes a great second car for special weekend drives but I would have an M2 as a fun daily driver.

stock GTR suspension isn't good enough for the weight of the car. you need an Ohlins TTX 4 ways adjustable to eliminates body roll and then all your complains about GTR weight will be gone.
i love r35 but it doesnt sound or look like lotus..r35 drink petrol lotus dont..evora is a more sport car than r35 or m5..and that toyota parts and reliability is taking the evora to real life next level feelings..the ised car prices say all the story..lotus evora s 350 is more money used than r35-996 turbo-m3
I have an Elise...and always wanted a late model Esprit...But the Evora seems like a great alternative...Not as nice looking as the Esprit, but a better car. Well done Lotus.
a "real review" by owners and probably the best insight into the Evora 400 I've seen well done guys.
Thanks!
Considering he’s camera shy, very good job of the review
When he revs it and said ‘wow’. . Says it all. Fantastic.
I love the line ”If you like driving, sacrifice a second and half to sixty and drive a Lotus”. I have an Evora 400 and its power (and hence 0-60 time) is modest by comparison with a GTR but the quality of the driving experience easily overcomes that deficit.

Loved the comment about the glue. Perhaps gluehead would be a good new term to describe a Lotus enthusiast.

Thanks for another great video.
The owner of this GTR also tried an Exige and reached the same conclusion you did
So did he do the right thing?
He's waiting for the right time and right deal
As am I. Christ, what are all the Lotus dealers going to do with traded-in GT-R’s? :)
karl sumner the only problem is the GTR has such good gt credentials, people don’t actually realise it is very easy to do big miles in. I drove the exige s roadster and fell in love, but I would miss the stereo and the large boot. The GTR will leave a big hole come the time

Thanks Martin. To me that's the real definition of a petrolhead
For someone who doesn't like being on camera he was very good!
Makes me feel good about buying my 400 too.
The most underrated car on earth.
Enjoyed the video from the start. Enjoyed it more when you mentioned the weight distribution between the C63, Evora 400 and GTR. Great attention to detail 👍
Thanks, I try and get a little technical when I feel it is appropriate, although I am no expert
Apart from the minor mathematical blunder (Evora front axle carries 350 kg less than the GTR, not 450 😉). These are huge numbers to take away from the sprung mass though. The Evora seems to be a mighty impressive little thing!
Guys this video is awesome. Informative, enjoyable and really shows the emotion of the driving experience. Great job!
Thankyou!
I used to love gtr but i recently has a ride in a Lotus Elise a few months back and iv definitely been converted!
Great review from someone with a different perspective. Stuart did a great job of conveying his experience!
Comparing stomp (GTR) to Ballet (Evora) - great comment. He really likes his car and driving does the GT-R owner.
Two car lovers, one great car. Loved the video. The GT-R and Evora are two of my aspirational cars.
Thanks Adrian
Great review ..I said last video I'd rather have the lotus over the Datsun but having never driven either it was just an assumption on my part ,so it's cool to hear your mate confirm....surly the his Gtr is up for sale soon

get one get one get one! prices are dropping a bit right now, make sure you take someone with you that knows about Lotus and its quirks and things to look out for, PM me with your budget, maybe we´ll figure something out...who knows
You guys should do more reviews together!!! Stellar :D
I'll let Stuart know, cheers!
Absolutely excellent review told me all those ownership little things that the dealer just doesnt say, bloody well done
Emira will be incredible.
Good statement with the "Wanted a car that's fun at 6/10"

Another video demonstrating how wonderful the evora is...
One lesson that I got from watching this video: GT-R is not the only car in the world...
Well, Cletus, he liked the car a lot more then he liked your shirt‼️😱😱😱
Great review. You could start a series of reviews like this one with owners of other performance car models, for more perspective on the Evora.
I may but I like to keep a bit of variety, I don't want to bore the audience with the same thing too much
Best review, more like this please!
Evora tea time @140km/h...lovely^^ atom road drive? oh f yes...gotta ask an old mate of mine for that...never thought of that!
13:30 - "on a Sunday, [...] this is covered in bikers."
Yes, yes it was. And to any other subs, I highly recommend the area for a weekend blast, fantastic roads in a great piece of countryside.
Really enjoyed this, love how he turns into a five year old and gets really excited. 18:06 Basically calling the GTR the practical option, brilliant and hilarious. Great video.
Seem like a great road car,not over powered beautiful handling and sounds awesome!by the why 400hp is more than enough on the road especially in a light lotus
The new GTRs from 2017 are a lot more tighter and significantly more comfortable. Jayemm pls try a newer one and let us one what you think.
Great video 🖒
What a car ! love it
Think he liked it 😃
Mansfield His face at 6:10.
Lotus for the win!
Yeah man, bring on more content! Or I’ll make content of my own one 😉
Mr. M, did you say the village is called Benchingfield? GE couldn't understand my input or I'd spelt it wrong or had misheard you. Thanks in advance.
In some ways yes but the S is a fantastic car no doubt
Great video m8, cheers! 👍✌
Thanks!
@jayemm excellent review! Which would you pick knowing all that you do: Evora GT vs. Cayman GT4?
An enthusiastic and enjoyable review. One small point - try to interrupt the poor chap a little less.
Michelin Pilot Super Sport - factory fitment on the 400
Sounds amazing..
Thanks Mate!
900kg - 550kg is actually 350kg lighter on the front axle compared to the GTR, not 450. Nobody noticed yet?
Apparently not. Maths never my strong point
Anyway great video as always!
What kind og K&N filter was installed? Is it the original airbox filterinsert or is it the open type?
gotta have both..two different animals
Around the 8min mark he mentions a video by someone called Steve about selling an Exige? As someone looking at getting into a V6S soon could you provide a link please? (Another great video btw)
There is a video about Steve buying his exige, have a look back and it's there. Called C63 to Exige
Lotus chassis design/engineering is the best in the world.
What happened to "Magnitude" ?
4:36 oohhhh yes
There are quite a few moments in this where the driver is about to say something and he is interrupted then he has lost his thought chain. The drivers opinion is what this video is about so he should have been allowed to speak.
We intended to shoot it as a conversation but watching it back myself I see what you mean. It's something I am going to try and be more conscious of in future videos.
He's happy that his feelings were accurately conveyed though, which is good
I was very camera shy and it’s credit to James that he coaxed so much out of me. Made me feel very relaxed and like a chat between mates. Also the car was a sensory overload and I was savouring every minute of it.
If I come up to see you, can I have a go at the Evora?
What have you got to offer a go in in return?
JayEmm on Cars could offer a 550i, Z3, Macan S, Vespa P200E, and I have a good friend with a 1948 Massie-Ferguson tractor if you bring Lawrie.
550i sounds fun, don't see them much anymore. E60?
JayEmm on Cars F10
Oooh very nice. Tempting.
Agreed. No excuse for Lotus as they are at the moment though. You, on the other hand, are brilliant.
Thanks!
I had terrible dealer support for my previous Series 2 Exige S260 until no dealerships were around in the USA. I had no choice but to sell it. In contrast, I just love my gt3 and the well established great Porsche dealership support!
Jay, did he end up selling the GTR and purchasing an Evora??
Not yet, the GT-R unfortunately got rear ended by a Fiesta and is currently being worked on
Chalk and cheese. One is a high percentage, 0 to 60 in 2.8 second supercar, the other is very nice, but not in the same leauge.
GTR Man one you actually drive and ones a big computerised bus.
It's ashame to learn lotus didn't do proper marketing campaign otherwise they could do better than evora. To me, lotus only keep themselves close within their enthusiasts than open market
The GTR is a Playstation. The Evora is a driver's car.
this guys just put his GTR on auto trader"" think a bmw m2 would give close to the evora 400 feel for much less?
It's a very different experience although as a practical car I love the M2
jonny jones I have an Evora 400 and recently test drove a M2.
And you would have one of the most boring and plain looking sports cars currently available imo. Not even comparable in terms of appearance.
Not a chance. Completely different.
yes the m2 has a super smooth power build up""" I'm shocked you say the 400 is more iron fist like with its power as it none turbo engine""" does evora feel lot faster than a m2
As long as GT-R owners can drive a manual, then yes maybe.
In the UK they normally can
Sorry that was a bit of a dig on GT-R's and automatic only supercars in general.
In the US people get them and think they are hot shit because they can push a pedal real hard.
I'd rather have something involving and maybe even takes a bit of skill...the Evora being a good example.
The GTR is too heavy whereas the Lotus is lightweight and agile just like comparing a 250 lbs linebacker versus a 190 lbs receiver.
stock GTR suspension isn't good enough for the weight of the car. you need an Ohlins TTX 4 ways adjustable to eliminates body roll and then all your complains about GTR weight will be gone.
How much is one of those though?
So, has he bought one yet? ;-)
Not yet but I suspect his next car may come from Hethel
Jays shirts gayness 11/10
#NailedIt
regards from germany ;)
Danke Mein Schatz
The gtr doesnt do 0-60 in 2.8 seconds.like someone commented.even the nismo doesnt!
Why even compare these two TOTALY DIFFERENT cars?
Why not?
It's like comparing apples and oranges. Yes, you can compare but why when one is 4 wheel drive just to start with.
Because both are interesting alternatives to a 911
Coming from that angle I agree 100%. ;-)
i love r35 but it doesnt sound or look like lotus..r35 drink petrol lotus dont..evora is a more sport car than r35 or m5..and that toyota parts and reliability is taking the evora to real life next level feelings..the ised car prices say all the story..lotus evora s 350 is more money used than r35-996 turbo-m3
Called lotus but it's all Toyota
Just the engine and box,the rest is lotus.
The odd couple
amcluesent beauty and the beast but only my friends call me beast
was your friend holding a poo in during the video?
No that's just his face. He's not fond of being on camera, I think he did quite well
What a mature comment. Are you 10 years of age?
No, he’s just English. Doh! Also, 🙄
BRING THE STUPID MERC! Mercs are stupid,... BRING IT ON!!
I have an Elise...and always wanted a late model Esprit...But the Evora seems like a great alternative...Not as nice looking as the Esprit, but a better car. Well done Lotus.
