Fixing The Tesla Model Y Flaw

- Fixing the model Y flaw is not cheap but is it worth it? Why is this not included with all Tesla models? Unfortunately I don’t have the answer to that but here’s a quick run down on the ordering process for Homelink and how the install went as well as our first use of it which went great.

Very nice! I will get this eventually but for now just bought $3 double sided velcro + tape and stuck the door opener to the back of the display in the car. Gets the job done :)
That's a great idea!
My 2018 model 3 came with homelink pre-installed. One of the most convenient features of the car. I agree, for the price of the car, it should be included from the factory.
Thats cool you got lucky to have it installed already! Its definitely super convenient.
Glad you ordered the HomeLink! I love this HomeLink, which worked so well for my Model 3 too. It is awesome that my garage automatically closes when I leave home, and automatically opens when I arrive home!
Yes we're loving it!
Nice added feature. I think they used to have those in their cars as standard but they discontinue it in 3rd quarter of 2019.
crazy they don't include it
D-Mode is used if the device you're pairing with doesn't have a remote available but has a "Learn" or "Program" button. It allows you to program the vehicle to communicate directly with the device's receiver without having to pair a remote first. If Standard Mode is working there's no need to switch to D-Mode.
Thanks for the info!
It's not a flaw. It still is an optional accesory. Not everyone need or uses a garage opener. What I believe instead, is that you should be able to select it when ordering if needed, and have it installed upon delivery, not having to schedule a service appointment afterwards.
Yes it definitely needs to be a option when ordering and I have no idea why its not.
@@chadlunsford9573 specially if it’s a 5 minute installation. The tow is even more complicated and it’s done before delivery
isnt D mode about the type of codes used by the garage door? Some are rolling and others fixed?
We just had ours installed today. Works great!! When it arrived I opened the package... When the Tesla Tech showed up today My wife called me freaking out wanting to know where the box was. Of course I threw it out 4 days ago.... The Tech was cool and installed the Homelink with no issues. In my defense our package didn’t have all those warning labels on it.
Oh wow!
Should have just installed a wifi garage door motor like I did. I installed it myself and for only $199.
I got mine installed in my Y a couple weeks ago. My friend has a model S and turned off the auto open as he was leaving his garage open all the time. I have it on for my HOA gate which is very cool and I manually open the other two doors.
As of right now the auto open and auto close have been working great and we have been loving the convenience of it.
I will be switching to Tesla by 2030-2035 by then I will have a wide variety of technology and car models to pick from this home link feature is cool !
That is good device to be added to Tesla Y. I will get one when I buy a house :) 👍
It really is!
We bought a Nexx unit that geo locates the phone. $60 and it works like a charm.
Make sure you check if your garage motor is compatible guys before purchasing. I wanted one for my gate and garage but they aren't compatible so still using the old fobarooney....🙄
Good point!
There sometimes is an adapter available that accepts the homelink frequency and transmits in the frequency your device uses. I remember I found one for my old Aleko gate opener a long time ago. Maybe they have something that would work similar for you
I ordered one before our MY was delivered thinking this was a great feature I had to have. So a Mobil Tech came and installed it, after programming I thought I was good to go. Turns out it wouldn’t work with an “older” gate system for our sub-division, and then if I depart to run an errand it closes the garage door on my way out so I need to keep an eye on the screen for the “small” pop up box to cancel the closing. Then there are times that after I leave my wife goes out to do yard work and opens the garage door and as I’m approaching I have to keep an watch for the pop up box to stop the opener from “closing” the door. If you miss it the door closes and has to be manually overridden. So it’s not all milk and honey.
Good points. Thanks for sharing.
What! I'm nothing is milk and honey fir you.
This is a great feature or not. Use or dont
There is a good reason this is not standard: Not all car owners have a garage. This is true in most major American cities (as opposed to suburbs) and likely is the case for the vast majority in China and Europe. Adding a part not of universal value would needlessly increase base costs.
The good reaso. Os they got CHEAP.
Your reason is a cop-out.
They have many features installed in the car that people aren't using.
I open the garage door with my watch. I got a GarageMate for $60, installed it myself, and I can use my iPhone or Apple Watch. I can also open the door from anywhere in the yard, car or no car.
The truth is someone has a patent on HomeLink. That means royalties have to be paid out. My guess is Tesla strategically decided to help reduce costs by offering it to people who wanted HomeLink in order to pass savings on to others. By having customers pay for it directly it still gives an option, and frankly a better experience because you get a Tesla mobile tech to install it and configure it for your garage opener. My Lexus had it built in, but I had to fumble and try to connect it to our garage opener. Plus I’m sure the cost was baked into the Lexus even if some don’t use it.
Ok now it makes since. Thanks for sharing.
Great feature. However, not sure if I always want my garage to open when I drive up to it. Maybe if I was living out in a field but in a neighborhood where maybe you were being followed or for whatever reason you don’t want the garage to open, I wouldn’t want it to open on its own. Is there a disable feature?
Yes you can switch to manual mode
50-60 car in a neighborhood you are worried about opening the garage door???
Don't spend the money on the car and move into a better neighborhood
Can you video test the distance settings to see if it opens when the car is further from the garage door? Multiple car door choices?
Yes you can do multiple doors and the range can be extended to open via the touch screen in the car. Ill check the max distance and update you.
Hello! Awesome review! I agree this should’ve been included....
Hey, thanks!
surprised it's not included, also they need to include apple car play or have it as an option to have a touch screen in behind the steering wheel.
Was the installation free after your purchase?
Yes, the $300 price includes installation by mobile service.
Random question, do you tip the Mobil service person?
No tip they are paid hourly so I don't think they are expecting a tip.
Pretty cool purchase. For myself I couldn’t splurge on that price so I did put in a garage opener on my visor. But it is a bummer that this isn’t an option to be added as I am a custom to having this feature on my Dodge diesel ram also on my Audi A6. Now that I think about it all of my vehicles in the past have this option. Like I mention cool purchase but totally can’t splurge on that price ha ha ha it would be spent on shopping ha ha Also Love your wife hair :)
lol yea shopping does sound like a better option then a garage door opener but i must say we have been enjoying the convenience of it so far and its been working great with no issues. Kels says thank you for the hair comment
Splurge??? You spent over 50k on the car and you can't "splurge" on $300
Seems like you have to add $$$ to make the car your own. I am thinking of a new one. But so many issues that with a new car one shouldn’t have. As soon as I decide to sell my 2015 Camry (which I love - never had a problem with it ) I am going to get the model 3 Long Range. But to pay 50K++ and have a a G/door opener ....sort of not right.
Yes I 100% agree that the garage door opener should be included its such a simple little device that should come with the car from the factory. as far as switching to Tesla I don't think you'll regret it and they will just keep getting better over time.
Just my point of view I absolutely love the model Y for it’s simplicity. But unfortunately the amount of defects that I got on my particular car was not acceptable I’ve had over 20 things to point out for example the inside of the interior was extremely dirty with fingerprints another issue was I did opted for the third row on the model Y and the backseats do not function correctly to set down. Then keep in mind the whole 3rd back row was slashed and cut in the back seats. Another issue that I had was the tail lights did not lineup the front hood was not lined up. The passenger top left side of the hood has a dent. Multiple pieces inside the vehicle were not aligned correctly and are not able to clip back on. Also keep in mind the vehicle was in the color black there was nothing but swirl marks and buffing spots that were missed. I was the individual that was trying to return the vehicle within three hours of delivery and was unsuccessful I was not able to return the vehicle. I have a 2020 Camry that let me tell you it was half the price of what I paid for this model Y and it was used car and not one problem with it. Learned my lesson obviously next time around I will go back to buying what I normally stick to which is an Audi car.
@@sarahcid6530 Makes you wonder, would go up in a Space X rocket? LOL...
@@iraAlbucher ha ha ha ha
@@sarahcid6530 I have a 2015 Camry that I was going to trade / sell and go for the Model Y.. But after hearing what you went through and especially during COVID, I will wait a little longer (since my Camry doesn’t ever breakdown ) for Toyota to roll out their EV , as we know they are into QC big time.
Hi can you hey the brake pedal to close the driver door? For the model Y
Does anyone know if this Home Link system works with more than one opener? Ex. 2 individual garages or 1 garage, 1 gate entry.
Yes it does
Can it be set to manual open. Auto open may be a home invasion nightmare...
Yes you can set it to manual and disable the auto open.
Was the service tech coming out included in the $300?
Yes its included
@@chadlunsford9573 good!
What if the garage door is already opened? Does it recognize it or does it still send the command and thus closes the garage door again?
It closes it but prompts you first and you can override
Nexx is cheaper and very easy install.
Not a flaw, but an add-on feature. They don’t want you opening because static electricity can ruin the part
Don’t blame Tesla. It’s Homelink that is charging every automaker a licensing fee. All of the others car makers charge around $300 as well so the charge is not out of line. I ordered the part as well and it includes the Tesla service labor to install it under the frunk section of the car and install the software. I think it’s worth every penny and goes with the high tech theme of a Tesla. I have programmed ours to automatically open/close 50’ away from our casa and I also turned on the chime setting every time it opens or closes.
A $50k+ car that doesn’t include a garage opener
If the price was raised by $300 you would have a ton of people bitching they don't have garages and don't need it. $300 was worth it me and a lot of others. Most of the complainers aren't owners.
I'll save the $300. I don't mind pressing one button.
My 2015 Models S has it built in and it only cost me
$101k
Lol
Lol nothings in the box. Its software unlocked.
