There are real voices out there that still sound great today, what makes Freddie Mercury different tho is he was born with a vocal chord that let him hit those impossibly high notes and also gives him insane amounts of range when singing.
Son, if you haven't listened to any Queen, in your lifetime, you are missing out on one of the most talented musical geniuses of all time. All of the band were creative but, Freddie Mercury was, by far, one of the most gifted creators of music who ever lived. His life was cut short by AIDS and the world is a sadder place without him.
I agree, I'm ashamed I never had a chance to see them perform in person at a concert, but I did hear and see a few broadcasts of them performing, and I and my cousins did watch their LiveAid performance. I just wonder what wonders and magic the four of them could have given us had he still been with us the past few decades.

There was a band in the 2010's that never got really big, but they carried a "Queen 2.0" vibe pretty well. Name totally escapes me right now. But the singer did a good job at sounding like his own style while you could CLEARLY catch the Freddie influence. There was a rock component similar to Queen, however they leaned into a kind of retro-funk style more, which gave them their own flavor. One of these days I'll remember the name, lol.

When they release “new music” they know young people will like it because they’ve heard it all before and they liked it last time. In the 70’s almost all music was experimental and lots of it was rubbish, but that is what you have to put up with to find the gems. Some people say it will come good again and I really hope they’re right. The same thing has happened to the movie industry in Hollywood. I can remember the days when a couple of great movies were released almost weekly, now it’s more like yearly.
Imagine being raised in a world where this was the base-line standard for performance and creativity. No auto-tune, no digital recording. Skill and imagination.

To be fair what we think of as autotune, pitch correction isn't always the bad thing people think of it as, and they did use it like most people in the industry, but that doesn't take away from their incredible talent!

He is an alto, not using falsetto. Falsetto involving forcing your voice to a higher register, it is Roger's normal signing voice. Alto is less common than bass, tenor or counter-tenor, and is closest to soprano for adult male voices. I used to sing in a choir so have known altos, this is what Roger is. Those who thinks he uses falsetto, tend not to be aware of this. He may occasionally use falsetto, though his normal singing voice is high in the register for adult males.

Greatest live band I've ever seen. I saw them live in Pittsburgh in 1974 (the only time they were here). Freddie Mercury owned the stage, greatest front man ever. I'll give Mick Jagger from The Rolling Stones #2, Rodger Daltrey of The Who probably #3. I've seen these bands all live and Freddie was the greatest. When I say greatest live band ever, that's coming from a guy who saw starting with The Beatles in Pittsburgh in 1964 at the ripe old age of seven. Seen them all with bands mentioned above along with The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd to name a few. One show I'll rank up there with a Queen performance and that's when I saw Simon & Garfunkel live at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh in 1990 on their one year reunion tour and easily the biggest Pot Party concert I've ever attended, it was a phenomenal show. I've been very fortunate, I guess being fortunate enough to be born in 1958 which allowed me to grow up with all of the incredible music in the sixties and seventies. I saw The Beatles at age six at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh in 1964, the only time they were here. One can never fully appreciate just how crazy Beatlemania was unless you witnessed it first hand. Saw the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Bob Dylan 5 times, Paul McCartney twice, Ringo and his traveling All Starr Bands 4 times. Fortunate enough to see George Harrison at the Civic Arena in 73 or 74 at the Civic Arena, only time he came to Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, John Lennon never toured so never saw him. For me, I'd say Queen was the greatest live band I've ever seen, Freddie owned the stage, greatest front man ever with Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones a close second and probably Rodger Daltrey of The Who. The most exciting event though was The Beatles. They had no front man, Lennon and McCartney were both front men. We know The Beatles were a great live band, problem was though is that no one could hear them but for energy and excitement they were unmatched. Like I said, Queen was the greatest live band ever in my opinion but the greatest concert I ever saw was at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh in 1990 and that was Simon & Garfunkel (Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel) who reunited for a US tour. If you're not familiar with them then ask your parents who they were. Between 1964-70 they were incredible. I would describe their genre as folk rock. They had a bunch of hits and their albums are all great. This show was 50,000 hippies just smoking pot, chilling and vibing out to this incredible duo and their back up band was great. Biggest outdoor pot party I've ever attended and it was all peace and love and an incredible show. Let me close with, I saw a biography on I think A&E a few years ago on Freddie Mercury and he stated that as a teen he was being trained as a classical pianist and an opera singer and then in 1963 he heard The Beatles song "She Loves You" on the radio and he knew right then that one day he would be in a rock band. That's how important The Beatles were and still are to popular music history. In just six short years they not only changed music history but also pop culture history. No Beatles, no Queen, no Stones, Floyd, Zeppelin, The Who, The Doors and the list goes on and on. They are by far the most CREATIVE and influential band in history. They showed the older generation that pop music could be much more than just catchy little boy, girl love songs. They showed that pop music could be an art form. Their studio recordings starting in December,1965 with the release of their iconic "Rubber Soul" Lp through their last Lp "Abbey Road" released in September, 1969 are unparalleled. Most I ever saw of them was Ringo Starr drumming on top of St George’s Hall in the city centre when we were given the 2008 European Capital of Culture award 😂 I never would’ve thought Simon & Garkunkel would top Queen performance wise but I do love their music and that show sounds like it’d be awesome. It’d definitely be the kind of show I would’ve enjoyed! My nan was born in 1950, so she grew up with all that great music and Beatlemania, but she got more into Queen and never seemed to show The Beatles that much attention - she always played lots of Queen when I was a kid, or Meat Loaf. I know Freddie had previously said his favourite artist was John Lennon, so I can imagine they will have had a huge influence on him growing up and I’m glad they did

I’m a 66 year old vocalist. IMHO, this is the finest piece of contemporary music written in the past 50 years-the rise and fall of the melody, key modulations, descants, tempo variations-and that’s not even counting the sophistication of the lyrics!! Once upon a time I was a choral singer, and I had a range of about 3 and a half octaves but it hit right at my break and I never had the talent to sing through it. 4 octaves AND powering through the break. Breathtaking.

I had the pleasure and honor of seeing Queen in concert 3 times and Freddy Mercury's voice was just as good live as it was recorded. There was no auto tune in those days and Freddy's range, pitch, and tone were astonishing.

The best part of that is that in the opening it is not Queen(Band Members) doing the Harmony it is ALL Freddy. Apparently they did so many overdubs that the Tape(yes tape) was near see thru.

So when they recorded this song, Freddie Mercury gave everyone only their parts of this song and then they recorded only their parts without hearing anything else. He then took this into the studio and layered all the parts together into this amazingness. Everyone thought he was crazy until they heard the finished song. He is maybe the most talented singer songwriter producer ever. And he loved every kind of music, he wrote songs that sound like they were written for Elvis, he wrote an opera aria for his favorite soprano about her home town. He was amazing.

While I obviously agree that Freddy was incredible, I would counter that Ronnie Radke also has a ridiculous amount of range. He has a beautiful voice, with a stunning falsetto, he can Rap in various tempos and styles, he can sing sustained Screaming and Growling while still remaining melodic, and he can perform Operatically (as seen particularly in his video I'm Not A Vampire Revamped).
Also there is proof of Bohemian Rhapsody's effect - watch the crowd at a Greenday concert in Hyde Park, 2017, sing it - they played Bohemian Rhapsody over the speakers and tens of thousand people singing all of Bohemian Rhapsody is amazing
Yes!! You MUST see the crowd at the Green Day concert in Hyde Park, London 2017. It's just the crowd(65,000+)....NO ONE is on the stage! Music is always played over the P.A. system in between bands, BUT when Bohemian Rhapsody starts playing......what happens is LEGENDARY and inspiring!! Freddie STILL had the crowd in the palm of his hands 27 years after his passing, all the way from Heaven.... It was so amazing that the band Green Day, themselves, posted it on their website to share with the world!! You'll NEVER see anything like it....
The best thing about it is that Greenday decided to continue playing it before their shows and it wasn’t just a one off occurrence in England. You can find videos of both American and Argentinian audiences singing along as the crew sets up the stage!!

Freddie had one of the very best voices in history, the other voice is Roger Taylor, the drummer. The lead guitarist is Brian May and bass is John Deacon. When they first wanted to release it EVERYONE said NO, it’s way too long, no one will play it, but Freddie insisted, the rest is history
I guess I'm doing this everywhere now, but I just have to say Brian is also one of the best singers I've ever heard. His voice just isn't standing out in a lot of Queen songs since he has a very soft, very "anti-rock" voices. I'd recomment checking out No one but you (Only the good die young) to understand the beauty of all of their voices. If you give credit to Roger, you must also give credit to Brian (and Deacy, but Deacy didn't sing lead).

Yes the record company were against this song as a single, so the band gave a copy to a radio dj friend who played it. Then his listeners kept on requesting it.
it was actually the amazing Kenny Everett (brilliant radio DJ) that Freddie played it to, because the radio stations wanted most of it to be taken out as its 6 minutes long, and Kenny said "don't lose any of it, you keep the whole thing" and promptly played it in its entirety, 3 times on the trot on his show.

@@clintonsmith5163 unfortunately sometimes we cannot get the truth out there. I have repeated this time and again. His singing was not the best to begin with, as said by Roger and Brian. But once he reigned his vibrato in he got progressively better. He would repeat and repeat his lyrics until he felt he got what he wanted from his voice, singing and sound. Freddie was a true professional through and through. They all were. This is how and why they played with precision in live concerts. Some singers have to work at their sound, as Freddie did. But as I always reply to people, he never had training or lessons. A remarkable man of talent.

Not only has it been one of the most played songs of all time for decades, it was literally every where when the rubbish film came out a couple of years ago. You'd have to live under an actual rock not to know it or be deaf, dumb and blind. But they have to pretend it's their first time and almost everyone else colludes in that illusion. I agree, I remember seeing this the first time on Top of the Pops when I was 21, I thought it was unbelievable. My husband who was 7 years older than me and heavily in to Buddy Holly couldn't work out whether he was a man or women because he wore dark nail varnish and a fur type jacket. Unfortunatley I never got to see Freddie live because we didn't have the money at the time but I am really excited because I am going to see Queen with Adam Lambert at the O2 in June - it's been postponed twice because of the pandeminc so hopefully I've not jinxed it and it will go ahead.
@@sue9922 We saw Q+AL about 5 years ago... then was due in 2020, then 2021 and also going to O2 in June. Adam addressed the "who is this Yank tw**? he's good, but he's no Freddie Mercury! BUT WHO THE HELL IS?!" with good humour. Adam is an incredible front man, too. Especially Who Wants to Live Forever.
Everyone thinks that because it was "before Autotune" that there was no enhancements. We had enhancements. We could fill in a weak, weedy voice, add reverb, tweak the highs, add distortion. The one thing we couldn't fix was if you were pitchy. And sorry, but there are times when even Freddie was pitchy. Pretty much anyone who sings will be pitchy once in a while.

Now you know why us baby boomers miss our “type” of music! This is what we grew up with! Freddy Mercury had one of the largest range in music to date, something like four octaves. The falsetto he picked out in the opera section was Roger Taylor. He did that in a lot of Queen songs, for example the intro to In the Lap of the Gods. As well as Freddie, both Roger Taylor and Brian May had great voices too. Edit: Rogers falsetto on In the Lap of the Gods, live at The Rainbow, is something else. You simply have to hear it and appreciate how awesome Rogers voice is.

Yes, Milton Keynes is wonderful, the entire concert offers many great performances. But please don't overlook their early 70's with Live at the Rainbow, and Live at the Odeon, Hammersmith. White Queen is a must see performance, along with You Take My Breath Away 1976 at Hyde Park

And a new Queen fan is born😈 Yes, that is his real voice. Yes, that is his voice, along with his band members voices (all very much real) in the back ground. All of Freddie's videos were before their time (check out I Want to Break Free). The drummer had the highest pitch and Freddie wasn't happy until Roger sang as high as he possibly could. Brian May is a guitar God! This was the longest song played on the radio when it was released and opened the door for longer songs. It almost wasn't put out there. But you should definitely check out more of their stuff.

Son, if you haven't listened to any Queen, in your lifetime, you are missing out on one of the most talented musical geniuses of all time. All of the band were creative but, Freddie Mercury was, by far, one of the most gifted creators of music who ever lived. His life was cut short by AIDS and the world is a sadder place without him.
I agree, I'm ashamed I never had a chance to see them perform in person at a concert, but I did hear and see a few broadcasts of them performing, and I and my cousins did watch their LiveAid performance. I just wonder what wonders and magic the four of them could have given us had he still been with us the past few decades.

There was a band in the 2010's that never got really big, but they carried a "Queen 2.0" vibe pretty well. Name totally escapes me right now. But the singer did a good job at sounding like his own style while you could CLEARLY catch the Freddie influence. There was a rock component similar to Queen, however they leaned into a kind of retro-funk style more, which gave them their own flavor. One of these days I'll remember the name, lol.

When they release “new music” they know young people will like it because they’ve heard it all before and they liked it last time. In the 70’s almost all music was experimental and lots of it was rubbish, but that is what you have to put up with to find the gems. Some people say it will come good again and I really hope they’re right. The same thing has happened to the movie industry in Hollywood. I can remember the days when a couple of great movies were released almost weekly, now it’s more like yearly.

To be fair what we think of as autotune, pitch correction isn't always the bad thing people think of it as, and they did use it like most people in the industry, but that doesn't take away from their incredible talent!

He is an alto, not using falsetto. Falsetto involving forcing your voice to a higher register, it is Roger's normal signing voice. Alto is less common than bass, tenor or counter-tenor, and is closest to soprano for adult male voices. I used to sing in a choir so have known altos, this is what Roger is. Those who thinks he uses falsetto, tend not to be aware of this. He may occasionally use falsetto, though his normal singing voice is high in the register for adult males.
Freddie can also get up there with him almost as high as him.

Greatest live band I've ever seen. I saw them live in Pittsburgh in 1974 (the only time they were here). Freddie Mercury owned the stage, greatest front man ever. I'll give Mick Jagger from The Rolling Stones #2, Rodger Daltrey of The Who probably #3. I've seen these bands all live and Freddie was the greatest. When I say greatest live band ever, that's coming from a guy who saw starting with The Beatles in Pittsburgh in 1964 at the ripe old age of seven.
Seen them all with bands mentioned above along with The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd to name a few. One show I'll rank up there with a Queen performance and that's when I saw Simon & Garfunkel live at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh in 1990 on their one year reunion tour and easily the biggest Pot Party concert I've ever attended, it was a phenomenal show.

I've been very fortunate, I guess being fortunate enough to be born in 1958 which allowed me to grow up with all of the incredible music in the sixties and seventies. I saw The Beatles at age six at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh in 1964, the only time they were here. One can never fully appreciate just how crazy Beatlemania was unless you witnessed it first hand. Saw the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Bob Dylan 5 times, Paul McCartney twice, Ringo and his traveling All Starr Bands 4 times. Fortunate enough to see George Harrison at the Civic Arena in 73 or 74 at the Civic Arena, only time he came to Pittsburgh.
Unfortunately, John Lennon never toured so never saw him.
For me, I'd say Queen was the greatest live band I've ever seen, Freddie owned the stage, greatest front man ever with Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones a close second and probably Rodger Daltrey of The Who.
The most exciting event though was The Beatles.
They had no front man, Lennon and McCartney were both front men.
We know The Beatles were a great live band, problem was though is that no one could hear them but for energy and excitement they were unmatched.
Like I said, Queen was the greatest live band ever in my opinion but the greatest concert I ever saw was at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh in 1990 and that was Simon & Garfunkel (Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel) who reunited for a US tour.

Between 1964-70 they were incredible. I would describe their genre as folk rock. They had a bunch of hits and their albums are all great.
This show was 50,000 hippies just smoking pot, chilling and vibing out to this incredible duo and their back up band was great. Biggest outdoor pot party I've ever attended and it was all peace and love and an incredible show. Let me close with, I saw a biography on I think A&E a few years ago on Freddie Mercury and he stated that as a teen he was being trained as a classical pianist and an opera singer and then in 1963 he heard The Beatles song "She Loves You" on the radio and he knew right then that one day he would be in a rock band. That's how important The Beatles were and still are to popular music history.
In just six short years they not only changed music history but also pop culture history. No Beatles, no Queen, no Stones, Floyd, Zeppelin, The Who, The Doors and the list goes on and on.
They are by far the most CREATIVE and influential band in history. They showed the older generation that pop music could be much more than just catchy little boy, girl love songs. They showed that pop music could be an art form. Their studio recordings starting in December,1965 with the release of their iconic "Rubber Soul" Lp through their last Lp "Abbey Road" released in September, 1969 are unparalleled.
Sorry Swifties but Taylor Swift couldn't make a pimple on The Beatles or any of these iconic bands asses.

Most I ever saw of them was Ringo Starr drumming on top of St George’s Hall in the city centre when we were given the 2008 European Capital of Culture award 😂
I never would’ve thought Simon & Garkunkel would top Queen performance wise but I do love their music and that show sounds like it’d be awesome. It’d definitely be the kind of show I would’ve enjoyed! My nan was born in 1950, so she grew up with all that great music and Beatlemania, but she got more into Queen and never seemed to show The Beatles that much attention - she always played lots of Queen when I was a kid, or Meat Loaf.
I know Freddie had previously said his favourite artist was John Lennon, so I can imagine they will have had a huge influence on him growing up and I’m glad they did

I had the pleasure and honor of seeing Queen in concert 3 times and Freddy Mercury's voice was just as good live as it was recorded. There was no auto tune in those days and Freddy's range, pitch, and tone were astonishing.

So when they recorded this song, Freddie Mercury gave everyone only their parts of this song and then they recorded only their parts without hearing anything else. He then took this into the studio and layered all the parts together into this amazingness.

While I obviously agree that Freddy was incredible, I would counter that Ronnie Radke also has a ridiculous amount of range. He has a beautiful voice, with a stunning falsetto, he can Rap in various tempos and styles, he can sing sustained Screaming and Growling while still remaining melodic, and he can perform Operatically (as seen particularly in his video I'm Not A Vampire Revamped).

Yes!! You MUST see the crowd at the Green Day concert in Hyde Park, London 2017. It's just the crowd(65,000+)....NO ONE is on the stage! Music is always played over the P.A. system in between bands, BUT when Bohemian Rhapsody starts playing......what happens is LEGENDARY and inspiring!! Freddie STILL had the crowd in the palm of his hands 27 years after his passing, all the way from Heaven.... It was so amazing that the band Green Day, themselves, posted it on their website to share with the world!! You'll NEVER see anything like it....

The best thing about it is that Greenday decided to continue playing it before their shows and it wasn’t just a one off occurrence in England. You can find videos of both American and Argentinian audiences singing along as the crew sets up the stage!!

FM was simply one of the greatest singing voices ever. A natural baritone with a 4 octave range.
Freddie had one of the very best voices in history, the other voice is Roger Taylor, the drummer. The lead guitarist is Brian May and bass is John Deacon. When they first wanted to release it EVERYONE said NO, it’s way too long, no one will play it, but Freddie insisted, the rest is history
I guess I'm doing this everywhere now, but I just have to say Brian is also one of the best singers I've ever heard. His voice just isn't standing out in a lot of Queen songs since he has a very soft, very "anti-rock" voices. I'd recomment checking out No one but you (Only the good die young) to understand the beauty of all of their voices. If you give credit to Roger, you must also give credit to Brian (and Deacy, but Deacy didn't sing lead).

Yes the record company were against this song as a single, so the band gave a copy to a radio dj friend who played it. Then his listeners kept on requesting it.
it was actually the amazing Kenny Everett (brilliant radio DJ) that Freddie played it to, because the radio stations wanted most of it to be taken out as its 6 minutes long, and Kenny said "don't lose any of it, you keep the whole thing" and promptly played it in its entirety, 3 times on the trot on his show.

Freddie was never trained to sing. He did practice and practice though to make himself better. He did however have piano lessons to grade 4.

@@clintonsmith5163 unfortunately sometimes we cannot get the truth out there. I have repeated this time and again. His singing was not the best to begin with, as said by Roger and Brian. But once he reigned his vibrato in he got progressively better. He would repeat and repeat his lyrics until he felt he got what he wanted from his voice, singing and sound. Freddie was a true professional through and through. They all were. This is how and why they played with precision in live concerts. Some singers have to work at their sound, as Freddie did. But as I always reply to people, he never had training or lessons. A remarkable man of talent.

Yeah exactly. You only have to be alive to know this song. Not only has it been one of the most played songs of all time for decades, it was literally every where when the rubbish film came out a couple of years ago. You'd have to live under an actual rock not to know it or be deaf, dumb and blind. But they have to pretend it's their first time and almost everyone else colludes in that illusion. It's pretty weird if you think about it lol. They're not really fooling anybody with half a brain and yet those people act like they genuinely believe it's their first time listening 🤔 thing is, they could easily say it's a review of a song they've heard and people would still watch.
The 'best' ones are those who say they've never heard it then start miming the lyrics or start head banging BEFORE the heavy rock part comes in lol.

I agree, I remember seeing this the first time on Top of the Pops when I was 21, I thought it was unbelievable. My husband who was 7 years older than me and heavily in to Buddy Holly couldn't work out whether he was a man or women because he wore dark nail varnish and a fur type jacket. Unfortunatley I never got to see Freddie live because we didn't have the money at the time but I am really excited because I am going to see Queen with Adam Lambert at the O2 in June - it's been postponed twice because of the pandeminc so hopefully I've not jinxed it and it will go ahead.
@@sue9922 We saw Q+AL about 5 years ago... then was due in 2020, then 2021 and also going to O2 in June. Adam addressed the "who is this Yank tw**? he's good, but he's no Freddie Mercury! BUT WHO THE HELL IS?!" with good humour. Adam is an incredible front man, too. Especially Who Wants to Live Forever.

Everyone thinks that because it was "before Autotune" that there was no enhancements. We had enhancements. We could fill in a weak, weedy voice, add reverb, tweak the highs, add distortion. The one thing we couldn't fix was if you were pitchy. And sorry, but there are times when even Freddie was pitchy. Pretty much anyone who sings will be pitchy once in a while.

Now you know why us baby boomers miss our “type” of music! This is what we grew up with! Freddy Mercury had one of the largest range in music to date, something like four octaves. He was the falsetto you picked out. You should check out his autobiography on utube. Explains him so well! I loved seeing your reaction to the musical genius of Queen!

The falsetto he picked out in the opera section was Roger Taylor. He did that in a lot of Queen songs, for example the intro to In the Lap of the Gods. As well as Freddie, both Roger Taylor and Brian May had great voices too.
Edit: Rogers falsetto on In the Lap of the Gods, live at The Rainbow, is something else. You simply have to hear it and appreciate how awesome Rogers voice is.

Yes, Milton Keynes is wonderful, the entire concert offers many great performances. But please don't overlook their early 70's with Live at the Rainbow, and Live at the Odeon, Hammersmith. White Queen is a must see performance, along with You Take My Breath Away 1976 at Hyde Park

Yes, that is his real voice. Yes, that is his voice, along with his band members voices (all very much real) in the back ground. All of Freddie's videos were before their time (check out I Want to Break Free). The drummer had the highest pitch and Freddie wasn't happy until Roger sang as high as he possibly could. Brian May is a guitar God! This was the longest song played on the radio when it was released and opened the door for longer songs. It almost wasn't put out there. But you should definitely check out more of their stuff.
