What gets me about this is less than a decade later he dies. Seeing the comeback special is so bitter sweet. Sweet because its just amazing and so hopeful. Bitter because you know what's coming and the rate of his demise. Its heartbreaking
The most passionate performance I have ever seen.
Elvis sings with his SOUL and his whole body.
It is transcendental.....
Happy birthday seph
Couldn't agree more and Thank you ❤️🎉🍻
One of the greatest music performances of all time.
And this is how it sounds when Elvis is the boss of the music his doing 💪💪💪
This is why he will always be the "King" of rock and roll. This song was written due to the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. which happened just miles from Graceland where Elvis lived. It is my favorite Elvis song.
Thanks for sharing this video.
And Robert Kennedy everyone forgets him but i never will.
Elvis was talking to Steve Binder about how felt about the situation in America. Binder then asked Earl Brown to sum what Elvis said in a song. This was the result.
The man was a genius haha
So are you!❤@@SephPlays
Elvis requested a red tie/scarf to honor blood shed and soldiers who were killed in Vietnam. He is really something else!
once the cameras went black, he actually collapsed in tears from all the emotions he poured out as he sang
Iconic performance by Elvis. He took his voice to new places for passionate expression. I’ve always felt his gospel influence in his delivery. Almost like a pastor in his white suit and calling in the flock while his arm repeatedly goes back and forth..🙏 What you missed at the end by stopping the video a moment too soon, was his humble, ‘Thank you, good night.’. Pure Elvis.❤️
Ohh yeah im gutted i missed that 😅
Be sarcastic if you like, but appreciating Elvis, includes his personality.
That's why he is THE KING OF ROCK! HE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL IT! GREATEST ENTERTAINER EVER EVER AND EVER! LUV ❤️ 😍 TO THE KING!!!
Couldn't agree more 😍
a title given to him by white people.
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 Not just white but black community also.
@@donnaqueen8766 no black artist gave Elvis the title king of rnr. that title was given to him by white people.
@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 I understand that but the black community understood why. Elvis never did want to be called that . He said there is only one, Jesus
The red tie means all the blood shed in wars at that time
Elvis was a genius at his craft. A gift from God and for us he gave his all. One of the greatest songs ever written and sung by the Worlds greatest performer. Great reaction, keep them coming please.
Couldn't agree more!
this was done live in an empty studio as the studio's punishment for him refusing to back down & sing this song in honour of dr.king & bobby kennedy..
Elvis grew up in the church & specifically in a black church that was near his home which welcomed hiim & his mother..
gospel music was his absolute favorite & he had the largest collection of gospel music in america at one time...
the network was opposed to his doing this song but he had so much respect & admiration for dr. king & took inspiration from him he stood his ground & basically said no song.. no special..
the infulence of his church upbringing is so up front in this performance ( the white suit) & he literally did take us to church with this
Thank you for sharing such an honest & heart touching reaction with us
check out his performance of how great thou art the best video version is of him in a blue jumpsuit from 1972
Oh my goodness he was incredible ❤
Many believe this was Elvis’s greatest performance. He was so devastated when MLK was assassinated and he never sang this song again.
This is the turning point for Elvis, where he sings only the songs he wants to sing. A very happy birthday to you. I know you're enjoying your Elvis birthday present. Others below have described the significance of this song to Elvis so I won't. When you see the whole 68 special show, you'll see one of the best, if not the best, performers of all time.
I can't wait to see it all 😀 and Thank you ❤️🎉🍻
Elvis put everything he had into this song.....very emotional. Great reaction Seph and Happy Birthday!!!!!🎂
Yes he did! 😊
And thank you 🎉🍻❤️
Happy Birthday Seph! What a phenomenal Performance! ELVIS put all his feelings and emotions in this song it's incredible! Yes, i had Goosepumps too! ELVIS is from another Planet! Thank you Seph !
You can really feel the emotion in this one right!? Stunning song!
LOVE Elvis no one else in my book comes close. I hope and pray for his granddaughters the press leaves alone. Let them live a long and fulfilled life please
Im with you on this one!
After recording this song in the studio elvis said
"From this day on I'm never recording a song I don't care for again"
And for the most part he stayed true to that promise. The 70s had amazing songs and a few mediocre ones but all of them were songs elvis wanted to do
Yeah this would explain a few songs I've heard haha 😅
…Elvis was the first and the best! ... A millennium singer for eternity ... ✨💎✨ Thank you
Happy birthday Seph. Greatest performance ever. Watched it thousands of times. Phenomenal. Only the king could do this.
I couldn't agree more!

I can't tell you how much i love and miss him, there is not a day that goes by that i don't think of him and all the memories we made in 10 short years, his death knocked the wind out of me and the funeral broke me. i have never been the same since, Elvis was the big brother i never had. He is also my guardian angel. Graceland is my go to place when it get's to hard to live w/o my friend i go there and walk around and remember Elvis and all the beautiful times we had together. He was the only person in my life that understood me and cared about my feelings and opinions. What it comes down to is we both needed a true friend and we were that for each other. Awesome reaction. Elvis told me all the time you should always know where you stand with people now i know what he meant.
Its truly stunning how many peoples lives this man changed for the better in same way shape or form! Truly stunning individual!!
His jewelry & suit is seriously understated in this video! He used to wear huge diamonds on EVERY finger! 😂♥️

Man. I love your reaction to Elvis. He is non- human. I love him so much. Thank you for your reaction, you are amazing.😂
U can tell he put all his heart & soul into this song b/c at the end when he says thank u & good night he is out of breath
Have a fantastic birthday. 🍷🍰
I think we can safely say that you are the most dedicated Elvis Reactor on youtube. I don't think nobody else would have the patience and resolve to listen to all his recorded songs in order from the beginning .
If Elvis could see this, he would probably reward you for your devotion with a brand new shiny cadillac as a birthday present. 🚗
Or the gold TCB⚡️Chain👌💕🕺
Im still a little shocked that no one else on RUclips is doing this.
And its a crying shame that 95% of them only ever do like 5 songs of his and then dont bother listening to any more... They are missing out ya know?
@SephPlays they truly are!!! Elvis still has a huge fan base, and it's growing even bigger with the success of Baz Luhrman's Elvis film. New generations are now curious about Elvis and seeking content so if I was a creator building a channel, Elvis content is a no brainer!
The red tie was chosen on purpose to represent the men who were dying in Vietnam.
I wish i knew the story behind this song going into it!
@@SephPlays I understand that. That was a hard time in America. I was 13 when JFK was assassinated and I dearly loved him. Then 1968, April, Martin Luther King Jr. murdered and beginning of June RFK was murdered. Elvis had a lot of respect especially for Martin Luther King Jr. and it hurt that it happened in Memphis, not so far from his home. Then we had men spilling their blood in Vietnam. I read an article that said, I think, Binder, not sure, went out and bought the red scarf to signify the blood shed weekly in Vietnam. You know that song, If I Can Dream was written rather quickly. Amazingly.
Happy birthday to you Seph and thankyou for giving us this reaction. Iconic performance from Elvis...he poured out his heart and soul and left us with an anthem that will be a symbol of hope for years to come. ❤
Couldn't say it better myself!
And Thank you ❤️🎉🍻
It's crazy how many times elvis voice changed. 68-69 you get a raspy, rich voice. (I think it's better than the movies era voice)
Cette merveilleuse chanson est plus que jamais d'actualité.
Si plus de gens écoutaient Elvis, nous aurions sans doute la paix dans le monde.
I see you got a new t-shirt for the occasion.👍 Nice reaction to one of the most iconic song and performance of The Elvis. The growl in his voice is something special at this time and the depth. A stunning performance that ended his 68 Comeback Show, you missed the last few seconds when he was talking. A great birthday gift for you and us watching. The Colonel wanted him to end the show with a christmas song, but Elvis insisted on doing this instead. Both Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King was shot and killed in 68. MLK was shot a couple of months before this in Memphis Elvis hometown, Elvis was very upset about this and worried about where things were going in the US. He spoke about this and they wrote the song for him to sing for his final number. Seph now you know the power hes possessing, he sings with all his body and soul straight to yours. The more you get to know about him as a person and him as the singer and entertainer the more you will love him. Following you going deeper and deeper into The Elvis is so exiting and fun, I enjoy every second. Hip Hip Hooray!!!
Yes!! The last few seconds after the song, Seph!! Elvis says so beautifully, "Thank you, goodnight." IT'S LOVELY!!
I think you are the only person who spotted my birthday present haha 🎁
I adore my new t-shirt haha
And omg i WISH i knew this before i watched this 😢 i never made the connection between MLK and these lyrics at all.
It would have been a very very different reaction if i had known 😢
@@SephPlays I was just rewatching this reaction and wanted to give you a little additional background info. If you don't know who Robert Kennedy was, he was John Kennedy's brother, a presidential candidate in '68, and a huge supporter of civil rights. As for the connection between Elvis and MLK Jr., they had spoken on the phone and Elvis suppoted the civil rights movement with many donations. Elvis had a copy of MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech framed and displayed in his home. He also played the recording for people often, and his girlfriend at the time said Elvis loved reciting the speech for people. Watching this (no spoilers) will give you insight on how much performing this song meant to Elvis and will make it even more meaningful: Martin Luther King & Elvis Presley - "THEY HAD A DREAM" - (50th anniversary) 2018 (8:02).
@@SephPlays I spotted this right away! The first appearance of the SEPH PLAYS custom tee! Fantastic!
Happy birthday Seph. This is a very powerful/emotional song. My eyes tear up every time I watch it. Elvis was very sad over the two assassinations in 1968. He wanted all the people to live together in harmony.
I wish i knew this before listening to this song! My reaction would have been very different! 😢
This man is not a result of mere genetics. God did this.
If you want to blow your mind, listen to the following by him:
Hurt, Rags To Riches, Forever My Darling, and Elvis Acopella.
And PLEASE don't interrupt his singing with your comments. Wait until the end. It takes away from his unbelievable performances.
He was a GIFT.
i dont know if you know but i'm reacting to all his songs in chronological order i started in 1953 and im now up to 1963
And I'm going to go ahead and say that this is definitely not the channel for you Raymond. Because i pause an ungodly amount of times during all his songs and i dont plan on changing for anyone :P
Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination (just 9 miles away from Graceland, Elvis‘s home). The white suit was also worn to accompany the song’s dream for better days. At the time, the conflict in Vietnam was heart wrenching. In remembrance, of the lives lost during the Vietnam war. The burgundy colored scarf Elvis wore around his neck was for them.
And Robert Kennedy
I absolutely LOVE your reactions to Elvis’ songs!!! Thank you so much for sharing these with us!!! 😻❤️😻❤️😻❤️
Thank you so much Karen :D
Happy Birthday Seph! 🎉🎂🎈🎉🎈
Been waiting for this-
This was written by Earl Brown. It was a beautiful message song as MLK was assassinated 2 months prior 8 miles from his home & then Kennedy being shot. His voice is impeccable but the passion & pain coming thru is breathtaking!
Hope you have a wonderful birthday! 🎉🎈🎉🎈😊
Thank you for mentioning Kennedy -- so few people do.
I think it would have been more impactful if i had known this before hand 😢 thats the only issue about doing reaction videos... I don't get to do *Any* research before the video starts because it would ruin the reaction 😭
And thank you Carrie ❤️❤️❤️
I knew you would like that! Elvis just sings that with so much passion and he is so beautiful. The message is something everyone needs to hear we all need it. Happy birthday Seph
Im really looking forward to hearing this one again in the future actually!

Happy Birthday, this is a present for us. Thank you so much for reacting to this wonderful tribute to MLKjr. He was very determined to do this song against all odds. He actually treated it with sacred reverence and never sang it in public again. You make my day, thanks again for your wonderful efforts to keep Elvis alive. Have a special day.
I wish i had known this was a tribute to MLK going into the song! It would have hit me very very differently! 😢
Simply one of the greatest live vocal performance ever recorded on film.
They played this iconic song on BBC radio 2 the other day. There was distinct intakes of breath and a respectful moment after it was played. I bet if Elvis released it today it would rush straight to No 1 worldwide.This was such a worthy winner of your Birthday Choice⚡️⭐️. Love seeing your appreciation and Heart in mouth moment whilst hearing this phenomenal song. Thank you so much. Remember Elvis had not performed live for 10 years because of his 2 years away in Germany followed by 8 years making films. So he was very nervous about this show. It certainly fired him up to take on live shows again. From now on, he is the conductor and producer of all his music with his top musicians and the best backing singers. 👌💕🕺
Wow, how cool about the BBC radio play. Wonderful!! And yes this song is SO WORTHY of Seph's birthday celebration!! 🙂
Not strictly correct as he did 3 shows in 1961, and was the Sinatra Welcome Home show 1960 in a way similar to this one, but I know what you mean, he was sure nervous after such an absence.
@@gorse9030 true but I meant with audiences bigger than a studio. They were tiny appearances really before the films took over 👌💕🕺
This just proves how timeless this mans music is! I love it 😍
So, I saw your reaction to "If I Can Dream" Seph and it was exactly the reaction I had, first time hearing.
I didn't cry. What I felt was hope. And since I lived thru the strife & violence of the sixties, I also felt some anger & sadness that
such a song needed to be sung.
As a little girl, I recall a feeling of fear & terror on one notable day; a day me & my family made a rare trip out of the suburbs of Baltimore (Maryland) into the City.
The US was seeing riots and fires in many cities across the land over the senseless killing of a great man: a man of peace, of God, of Love; Martin Luther King Jr.
MLK had been struck down in Memphis Tennessee April 4 and rioting was erupting in cities across the US.
In parts of the city our black brothers & sisters were experiencing events on a far different level. They were angry. They were grief-stricken. They were crushed this esteemed man who advocated for equality & justice had been taken.
Two days after MLK's assassination, television News showed cars on fire and City blocks on fire; thousands of people out in the streets going crazy and a huge local police presence assisted by thousands of Federal troops sent in by then president Lyndon B Johnson to quell the violence.
As a young girl, I didn't have a full grasp of the happenings of the day but I DID know tensions were high, violence was erupting and I was scared. It was surreal, sitting in the back seat listening to Motown and seeing the black smoke rising in distant parts of the City.
Mom bought our Easter delicacies and we returned home with no one worse for the wear.
That ride, the music, the sights & the sounds of the day all rush back any time I think of it.
What became known as 'the Baltimore Riot of 1968' was one of the three biggest disturbances arising out of that period of immense civil unrest of the times. King died April 4. Reactions remained peaceful until late afternoon April 6, when at the end of a Memorial Service someone threw rocks into retail windows. That set off eight days of violence in Baltimore alone. A hundred other US cities also experienced similar but smaller riots.
~~~~~~~~
from Wikipedia - "The Baltimore riot of 1968 was a period of civil unrest that lasted from April 6 to April 14, 1968, in Baltimore. The uprising included crowds filling the streets, burning and looting local businesses, and confronting the police and national guard. Over 11, 500 members of local & Federal law enforcement officers & soldiers converged on the City to maintain order.
In the next few days, 6 people died, 700 were injured, and 5,800 were arrested. 1,000 small businesses were damaged or robbed. Property damages, assessed financially, were more severe in DC ($15 million), Baltimore ($12 million), and Chicago ($10 million) than in any other cities.
"Rioters set more than 1,200 fires during the disturbance. Damage was estimated at over $12 million (equivalent to $77.5 million today).
Of the arrests, 3,488 were for curfew violations, 955 for burglary, 665 for looting, 391 for assault, and 5 for arson."
Only two months later, another leader among men, ardent champion of Civil Rights Robert F Kennedy would die of an assassin's bullet on June 6, 1968.
This magnificent song, written expressly for Elvis to sing on his television broadcast, was to embody all the man was feeling in his heart and all an unsettled Nation were feeling as well; in effort to comfort, console and encourage Hope for the day when "all our brothers walk hand in hand".
🕊✌☮
Im loving my chronological journey. Im shocked no one else on RUclips has done this yet!?
First of all, Happy Birthday Seph 🎂🤗
When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Elvis` beloved city Memphis (of all places), Elvis was so shocked and devastated that he cried in a fetal position.
"If I Can Dream" is a live recording and obviously refers to MLK Jr.`s wonderful speech "I Have A Dream".
But it also refers to everything that was going on in the 60s:
1. John F. Kennedy - assassinated on November 22, 1963
2. Malcolm X - assassinated on February 21, 1965
3. Martin L. King Jr - assassinated on April 4, 1968
4. Robert.F. Kennedy - assassinated on June 6, 1968
5. In addition, there was The Cold War and The Vietnam War going on. Thousands of Am.
soldiers were dying in Vietnam and were brought back in caskets.
6. There were countless protests against the Vietnam War.
7. There was the constant threat of a nuclear war, and of course, there was
The Cuban Crisis.
8. The Civil Rights Movement with MLK Jr., Malcolm X, and The Black Panthers.
America was in turmoil and people lived in fear. Black people have lived in fear before, but
now even the white society didn`t feel safe anymore.
Elvis` song addresses all that. And although Colonel Parker was against this song, because he always wanted "His Golden Boy" to stay out of political content, the song became a great success.
That`s when Elvis decided that from then on he would never record anything again that had no real meaning to him.
I WISH i knew this before listening to this song!! It would have been a very different reaction for sure 😢
Thank you for this! 💖
I wish i knew this before listening to this song! My reaction would have been very different! 😢
Elvis Presley's
"IF I CAN DREAM"
From his 68 Comeback Special, was Elvis' Heartfelt and Powerful Tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr, after his Assasination in Memphis Tennessee where Elvis Lived. It is Based on the message of MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech, and was written for him with this in mind. It also honored the Memory of Robert F Kennedy, who was also Assasinated during the same time period. This was a Turbulent Time in America, 🇺🇸 with the Civil Rights Movement, Protests and Riots against Vietnam War and it seemed as if the Country was being torn apart and Elvis wanted to bring a Message of Hope and Unity to the Nation. "If I Can Dream" is at it's heart, a Civil Rights Song.
I do love this performance but as a rule I’ve always preferred his early music from the 50’s and early 60’s. I was fortunate enough to see him in 72 and the show was phenomenal
The song was written by Walter Earl Brown for Elvis. He only sang the song live twice.
Happy Birthday Seph 🎉🥳🎂
You're reacting just like me 😄 You might be as much fan of Elvis as I am
Great reaction to which has to be his best performance he put so much emotion and passion into it each time it always gives me chills and goosebumps he only sang this song in that show talk about coming back with a bang it was written especially for him a tribute for M L King and R F Kennedy plus for all those lives lost in the Vietnam war late happy birthday 😊
Fantastic song :D and i wish i knew all of this before i watched this masterpiece :(
I never thought of this as joyous, but is hopeful. Did you know the meaning of this song, Seph? I sobbed the first 100 times watching this. The assassinations of MLK and Bobby Kennedy tears at my heart, as does this song. This is the most powerful and perfect performance, and he puts every ounce of his soul into it. Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970, not with Philharmonic Orchestra) is also perfection, but the meaning of this song and how deep it came from Elvis’s heart and soul is unmatched by any performance of all time by anyone. ❤ Very Happy Birthday, Seph!🎉
I WISH i knew this before listening to this song! My reaction would have been very different! 😢
Totally appropriate reaction! Elvis dug deep for this one and his voice, face, body language and message hits us as deeply as he felt it.
Such an amazing song 😍 ive now listened to this about 100 times since this video 😂
Seph, have a Great Birthday! 🎉
I agree with your sentiments, this song is hopeful & uplifting. Elvis interprets the lyrics with so much passion & power, that I feel motivated & positive that change can happen.
Couldn't agree more!, 😊
Elvis had this song written as a tribute to RFK and MLK, who had both been assassinated in 1968.
Thank you for mentioning Kennedy, he is very overlooked; but it was Steve Binder who asked Walter Earl Brown to compose this song. Thx.
I really wish I knew this before listening to this song!! The reaction would have been very different 😢
The wonder of u❤❤❤❤❤❤.Vonnie ❤❤
Happy Birthday.
Thank you ❤️🎉🍻
@@SephPlays I was praying you would live to see another birthday. I was afraid you were having a seizure on this one!
Never have i shook like that because of a song 😂
Happy Birthday, Seph! What a treat for you and us.
Such a treat! 😍
Happy birthday, Seph! Thank you for your "warm smiling face, your channel is a sunshine place!" (With apologies to Elvis.) Many blessings!
It was make or break time for Elvis. But he soared. I agree, such a hopeful song, even now, 50 plus years later. ❤
Hard to believe someone so talented was actually "Worried" people would reject him!? Like dammmnnnn 😯
@@SephPlays
isn't that something??!! 😟
It only demonstrates the delicate nature of the inner mind, doesn't it? For all Elvis's magnificence of face, form, heart, mind and his amazing talent - he still suffered from self doubt or fear. In truth, I can see this as reasonable thinking. He spent 1958-60 in the Army & then spent the following 7 making movies.
Elvis was scared to death he'd be rejected.
Even after the hysteria of 1956 to 1968 he still questioned himself. He knew aa lot would be riding on that 1968 TV Special.
Question re: Spoilers. I am not quite sure how to approach his history w/ you?
Should I/we just keep everything at where you are chronologically? Or can we speak of things that happened after? I mean you know he died. How much do you want us to hold back?
I would definitely perfer to keep it all chronological to be honest.
I found out how he died through a comment 😢 and that he got married to Priscilla, and he had a daughter 😕
It's like watching a new tv series and you are on episode 3 and everyone is trying to tell you what happened in episode 50 😂
@@SephPlays INCREDIBLE! I so see your point and your dilemma.
Man, this is a difficult path to navigate, Seph. I'm pretty sure stuff has been coming at you left & right exposing tidbits regarding E's entire life. Even your searching for relevant date specific footage can potentially expose you to later material.
So, you prefer not knowing about Elvis' life past your current year, 1961. Got it. 👍
It is actually a fascinating way of learning a notable person's life history. 😊
Best reaction. Loved it.❤
Awww thank you Kat :D
1968 and nothing has changed
In what way?
So many great songs from this special. Trying to Get to You is a particular mind blowing one
They cut off the end where he says "Thank you good night"
I know 😢 found out waaaayyyy after
A real great reaction man thank you. Imagine what it would have been like to see him in person.'cause he would deliver. a full performance in every song. But he isn't just like this only, he had so many sides to him.
This is precisely the reason i started my chronological elvis journey! I want to find out all his sides 😊
Happy Birthday, Seth!!!!🎉🎉🎉 Love your reactions to all Elvis. He is the King!!!!
He was sooooooo good in this
First of all Happy birthday Seph hope you have a great day😂. I remember watching this in a movie house , in 1968 There was absolute silence. Until he said, thank you and Good Night. Then all you could hear was at least 5oo people singing if i could dream . I have played this song at least once a week ever since that night and it still has the same reaction as it did then for me . The Elvis star 🌟 Shines The brightest ✨️ to show each and everyone of us The way to The promise land. Peace and happiness to each and every Passenger on the Wanderers train Of mystery and a Legacy left by a true king 🤴 Seph you are a true Knight
