How to Repair a Loose Ford Column Shifter - Common Issue

- How to repair a common issue amongst may Ford trucks which causes sloppy or loose column shifter linkage. This particular truck is a 1998 Ford Ranger, but this issue can be found on similar generation F series trucks as well. As you can see there is excessive play in the column shifter linkage, either making it hard to select a gear, not allowing gears to properly engage, having issues engaging park, and also not activating the safety switch when in park. This is an extremely easy fix and the only item required for the repair is thread locker. #ford #fordranger #fordfseries

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-threadlocker
-light
-ratchet set
-torx drivers
Procedure:
-you can disassemble some of the dashboard under the steering column, but with a little patience you can reach up and access the fasteners
-unfortunately there are two fasteners which comes loose over time, causing play in the steering linkage
-when going under the dashboard under the steering column, you can see a bracket which is basically above the hood release
-this bracket is held on with two torx bolts
-you can simply tighten this, but instead I would recommend removing each bolt and applying a medium grade threadlocker
-remove one fastener at a time, this at least saves the trouble of having to line up the bracket again as it’s a very tight space to work
-once that fastener has been removed, ensure it’s clean and then apply a medium grade threadlocker
-reinstall the fastener and move onto the next one
-apply threadlocker to it as well and then ensure both fasteners are tight
-after testing out the shifter, the play is greatly reduced and there is no longer gear selecting issues or activating the parking safety switch

This morning I put my 01 windstar into drive and one of these bolts fell out and hit me in the foot! Easy fix! Thank you!
No problem, happy I could help!
Huge help. Thank you. Was an absolute pain to reach the bolts. But once tightened, made a night and day difference.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!!! Pulled into my driveway after work this evening and couldn't get into park. Had to get my kid to come out and put a chock under the tire, steep driveway was too much for emergency brake.....I'm a carpenter with absolutely no mechanic skills and no money to pay for a mechanic either! Freaked out for a few minutes, then found this video and got everything fixed pretty fast. Thanks again!
No problem, happy to help!
Thank you for staying what size torx. Several other videos show the procedure, but none said what size torx.
This may seem insignificant, but I have mobility issues. It's a great help to me to know what tools to take with me to the vehicle I'm working on. Just jumping in and out and going back and forth to the tool shed is harder for me than doing most repairs.
No problem, happy I could help!
If only I had watched this sooner. Last night my 1996 Ford 250 slipped out of park when I was closing my gate, slamming me to the ground with the door and reversing across the street through my neighbor's fence. So glad that tree was there to stop it!
Yikes, sorry to hear! Hopefully you weren't hurt.
THANK YOU!!!!! I had replaced the bushings in the steering column of my 99 Ranger thinking that was my only issue. No improvement afterwards, in fact it was worse. Was close to taking it and losing loads of money, but found this video and OMG YOU SAVED ME loads of frustration! YAY!
Thanks so much for sharing. I was stupid enough to think it was my transmission and was about to take it somewhere. Thanks again!.
Absolutely amazing! I have been driving with this condition for years! I was thinking today Lets see if I can find anything about this and what it would take to get it fixed and came upon this video! After watching ti I am thinking Come on it can't be this simple! SO I go out and take a look at mine. Sure enough they are loose. Thanks for stating which bit! I find the bit and a ratchet and pull one out thread lock and reinstall. Do the same on the other, total time invested less than 30 minutes. Try out my shifter and it is so tight it is almost awkward for me now! :) I am going to have to get used to this tight shifter! :) Thanks you so much!! I have a 2007.
I just completed this fix on my 02 ranger a few minutes ago. Thank you and I wish you the best of luck in the future Sir.
Thank You. My son was telling me his shifting issues and I found this video when trying to figure out why his Ranger was acting that way. I walked out and found the bolt laying on the drivers floor mat. I suppose that was a good verification of the problem.
Happy I could help!
Spot on explanation in this video, concise yet thorough. This fixed my 04 Ranger not going into Park! Thankyou!
Thank you so much and happy to hear you got it fixed!
Thank you very much for the video! I was worried id have to bring truck to get cable looked at....turned out to be a 5 minute project...mostly contorting myself into position lol.
While under there i also adjusted the little wheel to make my indicator line up perfect on dash.
Thank you genuinely
No problem, happy to help. And thank you for the feedback too :)
Had this happen to me today on my Mazda B3000, bolt came off and wouldn't engage into park or drive. Found this video and fixed the issue no problem. Thanks 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Happy to hear this helped and thank you for the feedback!
Thanks a lot. Already replaced the shifter in two different trucks because of this. After a few years I felt like it was about to break again. Wish someone had told me about this when I changed it
Did you ever lose forward and reverse all together? My screws are tight and can’t catch gears
@@stitchthisditchthat259 check to see that it didn't become disconnected from the actual transmission. Happened a couple of times and I thought the shifter was broken again. It's like 200$ to replace the shifter with parts from the dealership
very informative. This helped me repair my 97 explorer today. Thank you for the very good video details.
Thank you and happy I was able to help!
Omg you are a life saver, was stranded and found this video. Thank you so much
Glad it helped!
worked, my mothers 2003 ford windstar had a problem going into park i go to check out what's wrong and first thing i spot is this hex screw. i found your video just typing in ford windstar wont go into park into google i assumed i would be looking for the same thing in a lil different spot. sure enough it was. I screwed it in and Bang it goes into park, amazing. 20 years ago who knows how this would have been handled. Thanks for the video and useful information.
I was pondering selling my 96 F150. After following your instructions it now shifts like new. I think I might keep it now.
I'd keep it.
Thank you was having a problem getting it into park
Thanks you are what the internet should be! This was very helpful. Now back to the driveway to pretend that I'm driving.
Just did it worked like a charm. Just for this I have to subscribe.
Awesome to hear and thank you for the support!
Thanks SO MUCH 4 ur video my Ford Ranger exactly problem Firestone in Las Vegas wanted 300$ to tighten 2 screws
You’re very welcome, happy I could help!
Anyone know the exact fastener call out of the bolt is?
I know it's a 30 torque screw but length and diameter?
Thank you for the video. Fixed the problem
You're welcome!
Watched it fixed it can't get better than that , E Z
Awesome to hear!
It's good folks like yourself that help so many others like myself and I genuinely appreciate your time and effort in giving such awesome help!@ thank you again..
Crazy... found this on accident, and yea my bolt was backed out a ton and other one loose. Just bought it and almost spend money and time on a shift tube. Didnt need it. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
The best thing about this video is that you actually showed a full body view of the person and hiw he has to basically stick his entire head and shoulders in there. It's quite a bit harder if your larger or wider in size. Still doable...juuuuust harder. 😉😞😰
I found it easier to take a picture before you work and then you'll know where to put your hands. I would also wear gloves. I have a 2000 and after I was done my fingers felt like they had microscopic pieces of metal in them....so wash your hands immediately after finishing and the pain will go away because it will wash off the metal pieces (Just in case you needed to know😜)
bro here i am thinking its gonna be this whole issue and meanwhile its a few loose bolts i fixed in 1 minute. literally took longer to get my tools out than to fix. 92 f150 and it feels new now haha thanks so much
Dang, those 410,000km old bolts were loose!! I couldn't even find the low gear. Now, it shifts as crisp as new! Note that there is also a little spin wheel under there that let's you align the shift needle! Thanks!
Awesome to hear you got it fixed!
Thanks buddy. The spin wheel 😮
Great Video It's a goood thing I stumbled your channel.. Lthank You!
Thank you!
THANKS, this saved me a huge headache!
Thanks ! 1bolt on floor and $16.94 set of torx Allen’s and 10 minutes fixed🦅🇺🇸
Glad I could help, thank you for the feedback!
This actually worked dude!! Awesome easy fix, Thanks!
Glad I could help!
thank you very much. As @beingthere......said, made a night and day difference. Thank you for making the video.
You're very welcome and thank you for the feedback!
Clean bolts with carb cleaner and spray carb cleaner into each bolt hole or thread locker won't harden. Selector lever bushing also develop slop over time.
Whats the name of the part that the screws screw into? It broke off where one screw went. Thank you
great job and great video thank you very much helped a lot. Problem is shifter lever itself wiggle too much and is still loose.
Great Job on this tutorial 👍🏼
Saved me today.
Happy to help!
Perfect ... worked great ... thanks for posting

dude. this is exactly what i was looking for........ thanks! subd
Happy I could help and thank you so much for the support!
Like and subscribed, I’ve got a 08’ Ford E-350 that has this issue. I have to pull the lever wayyyy up into park before I can even turn the key to start the van. Can’t wait to try this out lol. Is there no way to make it “factory” tight? I saw even after the fix it had a little play
Thank you so much for the support! There maybe a bushing requiring a replacement in order to tighten up the linkage.
THX! Fixed!
You're welcome!
Thank you!
Awesome thanks for posting
I did this a few weeks ago. Easy fix. Now, though, that pin that goes through that plate sheared in half. Do I have to take the whole thing apart to replace that pin and what is the part that holds it in case I have to get a new one?
I need help this happened to me and I found the screw on the floor however I found the thread broken off that the screw is suppose to go in so I can't screw it back. I need help replacing what those screws go in so that I can screw it back
Any luck on finding a replacement? This just happened to me
@@IvanRodriguez-ql2mi the best thing to do is that the whole piece out and take it to a shop to weld it or do it yourself. Then install back. I paid $250 for a mechanic to do this but you can save money taking the piece out yourself
Im having issues on my 87 f350.
Selector on dash is stuck on drive.
I can shift thru gears still but line stays on D no matter what.
Im having issues being stuck in first gear when in drive.
Im wondering if because the selector is stuck on drive that when i go to put it in D its actually putting the truck in 1st?
Helpful 😊
I'm about to go try that I seen this bolt on the floor board of my truck
Thanks 👍
Thanks easy fix
No problem!
What is the name of the part that the bolts screw into?????
What size diameter are the T30 screws?
Ty!
You're welcome!
What size bolt is that, I’m missing it
Where do you get another fastener from if you’re missing one
Best just to take the existing one out and match it up at a local hardware, auto parts, or fastener store.
So, I checked and I'm missing a bolt. It's nowhere on the floor so it must have fallen out a while ago and I probably vacuumed it up. What size bolt can I replace it with or what's that part called?
Hi there....
I also lost one of the bolts and need to know the size? Can you pass that info on please.
Thanks
Robert
Does this also apply to a 2010 Ranger?
This is very helpful but I’m not sure that I could do it.
Will this work on a 06 F150
I meant 96 F150
The top bolt i see wont grab on my 01 ranger. Do you know what i can do?
Try a longer bolt, perhaps the shallower threads are only damaged. Or the worse case scenario would be threading the hole up to the next size.
@@4DIYers hey I have this same issue only the top ear is completely sheared off. Do you know the name of the part these screws thread into?
I read it I fixed it can't get much better than that
On my truck, The metal piece where the bracket sits onto cracked where one of the bolts go. I have no idea how to get that fixed or replaced. Does anybody know?
Is it the part it threads into? If not, maybe try a larger washer.
@@4DIYers It was the shifter tube, where the screws go, it was cracked , ordered it thanks tho
one of the plastic portions of where the bolt threads into broke off. so whats next?
You can try using a larger washer if possible. A cable tie could be incorporated into it somehow. Or the only last option would be replacing the plastic component.
I got 2003 ranger it got out of gear win was putting in park now won't start its in neutral
So first off thank you I thought it was much worse. Unfortunately the metal block thing these screw into is broken. Not sure how to replace that or what its called
Hello, Ed here
Did you find that part or what its called? I've got the same issue
@@calilovemusic2816 yes I bought it and it I forgot what it was called but it was something like the steering cylinder
@@JosephHeartsu "stering cylinder?"
@@calilovemusic2816 yes it was like steering wheel cylinder tube. Just tell Ford that and it should get you what you need
K Joseph, thank you for the info
Missing one bolt what size is it
What size bolt
So what exactly is the symptom?
The symptoms are listed at the start of the video.
Does a 2005 Explorer have this "infamous" bracket with the torx screws? I can't for the life of me find this in my truck. Anyone with same issue?
I believe it's a different setup for the Explorer. Your best bet would be asking on an Explorer specific forum or Facebook car group and hopefully someone would have the common cause of that. You could have a worn bushing and the only way that could be seen is removing the covers on the steering column.
There's still slop in it I'd like to get it back to no slop
Thank you sir.
No problem!
