    I feel like he's underrating 1600ish players due to the fact that usually openings arent good, but as Ben Finegold says, openings under 2000 dont matter, because being slightly worse in an opening doesnt matter when your opponent blunders a piece at move 20 if you play solidly. I am around 1600 and I know very few openings.

    • @Hahahahaaahaahaa
      @Hahahahaaahaahaa 2 года назад +3

      Yup! A little higher than that and looking at my analyses it's always like 10 inaccuracies in a row in the opening 15 moves between us, but my wins (and losses) are all still blunders in the mid game (maybe not even a full piece, but just completely throwing the structure away for e.g. a bad pawn push). That being said I was shocked how quickly and accurately he got some of these.

    • @zwishking6032
      @zwishking6032 2 года назад +2

      also people on lichess typically are trash at openings for their skill level (meaning when I play people my level on other sites or irl they know openings better than average lichess players)

    • @Relisoc
      @Relisoc 2 года назад +3

      Finegold’s idea doesn’t make any sense imo. If you have opening knowledge and your (equally skilled) opponent doesn’t, you will have consistently have better midgame positions. Does finegold want people to just yolo their pieces out, hope they don’t get positionally crushed, then look for tactics? Why not just spend 3 minutes researching the correct way to play the first 5 moves so you can have a way better position and thus more tactical opportunities? If his argument is that having a good position doesn’t guarantee a win, then so what? Top GM’s can beat IM’s and lower rated GM’s with piece odds. Should 2000’s just play without bishops because pieces don’t matter until super GM level?

    Just take Game 1 for example, i dont think a regular viewer is keeping up with why white played well and responded to all the threats sufficiently to merit a 1500-1600 guess since, i dont wanna speak for others, but i really couldn’t see what happened in midgame unless i paused the video every second to see the position

It’s more engaging when you slow way down and talk about the moves, why a move indicates a certain ELO, why a move sucks, why it’s good, what would be better, etc.
