The way you had explained it made me understand it from many sides at a time. Thanks a lot. And yes, Shakespeare seems more and more manipulative the more you study him through his words, and especially poetry. The best in this industry is the most manipulative though. Thanks again, you made me realize more than what I intended to.
What a Mensch you are. I came for here for a breakdown of the one stanza that alluded me, I stayed for the vibrancy, the quirks and the undeniable passion. What an experience. Thank you, mate. I wish you all the Blessings. 🙏🏾
Thanks, Mansoor. If you're ever a student at Concordia University of Edmonton, you can take one of my classes. :) Unfortunately, beyond that I don't have a ton of time to meet. But I do read everyone's feedback, which I greatly appreciate!
Another top-notch analysis - I listened to your take on Sonnet 130 as well. One criticism, though. While I recognize that you are trying to inspire the interest of students, your speculations on the character of Shakespeare - 'manipulative', 'misogynistic' - seem to me ill-advised in that they mislead students as to the nature of Shakespeare's work and of poetry in general. Using this poem as an example: even if we were to accept the notion that S. actually did compose it as a vessel of seduction, rather than solely as an artistic project, the goal, surely, would have been to impress the addressee with his skill, rather than to fool them into believing he will grant them some kind of immortality. Wouldn't he figure that if the hypothetical object of his desire were clever enough to appreciate the poem, they would be clever enough to see right through it - i.e., to see that it is not really about them, but about the power of poetry generally and the power of the poet WS specifically? If that is 'manipulation', it is manipulation of a playful, if intellectual, sort.
Yes, that's a good point, and one I did not mean to exclude. Sonnets tend to be about showing off one's technical artistry and intellectual wit. The same point can be made about a poem like Donne's "The Flea," which is surely not to be taken seriously.
I'm afraid I do not have a PDF. Are you looking for the text of this video? If so, the captions are accurate. You are welcome to translate them into a different language too. :)
