I have always, always loved Wynn Stewart, his voice, his style, steel guitars and that Bakersfield sound. Wynn was never recognized for his great talent. Anyone who loves true country music has to appreciate his music.
I like hearing the fabulous voice of Wynn singing this tune that he wrote more than the #1 hit tune sang by Merle Haggard, and this is the first time I knew that Wynn sang this song himself. Thanks so much for this wonderful post of a classic tune!!
Wynn gave merle haggard that song merle played in wynns band an went to wynn in these exact words. Wynn merle said if you had the chance to make me a star would you wynn said yes merle said give me the song you wrote sing a sad song. The rest is history
A true masterpiece. That's a better version than the Haggard's one, by far. Ralph Mooney solo is heavenly. Sad Wynn Stewart ain't got the success he deserved and nowdays is almost forgotten.
I wish people would learn to compare apples to apples if they must have some sort of "Best." But what this is, is the same as comparing apples to elephants. There is no comparison - even with the same steel player on both versions. Each singer is a unique, ONE-OF-A-KIND, individual. There is no duplicate of either. Each recording was done under different circumstances with different producers. So there is no way for anyone to make a fair judgement of which one is "BETTER." You can say you LIKE one more than the other, because, like them, you are a unique individual with different tastes, choices, opinions. But neither of these two songs is BETTER than the other or any other song. IT IS NOT A COMPETITION - even in your own mind. It's unfair to either artists to judge them as such.
@@WYO_Cowboy_Joe I wish people would learn to treat issues more appropiately and, above all, more lightly Anyway we are indeed comparing apples to apples, I don't see any elephants. This is simply a comparision, nobody here is put anybody in competition. And is so desolating and boring to realize that the prefix "In my opinion" is still necessary: of course, this is MY opinion. RUclips comments section is a spot for personal thought and points of view, that is obvious. No competition, they are both two delicious but different apples. But I found this particoular bite on one apple better than the one on the other. That's all.
I wish people would read with better understanding. You became too defensive and still tried to justify your statement, entirely missing the point. These are not TWO APPLES. For that comparison, you'd need two Wynns and two Hags. But you don't have that. You have one apple and one elephant. Wynn and Hag are as different from each other as are apples and elephants. Also, this was not a comparison. It was a statement (poorly presented) of your preference. My point was that there can never be any kind of comparison between two diverse objects, items or people. If you want to compare Chevy's, get two. But don't try to compare a Chevy and a Ferrari. If you like Wynn ... GREAT, so do I. But I also like Hag and I would never assume to slight one or the other by pitting them against each other in a personal, opinionated comparison.
Back in May 1967 our hometown country radio station had a Mon-Fri contest Called quess the song's name and singer to win a prize. I used to go to work at 3:30 pm After lunch I would lay in my bed to listen country music on my transistor radio tll it was time to go. The DJ put a song for the contest. It was a recent released song that had not gotten much play. I had heard it twice before in a span of 2 weeks. I recognized it right away. I got up and went to the living room where the phone was. Called the station but the line was busy. I tried twice and still could not get thru. On my 3rd attempt the DJ answered. He did not have a winner yet. So I told him that is Wynn Stewart singing, It's Such A Pretry World Today. The dude said you are the winner Congratulations. i asked what I had won and was told to go to the station at 10 am and that he would tell me then what the prize was. Next day he interviewed me on the air for about 6 minutes. Afterwards we shook hands and I went home. That was the only time I won the contest. Later I went and bought Stewart's 45 record at our local music shop.
What a song, what a singer! Sorry all you Merle Haggard fans, Wynn had Merle in his band and Merle was going to do his first recording. He asked Wynn to use this song and he agreed (himself had not recorded it yet). Merle's version is nowhere close to what Wynn later on did himself. Sorry!
What a lovely voice,I hadn't heard much of him over here back in the day but certainly love his songs.thank you from NZ ❤

The King of Bakersfield

Jan Howard
wish the "tinky" piano wasn't in there. The Great Ralph Mooney on steel.
The piano is the best part of this song.
@@donnacastello9536 Ditto!
Ralph Mooney the first Steel Guitar for Merle Haggard band the Stranger in 1965.
Wynn should have been a bigger star, and Ralph Mooney is the greatest Steel guitarist period
