Most of Winston Churchill's words were bluff, there were times when he was sure we were beaten but never let it show. Misinformation can never be condoned BUT Churchill had the freedom of the whole planet on his shoulders and so has to be given some leeway.
The character making the video while under a veil of legitimacy seems to be encouraging law breaking. If he is not then why not encourage people to show proof of their claim and let the inspectors move on to real law breakers and save time, paperwork and help keep the cost down for us that are paying.

Elderly neighbour had a capita salesman at her door this Wednesday, who told her that "all this nonsense on the internet" was rubbish, that if you had a television set you HAD to have a tv licence or you could go to prison, that he had the same powers as a police constable, and that "there was no such thing as The Broadcasting Act 2003", and that the police were "on their way right now". Fortunately, he had picked the toughest, most switched on old bird on the estate, and she sent him packing with his scaly tail between his legs, but, so much for 'knowledgeable and polite', like. Interesting that she lives in a street with a large number of young, unlicenced couples, and they singled out a 71 year old widow for an "enforcement visit". Speaks volumes, really.

I moved in with my girlfriend and didn’t renew my TV licence because she had one. I still owned my old flat. TV licensing couldn’t comprehend that I might not have a TV in an empty flat that I didn’t live in. Letters, visits, visits to my neighbours, phone calls… it went on for over a year. Incidentally, when I worked for Granada TV rentals we had to fill out a TV licensing book for every set we installed. TV licensing only checked those addresses against the licence database. At some point they switched to assuming everyone in the UK had a TV and started pestering everyone.

In the USA I had a friend back in the 80s who was a bit of a tech. He wired cable to everyone in his apartment complex who wanted to pay a much reduced fee for the ultimate cable package. Apparently it paid for all his computer goodies. A mutual friend of ours also created an over the air rebroadcast system for his neighborhood, something similar to Z Channel. He used a Commodore computer to post a channel/show listing that scrolled automatically. I had it fairly easy as far as watching TV, while in school, I worked security at a "head end" of a cable company. We had huge satellite dishes and broadcast towers. The crew set my place up with their premium package. Later I worked for the first Internet company in our county.

I used to love Doctor Who but now it's rubbish, I got no reason to have it. They sent me a letter today (first one in my new address) There's so many reasons not to have one. I loved that you brought up the question of 'TV detector' vans - it stands to reason that your TV is essentially a receiver, and not broadcasting, and therefore cannot send any signal for any sort of van with an aerial ( hah!) to receive. I"ve had conversations with relatively intelligent people, who insist that a TV 'transmits' a signal, even what channel you are watching, back to the van. Has anyone ever even seen a van? Its all utter nonsense, and doesnt bear any scrutiny whatsoever. Like you touched on, information received at the MC's is derived soley upon what you have admitted to?

I don't have a TVL. Don't need one. Period. My genuine TV set is not hooked up as I only view DVDs on subscription with Cinema Paradiso rentals. When I visit my mother who has a Freesat box full of hundreds of channels I cannot find anything interesting to watch anyway so again it reinforces my decision not to bother as I have done for years! I click and click through her channels; the thing is, I'm not familiar with what's available so find it totally bizarre that you can trawl through the on-screen TV Guide or channel by channel and for a nanosecond whilst on BBC 1, 2 etc. technically one legally requires a licence (well I haven't actually "viewed" it anyway, have I, as I moved straight on?) whereas on loads of other stations I actually and genuinely don't "require" one! At this point how am I supposed to know which is which??? Where does it make that clear officially (apart from listening to CJC?)? I'm aware that online if you go into BBC iPlayer it brings up a box asking Yes or No, Do you have a licence - so why can't the TVs do the same? Then you'd know which ones to avoid if you're genuinely LLF???

So would a proportion of TV licence go to all the other channels? How can the BBC determine that something aired on another channel entitles them to money?

One very big question for Capita/BBC is,does any of the license fees paid to any independent tv companies and foreign tv companies and if so how much money is being paid to those companies. If none of the licenses fees are being paid to the Independent tv companies then the fees are just a big scam and illegal.
According to the letter from the TV LICENSING people, you can pay by payments starting from £6.00 a week. So if you equates that there’s 52weeks in a year then it will cost you £312.00 per year which is almost double the of the tv license of £159.00 which is definitely a very big scam and should be made illegal.

I recently cancelled my TV licence as I wanted it changed from my name to my wife's name, got a refund also,I then purchased a new license in her name and printed off said license. Fantastic, now if anything happens to me, ie have another heart attack and not survive, my wife wouldn't have to worry, done and dusted; I thought,? I have since received a letter telling me to renew as I cancelled, and they were sending an inspector around to my home to discuss the situation?? and could end up with a fine or even imprisonment!!! I'm still laughing.Should I show them the new license, or just close the door I wonder.

Another thing, on the back of the threating letter you can request it in brail, to do this is expensive for crapeter, so i highly advise everyone to request this.
    And perhaps in Welsh to.

My first thought that this has been written on behalf of Capita. It contains the usual Capita lies 1) If you own a TV you need a license 2) It talks of the mythical TV vans and handheld machines 3) It says you need to let in "visiting officers" , answer questions and sign a form * I would say it is very good bet that Capita put this person up to writing it*

I suspect her "strong background in technology" may be as strong as her command of the English language and a writer of any form, even a "Tech writer", should really raise their game above the level of semi-literacy.

The original licence was to have equipment capable of receiving TV broadcast , that was changed when the current legislation came into force , The home office was the original licence issuer through the GPO , until the BBC themselves became responsible , in 2006 the licence fee was reclassified as a Tax , hence it being applicable to all live channels not just the BBC,

And why should I pay to watch stuff the BBC has been replaying for years.

‘Christina’s’ advice is extremely dangerous. The implication in her article is that when a person, any person, claiming to be from the television licensing department, demands entry into your home you are obliged to let them in. You are not. This woman should be severely rebuked by any and all organisations that represent elderly people. She is implying that householders have no powers to refuse entry, which is false and potentially an invitation to criminals to exploit the vulnerable. Thank you very much for pointing this out.

As for me, I am not worried about being caught watching TV illegally, on the grounds that I don`t watch TV illegally - which means no one is ever going to catch me watching TV illegally.
Having said that, when my TV packed up 11 years ago I decided to see how I`d get along without a TV, finding other forms of entertainment. I cancelled my license, and lo & behold a charming old fella from Licensing turned up asking if he may check that I am not in possession of a TV and wathching TV without a license. I let him in and he left satisfied that I was not breaking the law.
But I had no idea that this process would be repeated every couple of years. To hell with that. It will take a Police Force for any `TV Licensing Enforcement Officer` to enter my home again on the pretext that they are knocking at my door to - essentially - check that I am not breaking the law.
I am not breaking the law and I don`t have to prove to The Queen, let alone anyone else, that I am not.

For home security reasons door intercoms and video systems like the RING video door bell are popular.
Don't open the door! Since the video systems go over the cellphone you can lie! You have no obligation to tell the BBC sales types the truth! All they see is a camera lens and hear your voice over a tiny speaker.
When you're told they are with BBC licensing tell them you are in Canada on business for the next nine months and you will be happy to contact them when you return. If thay come back before 9 months tell them you have picked up a quaint Canadian expression "Take off, hoser!".

The British Government definitely understand that sending police officers out with so called licence inspectors costs taxpayers money. Clogging up the magistrates courts with silly little fines costs taxpayers money. The BBC should make the big move to advertising and other investment opportunities to be able to bring in all their running costs and more. There will be a huge amount of celebration the day the BBC become independent and cancel the need for the overpriced TV Licence.

Just write to TV Licensing and say that you are "withdrawing their implied right of access to your property," If any of their goons show up again, take a note of the date, time and, if possible, the name of the goon. After 4 or 5 visits, again write to them and state that any more harrassment of this nature will result in them hearing from your solicitor and will result in a civil court claim for compensation, or a private prosecution for criminal harrassment. They don't know if you can afford to pursue any form of private prosecution, but do you think they would take the risk of being found guilty of a criminal act. Good luck.

Many years ago I was collecting money on an estate when the cup final was due to kick off. Mindful of my safety, I was determined to stop as soon as the whistle started the game. However, a recent immigrant who did not understand our `foibles` in the UK, was also knocking on doors. Having stopped knocking at the appropriate time, I now stood watching, fascinated, as he ploughed on down the street, during the `sacred time`; ringing bells and banging knockers. One guy opened the door and screamed in his face, "The cup finals on, clear off!" and then slammed the door!
