    6 months ago i almost hit a kangaroo driving home just around the corner from my place. I live out west on Sydney just at the bottom of the blue mountains. The kangaroos you might see more on the outskirts of the city areas and semi rural. But of course out in the bush, country/farmland and outback you will come across roos and mych more wildlife.

    Wild life - we live in a suburb about 20 km north from Sydney. We get quite a few kookaburras along with parrots - rosellas and quorians in particular - and the magpie-like currawongs. For several years, we'd get repeat visits from a pair of quorians. They'd stop off in mid-spring and then return in late summer/early autumn accompanied by their chick. We used feed them using a special seed mix designed for them. We knew them and they knew us.

    While we don’t get much in the way of sub-zero (°C) temperature extremes, our weather is not always beautiful temperate sunny days though I guess statistically we do get quite a few of those. It’s a big country from the hot humid tropical northern summers to the frigid Antarctic winds of southern winters. We get skiable snow in winter in the alps of the south east and there’s a popular myth from the 1950s that we get “more snow than Switzerland” which is contradicted by snowfall data and has been busted many times over, but gets resurrected every year by the tourism industry and spirited Aussies unwilling to concede we have less of anything than somewhere else. 😅 Not long after this couple left Australia we had massive flooding around the east coast and Sydney region where I live, especially in 2022. Billions of dollars of damage was done. I travel a lot for my employment and good public transport is an expectation around most of the modern world - except in the USA!

    • @ToniaElkins
      @ToniaElkins  Месяц назад +3

      Oh I know it is! And I think there are city’s that’s trying to improve the public transportation here. It’s just that it would be nearly impossible to change our whole way of living. Towns are made with things so far apart that you have to Drive, you don’t have many choices. We do have public busses tho. And my town has an airport and a train station. The train here takes you directly to Chicago and St. Louis. So it’s not like public transport doesn’t exist here. Chicago has a great subway system. Same as New York and some other places, which makes sense, they’re large cities built for walking etc.

    Quokkas are in Western Australia, so unless they have them in a zoo (and I can’t remember seeing them in Taronga Zoo, Sydney, when I visited in 2016) you’re not going to see them. They roam free on an island called Rottnest off Fremantle WA.
    2019 would have been around the start of the pandemic, so they used that to get high usage of contactless payment or tap and go payment (because of germs).

    Can't say I agree with a lot of what they said, I've lived here for most of my life so maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy lol But I visited Sydney once in the 1980's and I couldn't wait to get out of there, it was too fast paced for me, if I had to compare to somewhere in the USA I'd say New York . True, Oz has a great Public Transport system but it's a wealthy country with much of the wealth coming from the mining industry, so the Commonwealth can afford top notch PT. Yes most of the cities are built near the beaches, but that wasn't so tourists could go 'wooo!' it's because of shipping. If you ever do come to Oz, there is something you have to try if you can handle the tropics 🙃 there's a place called Doctors Gully in Darwin, every afternoon people go to the beach there and feed wild fish in the ocean as if they were tame pets, it's the strangest thing I ever did. There may be something about it here on YT that you can watch IDK.
