  • Some say you cannot spray polycrylic finish with a HVLP spray gun. So I did the research, and then gave it a shot. Watch this tutorial on how it can be done!

    It's water-based... you can thin it with water 10-15%... Makes a HUGE difference... give it try. This also decreases the size of atomizing paint droplets and allows for a "wetter" application and smoother overlaps. I'm serious, been using it for years and years like that. Also, you should still be using a respirator.

      Yes, I mispoke on the video. BUT!! I corrected myself in my website article, and I gave mixing ratios for folks to use at home to hit those percentages.

    I used the one coat Polycrylic from Minwax with an automotive paint gun. I thinned it with water and sprayed it at about 38 psi and had great results. After seeing the HVLP gun, I am going to get one. Thanks for the tutorial.

      Yes, I realized I mispoke later and corrected myself in my website article. When I siad, "You can't thin this with anything..." I meant you can't thin it with any solvent as you would with an oil-based finish. It thins with WATER.

    great video. this is exactly what I was looking for. getting ready to faux glaze some chairs with very detailed carving. already primed and painted. going to spray on a coat of polycrylic as a sealer before glazing. otherwise the dark glaze adheres too much to the paint.

    Thank You for the information--very thorough. I was wondering if there was any streaking from that polycrylic after the piece dried?
    It's funny because minwax and the pro paint shops here in Minnesota are closed at this hour. I wanted to know if you have ever sprayed polycrylic over a black water based enamel? Thank You.

    • @Doobly-Do
      @Doobly-Do  7 лет назад +1

      No streaking. But I have to say, streaking is probably more an effect from poor spray technique, than material being sprayed. I've sprayed over all color enamels, including black.

    Will it be a good idea to spray polycrylic for an exterior door? Paint does not carry metallic colors for exterior, so will the polycrylic be a good protectant? Our front entry door is not really exposed to much sunlight so I think the metallic paint should hold, but what do you think?

    • @Doobly-Do
      @Doobly-Do  7 лет назад

      I don't see why not. I use it over everything in my shop... plastic laminate, wood, stain, enamel, and even bare metal (technique picked up from John Heisz -- thanks John!). It protects all my tables and machines from abrasions and rust.

    I am building a table and chairs set,I have brushed on 4 coats of the polycrylic on the table top looks good,but on the chairs I want to spray poly on them.can this be done? I want to use semi gloss

      Bill,
      Yes! I suggest doing your first coat with a brush and fairly thick. Then 220 grit sandpaper, lightly by hand, between coats and do the remaining coats with a spray gun. Run the air pressure as low as you can and still get a fan-shaped spray from the gun. Lots of thin coats works best, as poly dries really fast between coats with a spray gun. Lastly, clean the gun immediately when you are done spraying, to prevent the polycrylic from drying in side the gun.
      DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL. Polycrylic is water-based, so steel wool will introduce rust into your finish as it cures. With the exception of using a spray gun, follow all other manufacturer's directions on the label.
      Happy building and finishing!

    Ever do a test from the product in a can vs. an airgun?

    • @Doobly-Do
      @Doobly-Do  7 лет назад +1

      I have. You can get great results from both, so its really up to user preference in my opinion. For a 'base coat', I like to use a brush and go thick, and then finish with 2 or 3 sprayed top coats. But I tailor the technique to the project and what the client is looking for, so it's hard to generalize much.

    Thank you for this. I am making cornhole board and was having issues with brushing on the polycrylic. So I want to spray my next boards. Were you using a satin finish, or did spraying it make it have a non gloss finish?

    • @Doobly-Do
      @Doobly-Do  10 лет назад +3

      Jonathan,
      I used semi-gloss, but the spraying action does 'satin-ize' it a bit. It depends on how thick you build up the coat each pass... thinner = more satiny, thicker = shinier. Although the video doesn't look it, the finish is a nice semi-gloss on the wood but more satin on the plastic laminate (which was pretty shiny to start). Overall, this piece and the entire project came out phenomenally. I am very pleased with it.
      Always happy to be of help!

      Compressor. 5HP, single phase, 30-gallon

    New to all this.... but why do you sand in between sprays?

    • @Doobly-Do
      @Doobly-Do  7 лет назад

      This could be a long discussion. The short of it, a higher quality finish (smoother) and better adhesion between coats. It is not 100% necessary, but in production of fine furniture, it usually is required to get the results the client is paying for. Marc Spagnuolo has a great tutorial on this with lacquer, but the concepts are the same with all finishes... Link: ruclips.net/video/q94PuccM_s4/видео.html

    will this be good on EPO foam? or regular EPS (styrofoam) ty

    • @Doobly-Do
      @Doobly-Do  9 лет назад +2

      friedchicken1981,
      Yes. Polycrylic is a water-based acrylic clear coat, so it will not react with EPO or EPS foam. Any solvent based finish will, so it sounds to me like polycrylic is your best choice. "RC Bob" Kreutzer has a good article at www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=192622,

    That HVLP gun should have mineral spirits or pump armor run through it so it does not rust.

    • @Doobly-Do
      @Doobly-Do  8 лет назад +3

      +Mike Grant
      Agreed. However, dry air blown through the gun does just fine at drying it to the bone. We've been running this system for years now and nothing has rusted yet. Not even in Tampa humidity.
      Thank you for your interest!

      Nope, its from the RUclips archives, I believe. If not, then its from the FreeStockMusic website... only two places I've utilized.

    I watched another video where the guy reduced the minwax polycrylic with Windex glass cleaner at a one to one ratio. It sprayed great through an airbrush. He did shoot clear though, so maybe that makes a difference. I couldn't keep watching this video because the music is so annoying.

    • @Doobly-Do
      @Doobly-Do  7 лет назад +1

      Ooh, great idea! I'm not an airbrush guy, because my clients are usually asking for larger projects, but this makes perfect sense. The glass cleaner works as a flow-aid, which reduces the surface tension of the water in the polycrylic as a chemical thinner does in oil-based finishes.
