No he isn't ... "Old fashioned racing driver" is a funny way of saying overaggressive and rule breaking (remind you of anyone? 🦁🇳🇱). He was a solid midfielder and nothing more. I don't wish to criticise him because the level in F1 is very high and he was more than competent and on his day very very good, but please let's stop this revisionism.
I was about to get in here and drag The Race for doing what every other F1 media outlet does and judge a solid driver by the numbers alone. Glad to see someone else beat me, even with only 25 comments on the board. He's a solid dude and, as a driver, seems to thrive in the proverbial "street fights". F1's loss, sportscar racing's gain.
After his brief McLaren stint he wasn't considered again for any other major team. While I think that he's indeed brave, that should tell you something. Hulk didn't have much of a problem beating him twice.
Hulkenberg has never got a podium, but by his consistency as 38 year you can still see his better, than Magnussen is. Even Stroll got a podium before, but nobody thinks that highly of him. Sometimes getting a podium or even a race win comes down to luck, so it dosent mean they are that much better, than drivers without a podium, but it also depends on how good car you are given to drive.
@ getting good car is about your manager's skills these days ;) yes, Hulk is on average definitely better than Stroll and probably better than KMag, but he's got no F1 silverware on his shelf... Stirling Moss might have been best driver of his time, but these days he's remembered for not having won the title - as Hulk is atm best known for not making it to the podium although he raced in lot of races (when sorted by number of races the next guy who didn't make it to podium is Sutil with 100 less starts; also he is driver with most starts who hasn't won a race yet) ...
KMag is the Nordic Jean Alesi. A perennial fighter who always drove his guts out, was all heart, and never backed down from a squabble. Guys like these are loved because they embody the spirit of racing at its core.
Definitely agree there. And as a fan, this kind of driver is one of the most exciting to watch. In K. Mag's case though, his racing skill and/or car just couldn't keep up with his racing/competitive spirit and his ultimate results show that but we definitely need more drivers like him who will fight just as hard for position 15 as they would for a top 5.
@ His skills could _absolutely_ cash the checks his attitude wrote. TF is this? People like you probably said similar things about Sainz before he went to Ferrari, and look how well that run turned out.
Kmag's final battle with Albon ending with "fuck off" after he finally managed to get past was well earned and hilarious. As much as I love Albon, that was a beautiful way to end his career. Godspeed Kmag.
@y.a.p8951 Monaco crash, all the times he defended Hulk and penalties he got from it. The race ban. So i think having the same situation with Alonso and Kevin i think Kevin would have done the proper thing and made both parties crash 🤷♂️
I think Kevin will always be remembered as one of the last "old school" f1 drivers, someone who drives very aggresively, does what he can for the team and never cares about being penalized if it means a better result. It's a shame he never got a podium worthy car outside of 2014 but that's how it goes in F1
I'm old school enough to remember when drivers didn't get try to get penalties. He's more of a new school driver who was overly aggressive in relation to his level of talent, stuck around much longer than his career results should warrant, and even where having a known name matters more than said results.
He lasted as long as he did because a solid, decently quick midfield driver is someone who will usually not have too much difficulty finding a berth in F1. That's why Hulkenberg is still there too, and why Perez had such a lengthy career prior to him self-destructing in 2024. A known quantity, a safe pair of hands, call it what you will teams will always be interested in drivers like that. Not everyone can be a Fangio or Senna or Schumacher or Hamilton or Verstappen. As the video points out, only 34 drivers have ever won the World Championship so it's not really a realistic expectation to put on any driver. K-Mag parlayed a decent amount of talent into a decade-long career with some very good highs, and I think that's a great way for him to bow out and be remembered.
Haas saved his career. Haas saved Grosjean's career. Haas saved Hulkenberg's career. Now it might save Ocon's career as well. Haas really is a dog shelter of F1, safe heaven for rejected drivers. Not so much for rookies, though, so best luck to Ollie.
I like the closing sentiment, which is extremely important - the overwhelming majority of people could never even get a look into driving an F1 car. The fact that KMag, or any driver to be fair, makes it that far is a testament to their skill and passion for the drive. We need to do better as a community to remember this.

2014 australian gp was one of many false dawns mclaren had from 2013-22, after that race I genuinely thought mclaren were back. Little did I know that would be the last time a mclaren driver is on podium for 5 yrs and how bad it would get....
imagine how hyped up magnussen would be if he scored a podium on debut today. people already overglaze piastri and i wouldn't believe how crazy and unjustified hype train would be for magnussen.
It wasn't a false dawn. It just didn't suit him. He was never meant to be a podium queen. Everything about him was mid-field. Not because he wasn't good but because his prime motivation was to race wheel to wheel, to never concede and to always attack. It's not possible to live like that at the front so he lived in the middle where he could be himself. He'll be sadly missed cos he had the right stuff.
Shame it didn't work, same like his father who was even praised by Michael Schumacher in his junior career. But once in the Stewart in 1998, nothing seems to click. But just like Jan, i'm sure he'll find more success in other categories of Motorsport

K-Mag was maybe lucky enough to get that podium as McLaren was in a downward spiral. Looking back it was better that he didn't drove for McLaren in 2015 because he would spend most of the time retiring the car with engine issues. 😅 Too bad he never got a shot at a big team that was actually good. 😕

2014 australian gp was one of many false dawns mclaren had from 2013-22, after that race I genuinely thought mclaren were back. Little did I know that would be the last time a mclaren driver is on podium for 5 yrs and how bad it would get....
A depreciating asset 😮
It’s videos like this which make the race, great. Cold hard facts very well put together.
Definition of a dream start then faded to obscurity or a one hit wonder
imagine how hyped up magnussen would be if he scored a podium on debut today. people already overglaze piastri and i wouldn't believe how crazy and unjustified hype train would be for magnussen.
He deserved better ❤
It wasn't a false dawn. It just didn't suit him. He was never meant to be a podium queen. Everything about him was mid-field. Not because he wasn't good but because his prime motivation was to race wheel to wheel, to never concede and to always attack. It's not possible to live like that at the front so he lived in the middle where he could be himself. He'll be sadly missed cos he had the right stuff.
Kmag is the perfect embodiment of an average above average driver
Shame it didn't work, same like his father who was even praised by Michael Schumacher in his junior career. But once in the Stewart in 1998, nothing seems to click. But just like Jan, i'm sure he'll find more success in other categories of Motorsport
that haas without the uralkali sponsors is sexy
IMO dropping KMag for Ocon was a foolish move.
you’re not wrong
about to go from k mag doing any and everything to help his team to occon dive bombing the other haas off the road 😂
At worst it was a sideways move.
Ocon is a much better driver than Magnussen.
It's like hulkenberg in reverse if he ends with a podium
One of the coolest cats in F1.
I'm favoured financially with Bitcoin ETFs approval, Thank you buddy.$28,600 weekly profit regardless of how bad it gets on the economy.
Same here., I strongly agree that the Bitcoin ETFs approval will be greatly life opportunity for us, with my current portfolio of $102,500 from my investments with my personal financial advisor Steve Miley I totally agree with you😊
YES!!! That's exactly his name (Steve Miley) so many people have recommended highly about him and am just starting with him from Brisbane Australia...🇦🇺
He's my family's personal Broker and also a personal Broker to many family's in the United states, he is licensed and a FINRA AGENT in the United States.
The very first time we tried, we invested $1000 and after a week, we received 4500. That really helped us a lot to pay up our bills.
Steve Miley has really set the standard for others to follow, we love him in Canada🇨🇦as he has been really helpful and changed lots of life's
KMag was out there drivin like he aint even have kids.
If Formula One can male sprint to only for rookies and reserve drivers, this motorsport can be friendly for old drivers. Good bye, K-Mag! We will miss you here, and good luck with BMW! 🏎️🚗🏁🇩🇰
Very good career
My favourite driver 100% 💪
Enemy of the FIA since day one and never got the respect he deserved. Was beating both Red Bulls on merit until the infamous Haas pit stop in AUS 2018. And interesting to hear what he said about performance operating window in the current gen of cars; we certainly saw Hamilton suffer from the same issue. Can't wait to see what he does in other series.
He'll be an absolute boon to WEC driving the Big Sniffer.
Would've been great to have KMag in the second Red Bull in 2024
Thanks
Kmag is mah dude. Was not happy when Haas dropped him 🫤
*Gets dropped from F1
*Has existential crisis
*Goes to Renault
*Has another existential crisis
If you are driving in F1 and you don´t bring major backing, you are in the top 20 list of best current drivers in the world. It´s a huge achievement and people forget that too often. Big up Magnussen!
I’m a fan of the Viking. Its just too bad that he did not have the car to pillage for the wins.
My first thought was actually Kovalainen
Should be long gone... Open space for F2 Champions.
He is talented, he is entertaining, it was a privilege. Looking forward to him at BMW.
cant wait for le mans this year =)
i have a true hatred for ron dennis, he was the one who put mclaren into their horrible form from 2013 onwards until he left
Without Ron, McLaren wouldn’t even exist
Giancarlo Baghetti and Marcus Winkelhock.
Winkelhock wasn't so much of a false dawn, given that it was his only F1 race.
